Magnificently comprehensive Baltimore history
This is one of the finest and most complete Baltimore history books you well ever encounter in your life. However, it does inadvertently omit one significant fact in the creation of Baltimore. My great-grandfather was a German immigrant named Boston Fear. He was the original creator of Walbrook: Baltimore's very first suburb. Walbrook was originally named Fearville in honor of Boston Fear.
I highly recommend that individuals with an interest in the constructive formation of Baltimore purchase a copy of this exquisitely detailed book for your own personal collection.

Awesome
The best and most comprehensive history of Baltimore ever written. Olson is to be commended for her years of research and dedication, and the result is incredible.

19th century england and internet bubble
I think this is the book I read in 1969 about the Depression of 1888 in England---somtimes referred to as "after the rairoads were built". Rostow's analysis allowed me to see parallels in 1990's and avoid the crash and prosper in its aftermath. Great economic history. ape

A scholarly look at the British economy of the 19th Century.
This book is a collection of essays, each examining various aspects of the British economy in the Nineteenth Century. It contains quite a large number of charts, and is heavily footnoted. These essays are written in a scholarly (almost turgid) style, which means that the casual reader will have some trouble following them. Fortunately, this book does examine the Great Depression of 1873-96 in depth, and from several different angles.

Below is part of the table of contents. I include this to give the potential purchaser an idea of all that is covered in this book.

Go beyond the soundbites
This is a significant book that does more than bring together a number of apposite and informative papers to provide a comprehensive picture of China at the turn of the century. The volume as a whole engages with and interrogates the environments of information, political representation and policy choice behind the headlines or soundbites, popular perceptions of the "other" and the role that scholars play in their production and interpretation. In this respect it is a self-reflexive volume of professional interest within and beyond the China field.

--China Quarterly

Scholars and interested lay people who have never lived in China should read this book. So should politicians, journalists and government officials working on China.

--The China Journal

China Without Stereotypes
Editors Weston and Jensen have set a high goal for themselves, eschew the highly polarized and stereotypical American debate about China and look into what is happening in the last major economy to experience modernization. In their introductory essay they make the point that contact between the US and China has never had the breadth and depth it has now. The exchange of people and ideas is significant. They remind the reader that the Chinese and American societies share a sense of exceptionalism than can be the basis of cooperation and confusion. Wasserstrom underlines the anti-intellectualism of treating China in either/or 'paralying polarities'. Each author in turn discusses some facet of Chinese society, economy, or culture and how it is faring under the stress of modernization. Each essay presents the reader with the realization that China and its new leaders face daunting problems. Whatever China's goals energy needs, environmental degradation, and new identities may be more than speed bumps on the road to modernization. Real problems realistically reviewed is the fulfilled promise of this volume.

May someday come true....Great Read.
Goldsteine elequently describes the differences between the liberal dilemas we all face today. After all, as Goldsteine argues, we are all liberals. What makes us liberal and what is the connection to our past...This book is doomed to become a classic and may even come true to life.

Excerpts from Reviews
"What Goldstene does is beautifully integrate the abstract world of political and social philosophy with the reality of the modern world....An incredibly provocative and thoughtful argument that conceivably could become the center of much concern." -- Issac Kramnick, Cornell University

"Goldstene again demonstrates that he is a leading contemporary radical critic of liberalism." -- Rick Tilman, The Social Science Journal

"This book deserves the widest possible audience, for it might become a minor classic." -- D.M.P. McCarthy, American Studies

"Lately I have read a book that has made me see in a new light the way I have been forming opinions during my life." -- Thomas Griffith, The Atlantic

"One of the most important critiques of liberal thought in recent times." -- Alan Tonelson, The New Republic

"Among...recent radical critics of American liberalism, Goldstene appears to stand alone." -- William B. Hixson, Jr., Commonweal

Economic Development: The History of an Idea

A Must Read for anyone interested in this topic.
An excellent book. A classic in the field of developmental economics.

excellent overview using "history of ideas" approach
If you are looking for a description of the genesis of the idea of economic development--more accurately, "development"--I think you will find in Arndt the scope, concision, depth, expertise, and sophistication necessary for an educated introduction to this topic.

In the introductory chapter, Arndt offers a concise summary of the intellectual rivulets contributing to the modern understanding of development: "Higher living standards. A rising per capita income. Increase in productive capacity. Mastery over nature. Freedom through control of man's environment. Economic growth. But not mere growth, growth with equity. Elimination of poverty. Basic needs satisfaction. Catching up with the developed countries in technology, wealth, power, status. Economic independence, self-reliance. Scope for self-fulfillment for all. Liberation, the means to human ascent. Development, in the vast literature on the subject, appears to have come to encompass almost all facets of the good society, everyman's road to utopia" (p. 1).

With expert facility, he traces the inception of the idea of economic development as a conscious abstraction guiding the emergent European nation-states of the seventeenth century, its dramatic growth in international importance post-World War II, and its most recent variations in leftist revisionism and rightist reactions. Using the "history of ideas" approach, he locates the origin, expansion, rejection, and modification of the idea of development in the explicit statements of key individuals in various historical contexts who more or less take up where have other important figures have left off. Deriving from the study of the humanities, the "history of ideas" approach is a richly instructive means of constructing cultural history.

