Reassuring and helpful
If you are a college student majoring in television production, you know that internships are the only key to getting a career in the field. This book will be a vital asset to anyone fighting to secure an internship in the field of broadcasting.

While many of the suggestions on actions one should take and how one should behave were things I found to be common sense, it was reassuring to read them being suggested in this book, not only by the authors but by the countless TV professionals that they quoted throughout the book.

There were also several suggestions made that I wouldn't have thought of. I'm so glad that I read this book before I began my search for an internship. Now that I am in the middle of working as an intern for a local PBS station, I continue to find the book's suggestions helpful. I consult it every once in a while for new ideas.

Useful and easy to read!!!
This book is a useful source for everyone in need of advice regarding interning in the media industry. From day one of looking for your dream internship Breaking Into Television holds your hand. This book guides you from the interview to your first day, and then into making your internship into a potential career. After reading this book you feel motivated and informed to become a "super intern".

This book got me the job!
If you want to get an internship in the television industry, this is the book for you! You can tailor the suggestions to fit your situation, but the author tells you what you need to know and the order in which to do it. One of my future co-workers was even quoted in the book! Run, do not walk to get this book and study it carefully -- I'll see your name in the credits when you do!

Inspired Work
DOING BUSINESS BY THE GOOD BOOK is an inspiring collection of business truisms based on Biblical teachings. The author of the book, David Steward, is a very successful businessman and the founder and CEO of a billion dollar company called World Wide Technologies. Establishing his company in the highly competitive "tech" field was not easy, especially when there were countless naysayers who doubted that a small minority business could garner success in this area. However, Steward credits his commitment to God's principals as the driving force behind his corporate success. Already known as a dominant business leader, David and his wife were asked to teach a Sunday School class for business people. It is this Sunday School class, called Doing Business by the Book, which provided the material for this powerful book.

The lessons in the book are set up in an easily understood manner. Each of the 52 lessons has its own theme and includes a scriptural passage relating to the particular theme. The actual "meat" of the lesson includes the author's interpretation of the scripture and his own experiences with the theme. Steward provides readers with a wealth of information and willingly uses his own experiences as examples.

While this book is targeted towards a business audience, the lessons will motivate anyone who reads it. The book covers a broad array of subject areas, including planning, communication, networking, and flexibility. However, the most powerful message in the book is that our morals and values should be upheld in all aspects of our lives, including the professional arena. David Steward provides relevant, hard-hitting food for thought and his personal experiences are just as powerful as the Biblical lessons he teaches. DOING BUSINESS BY THE GOOD BOOK will provoke readers to examine themselves and consider the word of God before making decisions in their lives. I cannot recommend this book enough.

A real classic
There is a handful of terrific books by terrific writers ... few are better than what Robert L. Shook and Dave Steward have put together.

Doing Business By the Good Book: 52 Lessons On Success Strai
David Steward's book should be required reading by all pastors and in all churches as well as in today's business world. It's wonderful! Easy to read, yet weighty in substance. Using biblical principles, David successfully shows a spiritually, mature integration of these principles and his faith with success and business workplace ethics. Churches could also benefit from this refreshing viewpoint of "doing business by the good book" and note that this "good book" is just as good for religous business. I see this book being used to teach biblical ethics and for bible study and Sunday School (one lesson X 52 weeks).

Ideal student text for professional continuing education
I have adoped the field book for use in the Corporate Trainer Certification program being offered here at San Antonio College Continuing Education. The text is up to date. It combines a very well written text with review exercises, case studies, and personal actions through out. The students love it! But, what I like best about the book is my instructors' USE IT! They use the music CD as well. Their coments to me are that "it's user friendly." Thank you very much for this great teaching tool.

AWESOME book. A must for everyone, not just college student
This great book has taught me the value of being yourself and how TO land that perfect job. Matching your "I will" to your competitors "IQ" is a task that is sure to lean future employers into your direction. This book not only gives you step-by-step instructions to follow when getting ready for an interview, but also how to write a resume, and possible interview questions that you will be asked but more importantly, those that you should ask! Also, this book shows you competitive ways to overpower the competition in job interviews, to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack including those with more experience, qualifications, etc. You too can land that perfect job with a little help from James and his book. I used James techniques to help me to be elected to an elite board of directors that normally takes 2-3 generations to be involved with, but I did it in less than 6 years. I have also used these techniques to help me be awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarships, just by following a few simple tasks. This book is awesome, not to mention Jame's motivational speaking events. James is a talented individual and he is putting his talent to work in today's society. He will stop short of nothing to achieve his goal and he will help you to accomplish YOUR goals. This book is a must for anyone looking to land their dream job, not just college students. An enthusiastic TWO-THUMBS UP!!

