Where was this Book 5 Years Ago?
Your book definitely saved me a LOT of work preparing to teach my QuickBooks classes. I found the exercises to be just the right length for what I'm doing. The good news is that I learned a thing or two from the book myself!

Java for Business: Using Java to Win Customers, Cut Costs, and Drive Growth
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (09 June, 1997)
Author: Thomas Anderson
Amazon base price: $27.95
Used price: $2.23
A sort of In Search of Excellence for the Java crowd, Java for Business details how 15 companies have embraced Java technology in efforts to make themselves more efficient. Case studies range from how CSX Transportation uses Java applets to enable customers to track rail shipments to the new software-delivery system of the Castanet team at Marimba. Each case study reveals the thinking and general system architectures of Java's early adopters. An employee within each company writes the case study and explains the specific need for a networked commercial application in his or her organization. The case studies then go on to show, in general terms, how Java helped solve each problem, highlighting Java's shortcomings as well as its strong points.

This book isn't about details. You won't find code listings here, or even the sorts of software engineering discussions that would help a developer implement solutions. Rather, Anderson wants to get you thinking about general ways you can solve problems with Java programs. This is a fine book for managers, but programmers should look elsewhere.

Required Reading for the Java-Curious
If you're looking for examples of Java in the real world, this is the book for you. This book hits the mark with a case-study approach to describing Java's practical uses. There's little Java hype, which is refreshing. The reader gets a sense of the possibilities of the new language and the system development paradigm that goes along with it

Very informative
If you use JMP and need something to fill in the statistical details omitted in the user manuals, then this is the book for you.

I have used JMP for a while, and with a basic knowledge of statistics it is a useful tool. It got to the stage where I knew that JMP was capable of doing alot more analysis than my limited knowledge of statistics would let me understand. I could get the software to carry out all manner of analyses, I just didn't always understand what the output was telling me. The book "JMP Start Statistics" starts right at the beginning and takes you all the way through to things such as multiple regression, design of experiments and statistical quality control, all the while explaining the statistics in a clear and concise manner. This book will definitely help you get more out of JMP than just the manuals, which tend to assume you already have a statistics background, would.

Money Management for Kids
If you are looking to have devotions at home, but do not know where to begin, stop looking. This book and the entire series are excellent. They teach biblical values through hands on expereince. As a pastor of a church, I am recommending this series to all members who have children. You do not need to know theology or know how to teach, just have a desire to set aside time one night per week and enjoy time teaching, learning and growing with your kids in a Christ centered fun way.

Excellent Resource for Complex Subject
This work, which I discovered at the local university design library (thanks to an industrious librarian - thanks go out to her), is a marvelous reference for 34 different applications which are used throughout the graphics design world.

As a business person and, perhaps not professional but certainly more than an amateur, graphics designer, one who is more than familiar with many of the applications discussed, I still found the selection of logos and the author's choice to tie them to SPECIFIC features within the applications presented (such as Photoshop filters), to be invaluable. Indeed, thanks to this work, I have discovered there are some filters in software I currently own that I have never discovered but will now,of a certainty, use.

Perhaps more advanced than an introductory book, for the filters and effects are listed with actual logo art examples of their application but not the various settings to achieve the precise effect presented (which would be an impossible task - we each must play with them to learn their nuances), the work would, I think, be equally invaluable for those trying to decide which of these very expensive software packages to buy.

I wish I had owned it before I spent thousands of dollars on software unsuited to my needs.

Well worth the price..

Top-notch advice on planning a successful software project
In 'Managing Software Quality and Business Risk' Martyn Ould travels further down the road on which he set out in his excellent 1990 book, 'Strategies for Software Engineering'. His basic premise then, and here, is that successful and achievable plans for software development must be based on both the assessment of risk and the achievement of quality - and the activities that flow from addressing these two concerns. The author has advice for us both as managers and engineers in this very readable book. His arguments are based on sound principles and amplified with excellent real-life anecdotes and experiences that bear out his ideas. He puts you in the driving seat and stands quietly behind you, giving you clear, well-considered, and, above all, practical advice on how to plan your software project. If you enjoyed his first book, this one is definitely for you. If you haven't yet read him, then do so now! Slightly disappointingly, the book does not set out to help you run your project. We could well do with such sensible advice here as well. How about another book, Martyn?
