Good for converting theory to SPSS mechanics
I've found this book extremely helpful in understanding how to set up the kinds of analysis in SPSS that I want to conduct. I have the theoretical understanding to design the experiment and know what analyses need to be conducted (and could do it by hand if I had to), but this books helps me understand how to efficiently analyze my data within the program itself. Of related books I have looked at, this is the best. The one drawback is that it is designed as a classroom tool with exercises and learning points and not for the professional user. That space could be used for more information and explanation.

Simple overview of stats and how to use the software
SPSS is a popular software package used by graduate students in the social sciences, since it's a user-friendly software unlike some of the more complicated packages like SAS or Minitab that require programming language and a very sound understanding of statistics before you use them.

This guide is a basic guide to data analysis, and how to do this in SPSS. In fact, I would almost say that it is over simplified - almost all of these analyses can be done in Excel - except that it's not as easy to do it in Excel as it is in SPSS. Although SPSS itself may be somewhat simple compared to other stats software, the guide itself is marvelous.

The guide not only takes you through the steps of "how to" use the software package SPPS, but it also explains why you would want to run a particular analysis and how to interpret the results. It then goes on to explain how to modify those results or analysis according to your preferences.

For those people wishing to run more complex models, such as multiple regression, it is probably recommended that you know the statistical theory behind it, or are taking a class on it, rather than try to do this simply by using the guide, in order to make sure that you achieve a full understanding of the results. Because SPSS is so easy to use, it's easy to fall into the trap of having it run an analysis that is not so easy to interpret.

However, for people who are using SPSS as part of a course, this guide is absolutely great and I highly recommend it for any SPSS users, since the help function in SPSS itself is virtually useless.

Wonderful
This book leads you step by step to understand the statistics very well

Good guide to learn to develop financial models
This book has good examples that one can use to get up and going with basic to intermediate financial models. If you have to start somewhere, this is certainly it.

An execellent guide to intermediate/advanced models
This book does what it says it does in the title. It is a hand-on, step-by-step guide to constructing spreadsheet models to assist with decision making. The book guides the reader through intermediate to advanced modelling topics and is written at a level that is accessable to the novice and intermediate user. Advanced users are probably already familiar with the techniques presented.

Someone interested in the tiresome advanced mathematics behind the models should look instead to academic journals . . . someone interested in APPLYING that stuff to something useful should consider this book.

Excellent resource for marketing or finance manager
The book provides step-by-step method to guide you to build financial models for your company. Once you understand the basic foundation, you could use the tools to build more complex models.

Amway in cyberspace
The book is mildly helpful for people who want to sell Amway through its new facad...Quixtar. I joined Quixstar...same products different way of ordering..the internet...novel idea huh?

The book to me is the same sales pitch hype that you get from the people selling the original amway idea.

A Business Plan that Actually Works!
As a business owner and entrepreneur, I am always open to money making ideas and have been willing to take a chance on several that have paid off well in the past ten years. This Quixtar book is promoting a great idea that evidently is actually working. Well written. Great idea. Thank you Stewart and Sanders.

Clear, Concise, Convincing - A Great Read
As we all know, most business opportunites are surrounded by more hype than useful information, but this book cuts through that clutter. This is a great source of information relating to one of the most powerful income opportunites available.

Get the book and read it. If you don't believe what it says, return it, however if you want even more information look me up. :)

Written to appear to be a scholarly work.
The constant citing of references in text, instead of placing them in footnotes, makes the book very difficult to read. The author is also bent on being academic to the extreme. For example, he wastes considerable print (and the reader's time) on the definition of software and systems. Technically the book does have some merit in covering the principles and practice of installing Standard Software (ERP) but these points of illumination are far to hard find and nearly impossible to understand in this writing.

This boook links organization and process model
THis book is interesting book. Because Organization theory and system process intergrated. I recommand this book to process modeller, organization desinger and business modeller.