Spectacular Book!
James Malinchak has put together a great source of information for anyone on the search for a career. The inspirational quotes were especially helpful to me every day. Malinchak's use of his own personal experiences makes every page very accessible to readers. I love this book!

Great book
This book should be read by all college students preparing to enter the real world. It will give you strategies that will help you land the job of your dreams. The book is easy to read and the author does a great job of relating to students.

Get Clients Now: A 28-Day Marketing Program for Professionals and Consultants, by business coach C.J. Hayden, lays out a very precise marketing and sales system actually designed to be completely customized for optimal effectiveness by anyone in the service industry. Employing a "cookbook model" to help readers create this individualized action plan, it first shows how to determine which ingredients are missing from current marketing and sales activities and then suggests the specific tools and tactics that will immediately get a successful effort underway. The truly unique part of this book, however, begins in chapter 6, which breaks down Hayden's explicit four-week system into 28 separate sections that are meant to be read and acted upon one day at a time. The volume's final part, called "The Strategies," then outlines a collection of practical "marketing recipes" that correspond to various plans of attack determined earlier in the process. Each offers realistic tips (on topics such as direct contact and follow-up, networking and referral building, and writing and publicity) that directly correspond to the personal goals, strengths, and weaknesses readers already have identified. Further advice and inspirational anecdotes from recognized experts, along with additional resources, are also interspersed throughout the text. --Howard Rothman

More than Just a Formula
I like models and charts but I shy away from set formulas or programs.  So, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Get Clients Now! offers something for everyone. It seems a little bit like the new Weight Watchers Program with the concept of arranging your points in a manner that best suits your current goals. In fact, C. J. Haden uses the concept of a daily meal plan as part of the 280 day marketing plan.

First, Hayden identifies the six key strategies for marketing and then lists about 20 specific actions under each of the six strategies. These actions represent the various activities you select to develop your own marketing plan. The plan itself has three sections: Appetizers - one or two activities to help create success. Main Course - seven or eight activities to focus on getting business. Dessert - one activity to take care of yourself.

Is this a simplistic formula? Perhaps. But you get to pick what you want to do and accomplish in a straight forward way. It is easy to track by using the worksheets. What I really like is that when you complete the cycle, you can go back, set new targets or areas to work on and begin the 28 day program again.

Am I going to do it? Well, I borrowed this book and then ordered it on-line. By the time you are reading this, I am filling in the worksheets and beginning my own program.

This is a system that works
C.J. Hayden has taken the mystery out of marketing. She has written a book that is easy to read, easy to understand and most importantly easy to follow. The gold in this book is the worksheets. They take the theory to practice and create a step by step process that leads to profits. In the first 28 days, I added $5000.00 to my bottom line! The focus and clarity this program creates is amazing. Anyone trying to grow a business without this book is doing it the hard way.

Finally a do this and then that and then this book
Ahem, Ahem, Ahem....let me clear my throat and then simply say: This is a fantastic book that takes common marketing knowledge to new heights. The simple step-by-step marketing strategies are designed to help any and every small business succeed. No more feeling overwhelmed with your marketing campaign, no more wondering if your initial steps are the right ones, and no more guesswork. Hayden takes you through each step and helps you develop a plan that is right for you and your business! Excellent!

Inspiring book - we as artists can make it!
Cay Lang's writing style is wonderfully witty - such a joy reading this book. I loved the quotes interspersed throughout the book, food for thought. It is very informative book, following her instruction can make anyone succeed in creating art and showing it. Her words are always so encouraging, even when I felt the least creative, this book got my art making moving. And then came the creativity. It is mostly practice and hard work, we all can do it!

Inspiration!
After being in a creative slump for about a year this is the book that inspired me to pick up my brushes again! I had these horrible thoughts of how difficult it would be to even attempt to make it as an artist but "Taking the Leap" eased my mind. It takes you step by step through everything you need to know and what you need to have ready to start your career. I learned how to properly photograph my art (I can't afford a photographer!) and how to set up my portfolio. There are also inspiring quotes from artists or pertaining to art to help get you through. I credit this book for getting me back out there!

Cay Lang, thank you for this program ... and the book!
This is a fantastic book that outlines what you need to do to set up and follow through as a visual artist. Every chapter is like a checklist. You can always use it as reference material later, but the book is great whether you read it for the 1st time or 51st time. Bravo, Cay Lang!

