Awful, terrible gmat book. Dont buy it!
Words fail to describe how bad this book is.
The practice tests and questions have no resemblence at all to the actual gmat questions.
The book is so bad that I was personaly insulted and have decided not to purchase any more "barrons" books.

There is better prep material out there
This book the typical job of explaning the test, and what is going to be tested, and will review you over the basic types of quesitons that the test has. Then the book gives you a pretest to let you know where you stand, and then it begins to give you some review sections.

The review sections are pretty good, but they are not helpful if you are someone that needs to brush up on a subject. In fact, they do tell you they are no substitute to real knowledge. So you might want to keep that in mind.

The next sections of the book are a series of practice tests that are good exercises to go through, but some people claim some of the answers are wrong, and I did find a few typos in the book. So it is a little frustrating to work through.

The computer software disk, is worthless. Other books such as the Princeston review's disk has LOTS of questions. This book computerized the first exam in the book only. Not exactly helpful, not adaptive, so don't look for a lot of help.

Now this book might be good if you just want to sit down and do problems similar to the ones on the exam. If you are looking for a reach coach, or anything that is adaptive, this book isn't much help. Personally, I wouldn't purchase the book, but if someone had a copy laying around, I'd pick it up.

Excellent supplementary book
I got many of the GMAT preparation books, but the Barron's is an excellent addtition to other preparation books (an addition because I believe you need several preparation books for the GMAT). Especially the "Essay Writing Review" and the "Critical Reasoning Review" deserve five stars. Not only are the two topics well explained by giving examples how to practice, but also how to approach the test questions.

GMAT scores are an important part of any graduate business-school application, so you need to perform well. Suzee Vlk, long time test-prep specialist and author of several Dummies books, can help. The GMAT for Dummies is packed with useful information and strategies to help you prepare for the test. The book includes advice on how to use the book efficiently (Vlk estimates you'll need 28 hours to work through it), review chapters for all three sections of the exam, and two complete practice exams. Two chapters focusing on the analytical writing assessment portion of the exam will help you write effective essays--and remind you that schools differ regarding the importance of this section. Vlk also offers special advice for "computer illiterates" worried about taking this computer-based exam. In familiar Dummies style, Vlk includes a handy tear-out "Quick Reference Card" with a summary of the most important information and a "Part of Tens" section with "10 Dumb Things You Can Do to Mess Up Your GMAT" and 10 relaxation techniques to use before and during the exam. With its witty writing and helpful icons in the margins pointing out important information, The GMAT for Dummies makes test preparation easy and relatively painless. --C.B. Delaney

BUYER BEWARE!
For all the years that the author claims to be a pro at test prep, her questions and answers in the full-length tests are wrong. That's right, wrong.

May I suggest the E.T.S. GMAT book? It has real GMAT questions.

Too light in content to be useful
Quite frankly this is a difficult test. Typically the ... For Dummies books do a great job in giving information on a subject. This book treats the subject matter too light. The publisher did not catch the many errors in mathematical formulas, and if this is your only reasource, your not going to do well. The first two chapters that explain basic information about the test, do an excellent job. The book looses ground quickly at that point and in the end does a poor job in preparing you for the exam if this is your only source of studing for the exam.

Great book, for what it is
This is a great book if you only take it for what it is meant to be: a starting point. I purchased this book to begin studying for my GMAT with no intentions of it being the only book I would use. The book does an excellent job of explaining the GMAT in general and does a great job teaching to the writing portion of the test. The math review and verbal review are good places to start, but unless you are very strong already in these areas, you will likely need another book to complement this one. I think this is an excellent book and is certainly a much better read than any of the other GMAT prep books I have used.

not that interesting book!
The practice questions are easlier than the actual questions on the exam. Some techniques were taught. That is about it.

I would recommand books like "Princeton Review" and the "Official Guide for GMAT". The first book teaches one all the techniques that one needs to know to do well and the second book gives one plenty of practice questions.

One ugly book. One very effective CLEP study guide.
When I first received this book I was dismayed and almost returned it immediately. The type was done in Courier. The binding consisted of punched holes loosely bound with the stitches that showed between a plain, stiff black hardcover. Just the basics. This is one ugly book. (I suspect it was hand published just for me because I had to wait many weeks to get it and paid a premium price. Lucky me.) A quick glance through reveled page after page of sample questions with some filler text in the back, most of it in outline form. The filler text did not seem to support the test questions. Then I hit on the secret. I took each 25 question section. All the questions I got wrong or wasn't sure about I wrote down in a notebook along with the correct answer. Then I read each of these statements into a tape recorder and studied them as if they were Trivial Pursuit questions, listening to the tape whenever I was driving. Meanwhile, I checked out a "real" business management textbook from the local library and looked up any special items that the sample questions pointed to but didn't give me enough information. Results: 7 hours study time and I got a nice high score on the test. Many, many of the sample test questions revealed themselves in some form in the real test. Will I by another Jack Rudman special? No. It's just too ugly. Did it help me pass the test in the most efficient manner? A definite yes.

