A very good book
Connie Bruck, along with Joe Nocera is probably American's best living business writer and this is another great work from her.

A good story about a man who starts off running his father in law's funeral palor and winds up the head of one the world's biggest companies.

Bruck spends a lot of time discussing the charm and the personality of Ross and admits that Ross is someone that she really likes. The book does not have the balance of her previous book, The Predators Ball, but does not Michael Milken as subject matter like that book did too.

I would definitely recommend owning a copy of this book.

Don McNay...

Gives a good understanding of Warner Communication
This book gives a good understanding of the history of Warner from Kinney to the creation of Time Warner. This is an excellent book to give an understanding of how a media empire is built.

Crazy & thrilling biography.
Anyone in media or entertainment has to read this book. It was, by far, the strangest story I read during two years of business school and it will help Time Warner employees understand how the company & culture was created. M&A people should also check this out since the merger of Time & Warner is the most interesting part of the book. Time was supposedly buying Warner Bros yet the Warner top brass ended up in charge.

Modeling Financial Time Series With S-Plus

Useless without FinMetrics module
This book is useless without the S+FinMetrics module.I wish I knew that in advance. Moreover, you can download it for free on www.insightful.com

WITHOUT S+FinMetrics module
This book does NOT come with the S+FinMetrics module. This book contains reviews of advanced time series theory, however, without S+FinMetrics module some part of the book is not insightful. This book is also not of financilal econometrics because there is no financial theory. This is a very good time series book if it comes with S+FinMetrics module.

Combines theory and practice
The best thing about this book is that it combines financial time series analysis with "real-life" examples that are either reproducible or easily adaptable. Being that it is also the user manual for the S+FinMetrics module for the SPLUS stats. package it also reads like a software manual (some people like that). This book provides a good sample of many time series techniques that can be applied out of the box.
Note: The S+FinMetrics module includes this book.

Quick Start
I was able to read this book in one night and still had time to make a game plan for tackling the organization project at the office for the next morning. There were a few ideas that were easy to implement; some so simple I can't believe I never thought of them before. (The Tickler Files!) After two work days, I had changed my work process enough to feel better, and thus have some relief. Not to mention, on day two, my director stopped mid-sentance when she saw the top of my desk and praised me for how clean and organized I was.

This book is a great place to start for some easy, immediate results. However, I need much, much more on PDA's, e-mail, case management, and paperwork flow. The success I had from the small investment of time here will keep me motivated to move on to books tackling the larger picture.

Great book to get you started
I was totally disorganized and swamped with paper everywhere. This book was one of 3 I bought and was the first one I read. It is easy to read and follow, and it brought order and gave me confidence to start my umpteenth effort to get organized. Absolutely recommend it to anyone who is in need of a kick start to getting organized.

Practical and simple to follow methods
This book is well organized. It offers practical and simple to follow methods. If you don't want to spend a lot of time reading, but to take action getting organized, this is the book to read.

Mediocre and bland
The book was a dissapointment. A long list of "bumper sticker" phrases is not my cup of tea. I guess some people like to read common sense advice over and over and over. Not me. Thanks,

The Capitalist Philosophers : The Geniuses of Modern Business -- Their Lives, Times, and Ideas
Published in Paperback by Three Rivers Press (24 September, 2002)
Author: Andrea Gabor
Amazon base price: $14.00
Used price: $6.95
Perhaps nothing has shaped the American century more than the emergence of management as a discipline in the corporate workplace. In The Capitalist Philosophers, Andrea Gabor explores this phenomenon by profiling the personalities and ideas of the most influential management thinkers of the 20th century. Among those that Gabor writes about are Robert S. McNamara, the former Secretary of Defense and pioneering bean counter at Ford Motor; Peter F. Drucker, the "big idea man" and guru to giants such as General Electric; W. Edwards Deming, the late star of the "quality movement"; and Mary Parker Follett, an early advocate of collaborative management.

One of the many threads that hold together Gabor's profiles is the issue of "two seemingly irreconcilable visions of management--the scientific and humanistic." She writes that humanists see the corporation "as a pivotal institution of democracy with complex responsibilities to a host of constituencies, including its employees, its customers, and the community. The other, much more utilitarian, view recognizes one corporate constituent--the shareholder--and a single purpose--profit making." The Capitalist Philosophers is for anyone seeking a sweeping, well-written history of American business. It's also a rich look at the philosophical underpinnings of newer management approaches that are rolling through the workplace today, such as re-engineering and Six Sigma. --Dan Ring

Tracing the development of modern management thought
In this book, business journalist Andrea Gabor traces the contributions of several key management thinkers and practitioners, and how their efforts shaped both the modern American corporation and popular notions of it. By chronicling well known (such as F.W. Taylor and Robert McNamara) and less known (such as Mary Parker Follett and Fritz Roethlisberger) figures, Gabor succeeds in illustrating how their ideas built on one another and in many cases anticipated by decades the challenges managers would -- and continue -- to face.