Excelent Book....Excelent Concept
I just finished this book. This could not have come soon enough for the initiatives that we want to initiate. I highly recomment this to anyone in an organization where profits, efficiency, are at the top of their priority.
The writing is clear, articulate and presented very well.
A great read

Could have contained more secrets
Pretty much everything that was said in this book was in my first choice (Invest in Yourself: Six Secrets to a Rich Life). If I would have known the book as going to be more than 80% tables, I would have never ordered it. Most of the information contained in this book can easily be found on the web. Needless to say, I was very disappointed with this book. I guess that's what happens when you buy online as opposed to in a bookstore. I could have flipped through this book in 20 or 30 seconds and realized that most of the pages were tables that needed more detail. What I found funny is that I received this book 2 whole days before I received my first choice and that's because my first choice supposedly was shipped before my second choice.

Not much of a secret
Here is what this book says. Paying your mortgage off faster than your payment schedule will save you tens of thousands of dollars. True, but what is the time value of that money you spent on your mortgage? Could you have "made" more in the stock market or somewhere else?

Yet the author belabors the point ad nauseam, giving examples about how much you can save paying a little more per month.

Basically, he does not give the full story. When you pay off your loan early, you are also paying a net higher interest rate. Scim this book at the bookstore. The best secret is not buying this book!

Good Advice!
This book provides excellent advice on what were until now--to many--secrets of the financial industry.

Just a note on a previous review: many banks say they will NOT accept prepayment. I know of a way that every bank approves up, that saves homeowners thousands in unnecessary interest and cuts years from their mortgage. I'll gladly call or email anyone who sends an email on this subject.

Not perfect, but helpful
There is certainly a need for secondary literature to describe a complex standard such as the CMMI. This book does a reasonable job to accomplish this. As it has been stated there are certainly weaknesses. For example the ratio between actual content and number of pages is in some areas pretty bad. One citation an the start of a chapter is nice, two is an over load. In order to gain a fair understanding of the CMMI standard is not sufficient and neither is this book. However, "CMMI Distilled" gets you a step closer.

Second Edition better than First Edition
I first read version one last year and after SEI intro class I have been giving several copies to team members at work.

This second edition bring the book upto level with 1.1. Guess I'll have give away my first edition.

This by far the best book for both someone just looking for an overview on CMMI. I use the book every day on the job and have found no better book to explain the CMM process to project managers.

Best CMMI book
This is the best book I have found todate on CMMI. The book covers both models and goes into some history of the whole process improvement process.

If you know CMM and want to move to CMMI or if you do not know anything about CMM, this book is a great starter.

I have purchased several copies for my company and everyone that I have given a copy to loves the book.

Not sure who would buy this
All full-time Microsoft employees received a complimentary copy of "Inside Out" just before it was released. I perused mine over lunch that day and confirmed that "Inside Out" is little more than a glossy, book-length version of the weekly internal newsletter--peppy, vapid, and grindingly dull. The only people I can see getting anything out of it are Microsoft employees, who can spend a diverting fifteen minutes skimming the index for the names of people they know. But of course they already own the book.

great book
It is a motivating book... a must read!

raw sociological material
This volume contains reminiscences of about a thousand MicroSoft employees who've worked there over its 25 year history, each about a third-page long in general chronological order. Interspersed are several longer pieces by the big guys like Bill and Paul and Bob. It reminds me of a high school yearbook. Most of the pieces are about business accomplishments, but there are digressions into work life, hobbies, and feelings about change at MS.

The book is from MicroSoft, but doesn't tell you how to be another MicroSoft. At first glance I thought it was a self-congratulatory piece on the occasion of MS 25th anniversary and mainly for its employees. But it contains a wealth of material on how a geek business culture operates. I feel it is unfinished. Some academic types needs to organize the material from the indiviual articles into a more constructive history.

Very disappointing for a beginner
I'm a Crystal Reports beginner. This book is not useful at all. You can easily create a simple report by following the steps described in first two chapters. However, after that, I was totally lost. The book describes a lot of things available in Crystal Reports without following samples. There are samples available for each chapter on the web. However, there was no connection between the samples and the book. I don't how the sample reports were produced and I just couldn't learn how to create reports by just reading the book. I'm very disappointed at the book.

