Good foundation for understanding how the SW biz works
Cusumano's book is a clear and straighforward read into the basic issues that any software company should consider at their inception and as they mature.

Cusumano lays out the basic relationships between products and service very clearly - and he explores the pitfalls involved with good detail from the companies that he has advised. In this early portion of the book he also offers some very useful metrics to help provide financial sanity checks. There's an interesting "historical" chapter that follows the development of the industry, and then he delves into SW development best practices - which appears to be his particular forte. There's also a good chapter on the start-up phase sprinkled with sage advise.

My copy is full of margin notes and has already been transformed into a powerpoint presentation to share with our team.

All in all I found the book gave me a solid foundation from which to consider the SW biz. It's too easy to lose your sense of direction in this industry. Cusumano's book is like a glowing compass that illuminates the common sense dynamics driving this business. Enlightening, useful, well grounded in examples - and well written.

Practical advice for software executives
Cusumano keeps surprising me with the timeliness of the books that he has published during the years. Back in 1995 I was head of development for a software company and once I got hold of his book "Microsoft Secrets: How the world's most powerful software company creates technology, shapes markets, and manages people" I became a believer in Cusumano's work. The follow-up work from Cusumano and co-writers have become part of my software engineering and software business library. The last work from Cusumano "The Business of Software: ..." is very timely as software market is evolving rapidly towards commodity business where end user organizations expect to buy and pay for software based on different grounds and premises than before.

Cusumano's book reflects on many hot topics that EVERY software executive should be aware of like different software business models with corresponding economic metrics, setting up market segmentation with predictable revenue models, best practices in software development, outsourcing to low-cost countries like India and China etc. Also, Cusumano discusses thoroughly about software entrepreneurship and issues when setting business strategy and what impact venture capitalists could have for a software vendor. I believe that many software organizations do not understand what it really means to be run by venture capital driven Board of Directors. According to the ten case studies outlined in his work, some healthy software companies were pretty much destroyed by VC's and this is certainly not something that one should want to happen. Cusumano lists eight points that one should look at when evaluating software businesses. This was very helpful for me to reflect on and see how my company rates when evaluated against these eight points.

This book should be read by EVERY software executive that wants to be updated of what is going on in the software business. This is one of the very few available books that specifically address the needs of a software businesses and this makes this book even more valuable. Cusumano outlines ten different case studies in his book, some complete failures and some successful and each and every one of these case studies have a lesson that we should learn from. We seem to think that we have seen it all, but the best way to learn is to learn from mistakes and never repeat these mistakes. Unfortunately we tend to forget this rule and I have decided long time ago to learn from others and then apply this knowledge in my own software business. I have introduced several successful products by remembering this rule. I also recommend you to read other books from Cusumano and the experiences that he shares from tens of different businesses.

Bohemia : The Life and Times of an Oregon Timber Venture
Published in Hardcover by Oregon Historical Society (May, 1998)
Author: Michael Thoele

Great information, requires a great deal of time to read.
It's very informative to anyone not acquainted with the lumber industry, or if you like to read historical books. Having lived in Drain, Oregon (20 miles south of Cottage Grove), I was excited to see names of people I have personally met and pictures of familiar places. Mr. Thoele has done a thorough research job on Bohemia from beginning to end. I ordered this book on May 15, and it has taken almost 2 months to read, so I don't recommend this book for light readers.

Breaking Your Time Barriers: Becoming a Strategic Time Manager
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall Trade (September, 1991)
Author: Ross Arkell Webber
Amazon base price: $19.95
Used price: $29.90
Average review score:

Time well spent
What makes Ross Webber's book on time management different from other books on the topic is that it is short on wordy backgrounds and long on hands-on exercises. Depending on your perspective, that makes the book an ideal introduction to time management strategies or a good practical supplement to more in-depth books. I take the first perspective and therefore appreciate the book's succinct overview of key time management principles.

Each of the book's ten exercises is prefaced by a few pages of explanation and is illustrated with real examples from the author's experience teaching at the Wharton School of Business or from successful leaders who have mastered certain aspects of time management. For example, in a chapter on balancing time and relationships, Webber tells a story of Winston Churchill. Apparently, Churchill was known for his willingness to listen to a subordinate's suggestion even if he later rejected the idea. Webber cautions that you should never be so time-effective on the job that you neglect cultivating relationships with employers, employees or colleagues. In the accompanying exercise, he suggests keeping a list of people important to you and consciously making time to build relationships with them.

