Microsoft Help Desk for Microsoft Office 2000
Published in Paperback by Microsoft Press (05 February, 2000)
Author: Compiled by Stephen L. Nelson

In Microsoft Help Desk for Microsoft Office 2000, Stephen Nelson has compiled more than 750 Office 2000 articles from the Microsoft Knowledge Base, the database of problems and solutions that Microsoft's own support experts use to assist their customers. True enough, you can query the Knowledge Base free of charge on the Microsoft Web site, but this book earns its cover price by making it easy to browse articles and quickly locate sets of related ones. Because the whole text of this book appears on the companion CD-ROM, it's often faster to find the information you need there. The CD-ROM would be even better if its search interface allowed you to explicitly limit keyword searches to articles on selected Office programs, but it's strong as it is.

Don't look here for information about normal Office operations, however obscure they may be. These articles have to do with abnormal conditions and how to deal with them. A typical entry states the symptoms, including exact error messages and specific behaviors. It then quickly states why the problem occurs and suggests ways to fix or work around it. Articles include references to Knowledge Base articles too, so you can check for more current information online. Some solutions are easy to implement; others involve Registry editing and (particularly in the Access section) code listings. While it's probably too much for a home user, this book is perfect for organizational support departments. It also would fit well into a company library, where Office users could consult it independently when they encounter trouble. --David Wall

Topics covered: All major programs in Microsoft Office 2000 Premium--including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, FrontPage, and Access--as well as the Office 2000 setup routine and some of the suite's minor programs. Problems and solutions appear for many problems, including those related to installation, data sharing, everyday use, and using Office programs in a networked environment.

Average review score:

An outstanding, highly recommended reference.
Microsoft Help Desk: Microsoft Office 2000 is a complete, single volume, highly recommended troubleshooting technical support book for Microsoft Office 2000 users. This essential reference shows how to recover damaged Word documents and text; troubleshoot setup and installation errors; create multiple e-mail accounts on one computer; resolve printer problems; prevent macro viruses from infecting the system; import graphics and movie files into PowerPoint presentations; wrap images around text; ensure Y2K compliant dates; restrict or monitor access to web pages; use lightweight objects to speed database performance, and much, much more. This outstanding, highly recommended reference also includes a complete electronic version of the text on CD-ROM., making it ever easier to find solutions to problems quickly and definitively.

Microsoft Press has done it again!
In 11 years of working with computers the one constant in the industry has always been technical support. When you buy hardware or software and you have trouble, whom do you call? Well for Microsoft has put the answers right at your fingertips and it's Microsoft Help Desk.

For less that $40.00 you have an abundance of knowledge written in over 1250 pages. The book covers each and every application within the Office 200 suite, from Word and Excel to Front Page and Outlook. There's even section on general Office 2000 and the setup and configuration.

Complied by Stephen L. Nelson, this book is a real handy reference when you need the quick answer and cannot wait on the phone. Using the Error Encountered method, you are then given several solutions to try. If you don't like reading books there's a cd with the electronic book included.

While no book can account for every situation, failure or error, Microsoft Help Desk certainly makes a valiant attempt to give you as much information as possible. I liked the way the book is technical enough for the advanced user, yet easy enough to understand for the novice.

Excellent coverage of system implementation
Covers software development, implementation of software packages, and knowledge management. A basic theme of the book is to relate the system to the business processes. There are many useful detailed lessons learned. We have found a number of these to be valuable in my department. The same applies to the checklists. There are two sections of each chapter that are also good. These are what can go wrong and how to speed up the implementation. The book is more in tune with the real situation that you find in IT with limited resources and time. The book also gives recognition to the fact that legacy systems will be around for a long time. Many other books assume that these can be replaced or ignored. We spend over half of our programmer time on legacy systems maintenance so that allocating the rest of their time is a major concern-which this book addresses. Another good idea is that in software package evaluation, you do not focus on software features, but instead on what capabilities the packages are lacking. We used this idea to select different accounting software than if we had used features. The book is easy to read and can be used by non technical people. Several of our business managers have found it informative. In the next version of this book, the authors should expand their guidelines.

