its for win 3.1 and demos are expired
I bought this book...its only for 3.1...and the first demo i tried to install was noted as expired...sup with that???

A very well-done book, deserving a generous rating.
Where as I would prefer to put it at about 4.95, 5 stars is close enough. The thing that I most like about this book, which I am still in the middle of reading, is the obvious class and "beauty" of the author's writing; simply true class. To put it into a little more detail, this man (Daniel Burnstein) seems to display the impressiveness of a well educated, academically structured man, and yet has the cutting edge ability to reach out to people of all types by writing in plain, talented english. I have read other books and what I often find is that I have to go back over sections of the book(s) to try to retain the information. In Burnstein's book it was a totally different experience -- even after reading any one chapter, I was easily able to reassemble the information from that chapter in my head without the book in my presence.. I would recommend this book to people that want to do business the right way. Burnstein is right in saying that his book is good for business managers and owners that want quality knowledge and education by doing it on their own time.

everyone needs this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is superb...ignore my previous commment...amazon.com wont delete it...

The future of software is decision-support software--going beyond clerical software, such as MS Project.

I am so impressed with this book and software that I am going to spend time promoting it. Get it and let me know what you think.

Another bad SAP Book
It seems that the ratio of bad SAP books to good ones is about 99 to 1. This book, from a publisher who usually produces quality books, is of little use to a Java programmer, who could learn as much from the JCO sample code, and of no use to the ABAP programmer who will only get into deep trouble fast. After a terrible discussion of the JCO library, the author then moves on to a bad discussion of the Jakarta Struts framework, which is a book by itself. Save the money, people.

Great way to keep marketable
I found the book really helpful. It didn't bog down into all the exceptions and special cases in Java. It was easy to read and straight forward. It covers new developments in Java and SAP, like using Apache Struts. I found the examples to be helpful. The thing that was most important to me was the fact the book introduced me to new technology that was relevant to me, where I want to go, and where I think the market will be going too.

Completely disagree with prior review.
I have to say that I completely disagree with the prior review. I found this book to be both helpful and insightful. Not to mention, it was actually enjoyable to read. APress continues to publish some great texts.

IT EXPIRES ON AUG. 30, 2003
5 stars for the content, however, I gave it 1 star because the software EXPIRES on August 30, 2003 (less than 9 months from when I purchased the software and wrote this review). After the expiry date, you are conveniently prompted to where your may purchase a new version of the software (I tested it by changing the date on my computer). The expiry date is NOT mentioned anywhere on this website, unless you look carfully at the picture of the front cover ("look inside").

Terrific!!
Without question the most interesting (just plain fun) of all the brief and/or electronic accounting books available. You "play" this serious academic CD similar to the way you play sophisticatred CD games like "Sim City 3000". And, the playing is so enjoyablle that you're unaware that in the process you've learned all of the basic fundamentals of financial accounting most anyone ever needs to know.!

Electronic Textbook of the Future
This is a fully interactive electronic textbook that covers the essentials of Financial Accounting. This is one of the most interesting and informative pieces of instructional software (CD) I have ever encountered!

A Decent Introduction
"Managing Multimedia Projects" is a good introduction for the software/multimedia newbie, or for the manager who needs to understand the basics of what the staff is talking about. I used this book as a jumping off point, and found the chapters on "The Perils of Partnership" and planning and scheduling most helpful.

However, Strauss covers a lot of ground (web sites, kiosks, slide shows, cd-roms) in about 200 pages, which means that the surface has only been scratched. Read this to figure out what it is you don't know, then come back to Amazon.com.

Managing Multimedia Projects
This is an excellent book for the new manager of a multi-media development team. The basic concept behind the book is that multi-media is software. As such, it provides an excellent process model that works for most multi-media projects. It even provides sample projects and describes how each project fits the process.

I found it an easy read, and the book has been most helpful in the development of my own multi-media team and our processes. It works. Good stuff!

A helpful guide for multimedia managers
After reading this book I found it very helpful on my job (I am a Webmaster and Multimedia Developments Manager in an University). It helped me to get a "top level view" on multimedia projects and also help me to organize better my ideas, and to have a clear overview of tasks involved in any multimedia development. I really recommend it.

No help for Home and Biz
I thought this book would have info for ALL versions of MS Money 2003. Not. No mention of any of the biz version at all.

good but you need better advice
This was a good book, like the dummy books easy to read etc. However, I really loved The Intersection of Joy and Money. Mackey McNeill takes you right to the core of the issue.