The book concludes with a Master Time and Activity Form that helps you plan each day by taking into account values, long- and short-term goals, important tasks and important people.

Practical Book On Re-Engineering
I am currently doing an assignment on business process re-engineering. Many of the texts I have read so far have been thick on the theories and the benefits of re-engineering. As such, it comes across as cheap propagnada.

This book was different. In the first chapter, unlike other texts, it did not simply insists that TQM and other continuous process improvements are of the past and are not good enough for today's business environment. It explains how TQM has its place, if you are already a market leader. However, if you are way below, then TQM will not allow you to reach the apex before you are out of business. Re-engineering is the way.

This immediately pave the way for the rest of the book. The authors are balanced in their views and do not simply advertise the merits of re-engineering. They also cautioned throughout the text on the difficulties and pitfalls of re-engineering. I found their arguments more convincing than most authors.

The examples throughout the book were taken from different industries and prove a source for ideas for any re-engineering effort. The authors came across as extremely experienced in their work.

I would have given it five stars except the last chapter on the human aspect of re-engineering was rather dissapointing. I had expected to learn more from the authors about the very difficult human resource issues in re-engineering. Like most texts, the book mentioned difficulties and dished out textbook solutions without real solutions.

Still, it was one of the best re-engineering texts I have read and I believe it will help me greatly in my assignment.

I also believe that it is extremely useful for any managers or CEOs who want to re-engineer their business. Hammer's classic on re-engineering is not enough. You need to read this book for the practical advice and guiding framework if you are to have any chance for success in re-engineering.

Busy Woman's Organizer

If you need to use all of the tricks and forms in the Busy Woman's Organizer your life is sadly oversubscribed and you ought to simplify it pronto. Failing that, clone yourself. Almost everyone will find some of the forms and tips supplied here useful. They range from a well-thought-out job description and contract for a live-in caregiver to exhaustive lists for dealing with grocery shopping, caterers, birthday parties, and disasters. Packed between them are sections of advice on time management and organizing life that have been fodder for a gazillion magazine articles. Still, having the information gathered in one spot is undeniably helpful. Be forewarned that some of the text is clunky and uncomfortably bald: "As you reach middle age and thereafter, you will begin to lose your parents to health problems, dementia, or death...," the elder care section blandly declares. Overall, though, Busy Woman's Organizer is a neatly packaged compendium designed to keep the overwhelming aspects of modern life at bay.

Commonsense Time Management (Worksmart Series)
Published in Paperback by AMACOM (March, 1992)
Authors: Ray Alexander and Roy Alexander
Amazon base price: $10.95
Used price: $0.75

Average review score:

Quite basic, but validates unpopular ideas.
Alexander offers sometimes simplistic suggestions, but just having those suggestions in print makes them valid in the eyes of some corporate managers. One of his suggestions .. to cut down on paperwork, reduce the number of copy machines in your office (page 97). The book contains self-help exercises and motivational quotations from many sources, many of whom have never been thought to be associated with time management

Coping With Cutbacks: The Nonprofit Guide to Success When Times Are Tight

Coping With Cutbacks: The Nonprofit Guide to Success
This book was published several years ago, when shifts in funding began to indicate a new perspective was needed as nonprofits faced funding cutbacks. The authors note that they originally thought these cutbacks would be similar to those experienced in the 1980's, but quickly realized that changes in the 1990's were due to devolution - the delegation of power from the federal government to state, county, and local governments. They perceived this to be a fundamental shift in how Americans want to solve long-standing social problems. Thus, the book became a new way for nonprofits to think about solutions to these changes and new ways to meet mission goals.

The book is divided into chapters that address the steps in identifying current situations, models for alternative approaches to the challenges identified, and strategies for change and growth. Comprehensive worksheets are provided to assist in working through the steps each nonprofit will need to address if they are to survive. The results of their survey of nonprofits are presented in detail, showing the differences and similarities in thought processes throughout the nonprofit community. It is a very practical and easy to follow system for identifying the issues and challenges your nonprofit faces and steps in planning for a positive and proactive future.

