Thorough, clean explanations
Financial Accounting is a difficult subject and Hermanson and Edwards do a very good job at bringing it down to the "understandable" level. They offer a multitude of ways to learn subject matter: from text, to graphs, to problems, to internet research (with web sites to visit) to real-world examples.

Guide to Purchasing Electricity and Gas

Hold My Hand!
The stuff that is happening to electricity prices in both ends of the country - California and New York - is really scarey. Gas prices are also going bonkers. All this deregulation is changing the way we have bought energy for the last 60 years. I am not sure we are going in the right direction.

But this book is a calm, direct, understandable guide that will help me and probably many others to make some sense of these chaotic times and develop a plan to make the best of all the uncertainty.

The book makes sense with out being preachy or self-important. It is a complex topic, but I could follow it well.

It is definitely worthwhile for anyone concerned with buying energy for their organization, large or small.

I think this book would be great for any student
I recently took a hospitality managerial accounting class at school and found this book extremely useful. There was so much in-depth information, along with illustrative examples, case studies, and useful problems and exercises. The student workbook also came in handy and helped me to pass the class.

The Idea of Capitalism Before the Industrial Revolution

The Best Introduction I've Seen
Grassby's little book is an excellent introduction to the concept of capitalism. It admonishes us at the beginning to discard our preconceived notions: the idea is neither theoretical nor is it empirical. It is merely socialism's Demiurge. (Indeed, the term comes into the English language in translation from a French socialist, according to the OED.) Just as there are many inconsistent versions of socialism, its straw man, pretending to be a description of the status quo, varies at least as much. The author then goes on to describe briefly (that is, the rest of the book, which is only seventy-three pages) how the concept is used in the study of history and how any given effect that has been blamed on or (less often) credited to free markets pre-dates the industrial revolution, and can only rarely can be attributed to mutually beneficial exchange. The analysis in, and above all the skepticism of, this account make this a very fine place to begin any inquiry into the nature of the thing called capitalism.

The problems with the book are that it is too short, it lacks footnotes, and its bibliographical essay includes only relatively new sources, requiring the reader to take notes or shuffle through the book to find the authors and titles actually discussed in text.

Allenby's unique and honest view on industry&ecology
Mr. Allenby is in a unique position concerning Industrial Ecology, he is one of the leading figures of the multinational AT&T. The lawyer, who got his Ph.D. in environmental engineering later in life, takes a critical look at the industry today with 'green glasses' on. He successfully describes the relations between Natural-, Technological-, and Cultural systems, and sustainability in terms of physics, engineering, but most important, in terms of law, economics and social aspects. All of these relations are described in order to create a policy concerning sustainability. He also highlights 'the technological fix', which engineers and company management has: 'You have a problem, no matter how big, we'll fix it, because we can!!' When asking the biggest part of managers in big companies:' Can industry and sustainability coexist?', they all shout:' YES, OF COURSE!!' Allenby actually dares to defy this, and leaves the awnser of this question in the middle, which is more a realistic view on the matter. For an executive of AT&T, this is a darefull attitude. This book looks at the industrial world as it is, with an honest view. However there is one point, which could have been done better in this book. The awnser to the main question is not given. The beginning of the book looks promising, however in the last part; these promises are not met. This book is written in high-standard English, which, for native- and foreign English readers, makes it difficult, but wonderful to read. Therefore this book can be seen as a handbook concerning Industrial Ecology. Definitely five stars!

Great Book
I thought this book did an excellent job of describing the aspects of Information Technology. It was clearly written and easy to read. I also thought the CD did a great job also, though it was a little tricky to navigate around, at first. My only regret is I cannot get my boss to read it. He's a Technophobe.

Topical ethnography at its best
I stumbled across this book while researching the Makah Whaling controversy. It has one page on the Makah and whaling, offering comparative perspectives on a story set further north. While the Makah are trying to revive a tradition of whaling that ceased more than sixty years ago, Inuit peoples across the Arctic are struggling to maintain their way of life. The hurdles they must overcome to continue on their way include a declining resource base that results from an extraction-based economy, and the environmentalist opponents of these extractive industries who want to "save the whales". This book is the story of the Inuit and whaling told in their words. The authors include an international interdisciplinary team brought together by the Inuit Circumpolar Conference.

This book is ground-breaking ethnography that is put together by the people it is about. It is presented for the purpose of opening dialogue with those in far away places whose political priorities have consequences for Inuit peoples. It is a story of a region that spans three continents, and which is of growing importance to those of us who live in the south. No one interested in economic development of natural resources, whatever the point of view, can afford to ignore this book.

A great way to increase typing speed!
I teach typing at a middle school and we recently started using this program. My students and I found it to be a great change from the standard drills we were using. They loved the way the programs made them practice the keys that gave them the most trouble and the fact that, in the individualized practices, the program would push them to try typing a little faster in the repetitions. I liked it so much, I bought a copy for my machine at home. My whole family is working with it to increase their typing skills. I highly recommend this program.