Very interesting book
This book focuses on guidelines to implement software with the emphasis on time. It deals with software development, packages, and knowledge management as well as maintenance and enhancement. The book does not preach a specific method, but instead provides common sense guidelines for both users and system professionals. A useful chapter is the last one which discusses how to deal with a number of problems that you are likely to encounter. This was very valuable to my group. Some of these issues are top management commitment, managing multiple vendors, dealing with user expectations, handling changing requirements and creeping scope just to mention a few. The focus of the book is on systems rather than technology in general. There is a good chapter on outsourcing. The life cycle that is presented begins with assessing the current business process, defining the new process, and then deriving requirements and benefits from a comparison of the two. This is an improvement over the standard approach of interviewing and gathering requirements from a system rather than a process perspective. The book should be expanded with more guidelines, but is good as is.

My PCI Bible
I've written code for two projects that required me to do the PCI device drivers myself. I could not have completed them without this book. It looks as if it might be helpful for a hardware engineer as well.

There are other, more "user friendly" books out there, but the other books I tried to use didn't have the wealth of information this one does. It contains the spec, commentary, and useful notes. It doesn't hold your hand and guide you through the development process. If you need that, buy another book, *in addition* to this one.

Bottom line: If you need to develop code to operate a PCI bus device, and you don't have a device driver, get this book. The price of the book is *nothing* compared to the time it will save you.

Good Stuff
This book has meat and breaks it down so that you can get it all. A lot of people do project management and this book is a great introduction to the terms that are used in the test. For me, knowing the terms for what I already do has encouraged me to sit for the exam. I think that there are a lot of you out there who do project management and don't even know it. This book will help you formalize and tweak what you may already know.

Outstanding study and reference guide
I started reading the book as a reference tool and have actually found it very useful for the work I've been doing. I like how easy it is to follow. It condenses Project Management down into a readily available format which, for some of the things I've needed, is quite helpful.

While I haven't tried all of the exercises yet, the scenarios presented are real life and easy to identify as existing in any project or organization.

I also like the fact that ANSWERS get included in the workbook. I hate having to contact the instructor for the answers for questions in the text. I'd rather have them on hand for when I'm ready for them.

While designed to go with the study guide, the workbook can stand alone and really brings the content into focus.

Personally, I think the book works as an excellent "Quick Reference" guide as well as a workbook to study by.

Overall, I like what has been done! That's why I keep it with me. I'm seeing practical application of what I've studied in the pages of the workbook and I love having the information in such a user-friendly format.

The Standard for Software Measurement Programs
I would rate this book ****** if it were possible. If you are looking for material on how to start a "software metrics program", look no further. This is the ultimate reference on software measurement initiatives. The PSM method is compatible with the CMMI (Measurement & Analysis Process Area) and the foundation for the ISO/IEC 15939 standard. All of the authors are recognized authorities in software measurement and process improvement. Dr. Barry Boehm (COCOMO author) has written the foreword. The PSM process is sponsored by the DoD and the U.S. Army. The book itself is comprehensive, well-written, and easy to read. It provides ready-to-use templates such as "Measurement Construct Template", "Project Measurement Plan Outline", and "Data Verification Checklist". Chapter outline:

1 - Measurement: Key Concepts and Practices
2 - Measurement Information Model
3 - Plan Measurement
4 - Perform Measurement
5 - Analysis Techniques
6 - Evaluate Measurement
7 - Establish and Sustain Commitment
8 - Measure for Success
Appendix A - Measurement Construct Examples
Appendix B - Information System Case Study
Appendix C - Synergy Integrated Copier Case Study

Note: Appendix A provides 14 detailed, complete examples of measurement constructs ("metrics"). Appendixes B and C provide 2 comprehensive case studies (approximately 60 pages).

It would require at least a 2-day workshop to address all the information provided by this book (probably at 10 times its price). You can't afford to miss it if you are more than casually interested in software measurement. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Off-the-shelf processes for CMMM level 3 and above orgs
There is a wealth of material available from the PSM site, including the PSM Insight application and PSM Guidebook. However this book is not redundant because it is structured as a clearly written introduction to practical software measurement, that includes excellent guidance for implementing it into your organization. In addition, the 304 pages that comprise this book manages to convey the information contained in the existing PSM documentation, and does so much more succinctly.