The authors found that when they queried nonprofits, very few considered such options as modifying their mission, collaboration or advocacy. Most focused on cutbacks in staff or programs, or identifying new ways of raising money. While not eliminating these strategies, the book focuses on thinking outside the box - moving beyond basic cuts and fund raising. They believed that these typical responses simply won't work - and explain why. They focus on two broad categories of response they feel nonprofits overlook, Structural Strategies and Engagement Strategies. A large section of the book explains these concepts and outlines ways to achieve a more positive future, for your nonprofit and your community. Information is presented on dealing with engaging your community by identifying arenas of influence and using this information in strategic planning; generating alternative strategies; selecting strategies appropriate in your environment and implementation through collaborative efforts. For those wanting to focus on more traditional approaches, there is a section that details how to identify when to make cuts and effective methods for making efficient cuts.

Emil Angelica came to Orlando in May 2002 to discuss the book and new strategies he has developed since publication. It was very interesting and informative to have the opportunity to reread the book and then listen to his updated concepts. Attending the lecture was an opportunity to have words turned into an animated, personal presentation. Mr. Angelica is a fun, fascinating and organized speaker. His manner compels you to take notes, so as not to miss a single concept. The amount of information offered was almost too much to absorb, but so fascinating you couldn't disengage. Exhausted but exhilarated, was the reaction when he was finished.

Mr. Angelica presented much of the material contained in the book, using a fresh, new approach. He stressed thinking outside the box and involving your entire community. Many of his definitions are new and unexpected ways of approaching old issues. A large amount of the second part of the lecture was focused on the details of identifying, forming and working with collaboratives. Actually, the section on collaboration seemed too detailed and over stressed, more information on the topic than many of the attendees wanted.

I had read the book when it first came out, at that time it was a lot to absorb. Rereading now made so much more sense, hindsight is a great learning tool! The exciting element was having the author present his concepts and beliefs in an energetic, refreshing way, reinforcing the philosophy and adding his dynamic personality to the mix. Thanks, Emil!

Developing Products in Half the Time
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (January, 1991)
Authors: Preston G. Smith and Donald G. Reinertsen
Amazon base price: $29.95
Used price: $1.49
Developing Products in Half the Time is a classic on the art and science of competitive product development. This is a real manager's book, one that takes a sophisticated view of project dynamics, corporate structures, and the people who ultimately make projects succeed. Each of its 16 chapters is a self-contained examination of a single aspect or stage of the development process, and the whole adds up to a rational and well-considered approach transferable to real-world situations. Featured topics include the definition of rational product objectives, the creation of economic models for a new product, the management of a project's "fuzzy" early stages, staffing and motivational issues, organization and project management, the relationship between design and manufacturing, and risk management.

This volume is an expanded reprint of the 1991 hardcover edition, with an additional chapter that reviews the original 15 sections in light of the authors' experiences with clients. Although the authors writes primarily for managers in product manufacturing, much of their methodology is applicable to other fields, particularly software engineering.

Average review score:

Some good concepts but falls short in bringing them together
I found that this book had some excellent observations and perspectives on improving the product development process. Ch. 9 on Achieving Overlapping Activities was especially good. However, in Appendix B, the authors show their inexperience in the real world by arguing that World Class Manufacturing and Total Quality Management are impediments to rapid product development. In fact, the concepts practiced within these philosophies will, if properly implemented, work in concert with the other practices discussed in the book and result in faster and better product development. The authors missed this opportunity to fully explore the benefits of a truly integrated product development process. Nonetheless, this book is worth reading and owning.

Econometric Analysis of Count Data

Valuable Guidance to Count Data Analysis
Since publication in 1984 of two pathbreaking articles by HHG and GMT, many new econometric models and methods for count data have been developed and applied variously in cross-section, time series, and panel data situations. But there has been very few econometrics books guiding those models and methods. That's why this book is valuable. It brings together a diverse body of literature that until now were available largely in pieces. The emphasis of the book is on methods for cross-section data. It should have been more desirable to give same weight on explaining the modeling of panel count data which in recent years econometrics literature has more devoted to. This book may be very useful for applied researchers because it presents the main ideas underlying a variety of methods to overcome the problems of the restrictive Poisson specification and proper interpretation of underlying stochastic process.
