Asp - Application Service Providing: The Ultimate Guide to Hiring Rather Than Buying Applications

Unfortunately outdated
This book consists of reports, which describe the state of the ASP market about a year ago. While writing my diploma thesis about this topic, I had to realise, that this topic loses its actuality rather quickly as the only constant element in the ASP market is change. The book focuses on so-called First-Generation ASPs putting most business emphasise on quick market presence. In the meantime the market has matured leading to 2nd and 3rd Generation ASPs, which qualifies the reports contained in this book as partially outdated basic knowledge. Today, potential ASP customers and providers use far more complex strategies to utilize the ASP concept.

Just a Collection of Whitepapers
I purchased this book looking for an overall, logically flowing picture of the ASP concept. While the content is valid, I was disappointed to find that it was just a collection of publicly available white papers and industry articles. The book is smaller than I thought - only 300 pages, and it contains advertisements for various vendors (the only color sections of the book). There are many graphs and pie charts that are useless because the different segments are all different shades of gray, and I think that it is far too much to spend for what seems to be a collection of white papers an intern could assemble after surfing the web for an afternoon.

Reaction on Mr. Madden's review
I don't agree with mr Brian Madden. I can image why there are some ads in the book, but they did help me to reach and to get in touch with these vendors. The articles are clearly whitepapers, casestudies and reports of research companies and the are not commercial in my opinion, they only inform you of the several options. The HOTT Guide gave me an objective idea of the possibilities of ASP for my company, although I already knew some of it.

Auditing: Concepts for a Changing Environment with IDEA Software

Poor Excuse for a Book
Auditing: Concepts for a Changing Environment, is not only poorly written but it lacks in-depth, real life situations which makes up the auditing profession. Not only are the chapter questions mediocre at best, but after the first five chapters everything else is a review. I would advice no one to buy this book, not even the biggest accounting nerds.

more complicated then neccessary
I read this book as well as was a student of Larry Rittenburg at the UW-Madison. If his teaching were not as solid his book would seem confusing and uninformitive to any other reader. This book seems to have been hurried to the market to compete with his fellow professors. I would recommend a more straight forward and interesting text one that better represents the Audit practice.

A Bargain at Thrice the Price
As a connoiseur of auditing texts, I found Rittenberg and Schweiger's work to be pure genius. The authors' use of real-world examples and well-placed and helpful exhibits, interspersed with the occasional comfortable aside, make this a work not to be missed. Well done, Dr. Rittenberg. Well done, Dr. Schweiger. Well done, indeed.

Computing Calamities: Lessons Learned From Products, Projects, and Companies that Failed

Not this author's best work
Robert L. Glass writes well and usually has something interesting and useful to say, but he wrote only 15% of the pages in this book. The rest of it is articles from publications such as the Wall Street Journal, CIO Magazine, Information Week, Global Technology Business, and Business Week. If you're a regular reader of these publications, as I am, much of this book is quite literally old news. The lack of original material is a disappointment.

Disappointing rehash
Most of the book is old articles copied from the trade press, with no effort to follow up! One would very much like to know what actually went wrong in these case studies of failure, but the author never exerts himself to find out.

In addition the author's prose is filled with redundancies, as if it had never been edited.

Excellent Work....like the last one
Glass's book is an excellent & insightful book just like his previous book on software runaways. Having read academic and popular press literature on software risk & project risk with great interest, I would give this book 5 stars on its insightful organization. A MUST read for all of you folks suffering with lousy projects!

The Oracle Edge: How Oracle Corporation's Take No Prisoners Strategy Has Made an $8 Billion Software Powerhouse

Too superficial
I picked this book up a couple of years ago and when I read it then, I thought it was too unreal, too fictitious. Everything the author wrote about Oracle was that Oracle is the paradise and there is not a thing wrong about Oracle.

I read it again a month back and thinking it would changed my mind. It didn't. In fact, it made it even worse. I have been with several high profile Silicon Valley tech companies and despite the rosy outlook of these companies (especially during the dot-com days), it was not all heaven. The author failed miserably to inject realism into Oracle machinery. I would definitely give this book a thumbs down.

This is not a "business advice" book
This is an interesting, but distorted view of Oracle. Any company that has to deal with Oracle can tell you that Oracle has many more challenges than this book points out. It is not a "how to run a business" book as much as "hey, we successed in spite of our errors". Although they were successful due a lot of hard work, they made many more mistakes than were indicated in this book. The book is worth reading if your company is using Oracle products. In understanding the hands-on control from Larry Ellison, the dominance that Larry plays in the running of the corporation and how his tempermental style effects their business decisions, Oracle's selling style, and the culture of the company, it will help you make better decisions in how to deal with the company.

Insight & Frosting
Much of this work seems like a light and fluffy tribute to Oracle, without looking very hard at what might be ethical issues with the business practices described. If, however, you are negotiating a contract with Oracle, some of the basic hardball tactics described in the book will prepare you for the session and help to educate any starry eyed rookie team members regarding what they are up against when playing in the big leagues.

Worst accounting software I've ever encountered
This software was provided free with my Payroll Accounting textbook. The textbook itself is very well written, and is easy enough to follow. The software, however, is another story.

I am required to use this software to complete a "Payroll Problem" final project for my class. This software is so poorly put together, with help files that are less than helpful. The book instructs us to follow steps to enter data in the format desired. This is quite the challenge. For example, we're told to code Liability Payments to their respective vendors; this would normally be a reasonable request, however it was nearly impossible to even find how to do this, and when I finally did, it didn't work. I followed the instructions provided in the "help" files, and got no results. As I sit here, I still have no Cash Payments Journal, nor have I ever seen a Vendor List. When working with the "W-2 Statements" it makes no allowance for tax deferred deductions, so total wage amounts are incorrect, making the "W-2 Form" feature completly useless.

