Considerable changes that took place after World War II have created a lot of consequences. The demand for economic reconstruction and the emerging of new countries (mainly in Asia and Africa) that released from colonialization are two of the changes that soon happened after the War. Not long after them, the following change appeared, namely, the emergence of non-state actors such as multinational corporations and international organizations (especially that operated in economic and trade area).

Consequently, all of them made the world political landscape differ from it had used to be in pre-World War II. The world political landscape which had used to be dominated by security and military issues changed to be dominated by more various issues, especially economic. This picture was much realized by scholars of international relations. Therefore, they tried to redevelop a study of international political economy, a study that considers economic and politics as spheres that closely related.

One of the scholars is Robert A. Isaak. He himself defines the study as a study of the inequality or asymmetry between nations and peoples and the collective learning and positioning patterns that preserve or change the asymmetry. Differ from other readers of international political economy, he has a specific analysis.

In observing the phenomenon, he neither uses Marxist's point of view nor liberal's. He prefers a 'new view' to taking a side on one of them. His 'new view' is based upon what he called collective learning and positioning. In the essence, this view constitutes a process to differentiate patterns of appropriate adaptive behavior in facing changes without the abandonment of cultural identity.

According to Isaak, the change forced an actor to keep his group from suffering a financial loss. from here, strategic behavior turn up. They are defeatist, free rider, maintenance, and entrepreneurial. These strategic behavior, in Isaak's opinion, have dominated 'struggle for power' in contemporary political/economy arena.

Supported by strong information that happened behind the event and the use of wide range references, Isaak's explanation becomes very convincing. As a textbook in international political economy, this book is very recommended.

This IS the definitive work on the arcane world of closed-end fund (CEF) investing. CEFs provide an excellent method to target particular investment sectors -- especially international markets and fixed income. I like using CEFs for part of the fixed income component of an investment portfolio. When properly managed, they will enhance your dividend yield and supply capital appreciation potential. CEFs can provide greater yields by deriving dividends from portfolio assets at net asset value (NAV), but pay them based on the share's market price -- which can be at a discount to NAV. Simply put, you can buy dividends on $10 worth of assets for only $9. The investor (or their advisor) must, however, monitor the CEF's discount to premium spread versus NAV on a regular basis. CEFs can be tricky. I recommend all new CEF investors start out with this book -- it's a little dated -- but the principles remain true. Note Steven Samuels' advice: Never buy a CEF on the IPO -- and I would add, never buy one at a premium.

I don't know why this book it's not widely advertised. I consider it as one of the best books written on this topic. It follows the investment process in an clear way, which makes very easy to understand.

This is a reprint of Cohen's 1949 book. (Sansom wrote the foreward.) While amended in some respects by later work, there is a great deal here that is valuable and unique. Cohen provided much of the economic information for the U.S. Strategic Survey reports on Japan; this is much more detailed and comprehensive in most respects.

this book gave me an idea of state board exams. i'm glad that i had a chance to read this book.

Lowitt's book is a survey of New Deal legislation and how it pertains to the seventeen states comprising the American West. The book is arranged topically, rather than chronologically, which keeps specific subjects contained for easier study. By concentrating on the effects of legislation, Lowitt easily demonstrates how the New Deal changed the West, both immediately and long term (dammed rivers or farm subsidies, anyone?). He supplies the reader with enough information about the problems that plagued the region, so his explanations of how New Deal programs tackled those problems are quite clear. Lowitt's style is flowing, and this makes for an easy and engaging read. Although there are a few shortcomings, this book is a good survey, and is a valuable departure point for those interested in delving into the New Deal and its impact on the American West.

reading the book of pavlik, one can hardly find something uncovered. however, this almost exhaustive approach and the restrictions imposed by the economy of a book limit the depthness of the coverage. i encourage you to read this book if you know what it is about or you want to know what to know! flavius chircu (fchircu@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu)