In the last chapter, Arndt acknowledges that the interpretation of development has been so diverse that "one sometimes wonders whether it stands for anything more substantial than everyone's own utopia" (p. 165). Although he concedes that "the word seems to have all but lost any specific meaning," he argues that this judgment misinterprets because "development still means something, as evidenced by the fact that some are against it." Certainly, the nuances of this widely embracing idea are considerably fleshed out by the end of the book, to the well-deserved credit of the author.

Some personal notes. I found it especially interesting that the papal social encyclicals drop into the same category as Mahatma Gandhi and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini as rightist reactions to Western models of development. I might add that despite repugnance of the West toward Khomeini, his ideas and their Islamic context are worthy of serious inspection. Last point: I thought that given the success of authoritarian export-oriented models of development, achieved in countries like Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea, the contribution of East Asia to the dialogue on development, such as Lee Kuan Yew's espousal of "Asian Values" or Deng Xiaoping's vision of "Pragmatic Socialism"--is it really market capitalism managed by an authoritarian government professing socialism?--would have secured substantive coverage in the book.

Arndt's survey will bring you up-to-date on the idea of development, but in order to gain a genuinely deep understanding, it is probably necessary to read other books, for which Arndt's publication provides ample references.

Comprehensive and wonderful
Norman Pounds has put together the comprehensive book for understanding medieval Europe through the study of economic systems. The book is designed for the medieval specialist, but a non-specialist would easily understand the material. The first three chapters, which are a chronological introduction to the topic, are absolutely spectacular and could easily stand on their own. The next five chapters deal with the topic thematically. There are chapters on population, agriculture, manufacturing, trade, and towns. Each chapter treats the subject chronologically, and are packed with insight. The final two chapters discuss the economic changes taking place in the Late Medieval period.

Pounds has really mastered the material, including the most comprehensive bibliography ever assembled. Much space is devoted to discussing the evidence and the historiographical debate surrounding each sub-topic. Perhaps the only downfall to Pounds' wonderful work is that it is really limited to the periods from which there is substantial evidence. Outside of Chapter Two, the Early Medieval period is hardly discussed. This is, however, made up for with spectacular analysis in the later periods.

Finally, the graphics alone make this book worth the hunt. There are amazing maps, charts, graphs, and illustrations all over this book, all of which are quite usefull.

A new perspective on history
This book discusses the period between the end of Roman empire and the Renaissance both as a chronological process and as a series of foci on topics as commerce, manufacturing and population. My reason for warmly recommending this book is that it gives an insight into important developments in the middle ages, for example the role of the monasteries as a kind of early multinationals was an eye opener for me. An other reason is that it explains patterns you can see in present day Europe. The way towns were founded in the 12th and 13th century explains a lot of the spacing of the cities you see today. The development of the plough gives insight in why what parts of the countryside were populated.etc. The list is endless. For me it meant the opening up of a whole new field of interest; economic history. Recommended, also for Americans visiting Europe, who really want to understand what they see in Italy, France and Flanders to mention a few countries. Walking through Troyes is a different experience if you have read this book. For the English centred there is a drawback, for an English book England is relatively sparcely mentioned. The book is well written and has a pleasant style.

Economic Principles: Growth and Environment

Author: A. Robert Koch

An excellent introductory text for understanding economics.
A. Robert Koch has presented an intelligible and thorough text to grasp basic economic principles. It is well designed for students who just have a cursory interest in understanding how economic principles can be applied to their daily lives.(p)

I found the text enjoyable and a good reinforcement of microeconomic theory, which I had learned years ago. Koch does an excellent job in maintaining the reader's interest by providing numerous real world examples to a subject which can become boring to those not having any genuine interest in learning economics principles. I highly recommend this text to lay people and other novices in the area of economics.

The best book for a beginner
In this book (the twelfth edition) every economic subject is very well explained without difficult mathemayical concepts. People who like the mathematical approach can find something in the appendix. There are a lot of examples about real facts happened to real companies (Microsoft,...) or organization (OPEC...). The logic approach and the examples are very usefull for a beginner that first of all has to understand the main concepts rather than struggling in a difficult language or math.

A very beautiful book.
The authors have explained all principles with remarkable ease taking numerous to the point examples.

experience pays off
Kenneth Boulding used to have his office in the bungalow I work in now, so I became curious and had heard of his reputation as an economist. This book is basically a collection of lectures for high school teachers from the olden days. He interprets economics as it relates to different sciences and social sciences. Though some of his thinking is dated by now, it is nevertheless refreshing and inspiring to hear his perspective on different aspects of my favorite field of study. Because he is from the old school and because he helped branch the field out in different directions in his own research, he really understands where the ideas we study in economics came from, how they changed as their context changed. If you have a background in economics you find this book a good read and not demanding or quantitative. If you know a little economics you will find this book very informative. You may find yourself knowing more economics than many professional economists do! To me this sort of thing is important to general health of the social sciences and economics in particular.

A great book for anyone interested in economics.
If you are studying economics, or even if you know nothing about economics, this book has quite a bit to offer. It is great for a student doing research on economics, and even good for someone interested in sociology. A must read for anyone into either subject!