Teaching English Overseas - A Job Guide For Americans And Canadians
Published in Paperback by English International (10 February, 2000)
Author: Jeff Mohamed

Perfect
This is the best book to buy if you are an American or a Candian looking to teach English overseas. It covers everything from what to take with you to how the job markets currently look in differing parts of the world. Jeff Mohamed covers everything, there is even a section on how to avoid culture shock when you arrive in a foreign country.

This book is also packed with numerous contacts for everything you could possibly need, from organizations to send resumes to, places to get certified, and on and on.

This book will answer any questions you might have about teaching, for example he covers the pros and cons of the various certification programs, including the Cambridge/RSA TEFL certificate. And if you aren't happy with the book there is even an address in the beginning which you can send for a refund from the publisher.

If you are thinking about teaching English overseas (even if only for a year) this is the first book you should read.

Highly recommended

This is a great book
I've been teaching English as a Second Language in the US for three years and recently decided to go overseas. I bought Mr. Mohamed's book and have found it to be exactly what I needed: clear, informative and detailed. It has already helped me to obtain job offers in the areas where I most want to work, Thailand and China. I'm sure that the book's detailed advice on training, job searching and adapting to life abroad would be as useful to someone just entering TESL as it has been to me.

An excellent resource for the TESL/TEFL Professional
This book has a lot of excellent information about issues related to finding English teaching jobs overseas, as well as information about necessary training (and where to find it!). It references some other helpful books on teaching, informational websites, and more. I found this book to be a very nice guide for those new to the TEFL profession, as well as TESL/TEFL professionals who might wish to try teaching in a new country. The author obviously put quite a bit of time and research into this volume, and it shows.

Instructional Design Made Easy
Published in Paperback by Performance Management Pub/Aubrey Daniels & Assoc (01 September, 1999)
Authors: Guy S. Bruce and Ed.D. Guy S. Bruce
Amazon base price: $69.95
Average review score:

Beginners & Advanced
Instructional Design Made Easy is a good and useful book. It describes a systematic process for designing instruction and illustrates the steps in the process. In addition, it provides examples of correctly and incorrectly completed steps and checklists for evaluating each step. I recommend it highly for anyone given a training assignment or anyone new to instructional design. It is both readable and sophisticated; experienced instructional designers will find much that is valuable.

Insightful Book
Instructional Design Made Easy provides an insightful look into instructional design. After careful consideration of the material in this book, I considered using the concepts in an educational setting. A better use of this book would be in a business related setting, in which I have had some experience. The Efficient Design Checklists in each section is a great help in keeping users on track toward their objectives. I particularly like Exercise 2 which helps one to identify measureable results. The Performance Objective Template on page 53 of section 1 really helps translate ideas into action. This book is valuable to those who prefer a step by step approach, yet it is flexible enough to be useful to those who have experience in the fild of instructional design.

Getting the Job Done
This book is a good example of a text that actually helps the reader get something done- namely, create and refine an instructional program for any setting or audience. Dr Bruce takes you from a blank page to a well designed, efficient training course in a step-by-step manner. What impressed me most was the skill with which Dr Bruce not only presents the critical ID concepts, but also shows in great detail how they can be applied.

Be Quick - But Don't Hurry : Finding Success in the Teachings of a Lifetime
Published in Unknown Binding by Sound Ideas (27 February, 2001)
Authors: Andrew Hill and John Wooden
Amazon base price: $30.00
Used price: $6.12

John Wooden was named ESPN's Coach of the Century for the way he led his UCLA basketball team to the top of the sporting world in the 1960s and '70s. Andrew Hill was a rebellious and sparingly used reserve on the squad before becoming a successful television executive. While it's doubtful that either would have predicted it at the time, the lessons imparted on the court by Wooden eventually helped Hill reach the top of his profession. And in Be Quick--but Don't Hurry, named for one of the legendary coach's ubiquitous aphorisms, the now-grateful protégé translates that sage advice into 21 "secrets" that may help others realize similar accomplishments. Like the title, the counsel can usually be boiled down into short expressions that are deceptively simple. Examples include "Focus on effort, not winning," "Balance is EVERYTHING," "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail," and "The team with the best players almost always wins." To show their relevance and power, Hill fleshes them out with solid examples from the hardwood as well as the business world. And with the track record Wooden has compiled, who are we not to take them seriously? --Howard Rothman
Average review score:

Nice book with helpful tips
Be Quick But Don't Hurry is a quick read, a pretty good book and a different take on John Wooden's Pyramid of Success that he utilized in coaching the most successful teams in the history of college basketball (UCLA in the 60's and 70's.)