Version Coverage
I think John Simpson should have looked at the front cover of this book before posting his negative review. The front cover clearly states that the book covers only the Standard and Deluxe version of the software. There's no claim that it covers the Small Biz version.

I loved the book very much
Although I didn't read the whole book,I feel like I know everything already. I learned a lot from this book.

I taught from this book.
I used the "hands-on" exercises to brush up my own knowledge of the Office components and I had my students use them in a closed computer laboratory setting. For me and for my students, those exercises were extremely effective. This is the fastest way to master Office.

Boring to death
This textbook is so boring that although I made an A in the class, I couldn't wait to finish it. It uses too many technical words, it makes reference to subjects that students with a few courses in Human Resources know already. It would be better if it offered some real life examples. If you are a teacher looking for a textbook, please keep looking! If you are a student whose teacher assigned you this book..... I am sorry for you!

Adjunct Professor Uses For All His Classes
This is an outstanding book. It is very easy reading, organized and it communicates information to the student. It is loaded with easy following diagrams which reinforce the material, and it is loaded with real world Corporate America and Military Organizational Behavior examples to support the text work. It has an OUTSTANDING CASE Section which again reinforces the material and makes the student apply the concepts learned in the chapters. Also, this text is complete with alot of Personal Assessment Exercises which make you think about the type of person you are, how to improve yourself in working with others. I've used in now for 3 different schools and the students enjoy it...Mainly for the Easy Reading and the way it introduces the concepts. Price is IRRELEVANT. You can go spend $40 on an Organizational Behavior text and you won't get anything out of it because it is poorly written, no cases and no assessments. Highly recommend for any instructor who wants his students to learn. Great reference book also. Don't sell it!!!

Excellent book
I'm reading this book only because it is required for my class, but in reading it, had I known about its quality, I would have purchased it anyhow. It's a very expensive book (and I do doubt whether it's worth $100--but then, I think books are overpriced nowadays)--but the content is very good. Maybe the difference between the previous reviewer and me is that I don't know much about organizational behaviour and haven't compared it to other books in this field.

Most Confusing Accounting Textbook On The Market Today.
This Book begins using something called horizontial statments and then in chapter 5 switches to regular T accounts thus confusing students completely, I have yet to find a student that tells me the book is easy to understand or useful. It would be helpful if there was a solutions manual. Our school will change books next semester. It's not even good enough to make dorm furniture.

A good book with the right instructor
I've read the reviews stating that this is a confusing book. I disagree completely. Although the author does not immediately delve into traditional T-accounts, the introduction of the "horizontal model" serves as a good foundation for building the awareness of the accounting equation that should be second nature BEFORE tackling T-accounts. The text's preface states: "A horizontal financial statements model replaces the accounting equation as the predominant teaching platform. The model enables students to VISUALIZE THE SIMULTANEOUS EFFECTS OF A SINGLE BUSINESS EVENT on the income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows." I felt as though this methodology was very effective for my learning style. Recording transactions in T-accounts came almost as second nature after mastering the horizontal model.

The "Working Papers" (a separate workbook) makes doing the assigned problems easy by providing a ready-made template for each problem. If you've had to draw your own T-accounts or your own journal in a notebook before, you will definitely appreciate this.

This text serves as a good introduction to the skills necessary to master financial accounting.

Great college companion!
This book is an excellent book to go with a Financial Accounting course. Everything is laid out in plain English, and shows you in diagrams and models exactly how each kind of transaction works. I recommend for professors everywhere to adopt this book for their clases. I'm glad mine did!

Accounting Information Systems: Essential Concepts and Applications, 4th Edition

An overkill textbook
As a textbook for an accounting systems class, this text is extremely cumbersome and long-winded. The authors seem to want to beat every subject to death, which results in excrutiatingly long chapters. Much of the material may be relevant to information systems majors taking it in a series of two classes, but is probably not suitable for an accounting major class. The writing style is boring and cryptic in many places. Look into the Gelinas/Sutton/Oram or Bodnar/Hopwood books for much better content and readability.

This is a university text book, not a reference book
I was looking for specialized information and I failed to understand that "Essential Concepts and Applications" meant just what it said: this is a university text book for students, and in this quality it certainly rates a high grade, (although I am not qualified to say if it rates $ 311), but as a reference book for professional in the field, it is useless: half of the book introduces essentials of computer technology, the other half essentials of accounting, but none in depth. I will be more careful in the future and can only lament the loss. However, as a study text book, it is probably very good.

