Ideal reading for anyone designing a quality school
Jane Kern presented a realistic, detailed picture of the challenges she faced when creating a quality school. The detailed events, hurdles, outcomes, and fellowship bonds allow the reader to actualize her experiences. A must read for educators creating a charter, magnet or private school. As the founding principal of MAST Academy, a USDOE Blue Ribbon School of Excellence,I related to the passion, energy, conviction, anddetermination Jane demonstrated in the school'sevolving years. The leadership, competency, fellowship, and pride among the faculty, parents, students and administration helped create a fabulous school. Well done!

Read this and you will want your child to go to Seacrest!
An open, heartfelt look at a school, from beginning to present. Jane held nothing back - she wrote her feelings, her inspirations and most importantly, about the issues and accomplishments that make Seacrest Country Day School what it is today. My kids are going to read this so they, too, can truly appreciate the efforts and caring that have made their school so unique and special. A truly wonderful book written with love and dedication by a special lady about her incredible journey.

A fresh approach to the crisis in education.
Dr. Kern, her students and their parents have developed a solution to the impasse currently plaguing education. How does one strike a balance between the cookie cutter method of teaching and methods allowing children more freedom of choice in devloping their interests? Hers is a fresh approach and the results speak for themselves. Anyone interested in bettering our schools should read this book.

Real Life Guide to Starting Your Career: Get the Right Job Right Now! (Real Life Guide)

The cap and gown have had their day in the sun and the honors-winning thesis is already yellowing at the edges. You're a college graduate now, and it's time to decide what you're going to do to earn your keep. If you are like most recent college grads, once you start down this path, the first thing you learn is how little you actually know about finding work, no matter how swimmingly you performed in anatomy, Eastern philosophy, and calculus. What you need is a good text.

Margot Carmichael Lester's guide to careers treats you like a novice (though not like an idiot) and teaches some essential job-hunt precepts that a lot of people could do with learning or reviewing. The chapters (including "Prep Work," "Landing a Job," and "The Realities of Working") each provide a quick summary of main points, and they are worth the price of the book (CD-ROM aside!). Starting with the fact that, in 1998, 1.2 million college graduates are seeking jobs, the book deals with basic but oft-ignored truths (for instance, you need to pay your dues, because glamorous yet highly compensated jobs are rare), and it offers the advice to figure out what you enjoy, what your personality is suited to, and what skills you need to update to improve your marketability.

With a CD-ROM that comes packed to the gills with software extras and online connection resources, as well as an easily navigable version of the book, the usefulness of the Real Life Guide is tripled. Even if all you ever do is integrate the lessons of chapter 1, you'll be far ahead of the pack of job-seekers who're vying for the positions you want. --Stephanie Gold

A book for who wants to get a good job
Lester used humor and orgainzed writing metholodgy to teach you how to start your career. She acted as a mother to give you much advice on evaluating yourself and employer, writing resume, preparing interview and following up; but I sure your mother never told you these.

searching for the right job? buy this book, problem solved!
I spent six weeks looking for a job before I bought this book, and one week looking after I read it. Great strategy, easy to read. Helped me get my current job.

Everything I DIDN'T learn in college
I recently bought Real Life Guide to Life After College to learn how to write my resume. This book includes software to build a paper resume and an online one also. I graduate next month and already have tons of interviews set up thanks to the tips in this book. Although I haven't yet read them, there are sections in here on managing your money and the Internet too.

The best Marketing Guide I have seen.
As the National Director of Marketing for my firm, I read and use many different marketing books, manuals and reports. However, Marketing Plans, by Malcolm H.B. McDonald is the most complete guide I have found for actually designing a comprehensive and effective business plan. The layout of the book makes it useful to the novice as well as the experienced Marketing professional. The information is stated clearly, completely and effectively. In fact, I was so impressed, that I have totally redesigned our corporate marketing and branding plans using the information from this book as the basis for that design. Thanks for all the help Mr. McDonald!!!

Super!
McDonald also wrote Key Account Management (more for salespeople) and co-wrote a smaller, but more difficult book called Marketing Plans the Work. This one (Marketing Plans: How to Write them, How to Use them) is more of a text book, which normally I think would make it more "dry" but in this case it's just the opposite: packed with information, useful exercises and a clear step-by-step approach to writing a real marketing plan. Academically sound but not "academic." Plus it can help you and your company get more of a marketing orientation, or at least understand what a "marketing orientation" is all about.

