A Good Read!
You're back in the fishing boat with the crew that brought you the successful Fish! and Fish! Tales. Offering another finny fable, Stephen C. Lundin, John Christensen and Harry Paul present a business parable based on creating and sustaining successful change. The book uses the same fictitious approach as the other two Fish!ing trips, but this time the story is set at a hospital's nursing station. The agent-of-change head nurse has departed and the new head nurse feels that the group is losing its vision. Then, she discovers that a local sushi restaurant is a model of excellence, and all goes swimmingly after that. Although the advice offered isn't particularly unique, some may find a certain charm in the story. Given that this is round three, the format may seem a little repetitive to those who have already Fish!ed. If you want to catch the core of the message on your first cast, look for the highlights on the occasional pages in whale-size type. We recommend the basic common sense of these messages, even if the storytelling is a little fishy.

An excellent guide for capacity management in small manufc
This straight forward guide is an excellent reference book for small to mid-sized manufacturers or workshops. While it will not give you all of the answers towards capacity planning, it should provide you with enough reference information to develop your own system tailored towards your specific operation's needs.

Easy informative reading covering a very technical company
I approached the Generations of Corning with the same trepidation I approach most "business" books, only to be pleasantly surprised by the attention to detail, the historical perspective and the technical accuracy the book offers. A great history of the Houghton family and their beginnings in and around the Chemung Valley (Corning, NY) area and their strengths in the glassmaking / R&D community coupled with detailed business / labor / process information makes this an excellent corporate biography. Particularly the detailed explanation of partnerships that led to Owens-Corning, Dow-Corning, Ciba-Corning and Siecor will be of interest to business builders. Additionally the very detailed technical info on the evolution of manufacturing and marketing of dark fiber (my personal interest when purchasing the book) proves to be just enough without being so technical as to alienate the average reader.

I would recommend this book for those reasons, great business evolution info, just enough history to validate it and enough detail in current technical areas to make it timely to the fiberoptic community.

"Get Organized: How to Control Your Life Through Self Management" can be considered your first step in personal progression in the game of Life. However, it can't stand alone as the "only read" necessary in personal growth and enhancement. Career Guy's Survival Manual
This books is also on downsizing. About half of it deals with the psychological aspects of being laid off, the rest with how to strategies to avoid it. An easy read with some valuable ideas. My experience consulting with management companies has shown that the fear of bad stuff happening, like getting laid off, significantly impacts performance. This helps you get your head on straight.

A Good Read!
Author Paul G. Whitmore elucidates the advantages of a criterion-referenced instruction program based on having employees practice new skills and tasks. This differs from traditional or academic training programs in that skills are evaluated through performance rather than tests. As he explains it, you can feel how much he believes in teaching job competence through practice. However, while this approach might work well for certain skills that lend themselves to being taught readily through repetitive practice, it may not work as well for tasks that involve creativity and non-routine thoughtful activity. Thus, he may overstate the advantages of his one-size-fits-all approach. The book provides voluminous detail about creating systems to organize and deliver skill-based training, so we believe it will have specific appeal to its target audience: learning officers, training managers and human resource directors.

A LOT better that I expected!
This is a surprisingly useful book. It is a quick read (about an hour or two); the basic format is a question, answer, and illustrative anecdote. I was pleased with the stories presented in the book and picked up a number of pointers. While the book starts out a bit on the obvious side (Q: When should you call a meeting? A: When a meeting is the best way to achieve your objective.), it moves into some though provoking issues such as dealing with interruptions, staggering attendance for optimum use of peoples' time, how to deal with those who want to go into depth on everything, etc. While some of the material on audio/visual material is amusingly out of date, the principles behind them are sound. The corporate world would be better off if everyone read and applied the principles found in this book.