Not for you if you are targetting 700+
This is a very...book and the questions are so easy and simple. It might be ok if you are in the 500-650 range, but if you want more, go for Kaplan and Princeton Review.

A Confusing Book!
I just began it with the first two chapters and found that I could hardly get it through. There seem some errors in the book and the tests differ from the real ETS tests so much! If you have a lot of money, try to get other books instead of this one. Don't waste your time on it.

Not the perfect book
The tests in this books are pathetic - I was not able to understand a lot of critical reasoning questioning, let alone answer them (fyi, my GRE anlytical score is 760/800). The introduction to the verbal section was somewhat useful, but the practice tests will really dampen your spirits.

What a waste of money!
The tests in this book are generic and completely useless. For example, one test is called the "The procrastination scale," in which you mark true or false to things like "I tend to put things off." Then at the end you add up the number of points (according to answers they have determined you "should" have answered) and then it tells you how you compare to others. So, if I scored a 70, it means "70 percent of people procrastinate less than me." Gee that was helpful in choosing a career.

STINKS!
This book taught me absolutely nothing I didn't already know! I'm well aware that I hate my job, thanks. And I'm also aware that I want to change careers. All this book told me was that I hate my job... and want to change careers. I'm appalled by the thing. I guess if you're not the least bit self-aware this might be some sort of help (though if you're not self-aware why you would be looking for self-help is beyond me).

The tests are easy to take but often awkward or confusing to score. And the time spent in the scoring isn't in the least well spent because the results won't tell you anything that will help you determine what you might actually want to do with your life. All I got at the end of each one was frustration.

There are no real assessments of career interests in this book. All the tests are vague pop psychology assessments of things like how neurotic you are (I swear! One of the tests is called "The Neurotic Scale"! If that isn't biased, I don't know what is). You will not walk away with any sense of what sorts of careers would be a good fit for you, or what interests or tendencies you have would fit with what sorts of available careers.

I can't stress enough - don't waste your money or time on this book. I'd give negative stars if I could.

What the heck?
What an alluring title, introduction and table of contents. I truly thought I had found something that would speak to me...I only wish I had read other Amazon reviews of this book before I wasted [money] on it. I could go on and on but let me simply say that there is nothing about this book that I can see that would be helpful to anyone wondering about a career decision. This book is a waste of time and money. I hope Mr. Janda's next commission check is stolen.

It's amazing how easy it is to get a PhD in Economics...
well, this must be the case considering how terrible this guide is. Even though the authors claim to have PhDs, they have no clue about even introductory micro or macroeconomics. Their questions must be in some sort of secret code because I can't understand them! Their answer explanations are often wrong and the book is covered with mistakes and errors. If you get utterly frustrated doing their tests, don't worry - the actual test is nothing like it. Just throw this book into the garbage where it belongs and use ETS's preparatory test guide and the textbooks you used in college to review.

outdated and badly edited
i found many mistakes in this book, including errors in formulas in the preparation chapters and miscalculations in the actual answers, not to mention numerous typos. the historical questions were written in the late 80's and haven't been updated since. and the tests overall are much easier than the real thing, so be careful. unfortunately, there isn't a great variety of econ gre books in the market, but if you can find another one, i'd try that before buying this outdated, badly edited book. NOT A GOOD PREPARATION FOR THE GRE ECONOMICS TEST
There are errors in this book, and the focus is off. The writers don't seem to have a good understanding of the GRE economics test, or the desire to find out. I think this book is sold simply by virtue of its title and the absence of any other test guide on the market. The best preparation is to use a good summary of the relevant economics concepts (which I had to prepare myself since I couldn't find any other GRE economics guidebook) and to practise on the actual test that ETS has put out. This approach served me well. Feel free to e-mail me at radagrawal@hotmail.com if you have any further questions.

CFP Certified Financial Planner Examination
Do not order this book if you are interested in studying for the CFP exam, it will only be waste of your time and money. The book has roughly 200 hundred pages of questions which don't even resemble CFP questions for which no reasoning is given for the answers, only the correct letter. The so-called preparation section looks like it was taken directly from several different books, the fonts and page styles change from section to section, and one section addresses investing as if the reader is a first time invester in mutual funds and another section reads likes you are a small business owner. The books learning section does not even mention, let alone address estate planning, it seems as if the writer does not even know what is on the exam. ...

Narrow and Pedantic
The author harnesses empirical data but fails to put forth any meaningful hypothesis concerning the declining value of money in third world countries. I find the scholarship a bit narrow-minded. For example, the idea that the devaluation of the peso is the systematic outcome of the free currency market is poorly hatched and hardly researched. The author fails to address the geo-political landscape as potential causes for this loss of value and refuses to discuss the issue of NAFTA in a coherent way. My thinking is that the author is a pampered, ivory tower intellectual who has lost touch with his ability to reason.
