Mysteries of Telecommunication Revealed
Those for whom the "acronym"ous world of telecommunications is foreign territory will find Karen Patten's book invaluable. As a novice in the study of telecommunications I found her definitions and explanations to be thorough yet clear and easily understood. This is a high achievement given the technical complexities of the industry and the ongoing confusion which has plagued the industry since its deregulation in 1996. Her chapter on the changes in the telecommunication industry should be required reading for every consumer who struggles to decipher the myriad charges which appear on their monthly telephone bill!

An excellent, informative guide.
Organizations need to adopt networking technology in order to function properly, and Data Networking Made Easy goes beyond most books about LANS to cover connecting across public networks and using a variety of networking technologies. An excellent guide for any interested in learning all the options in a networking environment.

Great Service!!!
Every thing was done professionally, I am complete satisfied with the service I recieved.

Realistic college text; useful to working professionals
This book was written as a college-level text. It also targets IT professionals who need to quickly understand the differences between e-commerce applications and traditional information systems as a secondary audience.

As a college-level text this book is one of the few that will prepare students for the real world. The scope of topics, level of detail, and carefully chosen case studies are impressive because they capture the key knowledge areas and issues that working professionals deal with.

As a refresher for working professionals who need to understand the big picture and intermediate details associated with e-commerce applications this book's wide coverage of topics makes it ideal. While students will need to work through the entire book, an IT professional can choose the topic areas selectively. For example, the chapter on E-commerce applications that covers supply chain management, e-tialing and auction sites will have more appeal to a working professional, while the chapters on programming will probably capture a student's interest.

Additional features that will be of interest to each audience include:

- Students and Instructors: (1) CD ROM that comes with the book contains exercises, source code, and additional study material, (2) a companion web site that provides 296 PowerPoint slides that augment the course, and (3) links to over 750 web sites that reinforce the lessons.

- Working professionals: the CD ROM that comes with the book contains the full text of the book, which will allow searching for any topic or keyword. This is an excellent research resource, that is all the more valuable since the book is up-to-date and covers current technologies (Java, relational databases, XML, etc.), as well as important business issues.

A Calculus book that made me fall for Calculus
I have always wanted to gain a degree of mastery over the subject of Calculus, knowing the power and elegance of this topic of mathematics. I had searched in vain for a text that made the subject matter comprehensible, fearing no such beast existed. I stumbled onto this book virtually by accident and to my great surprise and delight, I found the text easy to read, with the subject material presented in a sequential manner that aided complete understanding. At no stage of the text did I suffer the pangs of not knowing where some pertinent information had arisen. Further, many of the examples in the book had a practical application of Calculus to the real world, making the subject even more rewarding to learn. In short, this Calculus Book has made the Calculus a pleasure to learn. My enduring and hearthelt thanks to MR. HOFFMANN and MR BRADLEY for their wonderful gift to me

Very useful
For those who need to see this course in college, this is the book to have. It's very explicit, and offers a very useful Algebra review at the end; extremely important to refresh our memory from highschool. Highly recommended!!

An Outstanding Book!
I am roughly at the half-way point in this book but I must say that I am very pleased with it. The content is thorough and very well presented. David Michael does a great job at explaining the Indie scene as a contrast and comparison of the mainstream Game publishers. The context is placed in the Indie spere of development and related business practices. Short (~10 pages), but complete, chapters offer byte size knowledge to help you move from the 'great idea' stage to a finished product. It will not help you physically create the game but rather be a mentor to guide you during the development life cycle. Bottom line: get this book!

Excellent starting point
I recommend The Indie Game Development Survival Guide to anyone that is thinking about trying to create and sell a game. There is a lot of information that is needed in order to actually sell a game and this book gives you a general over site of everything you need to think about.

It's a great reference tool to refer to when you need ideas. No matter what stage of the game development you are in, this book gives you answers to questions that might arise.

With game development there isn't one certain road to follow. With this book you receive in depth information on roads that you might not have thought of.

Acquired or acquiring? If so, you *need* this book
I read this book because it was strongly recommended by a friend whose advice turned out to be invaluable. The approach that Ms. Brown takes is one of the most practical, straightforward I have come across. If followed it will reduce technical, cost and schedule risks that are rampant in application integrations, especially those to which this book targets: gluing together systems that have been separately developed by two organizations and now have to be merged into a coherent whole when one of the organizations acquires the other. The seven models proposed each address a unique requirement or situation based on a pattern. That Ms. Brown has managed to distill integration challenges into seven models is an impressive feat. It shows the level and depth of her experience, and from what I read in the book, combined with my own experience, she has completely thought this through.

One of the most important aspects of this book is that it's balanced between both business and technical considerations, and also embodies the best project management practices. As someone who takes applications into production and provides support I think that the overall approach set forth in this book also strikes a good balance between integration activities and post-integration support. It's refreshing to find a book that accomplishes this.

