Outstanding book for jewelers wishing to make more money!
I am a full time employed bench jeweler with a one man retail operation. I have been manufacturing and repairing jewelry for many years and have often looked for other ways to suppliment my store's bottom line. This book is outstanding for either the beginning watch repairman or the employed jeweler. In the first week you should be able to pay for this book! The rest is gravey on your bottom line!

Highly Recommended!
Visit any healthy manufacturing operation and you'll see a buzz of bewildering activity - parts being moved on overhead cranes, raw materials being wheeled in, line operators checking their production schedules before they change the line over to their next product. Those production schedules, as this book suggests, can really be a hindrance. Operators become dependent on them, although the schedules may not accurately reflect customer demand. The solution? Kanban, which is based on having a communication system right on the factory floor that communicates key indications of customer behavior - buying, ordering, canceling - directly to the workers themselves. Production activity, therefore, is actually scheduled based on customer demand rather than on past expectations, with the advantage that you hold less inventory and operate more effectively. This book (which comes with a compact disc of implementation directions) gives clear insight into this powerful scheduling system employed efficiently by Toyota and other world-class companies. We highly recommend it to executives, managers and supervisors of companies that earn their living by making widgets more successfully.

An enjoyable and very practical approach to leadership
A very practical, 3-part resource for managers and leaders across a wide range of experiences. In Part 1, the authors identify 37 leadership and organizational skills and attributes. They define buzzwords and jargon that are often misunderstood and misused, and provide easy to understand examples of these concepts. This is especially useful to new or less experienced individuals. Part 2 provides easy-to-use assessment tools allowing managers to assess themselves in the 37 areas. It also provides tools designed to get feedback from peers, as well as from associates above and below them. Part 3 gives step-by-step approaches to improving performance in each of the 37 leadership areas.

The book can be used as the overall template of leadership development or simply as a tool to help tune-up one or more specific skills. The book would be ideal as a component of a corporate development program or an addition to any manager's library.

Give a hike up Change Moutnain a try!
Just read 'The Compass and The Clock' and was motivated by it to do something I've wanted to do but was afraid to try.

The book is an interesting concept. It melds a parable about time and direction with an approach to personal leadership that helps you go after something you've always wanted to achieve.

Very powerful message and a quick and easy read. Recommended!

Lean Assembly: The Nuts and Bolts of Making Assembly Operations Flow
Published in Hardcover by Productivity Press (October, 2002)
Author: Michel Baudin
Amazon base price: $50.00
Average review score:

Lean Assembly
This excellent book should be read by all who are involved in lean systems. It is written with the practitioner in mind and is full of the type of information that you would expect from an experienced consultant such as M. Baudin. This well developed book shows practical tools and techniques that are not found in other lean books. For example, chapter 2 shows how to use Product-Quantity analysis for production layout. This important tool is virtually ignored in the current popular lean literature. Another one of the strengths of this book is that the author discusses how the different lean tools should be applied in different manufacturing settings. For example, he recognizes the differences between automotive assembly and electronic assembly and shows what will and will not work in these different settings. So, no matter what your product is or your production volume, you will find this book to be invaluable. If you only read one book on lean manufacturing, this should be it. So many of the current books on lean manufacturing are written at such a high level that they are virtually useless to those who must actually design and operate a lean manufacturing system. Baudin's book will help you implement lean, not just talk about it.

Excellent book for beginner
This is a very good introductory book. All components of lean manufacturing system have been explained. More importantly, the language is very simple and easy to understand. The sample templates are great. One aspect, I would like to see is the cost concept. Particularly, how an established factory can be transformed to lean system with respect to cell concept and layout change. The author has written about the cost benefit of lean system, however, no supporting evidence has been provided. But overall, this book is great.

Galbraith - don't miss him!
When I borrowed this book at the library, I had never read Galbraith before, and intended to read just a few chapters. Now I am still reading his books.

Galbraith is funny. You learn a lot from him, he makes you see under the surface of things. He is never boring. His writing style is exceptionally elegant. And he obviously is a very good man.

Great, cheap guide for students on getting organized
I've had this book for so long that I can't even remember anymore where I originally bought it. Ron Fry's books are easy-to-read and no-nonsense, which is great because this is a subject you don't want to have to waste a lot of time reading about!

He gives great ideas for getting organized for the semester, which is something I always had a problem with, and he also gives advice for students of all ages.

I also recommend his "How to Study" book, and for getting organized in general, Deniece Schofield's (sp?) "Confessions of An Organized Homemaker". No more putting off homework because your study area/house/life is too cluttered and distracting!