The Source Book
Just bought my third copy... i give one away every year to a struggling marketeer. If you buy only one book on marketing, make it this one.

opened my eyes
I didn't even know what the heck "entrepreneurship" meant before I read this book. It's kind of a long word and I don't have a very good, like, vocabulary. Geez, I even had to look at the title to see how to spell it here.

See, I didn't learn how to read until I was about 10 years old. I was always the "dumb one", you know? So as soon as I could muster up the courage, I skeedadled to South Carolina because I "fit in" here. The real reason I even bought this book is because when somebody saw me carrying it around, they knew that I had got some learnin. It's a big book, and if you want to impress your co-workers, I highly suggest that you carry it around with you and throw around the word, "entrepreurship" a lot. So as you can tell, this is a good book to buy. The end.

One Entrepreneurial Book About Entrepreneurship
When I first sat down to read this book, I was pretty sure I would fall asleep within seconds of starting it. How do I know this: I always fall asleep when I read books about entrepreneurship and I also have a case of narcolepsy. This being said; I was pleasantly suprised that I read it cover to cover in just one setting. I was like "Dizang" (Of course, I speak facetiously. I actually said "Wow".) There is so much about the field of entrepreneurship that I did not know. Who knew SME stood for "small and moderate sized enterprises". Let me tell you, I do now. Little nuggets of wisdom such as this one await to be mined from this book with ease and without the use of nitro, pick axe, or migrant workers.

The only bad portion of the book was that there was no article concerning the term "entrepreneurship". I think it would have been nice to have seen the orgins of the word and how it relates to the current state of the field. I would also like to see why no entrepreneur has entrepreneured a short word for entrepreneurship. I think there is money to made in this field for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit. Let us face it the word is just to long to use that often. I make the following suggestions: money-makership, bill-bankership, and ching-chingship.

I agree with all the statements of Colonel Alan about the quality of this book. Che Sara, Sara. Viva Entrepreneurship.

A utterly delightful handbook
I have been making excessive use of "The Blackwell Handbook of Entrepreneurship" of late. I have to say, this is the finest handbook of entrepreneurship I have ever come across. I am a consummate student of entrepreneurship and I have often grappled with the trouble of carrying four, five, sometimes even ten books on the subject with me at one time. My back was aching and my arms were tired. Now that I have discovered "The Blackwell Handbook of Entrepreneurship", this is no longer a problem - all the entrepreneurship I need in one convenient package! Marvelous!

They are all here: Dennis De's "SME Policy in Europe", Barley and Stockley's "Entrepreneurial Teams and Venture Growth" , Bengt Johannisson's "Networking and Entrepreneurial Growth", and of course the all time favorite, "Conceptual and Empirical Challenges in the Study of Firm Growth" by Per Davidsson and Johan Wiklund! In other words, all the modern classics that the modern innovator needs.

Because I feel so strongly about "The Blackwell Handbook of Entrepreneurship", I wish to lend it my strongest endorsement. It has proved to be a tremendous help for me in my research. Kudos! Bravo! Good Show! Amore! Hooray! Right On! Je Temme! Yo La Tengo! Encore!

Making Economic Sense

Rothbard Makes Sense
From 1982 to his death in 1995, Murray Rothbard wrote a monthly column for the Ludwig von Mises Institute's newsletter, The Free Market. In these columns - which are collected here - Rothbard commented on the economic affairs and policies of the day. While these pieces generally use certain current events as the starting point, Rothbard used these events as a springboard to discuss Austrian economics. Taken as a whole, they provide an excellent introduction to economics from the Austrian school.

This book also contains a few unpublished pieces. The best is Rothbard's analysis of the 1994 elections. As usual, Rothbard gets to the crux of the issues involved, dealing with the characters whose actions (often behind the scenes) were decisive. Reading this piece reminded me of how much we lost in Murray's death - not just a brilliant theoretician, but a man whose comments on the events of the day were a constant source of illumination. Make sure you also get THE IRREPRESABLE ROTHBARD, his collection of essays from the Rothbard-Rockwell report.

