A MUST for Economics majors! As an Economics major several years ago in college, I picked up the software on the recommendation of a past professor. My intention was to bone up on the basic concepts to better prepare for my pursuit of an MBA. What I found was an outstanding product that not only refreshed my memory of Economics, but taught me things I never knew before.
The difference is the product's use of mulitimedia to convey the information. Whereas I would toil over a textbook for hours during my college days, trying to comprehend a particular concept; this software illustrates the concepts using graphics, voice-overs, video, etc. that bring everything to life. Otherwise totally abstract ideas actually make sense. And it is done in such a way that the software is enjoyable to use.
I wish I would have had a tool like this while I was in college. For those studying Microeconomics, this is a tool you simply can't do without.

An Organizational Blueprint for Software Project SuccessHe provides a good functional description of the key project players in a software development organization that can easily be adapted to any size organization. He defines the key roles in a project (Project Manager, Business Architect, Product Architect, Process Architect, Team Leader, etc.) in a way that makes the need for these roles seem intuitively obvious -- after you've read it, of course.
Much of the secret to project success, according to Whitten, lies in the clear delineation of project responsibilities, in the individual acceptance of these responsibilities, and the willingness to be accountable for one's activites. Whitten provides several sample scenarios for establishing project management organizations and process control for large, medium, and small projects, as well as managing multiple projects with a single organization.
Whitten speaks as one who has managed, coached, and consulted through decades of software development projects and acquired a rather large laundry list of "what-not-to-do" in a software project. His writing style is one of frankness and honesty in appraising the right and wrong ways to manage software development projects.

Excellent, practical guide for software project mgrsWhile many elements in the text can be found in other project management texts, Essentials provides a practical roadmap typically lacking in other texts. Further, Dr. Bechtold manages to bring to the fore the critical, soft factors which make or break a project.

Excelling with Exploring Excel 2000

A remarkable book in the field of project management....Sure, it is a good reference book to have for its extensive coverage of the field. It has been a worthwhile purchase for the quotable statistics and multiple case examples of project failure alone. It is clear that Andrew Holmes is exceptionally well-read in the subject, and the voluminous chapter references to other literature on project management are valuable in their own right.
What makes the case to read this book irresistible, however, are the insights. Some of the chapter headings make the point -"Business and IT: they just can't communicate"; "Over-commitment...when failure is the only option; "Eliminating the culture-gap". The text has scores of refreshing views. Andrew avoids, indeed scorns, the temptation to produce yet another single-ingredient recipe for project success.
If, as I do, you like to collect and use quotations to liven-up your communication, this book is another useful source. Every chapter begins with one or more stimulating extracts. For example, on optimizing delivery: "Software problems are not natural disasters like earthquakes or tornadoes in which human actions are more or less inconsequential. In fact, software disaters are entirely man-made, and we also have the ability to prevent them from occurring if we choose to do so" (Capers-Jones).
Most of the observations and ideas in the book are original and complex, but the text style is lively and readable and there is a novel diagram and illustration on almost every other page.
I can't speak highly enough of this book as a splash of colour in the otherwise rather worthy field of analysis of project failure.

Great book!

Excellent book, buggy softwareBe careful with the software, though. There are quite a few mistakes in the data sources, so that often assets don't add up to liabilities + equity. Also, there are a number of bugs in the underlying software, so that the calculations should always be double checked.
Great software for finanical analysis!