Mr. Hill played for Wooden during his amazing stretch of championships as a backup. The book is basically a reflection of how, after 30 years, Mr. Hill recognized how much he learned from Coach Wooden without knowing he was being taught anything at all.

He discusses how the Secrets of the pyramid are transferable to teaching, business, management and even friendships.

The book is very personal and well written. If you are trying to become a leader or want to learn the keys to success you would gain quite a bit from reading this book. Most importantly, just like basketball, you have to apply these secrets until they become second nature for them to have a profound impact on your life.

For Teachers, Managers, Basketball Fans, Men and Their Wives
Be Quick But Don't Hurry is not only a great and quick read, but Andy Hill's application of the 23 "Secrets" (Wooden's Pyramid of success)that Coach John Wooden utilized in coaching the most successful teams in the history of college basketball are transferable to teaching, business, the non-profit sector, management and even friendships. Hill's touching relationship with Wooden speaks to the lives of any man who thinks of his own father, for better and worse. After 30 years, Hill recognized that his own personal success in business was fundamentally influenced by what the Coach taught him and his team mates. This book can be of good use by teachers, clergy (of which I am one), managers in large and small business, students, athletes, men and their wives who want to better understand their husband's relationships not only with other men, but more importantly with their fathers.

Excellent advice for anyone in a leadership position
The book begins with a brief summary of Hill's introduction to Wooden and Hill realization that the only reason he's made it this far is because Wooden's teachings so ingrained in his mind from his time at UCLA and that they are applicable to all aspects of life. He relates Wooden's 21 "secrets" to his business life, and demonstrates how they guided him to the top. It's amazing how perfectly these teachings fit into regular life. John Wooden is truly an enlightened soul.

In fact, I have implemented a few of his lessons into my life already, and it has made quite a difference. In a band I have gotten together, I have gone for talent, in keeping with rule #1 "The team with the best players always wins". I have gotten the best singer, the best metal guitarist and the most unique drummer. It's incredible that Wooden's teachings even apply to a heavy metal band, something at the opposite end of his spectrum. Whenever I am selected to be in a leadership position I skim this book to better prepare myself to succeed. The way these "secrets" apply to every aspect of life where success is an issue is awe inspiring.

Coaching for Leadership
I found Coaching for Leadership to be an important compilation of writings from some of the world's best executive coaches. Each author offers something valuable to this book that will help coaches, leaders, and executives alike understand what coaching is and what it can become. The book is divided into five parts that address different areas of coaching, such as the reasons coaching is becoming such a huge part of today's organizations, who a coach should be to clients, when coaching is necessary and when it will help the most, what the different styles and practices entail, and how coaching applies in different situations in businesses today. The most valuable part of the book to me was the identification and role section that defines who coaches are, who they should be, how to become a coach, and the goals of coaches. But what1s great about this book is that because it is so diverse and because it is a forum for so many different ideas, it has something for everyone. Someone who reads this book may find more value in a different section or with a different author than I did, but that is the beauty of this book. It will lead to much discussion about the value, processes, and role of coaching in the world today and in the future.I highly recommend this book to anyone within the realm of coaching, to those thinking of getting into the field of coaching, and to those thinking of hiring a coach for themselves or their organizations. There are many different directions in which coaching as a field can go. And, I found that the editors of this book have done an excellent job of putting forth the styles, theories, and practices of the top executive coaches. This is a book that will become more and more valuable in the years to come as coaching becomes another accepted and expected part of the business world.

A "must have" for all coaches.
This book is a "must have" in the library of all coaches. It reflects the best of the best in leadership coaching today. You can pick it up anywhere and find useful, useable strategies to put to work with your clients right away. Coaching for Leadership is not so much a step-by-step "how to coach" book, more of a 'war stories from the trenches." This approach makes the book very readable, practical and indispensable. For either internal or external coaches, there are great coaching examples from change management to career development or coaching for staff development. As an external coach, I found the chapter on Starting Smart especially useful, particularly the author's pointers on contracting. And the chapter on coaching others to accept feedback was as helpful to me personally as it was my clients. This is a book that will quickly become dog -eared, highlighted with protruding colored 'stickies' as you mark your favorite paragraphs. Or at least my has.

Fantastic collection of diverse perspectives
I've looked through a lot of executive coaching titles at only half the cover price of Goldsmith's volume, but within this ONE I get the essence of wisdom from a score of the best names in the business. This is a great investment to find out which authors you need to explore in more depth.
It's helped me identify the authors that are most consistent with the coaching strategies and styles I am developing. A GREAT place for a beginner to study first!