Disappointing for the Non-Beginner
Here are the good points:
. the examples do follow through many of the features of Crystal Reports 9

Here are the bad points:
. there is a lot of unnecessary verbiage which pads out the size of the book; the verbiage is intended to make the text friendly, but for someone trying to determine how a feature works, it is highly obstructive and irritating
. the typeface in which the book is set is quite difficult to read
. the examples do not pass on understanding of the principles of each feature; the attempt to grasp a general concept gets drowned in the details
. many features (too numerous to mention) are glossed-over, including advanced features needed by the enterprise programmer
. the index includes references which are totally useless (e.g. McLuhan, Marshall who has absolutely nothing to do with the topic) and lacks completely necessary references
. while not a "1,200 page tome" (see another review) it is a 639 page tome

While the title includes the word "Master", this book is really for the programming beginner. For example, veterans do not need another tedious review of object-oriented programming, or SQL, or Basic language syntax, and so on. Seeing as there are entire libraries on these topics, the reviews are necessarily inadequate anyhow.

I wanted to learn Crystal Reports 9 and this was excellent
Already a SQL, VB, and .NET programmer, I wanted o add CR to the repetoire. I picked this book up from Amazon and was pleasantly surprised with the depth and descriptions. If you're looking for a book that gives you the low down on CR, pick this one up.

I also travel as a consultant often and this book is not a 1,200 page tome either (which I appreciate).

Enjoy!

Econometric Models and Economic Forecasts: Data Disk and Software Tools (Ibm)
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Education - Europe (01 June, 1991)
Author: Pindyck
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Hardly readable
This is one of the not so good econometric textbooks I've ever read. The mathematical notations appear to be very confusing and untidy, the text is excessively lengthy. But one who writes actuarial exams has to read it because it is the official textbook.

Great equations, bad explanations
The subject of econometrics is difficult for the beginner. I have yet to encounter a text that does a great job at explaining both the concepts and the math required to be proficient in this field. I completed three courses, two undergraduate and one graduate level, for which this book was the required text. Like most of my classmates I was never able to fully comprehend the concepts behind the numbers using this text alone. Now that I have a better grasp of econometrics I will vehemently suggest that this text provides a poor verbal description of what a student is actually doing when analyzing data. I found myself reading the chapters 2 or 3 times and still felt unsure of what was going on. Where this book is strong is in its presentation of equations. I highly recommend supplementing this text with Peter Kennedy's, "A Guide to Econometrics," which gives excellent verbal explanations but de-emphasizes the math. These two texts together make a great study for a difficult subject.

It's not that bad
I'm giving this book 5 stars largely to balance out the somewhat unfair reviews that were given. For what it is -- an econometrics textbook that tries to present overview of neginning to intermediate econometrics and forecasting WITHOUT a lot of linear algebra -- it's a pretty good book. While it has its rough spots, the book has many good features. One of the really good features of this book is presenting the material with an emphasis on model building ... a very important emphasis that is too often ignored in other econometrics texts. In an ideal world, this book deserves at least an average of 4 stars and would deserve more if the readers made things more readable and better incorporated advances in econometrics since previous editions.

Managing Technical People : Innovation, Teamwork, and the Software Process

Written for project leaders and managers, Managing Technical People delivers advice on how best to deal with the particulars of leading talented, technically minded people through project cycles. Author Watts Humphrey explains his methods for becoming a better project leader, recognizing and recruiting talented people for the right job, and effectively managing those people through the software product cycle. Most of his points are illustrated with anecdotes, tables, and charts, and there are plenty of the requisite multistep methods for improving specific problems.
Average review score:

If Humphrey was my manager I'd quit
Some of what he writes is correct, some of it is malarky. I read the entire book hoping he reveal some valuable information. Nope. Worse, in that his methods destroy morale. He seems to think that being a tyrant is the way to get a project done. Ive seen plenty of tyrants fail. Dont waste your time. Try reading Steve McConnel and Tom Demarco instead. (Peopleware and Rapid development)

Great management book
This is a great book for someone who's looking for cases and practical ideas. It doesn't give any numerical analyses or "magical" formulas. It's a guide for project managers and how to manage different people with different skills and professional perspectives.

Great book on Management!
This book is a great book for anyone who currently manages and wants to understand how to get the most out of his team. It has plenty of great suggestions to improve people-development as well as process-development. But more important than the suggestions, this book explains why and how certain courses of action succeed while others fail.

Too often technical people are promoted into management with no training. One cannot learn how to manage by merely performing technical tasks. One can learn by reading books like this one.