This is an important book that serves two purposes: it is a solid collection of application integration models that should be in the toolbox of all IT/IS professionals whose job entails enterprise architectures or application integration, and it is a clear roadmap for those folks who have just been told that their company just acquired another and the systems need to be integrated into a coherent whole without disruption the business operations of either organizational unit. It serves both purposes exceptionally well. Bravo Ms. Brown!

One of the most important books on EAI published this year
Ms. Brown has given us a gift: a book that thoroughly describes the challenges of implementing integrated enterprise applications, and how to overcome those challenges using proven methods that address both business and technical issues. This book is divided into four parts: (I) Techniques, (II) Catalog of Integration Models, (III) Applying Integration Models and (IV) Appendices.

The three chapters that comprise Part I sets the context for EAI, introduces integration models (which are, in essence, patterns) and discusses the environment for integration modeling. I liked this part for the following reasons: it focuses on business imperatives, and includes risk factors from a company and industry perspective; it bridges both business and technical views, and provides a frank discussion of the challenges faced by the implementation team. One of the highlights of part I is the approach to selecting a project approach and advice on placing project deliverables in context.

Part II is a catalog of integration models that contains seven chapters, each devoted to a specific model template. The templates are provided in a fixed format is closely aligned to Design Patterns (by Gamma, et al), making selection of the appropriate model for your organization or project straightforward. The format is: Description, Discussion, When the Template Applies, Examples, Benefits and Consequences, Realization, EAI Applications to which it applies, and Templates that work well with the one discussed. The seven integration models for which templates are provided are: Cycle, Seed, Web, Flow, Wave, Ring, Cell and Tree. I thought it was interesting how the templates themselves could be classified by geometric shape, but as you read through them it makes sense. Moreover, you begin to look at the integration models in a different way, which in turn, triggers creative thoughts.

The author intersperses case studies and technical discussions in Part III, Applying Integration Models. The case studies are: Chapter 12-Enterprise Resource Planning and Chapter 15 - Integration in Telecommunications; technical discussions include: Chapter 13-Using Integration Models to Synthesize Industry Models and Chapter 14-Data Strategy, Warehousing, and Architecture with Integration Models. The case studies and technical discussions not only added a dimension of credibility to Parts I and II, but reinforced one another.

Sample artifacts included in Appendix B are valuable. I especially like the checklist of factors that indicate an increased need for integration, but the sample letters, and other documents are also useful.

This book is to implementing enterprise applications what David Linthicum's Enterprise Application Integration is to EAI architecture. As a side note, if you decide to check out Mr. Linthicum's book, get B2B Application Integration, which is a more updated version of his Enterprise Application Integration. I not only give it a solid five stars, I also recommend it as one of the most important books available on EAI.

Excellent 2 CD Set
Five of Maxwell's books (with five more you can unlock), 23 audio messages, 3 video segments and a slick format make this collection well worth the price.

Not only do you get great leadership lessons, but this CD also contains several Bible versions, inlcuding the Nelson Study Bible (NKJV), which is probably the most in-depth study Bible available.

Excellent set in a good format.

The Leading Edge On Leadership
I subscribe to John Maxwell's electronic leadership series and the articles there are FANTASTIC! If you want to learn MORE on being a leader, you need this material and now being published on CDROM format makes it even easier to read and search topics that you need.

Learn how to communicate the good and the bad news
The key message of this book is that you must listen carefully to your customers and co-workers, hearing every word, but also the broad message. Many of the primary problems in the business-customer relationship are due to different definitions of commonly understood words, such as "regular", "extended", "timely" and even "month." Whole phrases are subject to different interpretations, and the author recites an instance from a trip to her physician. After examination, the physician pronounced her condition as "unremarkable." At first she was angry, and yet having the sense to think before making a fist, she realized that was the doctor's way of saying she was fine.
Which also points out what is the most critical condition for success dealing with anyone, whether they are in the group described by the book title or not. As e-mail use has shown us, it is almost impossible to avoid saying something that can be taken in an offensive manner. Business is about getting things done, and you don't complete complex tasks by making small talk about the weather. You do things by communicating the current situation as it is, even if it is not what the receiver wants to hear and it is necessary to take people to task. Therefore, your best policy is to avoid getting angry quickly, developing a thick skin and concentrating on completing the tasks at hand.
Naomi Karten puts forward advice that is simply not heard often enough. Forget about all of the sensitivity nonsense and concentrate on forms of communication that can be used to explain frustrations, demands, concerns, and all of the other things that go wrong between people trying to work together. Understand that ambiguity is the natural state of affairs, so look for the real meanings rather than the individual words. Whenever you hear something, put your feelings aside for a short time until you clearly understand what the message really was.
The phrase "People who want more, better, faster, sooner, NOW!" is just a long way of describing "customers", so anyone in business must be prepared to deal with such people. In this book, you will learn how to approach customers with your feelings placed in the background and all of your information receivers on high-band. With business growing more competitive every day, this may be the only way to remain a viable economic entity.

A useful guide to create good understandings with others.
Managing Expectations is a book for everyone who deals with customers or other people with expectations. Using a customer service model, Ms. Karten describes the ways in which people successfully and unsuccessfully manage what people expect. She advises on how to create better working relationships by fostering clearer understandings of the circumstances and limitations which exist in any situation.