One of the Best AIS Texts
I have used the fourth edition of this book, and it's one of the best AIS text books I have seen. It's concise, to the point, and informative. The fourth edition of this book gets the point across without being longwinded. Supplementary materials are included on a CD and can be accessed if needed or to supplement the text material. The problems are extremely useful. I highly recommend this text for use in accounting information systems classes.

How to Make Money Publishing from Home : Everything You Need to Know to Successfully Publish : Books, Newsletters, Greeting Cards, Zines, and Software

Author: Lisa Shaw

Drive-by
Lisa Shaw's advice on the economics of starting a home-based publishing business is something of a conundrum. First, she claims startup capital and money for living expenses can be unnecessary luxuries that sap motivation. "In fact," she says, "I had no money in my early publishing ventures, so I had to rely solely on my creativity and my intractable faith in my own abilities." Later, she recommends this reality check to help assess the level of risk you're comfortable assuming: "How would you react if you or a family member had to spend a week in the hospital and you didn't have health insurance because you needed the money to pay the mortgage?"

She goes on to take a superficial look at a number of self-publishing enterprises (including booklets, books, greeting cards, magazines, newsletters, newspapers, software and e-zines); considering ease of startup, initial investment, time commitment required and other factors.

Each chapter contains a brief profile of someone who's been successful in each line of home-based publishing, but little detail is given. The profiles tell what each entrepreneur did, but offer only limited information on how they did it, since names and contact information for the resources they used are kept secret. Despite citing the growth of the Internet as one of the key factors making home-based publishing viable, there's scarce information on how to utilize the World Wide Web as a marketing tool for your efforts. And in a chapter dealing with computer hardware and software titled "Technologically Speaking" - a chapter one would expect would be brimming with detail based on the book's topic - Shaw's best advice is, "do your own research...."

The final chapter begins, "You now have the knowledge and the tools necessary to start your own home-based publishing business."

Not unless you're prepared to do a lot of supplemental reading.

Unless you're looking for a very brief introduction to home-based publishing, there's no "how-to" in How to Make Money Publishing from Home.

Shaw's book is drive-by writing, without the research.

A Business Bible for "Old Dog" & "New Puppy" Entrepreneurs!
Publishing is part of the daily routine at my 13-year-old, home-based marketing and public relations firm. So, I was wondering what innovative things Lisa Shaw would be able to teach me in her book HOW TO MAKE MONEY PUBLISHING FROM HOME. Well, trust me--this "old dog" learned PLENTY of new tricks! Of course, there was the usual, basic stuff: reasons to begin a home-based business, financial assessments, skills needed and exactly what to expect from your new venture. But then I learned about: new niches I could fill within my company; some areas of publishing I'd NEVER want to try based on Ms. Shaw's descriptions (which saved me time); and Zines ... never had heard of them! There were a few things I wish the author HAD included, and perhaps they can be in a revised edition: a) contract examples for independent contractors, b) confidentiality statements for use with clients and c) since the book is about publishing, more updated information on copyright laws. Her Resource List included many of the titles I have relied on over the years, and which should be "must reads" for budding entrepreneurs. And, I'd like to add two titles to her list: 1)GETTING BUSINESS TO COME TO YOU by Paul & Sarah Edwards and Laura Clampitt Douglas and 2) 101 HOME OFFICE SUCCESS SECRETS by Lisa Kanarek. It was apparent in the content of Ms. Shaw's book that she had "been there" and obviously "done that" (publishing from home) extremely well! Warning: Running a home-based business isn't for sissies! Do you homework and research BEFORE you begin to save you a lot of heartache later. And, oh yeah, GOOD LUCK!

An Absolute Must for Anyone Opening a Home-Based Publishing
Have you ever dreamed of starting your own home-based publishing business? Have you been hesitant to put your plans into action? This book contains all the necessary ideas and strategies you will need to successfully launch and grow your business. Lisa Shaw, a home-based publisher, reveals to her readers everything they need to know to successfully start and run a home-based publishing business.

I have read and re-read the book so many times, the cover has gotten frayed. The genius of the book is that it is based in sound business practices and could theoretically be applied to any business. Whether you want to earn your living creating newsletters and brochures, zines and postcards with this excellent book at your side you can experience the satisfaction of building your own home-based publishing business.