A great collection Rothbard's shorter essays
I liked this book because it tries to fill in the gap in the free-market literature of today. I find too many free-market many books on general topics like taxes, education, antitrust, money, and economics in general. However, I like to see real-world opinions of a noted libertarian on topics of the day. This collection is just that. Here, I can see how Rothbard applied his fundamental beliefs and knowledge to the contemporary news stories. The essays range from 1982 to 1995. I can compare his views with views of other commentators, both leftists and conservatives. It's too sad he did not live through all the Clinton years, I'm sure he'd have had much to say. I learned much from these short essays because they _are_ short and to the point.

Rothbard's legacy: a fine posthumous collection
Murray Newton Rothbard tragically ceased to be "the State's greatest _living_ enemy" when he died in 1995. But his thought lives on in this posthumous collection, mostly drawn from his monthly essays for _The Free Market_ between 1982 and 1995. These essays cover a wide range of topics, from the welfare state to Clintonomics to fiat money to U.S. intervention in the Middle East -- and Rothbard is uniformly sharp, clear, incisive, and witty wherever he turns his pen. This collection should also be of interest to those of Rothbard's readers who have heard that he somehow changed his views near the end of his life; the fact is that Rothbard was as strongly laissez-faire and libertarian in his later years as he had ever been. Some of his readers had simply failed to recognize that the earlier Rothbard was not at all "libertine" but socially quite conservative; they were therefore surprised that he found anything good to say about Pat Buchanan (as he does here, several times) or against allowing illegal aliens to have access to the vast machinery of the welfare state (as in a passage regarding California's Prop. 187 in the book's final essay, a previously unpublished commentary on the November 1994 elections). As the essays in this volume make clear, it was those readers, not Rothbard, who were guilty of inconsistency. Rothbard was uncompromisingly and consistently devoted to liberty throughout his entire career; he simply did not, as some of his readers have done, confuse antifederalism with moral nihilism. Also, the penultimate essay provides an overview of the history of the Ludwig von Mises Institute (Auburn, AL), of which Rothbard was Academic Vice President until his death. By the time readers reach this essay, they will be unsurprised that, when Austrian economics sprang again to life in the 1980s and 1990s, it was wearing a rumpled jacket and a bow tie.

My child loved this book!
My little girl loved this book. She has always adored teddy bears and now collects them. This summer we plan to take her to The Vermont Teddy Bear Company. She brought this book in for show and tell along with her favorite bear, and gave a short presentation on how teddy bears are made. I would certainly recommend this book.

Teddy bears are great!
This book is an excellent tutorial in how teddy bears are made and how great the VT teddy bear company is! I never wanted a teddy bear until I read this book. I live in VT and I am excited about going to the Vt Teddy bear company factory and purchasing my own teddy bear!

BEHIND THE SCENES AT VERMONT TEDDY BEAR FACTORY
An exciting, behind-the-scenes tour through the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory, where you can see step-by-step how teddy bears are made. Great full-color photos show you how the cloth is cut, how each bear is filled and sewn, and how their many outfits are created. Special sidebars on the company's history and other topics add additional fun background.

Winnie-The -Pooh's Teatime Cookbook
This is the most charming and delightful little recipe book I've ever bought! I needed cookbooks representing cultures from around the world for a senior high school Multicultural Studies class that I teach and thought it would be fun to include English teatime snacks. I got this book and decided to keep it for myself. The recipes are fun and easy. Try the honeycake and scones for breakfast or snack-time. I recommend this for children and adults.

Delightful Book with Tasty Recipes
I love to cook and where I work we have a yearly Tea Party in which we donate the proceeds to a local charity. I have used several of the recipes in this book and have only received rave reviews. The illustrations and poems are an extra delight. I highly recommend this book.

A cute collection of recipies!
THis book was a good selection of recipies revolving around the origonal pooh books. Tho they were not origonaly from Winnie the Pooh or the House at pooh Corner or the Two Books of Poems that A. A. Milne wrote about this silly old bear, they were collected carefuly to surround the stories. These books are smaller in content but very compriable to the (3) three books by V. H. Ellison with recipies in them about Pooh and his friends. THey are diffrent recipies and very taty at that!

