I am an MBA/Graduate Marketing Research adjunct professor at Lindenwood University in St. Louis, MO and I am currently using this text for my class. The students find it very accessible, even for non-researchers, and easy to read. I find that it flows very well and makes good use of real-world examples. The only criticism is that there could be even more real-world cases and examples and some interactive projects that could better allow students to have a more hands-on learning experience. This text is very good overall, but I am needing to supplement the class with some outside real-world projects.

When the average person thinks of the automobile industry, thefollowing names like Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Honda, Toyota,Saab, etc. are likely to leap to mind. But what MIT's report points out is that the modern automobile industry is not represented just by these finished-product assemblers, but by suppliers and component craftsmen that constitute an extremely complex web that make up "the automobile industry." But the complexity of the automobile industry rests not only on the composition of the industry itself, but also the international environment within which the industry must operate. Domestic auto industries hold a special position in most countries in that most governments see the very existence of domestic auto producers as a good unto itself. For example, if a Japanese producer can engineer and produce a better widget, chances are that that producer will be able to market that product domestically and internationally with great success if widgets are not seen as a major threat to an important industry of another nation. But with automobiles (as was the case for Japanese producers in the early 1970's), the prospects for successful international competition is not so clear-cut. Automobile producers are therefore constrained not only by the forces of the market and competitors, but also by domestic and foreign governments that take a special interest in the success or failure of their firms.

I came into contact with this book in a graduate level class "Globalization of World Cities." I have read numerous books and text on the subject matter, and this book is far the best I have ever come into contact with.

This book is very concise, covers many of the aspects of globalization, and is written for the public (lacks the standard jargon in other books). This book is a very fair analysis of the phenomenon that is globalization, and does not linger on the economical aspect. I must say though, that it does not cover the environmental effects of globalization, and those who are most interested in that phenomenon will be let down by the text.

Mahoney's book can be considered an excellent reference work for individuals in the field of manufacturing literature. It contains information on almost every manufacturing concept or idea presented in the last 50 years.

The author, R. Michael Mahoney's, years of experience and training as an engineer are evident throughout the work. The book is written in a straightforward style. Material is presented matter-of-factly. Many explanations are provided in the form of over a hundred charts, graphs, tables, Venn diagrams, and mathematical equations.

"High-Mix, Low-Volume Manufacturing" is not a casual read. It is meant to be analyzed and studied in order to gain the insights described within the text. Mahoney details concepts and ideas in order to help the reader understand the techniques and tools needed to successfully operate in a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing operation. The best approach to the work is to read it in stages. This allows the reader to fully grasp and understand the topics discussed prior to reading to another section. The work is well positioned as a reference book

Morris-Suzuki has written a work which is comprehensive, particularly in terms of Meiji era Japanese economic thought, when it was still emerging from its feudal roots and becoming mixed with the more academic Western thinking of that time. Not enough attention is given to the influences of the protectionist thinkers, like Henry Charles Carey and - particularly - Friedrich List, but the fact remains that her research shows she knows the literature and her conclusions are sound. Frankly, we need more books like this one if we are to ever come to terms with the Japanese economic challenge

The research in this book is solid, and it was an excellent resource for my purposes. My edition dates from the mid seventies, but the tables and charts as well as sociological observations are still relevant today.

By computer book standards this text, first published in 1992, is ancient. Indeed, some of the information and methods are outdated to the point of being quaint; however, parts of this book are not only relevant today, but the information imparted is hard to find elsewhere. Reasons why parts of this book are still valid and important today include:

- Part Two, Control of Processing, contains highly useful techniques. In the chapter on quality control the discussion of how quality control relates to data collection, preparation and processing - and the controls - are invaluable. The techniques for validation are as useful to operational support staff as they are to QA staff, and are rarely discussed in current literature. The entire chapter devoted to performance evaluation and auditing is another part of this book that is applicable to modern, web-enabled systems. Applying the approach and techniques to contemporary systems would significantly improve reliability, availability and support objectives.

- Part 3, Management of Processing, is filled with useful techniques for scheduling batch processes (highly important in modern environments that employ data warehouses and data marts), system maintenance, and budgeting. In addition, the chapter on managing resistance to change contains insightful information and advice in that thorny area.

There are gems scattered in other sections of this book that will provide you with ideas that have stood the test of time. I found useful information in the chapters on computer personnel and oversight of computing. While some of the material does not work in a modern environment, these chapters are interlaced with material that does. If you're involved in reorganizing IT you'll find good ideas. Another chapter that is out of date, but has some useful information, is Chapter 8, Privacy and Security. The methods are outdated, but the concepts are still valid and clearly presented.

Overall, this book contains a lot of information that is either erroneous by today's standards (the use of Halon, for example), but a wealth of techniques that are quickly becoming a lost art. It's worth purchasing and mining for the gems.

This book is a solid work of well researched theory by one of the leading marketing thinkers in Ireland. Given the export led focus of the Irish economy and the success of the economy in the last ten years there is probably no-one better positioned than Bradley to identify the factors salient to the success or failure of international marketing stragegies in the real world. Ideally this book should be used in conjunction with case study material to illustrate the issues. Taken on it's own it may appear to be a little weighty and it could be perceived as a daunting read. However, it remains for me a valuable reference work

I graduated my college in feb.1988 majored in int'l trade. Now I engage in start-up company of computer. Nowadays I need several information in global society. But I has peace in this chaos world by virtue of this substract book by prof. Chacholiades. I am sorry that it is out of print. For the book in my shelf is worn out.
