Presents a concise historical context for various current economic systems as they stood at the time of writing. As such presents a 'current' perspective which is effectively a historical snapshot of how things were perseved when the book was written in the 1970's. Avoids the hindsight view of the inevitability of the collapse of communism which flavours econmic historical reviews today.

Langlois' focus is on consideration of economics as a process and a continuously evolving system that is often (if not usually) out of equilibrium due to continually changing technological innovation and other influences. This is in contrast with the (unrealistic) Neoclassical focus on equilibrium dynamics.

Langlois wrote the first and last chapters, and his chapter on rationality and institutions was an excellent overview/critique of rationality in economics. Other chapters were contributed by individual authors such as Williamson, Littlechild, Loasby, etc. Overall the book and chapters were of a high standard, although it didn't seem to be terribly clear just exactly what Loasby was saying - it wasn't incoherent, it just didn't seem to be making much of a point or adding anything new. That's just my reading though.

In short if you want to get into new institutional economics, this is an excellent and important book (along with Jack Vromens book which is an excellent review). If you want to consider economics as a process with no particular commitment to new institutional economics, some of the Austrian economics writing is excellent reading as well and the Evolutionary Economics (eg Nelson and Winter) is also good.

McAleese has finally found a way to teach economics to business students without sending us to sleep. This book uses excellent and useful theories backed up by current examples which allows the student to get more involved in economics today. The wording is composed using terms from the 1990s - many of today's economists feel the need to explain economics in the language of the mid-1900s, when many economic theories were established. This book is a gem. I recommend this to students around the world who are past beginner's economics but who are not yet ready for advanced economics.

This book was written long before the internet; long before it was cool to be a geek; back when engineers and scientists really did wear pocket protectors. And, even though technologies have changed, the personality types outlined in this book still exist.

Engineers and Scientists are hard to manage. This book gives over a dozen examples of work styles and management techniques that are more relevant than ever in today's labs, engineering departments, programming teams, and IT centers.

It is a shame that this excellent book on managerial psychology and technique is no longer in print.

There are a lot of books and journals out there that talk about the EU, but few that provide an overall look at the EU. This book does that. Heavy on the theory and practical workings of the EU while light on the structural jargon, it provides an excellent, in depth look at the EU. Recommended for students just beginning in their studies of the EU or others who would like a compact reference, this book is an excellent find.

Mr. Shattuck's book, "Estate Planning for Small Business Owners" is the best practical resource I found on the topic of preserving and protecting assets owned by entrepreneur and/or small business person. He offers cost-effective methods for dealing with practical problems that are unique to small business owners. As an attorney, I have gained valuable practical insights from this book. Surprisingly comprehensive for a paperback book.

I got the skinny on this project from Grunig himself--he was my advisor in graduate school. This is the opening introduction publication of a large research project he and his colleagues were conducting for the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Taking their inspiration from Peters and Waterman's "In Search of Excellence", this book provides a comprehensive look at public relations, giving readers an idea of where the field is and where it is heading. I'd consider this a must-have resource for anyone wanting to move up the ranks as a public relations professional.

This book was worth every dollar. It is well written and extremely interesting. It tells the stories of women who have successfully made it in their fields of business. It explains their real life stories of how they got there and funny or frustrating things that happened along the way. The book also gives insight into how to handle difficult situations as a woman in power. It is a fast read. Informative and easy to understand. It is a very valueable book to read.

This book is just great. It was the first book I had read about accounting and it helped me a lot. If anyone wants to learn about accounting, that person should pick this book. It's easy to read and very informative.