I found the most valuable parts of this book to be the clearly described measurement model, and the way the authors distinguish between data that is useful to projects and organizational data collection and analysis. This material places PSM in context and is a sound starting point for an organizational SQA initiative.

The case studies reinforces the mechanics of PSM, and also contain advice and pointers for implementing enterprise-wide measurement. Although I've been following the PSM initiative almost since its inception and have read all of the copious materials available, I still gained much from this book. If you're establishing an SQA function or striving for CMM level 4 or above you'll find this book invaluable. The URLs provided will lead to even more material, including a free Windows-based software tool that fully supports the practical software measurement process.

A Perfect Resource
This book has the most accurate information on all the Quickbooks features, and the explanations are so easy to follow that it's like having a private tutor. No matter what you need to do, this book has instructions, even if you don't want to do things the way Quickbooks normally works. These workarounds, along with all the "insider" information and tips, make this book an incredibly useful, wonderful, guide to getting everything you need out of Quickbooks.

This book has everything you need
This book not only has clear explanations about how to perform every bookkeeping chore in Quickbooks, it also explains what's going on in the background so you can understand how your profit and loss numbers accumulated. Beyond that, this book has important and useful information about workarounds for all the Quickbooks functions that are annoying if you or your accountant don't want to do things the "Quickbooks way". The explanations and tips about setting up sales tax, overcoming bank reconciliation problems, tracking inventory, and managing customers are beautifully written and easy to understand. My accountant said he learned from it and took what he learned to his other Quickbooks customers. This book lets you get the most out of QuickBooks, and shows you how to run your business properly.

Relevant Business Statistics Using Excel with Data Disk: Package

Much better than expected
I bought this book to refresh my memory of the statistics class I took in college and also to master how to use the ubiquitous Excel program for statistical analysis. I was not willing to try any other statistical analysis softwares.

This book exceeded my expectations in both regards. It explains key concepts very well, backed by real-life examples to illustrate their practical aplications using Excel. I have had an easier and more enjoyable time both reviewing my statistics and learning Excel.

Statistics for the rest of us
This book accomplishes a great deal - it moves the reader from basic, descriptive statistics to inferential statistics quickly and logically. Each chapter is organized so you can repreat the steps using Excel functions, the Excel Data Analysis Add-in, or using traditional notation. The data are included on a disk, so you don't have to re-key. Also included are Dr. Gerbing's own templates, which include important tools that the Redmond Raiders left out.

I was fortunate enough to have had a course with Dr. Gerbing; I know that he has spent the last five or so years refining his teaching methods, so MBA students can learn AND apply statistics to their business lives. This book is truly a great accomlishment and a contribution to business people who want to use regression analysis - or just have a better understanding of the components that make for solid market research. In an age where we all spend thousands on research studies, it is more than a good idea to know what questions to ask of the syndicated research we're offered, or how to set up the framework for a proprietary study. As a marketing professional, I have found this text very useful. Now - if you can get Gerbing to market the powerpoint slides ...

Recommended as the basic work on IT industry
Varian - Shapiro "Information rules" made it worldwide. Now comes - actually from UC Berkely again - a systematic work about the things many people believe to understand.

Software creation is here seen in context of industry, govrnement and economy - not only business, not merely science.

Excellent reading to get the correct ideas behind the buzzwords. Very good for people, who already got the hunch of important changes happening from Castells (Network Society).

Must Reading for Anyone in Information Technology
Messerschmitt and Szyperski have collaborated on a unique book, that provides a snapshot of the software industry from many different vantage points at a time of rapid change in both technology (components and objected oriented programming) and business models (Internet as a channel). The different vantage points they use suggest a number of trends that the software industry will follow over the next decade that are far different from that in the popular trade press or business press. They highlight why software is different intrinsically from an economics vantage point: the first release of a software product can cost significant time and money, yet further copies take relatively little to no time or money to generate; the more copies of software in use, the more valuable the software can become; experience has shown that as the number of people increases to get software product releases done, it can take more time, not less, to finish the work. This book will be like a fine wine: as it ages, it should get better.