Failure to manage expectations often has catestrophic consequences to projects and relationships. Those who want to build long-term relationships and successful projects will consider the cautions and advice presented here.

Ms. Karten uses gentle humor and warmth to tell us the lessons that we need in order to better communicate what we know to our clients.

People who are clients can also use this book to better understand the process of working collaboratively.

It's a fine book for evoking new insights and inspiring better communication.

MCSE Consulting Bible

One of the things most readers claim they want in computer books is real-world experience: "Don't just regurgitate the manual," they tell us. "Give us hands-on experience. Tell us how useful features really are--dare to break from the company line!"

How ironic is it, then, that one of the best "real-world" computer books written this year won't do a damn thing for your computer experience, but could well add thousands to your salary or save you from possible bankruptcy?

If you're thinking of making the break and going freelance--a dream many techies share--consider the MCSE Consulting Bible. It's a priceless resource that is stuffed to the gills with honest, useful advice on all levels. Want to know what sorts of psychological tactics you'll need to pursue if you want to be successful? Check. Need to know how to plan, bill, and seek new employees for your business? Check. Want to know what sort of clients you should seek out, how well your business should be doing by a certain point, and what specific certifications are desirable for what niche markets? Check, check, check--and this is all given with outside opinions from experts, and backed by the opinions of author Harry Brelsford, a man who is healthily skeptical about your chances for success. But he'll tell you, frankly and honestly, what it takes.

The book is split into essentially two sections. The first part deals with what it takes to be a successful consultant, and has separate chapters for methodologies, writing proposals, managing (and hiring) staff, retirement strategies, customer service, and garnering good referrals, among other things. These sections are written engagingly, backed by a lot of personal opinions. But to bolster those opinions, in every chapter there is a "Guest Sermon," where Brelsford finds an expert in the field and asks him for his or her take on the issue at hand. Also scattered through the book are "Ask the Expert" sections, in which the author responds to various e-mails he's gotten over the course of his career.

Most of this is very well written, except for the portions where he recommends using software. The chapter on writing proposals, for instance, offers some general guidelines on proposal writing, but is little more than a walk-through of how to use Microsoft Proposal Builder--admittedly, there are some sample proposals in the appendices, but it would have been more useful to see, say, a bad actual proposal rewritten into a winning one. Likewise, the section on project management is mostly a Microsoft Project walk-through with a thin coating of the basic types of projects. Anyone who's software-savvy enough to get their MCSE doesn't need tutorials--they need an understanding of what they need to accomplish with the programs, and here the bible falls slightly short.

The lack of substance in these areas, however, is easily outweighed by the solid information in other areas. Brelsford tells you how to think in terms of profitability and always have an eye for the bottom line--something many outwardly professional techies forget. And he's realistic, knowing that it takes a lot of money to stay on top of all the certifications, a lot of nonbillable hours to keep your skills well-honed, and a lot of erratic schedules to work effectively with customers from the frenzy of first installation to the slow trudge of occasional patch updates. He gives advice with the full understanding of the unique restraints of the techie professional, and tells you how to work around them.

The latter half of the book gets specific in dealing with various areas that MCSE consultants tend to specialize in, and here too the book is useful--though probably not quite as useful as the first half, since anyone with the experience to go freelance probably already has a fairly well-defined area of specialization. Still, it breaks down most of the major fields--DBA, developer, small business, enterprise consulting, dot-com, Exchange--and tells you what sorts of talents you'll need to have in order to make it. What sorts of tasks will you be expected to accomplish? What kind of personality do you have? What certifications are de rigeur? If you're looking to cross over, this book should help you immensely.

In short, this is a solidly researched and well-written career book that is easily worth the money whether you're looking to go freelance or looking for ways to improve your existing business. Highly recommended. --William Steinmetz

Covers it all and says the unsaid things
I started my own consulting business and bought quite a few books. By far, this book tells you what you really need to know. It gave me the tips I really needed, not just the "philosophy" but also the down-and-dirty details. If you are looking to start an IT consulting business, even if you aren't into the "Microsoft-centricity" of the MCSE, this book has a LOT to offer. I am dubbing it indespensible for the IT consultant just starting out... AND those already in business.

MCSE Consulting 101
Are you a techie that has been thinking about making money on your own? This is the first technical consulting book that gives you all the information from A to Z in the MCSE business. This book distinctly differs from other consulting books by not just talking about how to be a consultant, but how to run a successful business as a good MCSE consultant. It is apparent that the author practices what he preaches and freely shares his knowledge and experience with the reader. Partitioned into "Finder, Minder and Grinder" routines this book includes a broad range of topics and touches all angles of the biz, which give food for thought in every possible direction. If you are a MCSE consultant or just thinking about striking out on your own, this book is a great reference, easy and engaging to read, full of useful information and thought provokers. My favorites are Brelsford's Rules of Ten, considerations of different market niches, a very well written sample proposal and tons of links to helpful websites. If you want to add value to your MCSE consulting, have a note pad ready while reading this book.