I work with Quickbooks on a daily basis (which I also have an issue or two with), and there are virtually no similarities between this program and REAL accounting software. I can see why this was given away for free, and I can only hope no one actually tries to use this to keep books for a business.

Integrated Accounting 3e by Klooster & Allen
An excellent textbook for learing the basics of computerized accounting. Very well presented, starting with an overview of chart of account layout, AR/AP, Payroll, Partnerships & Corporations. The last chapter on setting up a complete accountig system is really nice. I am using for self study & find the book easy to follow. This is set up with college level 2 reading level assumed. This is the text currently being used by a local college for their course. Very well worth the full price of the product.

Integrated Accounting for Windows
This book assumes you have taken a basic course in accounting, or have basic accounting background. (I find that you can get by without the accounting background, but it will take longer to complete the course). I find the text very well laid out, almost self explanatory. This is the text that most Junior Colleges are using at this time. The company is very quick at resolving any questions/problems you may encounter. I reccomend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about computerized accounting.

Very boring. No practical uses.
I was forced to buy this book for college course work. I found it boring, and I spent a lot of time trying to read the small print.

Good for reference
I think this book is a QUICK reference for any software professional working in a team or independent, ofcourse, in management perspective. This could have been had focus on certain important concepts instead of just introducing the names. I often refer to this book for a quick reference at work as I am involved in / leading a development team.

Excellent reference
This is a text based, pre-graphics, book. It doesn't have all the gee-whiz graphics of some of the new books on project management. It's down and dirty and gets to the point quickly. I consider this book a classic. I keep going back to it on a regular basis as a reference and follow some of Mr. Bennattan's recommendations.

I, too, didn't think much of the book when I first started but it is has grown on me quite a bit. It's concise and informative. Try the chapter on estimation, it serves as a good intro into estimation techniques.

Yes, "Rapid Development" is probably better but "On Time, Within Budget" is deserves it's place in your project management library.

Good Book with Outdated Software
The good news is that this book is very nicely done, providing a useful foundation to beginner and intermediate options traders. I found that I learned quite a lot about the interactions between option pricing and the various factors influencing pricing. The author provides numerous case study examples utilizing the OP-EVAL(TM) software included with the book. A majority of the book contains detailed examples describing how to use the software and interpret the output. The bad news is that the software will not run on current Windows operating systems (Windows 98 or newer). So don't buy the book if you want to try the software on your own. Efforts to contact the author, through the publisher McGraw-Hill, about the possibility of updating the software, have been unsuccessful. Otherwise a good book.

For All Options Traders
I trade options, and know that any options trader will benefit from this book. There are many parallels across markets, and this book delves into an area that isn't written about in detail anywhere else, and does a good job of illustrating the nuances of index options.

I also recommend "Credit Derivatives" by Tavakoli, for more about structuring index options in note form. Tavakoli also explains credit default options in detail.

An understanding of options delivered accurately and clearly
This book demystifies the factors that make options such an attractive and powerful trading and investment tool. Bittman's clarity leaves no misunderstanding or ambiguity about how things work in plain language and steers you clear of common beginners' mistakes. The included software provides a hands-on interactive learning experience to reinforce ideas introduced in the book and is a useful tool to evaluate potential trades.

The sections that lay out trading plans and strategies present a straightforward and disciplined approach to identifying and evaluating attractive trading opportunities. Although geared to options, these are helpful to consider no matter what markets or instruments one is trading.

Read Bittman first to get a solid foundation, then move on to the MacMillan books for the post-grad experience.

An excellent value for the price!

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!
Do not be fooled by the description of this book. It describes features that do not exist...
This book does not contain working code, and the example site has been broken for more than two years, from the date of the first review. There are files missing which are essential for the example code to work. The contact info for the authors is invalid also...
THIS BOOK IS NOT SUPPORTED BY THE PUBLISHER. I have emailed the publisher several times over the last two months, and I have gotten no response. They should not continue to sell this book...
I believe the only positive reviews here are either bogus or based on the positive impression the book gives before you really get into it and discover all of the flaws that make it unusable.

The Code and the Sample Site do NOT work - A USELESS BOOK
I bought the book and followed the instructions in the book, unfortunately, like others said that the code does not work. I tried the url listed in the book, but what I got is the error message! The book "Building e-Commerce Sites with the .NET Framework by Jason Bentrum (Author), James Whatley (Author)" is useless.

Code can be made to work
The code was written with a late beta of .NET. It is strange how the code and website have not been updated, but in about 3 hours I was able to get the code to compile and run. There are numerous 3rd party products now with more features than this codeset and cost maybe $99, but if you want to make a go of it, like I said, you can get the code to work.

some thing useful, but else is nothing
actually it's a nice book.but site server is a difficult software. If u want detail information ,this book is not a Bible.u may take it as nice tutorial of some subject.if u want detail information , don't count on online help either.it's total nothing .

Good examples, lots of pictures, good starting point
This is a good how-to book. I have read many of the chapters in the first three sections. They give good examples of how to setup and configure many areas of Site Server 3. It is better than drudging through all the online documentation. The topics are covered in a good order, building up in complexity. The last section of the book discusses Site Server Commerce edition and there are even chapters that specifically talk about sample online stores. Site Server 3 is such a huge program that books like this really help get you acquainted with all the different features. I recommend it to anyone setting up Site Server 3. I am glad I bought it! :)

Very good introduction to Site Server 3.0 & eCommerce
I recommend this book to anyone planning to use Site Server for hosting web-shops on the net. It give very good understanding of modules and features in Site Server 3.0 and I learned also lot about eCommerce. This is very good book for beginners, but also for planning and take a right decision.