The result of Gabor's efforts is not solely a survey of prominent people, but rather a nuanced discussion of the development of what proved to be some of the 20th century's most influential thoughts on management, irrespective of the originator's fame. This approach has several benefits. First, it accurately maps the development of fundamental theories of the corporation's role in society without bowing to the cults of personality around certain writers. Next, it demonstrates how ideas may be attributable not just to one genius, but to several individuals who may articulate similar thoughts in response to changes in society and work life.

For readers looking to understand the development of management theory, this book is an excellent place to start. For all readers, Gabor makes this an entertaining book by describing in detail the personal qualities of these figures, and how their backgrounds and work experiences shaped the perspectives they brought to bear on the early problems of management.

The Philosophers of Capitalism
The capitalilst philolospher is a great novel. It goes in depth in to how profound capitalist made their mark, and also their faults. So as a reader you get to see what they did, and what they could have done to better. It gives a great foundation on how capitalism came to be, and how it has developed in the last centuries.

Adding value by integrating business history
The general idea of the book is that scientific and humanistic management theories interacted and developed over the century. The author makes explicit issues that guided and constrained the thinkers' ideas. The author reviews the contributions of Frederick Taylor, Mary Parker Follett, Elton Mayo, Chester Barnard, Abraham Maslow, Herbert Simon, Robert McNamara, Alfred Chandler, W. Edwards Deming, and Peter Drucker. The book examines the philosophers' contributions, and shows how these thinkers affected business thingking and practice.

A Solid Effort!
Jerry B. Harvey, a professor of management science, offers a series of essays on various management topics, such as backstabbing, betrayal, deception and work environments. To make his points, he uses a kind of discursive, reflective approach that includes a mix of stories, fables, metaphors and considerations of language usage. Some might find his approach a refreshing narrative, complete with the feel of discovery you'd get from reading someone's diary. Others may find that the essays ramble and repeat themselves. We at getAbstract.com agree more with the first line of thinking. However, we do post the cautionary note that - although Harvey raises some generally unmentioned, intriguing issues in the politics of management - he does need to be more concise. In other words, perhaps he could have used that knife in his back to trim his prose a little.

do you meditate on how you manage?
In a discipline filled with pseudo-scientific gurus, Dr. Harvey offers a fresh perspective through his insightful 'meditations'. If you're still looking for technique and how-to, you may not find it here. Dr Harvey critical and funny analysis give insights for you. You really got to read his experience after his heart surgery!

Jerry Harvey is right on the money
Jerry Harvey is sharp, quick witted, and perceptive. Anyone who interacts with other people at all should read this book. It is a rare combination of good writing and good lessons.

Introduction to Applied Econometrics: A Time Series Approach
Published in Hardcover by MacMillan Pub Ltd (October, 2000)
Author: Kerry Patterson

Average review score:

An Awkward Treatment of Time Series Econometrics
Patterson's text is perhaps one of the worst econometrics textbooks that I have come across in recent years. The writing is cumbersome and unwiedy, the exposition is awkward, and the overall treatment of the subject is rather tiresome, uninspiring.

The only reason that I did not give this book a "one-star" is that it could serve a useful purpose: it can show budding econometric textbook authors how not to write a textbook.

The panacea for studying a stimulated-simulated approach TSA
Looking for miracles before examination? This is the book that I have depended on for 2 months to understand time series analysis in a logical manner. The book is an impetus for a much more simpler approach in studying econometrics. The matrix method was not left out which is a stride in understanding the greater complexities of mathematics involved in many econometrics textbook. Written in a lively fashioned aligned with some of the famous empirical studies which are pillars of modern economic thinking. The approach is based on the authors' thinking to act as a support function for many students who are indeed interested to learn the values of empirical analysis in economics. Without this book I would have never apotheosised the study of econometrics in this way. I congratulate the author for his successful scholarly work!!! Your book paved way to my success!

The Long waiting gift for beginners in time series
There are many good books on time series analysis, i.e. Enders (1995), Hamilton (1994), and Maddala and Kim (1998). Unfortunately, the books is intended for advance learner. While Enders (1995) is accessible for begginners, it seems getting old and become a nostalgia.

