Made a big difference in my business!
This book describes how videoconferencing is changing the world. It's really interesting, because the author shows lots of real-world uses for the technology and what works and what doesn't. The book shows how all kinds of companies in lots of different fields are implementing this communication tool. The book is the only one around that traces the history of the technology back to the late 1920's when television was invented. Also, the book is an easy read. Rosen writes really conversationally and includes lots of experiences and quotes from videoconferencing users. A must-read for anybody interested in communicating more effectively!

Planning and Scheduling Using Microsoft Project 2000

Harris Makes it Clear & Easy
Paul Harris takes a pragmatic writing approach to explain how to use MS-Project. His book "Planning & Scheduling Using Microsoft Project 2000" can be used as a reference manual, as a learn-it-on-your-own guide, and as an instructor-led training book. He has Americanized the text and all workshop exercises (although I liked the Australian flavor in his prior books on SureTrak and P3).

PSUMP2000 is an extensive work. Packed with oodles of "how-to"s, tips, and warnings, Harris explains the basic and intermediate functions of using MSP, covers a majority of the functions that are available, and adds complexity gradually as the users work their way through the book's 27 detailed chapters of content and reference information. He takes some pretty complicated topics like "how duration, work, resources, and units trade-off with each other" and makes it seem like anybody can learn to use the software. In following of Microsoft's typical style, the software has many different ways to reach a single result. Harris does a good job of pointing these various approaches out to the reader.

One of the nice things about Harris books is that they are functionally organized, not by menu item. So, if you are using the book as a reference manual or help guide, it's easy to find a particular topic since you don't have to know what menu it's called up from-you just need to know the subject that you are looking for. He also provides a list of menus and related sub-menus at the beginning of most chapters for people who cannot remember how to find a particular function.

Admittedly, he did not cover every possible subject on the software or the book would be too voluminous. Intended a basic and intermediate guide on the software, the subjects of inserting hyperlinks, drawings, and workgroups; use of Microsoft's Project Central; resource leveling; Visual Basic macros; how to utilize the customizable fields; and the linking of multiple projects are not covered, but these could be addressed in a future Advanced Features supplementary volume at a later date. An appendix with a Glossary of Terms would be a nice addition. The MSP2000 software package, however, provides a decent glossary.

Having used his books for several years as training manuals for my scheduling classes, I see how effective the workshop exercises are in giving students an opportunity to practice the lessons taught by the immediately preceding text-the only way to really learn complicated software applications. The solutions to the problems may be downloaded at no cost from The Eastwood Harris website.

Excellent
I had quite a lot of difficulty trying to buy this book as I live in Great Britain, but once I received it I found it to be excellent.

It includes basic to advanced spreadsheets and is non computer software specific which is excellent as these exercises are adaptable for any software used. As an IT Lecturer I found the book to be an excellent asset to my teaching.

My only problem is that I understand there is a Tutors Manual which accompanies the book, unfortunately I am unable to obtain this book and would like any suggestions on how and where to obtain it.

Great Book! Excellent! In my opinion it is a shame that it is not easily obtainable.

Easy to Understand Economics??
You're absolutely correct!! I was a student of Prof. Gottheil the first year he released this book. The teachings of the book make Macro-Economics both easy to understand and enjoyable. I've recommended this book to both undergrads and MBA students alike, and have not received a single complaints (but have received much praise).

Excellent Beginner's Guide
Project Management Jump Start is the best introduction to project management that I've seen. Easy to follow, conversational tone, thorough coverage of project planning, and ample examples and forms that can quickly be put to good use. I wish this book was around when I was just getting started!

As an author and project management professional, if I wrote a book like this it's what I would have written. I highly recommend this to new project managers, and project managers that are trying to explain to non-PM's what it is all about.

Explains Quicken in clear, easy-to-follow terms
{Pardon my 5-star immodesty. I am the author of this book and Amazon requires me to rate my book when I submit this review.)

Financial counselors agree that keeping good, accurate records is the first step toward financial security. In order to make sound financial decisions, you must be conscientious of your spending habits and know how much income you really have. How can you save for a down payment on a house if you don't know how much you are capable of saving? How can you tell if your investments are doing well if you don't track them carefully?

This book makes it very, very easy to track your finances with Quicken. After you have read it and started using the techniques described here, you will know what your net worth is, how much you spend in different areas, what your investments (if you have any) are worth, and how much in taxes you will owe next year. You will know how to generate reports and graphs that describe in clear terms what your spending habits are, plan for retirement, compare mortgages and loans, and analyze different types of investments.

This book is for people who want to get up to speed with Quicken in a hurry -- people who want to explore Quicken's many excellent features without spending a lot of time doing it. In this book, I don't describe how to use Quicken -- I explain how Quicken serve your and your financial goals.

Humble, realistic and valuable advice from design experts
The first line of the book puts forth a wonderful and accurate tone for the text. "The two most common elements in the universe are hydrogen and stupidity." There are two main threads in the book, stupid programming tricks and strategies for effective teaching. By their definition, a stupid programming trick is a design tactic that appears to be a stroke of genius when first used and then after circumstances evolve, turns out to have been negative, sometimes even a disaster. Effective teaching is more an art than a science, and the second section deals with some of the mindset fundamentals necessary to do it well.
The material was gleaned from an invitation-only web discussion group called SHAPE. In the introduction, 38 contributors are listed, and they provide the reservoir of wisdom necessary for the winnowing and pruning of the best ideas. The advice in the book is some of the best that I have ever read. There is none of the egotistical posturing that pervades so many of the online forums, the contributors are genuinely humble and realistic. I found them refreshing, entertaining and likable.
The chapter titles are descriptive content headers and they are as follows:

1) Tricks That Ignore Those Who Come After.
2) Tricks That Destroy Portability.
3) Stupid Design Tricks.
4) Stupid Design Document Tricks.
5) Tricks Arising From Social Inadequacy.
6) Experts And Gurus As Leaders.
7) The Leader As Learner.
8) The Expert As Teacher.
9) The Courage To Teach In Any Direction.
10) The Courage To Be Yourself.

So many technical books contain quality information, but the style of presentation is dense to the point of mind lock or something like a pot of dishwater containing gold nuggets. The good stuff is present, you just have to dig around to find it. This book is neither, the lightness of the prose and the candor of the participants makes it entertaining, and the quality of the advice makes it valuable. When designing software, we all step in it from time to time, and if you read this book you can reduce the frequency of that happening to you.
