Quickbooks Pro 2002: A Complete Course
Published in Paperback by Pearson Higher Education (August, 2002)
Author: Janet Horne
Amazon base price: $74.67
Average review score:

Best Book I've Seen for QB Pro 2002
Janet Horn's textbook is the best I have seen in my years of teaching Quick Books Pro. This is a tutorial text, meaning that YOU, the student, have lots of work to do. The instructions are usually clear and concise and VERY easy to follow. An "end of chapter" exercise allows you to see what you learned in the chapter by working without a tutorial other than what was in the chapter. This book contains many screen shots, some of which are not correct, but all of which demonstrate the process of using the book. I've taught accounting for 18 years and have taught computerized accounting for approximately 10 years.

Wow! Lots of forms and info...
This is a book for seasoned investors, brokers, and syndicators. It contains several hundred forms and checklists that will make sure you never forget an important element of the buying and selling process. However, it is not a "stand alone" book on real estate investing, but a book designed to accompany other texts on the subject.

Somewhat dated, but mostly valid collection of papers
This collection of IEEE and ACM papers written by an all star case of industry experts is showing its age in many areas. For example Barry Boehm's "A Spiral Model of Software Development and Enhancement", while valid for high-risk projects that push the technical envelope, is too risk-adverse for rapid or incremental development projects that are in increasing use.

However, some papers that you may be tempted to reject out-of-hand, such as TRW's Ada Process Model for Incremental Development of Large Software Systems is actually worth reading for organizations that have committed to the Rational Unified Process.

Overall, the range of papers covers every aspect of software engineering project management. The applicability of the papers collected in this book to contemporary practices is uneven. Some practices are either thoroughly documented and accepted best practices (the entire section of papers on project management), or are transitioning to newer models (the material on the CMM). On the other hand, some papers in this collection are gems and make this book worthwhile despite its age (planning and estimation papers).

One final note - the layout and design of this book could be greatly improved. Despite the age and some of the shortcomings I noted this is still a worthwhile resource for software engineering professionals who are working in a CMM Level 2 or above organization.

Software-Agents and Liberal Order: An Inquiry along the Borderline between Economics and Computer Science
Published in Paperback by Dissertation.com (January, 2001)
Author: Dirk Nicolas Wagner
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

A Poylcentral Social Order for Machines?
As a consequence of scientific specialisation economists tend to know quite little about computer science, and very often IT specialists are igoramuses of sorts in economics. Wagner's study tries successfully to bridge the gap between computer science and modern constitutional and institutional economics. Relying on Nobel-Prize Winner Hayek's seminal work on liberal and selforganizing social order the author gives a very accessible introduction into the prerequisits, principles and achievments of an order, that will most probably be of the greatest importance for the further development of IT: a liberal order of a society of free software-agents serving free human actors.

The Only Reference for Crystal Enterprise
I purchased this reference as soon as I could fit it into my budget. There are no references written for Crystal Decisions enterprise level products and I was excited to see one in the works.

I purchased the book for it's attempt to describe the features of the products and how they are designed to work together, from the Crystal Enterprise components to Crystal Analysis Pro. Probably a full 25% of the book is spent on customizing Crystal Enterprise for a web site or web application. The explanations are easy to understand and cover the major points necessary to make the product work.

I am not a big fan of the "Special Edition" book series because I find them to be too general. This one fits the content style of the series to a 'T'. If you need a general reference on the Crystal Enerprise/Crystal Analysis Pro products, by all means, by this book. If you have been "knee-deep" in the product since it's release, you will probably not find any grand revelations here. It succeeds at trying to be what it is: a solid, general product reference.

Also, it is written by Crystal Decisions employees and certified trainers/consultants so you will not be told about any bugs or shortcomings in the product.

I gave it four stars just for the breadth of content and since it is the only reference for Crystal Enterprise, you can honestly say it is the best. To me, it is worth the money spent.

Spss 10.0 Syntax Reference Guide
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (23 November, 1999)
Author: Spss
Amazon base price: $64.00
Used price: $35.68

a must have reference
While nearly all SPSS versions now have pull-down windows, there are many times where you don't want to use the defaults and want to modify the pull-down options. This book includes syntax for all commands in SPSS Base for use on statistical procedures. There is an introduction that explains some of the common commands and then a comprehensive user's manual for the language alphabetized by main commands. There is also a subject index and a keyword index that is very helpful. While the examples in the book leave something to be desired, the book takes some of the fear out of creating syntax for novices. It is a much needed companion for students and experts alike. This book can be used with most SPSS versions.

Start Your Business: A Beginner's Guide

Amazon base price: $24.95

If You Need A Start For A Small Business-Here It Is
This is more of a small business start-up tool, a must have for small business beginners. It is packed full of checklists and doesn't bore you with lots of mumble. It gets down to the nitty-gritty and then some. The only thing missing was informative examples which I do value in some cases but, I highly recommend for anyone trying to venture out into being your own boss.