Fortunately, Patterson (2001) has provided a readability book for student and practitioner that all this time has been forgotten by most writers in this subject. Without going into much frighteners (and more likely will confuse the beginners) advance mathematical, matrix, and econometric theory; the book give theoretical insight into what is supposed to be known in the subject. While this book is only a complete refresher (and could be boring) for advance learner, I cannot find a better introduction book.

As detailed reference textbook, it covers basic subject on time series (i.e. ADF test, Engle-Granger procedure, cointegration, VAR, and VECM) up to several higher-level issues such as multiple unit roots, structural and seasonal problems in unit roots/cointegration, ARCH, and GARCH. This book is intended to provide students, researchers, and forecasters with a definitive, self-contained survey of time series analysis.

With intensive application, the book will attract applied academician and practitioner in business sector. 5 chapters exclusively dedicate for application, this equal to 30% of the book contain (around 230 page from 750 page contain). The subject cover in application section are popular subject: money demand, term and structure interest rate, Phillips curve, and exchnage rate. More examples also available in every chapter. From this point of view, the book delivery what its promise in the title: "Applied Econometric; A Time Series Approach".

With such a simplifying way in explaining the subject, the book will be a richly enjoy reading for undergraduate and first year graduate students of all sciences, not only in economics. This much-needed book synthesizes major developments in Time Series into a single, coherent presentation of the current state of the art of this increasingly important field.

Good Quick Read to Get A Dose of His Ideas
This is a nice book that I have read from time to time. It is a somewhat academic guide to the handling or the managing the problems of a company or organization during times of stress. It is not a "Dummies Guide to ...", but it is more philosphical with broader guidelines. I like his one point about keeping three months of cash available or liquid assets to maintain liquidity during the crisis. When I was a student in Boston I had a famous economics Professor and he kept repeating "add 10% for uncertainty" - the three months is something that sticks in one's mind years later and is always a good guide.

Good book in the Drucker style, and one of his shorter books.

Jack in Toronto.

Still the best
I think Drucker, even after all these years, still stands head and shoulders above the other management gurus, writers, and flash-in-the-pans that we've seen in recent decades. His thoughts and insights are still the most profound in the business and this recent book is no exception.

Gran Libro
es un gran libro, como nos tiene acostumbrados el señor Drucker y les hará muy bien leerlo a los ejecutivos y managers cuyas empresas estan en problemas

Behind Expectation
For the past 4 years working in an Investment Bank I've read many business plans.
Don't expect too much from this reading. I'll recommend it just to beginners.

A good book for a novice starter
A simple and illustrative business plan manual, providing vital layout, advise to enhance high points, which every plan requires.

Highly Recommended
A very consise and well written guide. An excellent reference to have at your side while writing a business plan. I find it extremely useful. My only complaint is on the poor graphics in the book, especially since the author repeatedly stresses the importance of graphics in a business plan.

"Where's the Beef?!!"
Nothing here that is implementable. This tape contains one message: CHANGE EVERYTHING. The entire book and tape revolve around this single message. Mr. Peters provides no implementable plan or suggestions on how to adapt this message to you, your department, or company. In fact, you have to ask yourself, "Is it truly necessary to change everything?" Most of us would have to say "No." In fact, this is more often than not a recipe for f-a-i-l-u-r-e. Instead, A RETURN TO BASICS is what is needed in 90-95.0% of the cases. However, my biggest complaint isn't that I believe Mr. Peters is wrong, it is that his recent books and tapes are filled with superfluous and outragious statements that fail to advance the listener's or reader's understanding of the concept. When I buy a management book or tape, I want information and concepts that I can quickly take to my company and implement to our mutual benefit. Unfortunately, Mr. Peters' recent works appear to be nothing more than pep-talks and cheerleading sessions. You have to ask yourself: "Where's the beef?"

Tom Tom Club
With a Copyright of 1994, its a little dated, but the basic message remains clear. Innovate or become extinct. Tom's enthusiam is apparent with each chapter.

If you can overlook the examples of corporations that are no longer around, and listen to the concepts, ( refer of course to the audio version) its a great program.

For true members of Tom's movement, this book remains a variation on a theme. A must have for the "Work Matters crowd" a cheap substitute for his live programs. Or a great refresher course for someone that has been to one.

The entrepeneural spirit of Tom Peters is here
Beyond review, I read this book first in 94 and just re-read it again in july 97, It is still wonderfull and give a lot of insight to business. I wish I can see him LIVE in THE SEMINAR someday, most of Tom books are good and worth reading. Read it.