Fairy Tales

Berlie Doherty, author of many books for young people, including Carnegie Medal-winner Dear Nobody, says fairy tales "are enchanted dreams. We remember them as if they had been sung to us while we were under the spell of a long deep sleep." And according to acclaimed picture-book illustrator Jane Ray, "fairy tales are the earth beneath our feet, giving us roots and helping us find our place in the world, but they also offer a glimpse of the magical and the enchanted." With two such eloquently mystical creators at the helm, any collection of fairy tales is bound to be magical. Sure enough, this team's magnificent Fairy Tales glimmers and shines, giving new life to traditional favorites such as "Beauty and the Beast," "Cinderella," "Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp," and "Hansel and Gretel." Doherty's retellings are respectful of the originals, while incorporating her own strong, vibrant voice. Ray's watercolor, ink, and collage illustrations, surrounding the gold-framed text, are truly stunning, in exotic colors and exquisite tapestry-style patterns. Characters seem to come from all parts of the world--appropriately enough, since the stories have "echoes in many different cultures." The Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Charles Perrault would be proud. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Twelve Classic FairyTales That Shine Like New
This is a physically beautiful volume, medium sized and easy to hold while you have your arm around another person. The illustrations are unique and creative and accented with gold which adds to the magical ambiance. The pages have colorful decorated borders and the interesting use of silhouettes is striking. The text is true to the original tales while being melodious, fresh and inviting. Don't miss the enchanting picture of Cinderella that goes with this text, "She heard a fluttering as if all the leaves were unfurling at once, and the birds of the tree flew down carrying a silver dress and slippers that glittered like stars." Now isn't that a little better than Bibbity Bobbity Boo?

A Unique Treasure
The artwork initially caught my eye with this book. Jane Ray's enchanting combination of watercolor, ink, and collage drew me in completely. The design is reminiscent of a beloved scrapbook, and it is truly beautiful. Text blocks and illustrations are bordered with gold accents, creating the illusion that they have been "mounted" on their exquisitely designed backgrounds. The colors are rich and the images range from simple silhouettes to intricately detailed landscapes and portraits.

Ray adds to the book's charm with her multicultural representations of characters. In addition to traditional (Caucasian) depictions, readers encounter a Black "Beauty," a Chinese "Aladdin," a Moroccan sorcerer, a henna-tattooed Indian princess, and a variety of other diverse characters. While the stories all hail from Western Europe, the illustrations and character portrayals add an element of multiculturalism and diversity.

Although many of the story titles are familiar, they are by no means ordinary or generic. Berlie Doherty has traced them back to their roots in order to maintain the original "essence" of the classic tales she has chosen. In a generation where many fairy tale classics have been altered and homogenized by the entertainment industry, Doherty's return to the original versions is both refreshing and pleasantly nostalgic. Fairy tale novices and veterans alike will be enchanted and intrigued.

This book has quickly become a valued treasure in my collection for its unique appeal and beauty. The text is candid and honest, incorporating elements of humor, sadness, joy, and more while still maintaining the original "magic" of the tales. A great book for yourself or as a gift - I highly recommend it!

Absolutely Gorgeous
As a longtime lover of Fairy tales, I've gotten rather picky about which picture book versions I pick up. And I wanted to buy this book the first time I flicked through it.

This one includes a variety of stories, all well known, from the obvious choices, like Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, to Aladdin, and the Wild Swans. The stories are told well, though without any newness - these are familiar, comfortable stories.

Ah, but it wasn't the tellings of the stories which had me sold on this book. Jane Ray's illustrations are utterly beautiful. Normally, I am a fan of neo-renaissance illustrations - almost realistic, almost three dimensional, and full of elegant landscapes (See Kinuko Craft's work) The illustrations in this book are flat, far more stylized - but they're full of movement and feeling, and they look like they came from the best of medieval manuscripts. The touches of metallic gold only add to this impression. The full colour full page illustrations are also complemented by silhouette illustrations and border images along many other pages. This is inspired art, lovely to look on, and perfectly matches the feeling of fairy tale stories.

Reckless Disregard
I happen to know the grandparents (both sets) of one of the students killed in this crash. The book has a big impact on me, not only for the tragedy itself, but that it has a personal meaning also. I had a hardcopy of this book in the library in which I worked and now I want my own copy.

Best Book I EVER read
This book was fascinating from the first page until the last. Mr.Kunen has a way with words that will grip the reader as he did me. The intimate details of the crash and the lives of the young victims will bring a tear to your eye. And how Ford Motors was defeated in the end will have you cheering in a bittersweet way. A masterpiece. I have read hundreds of books and this book tops my list to this day even though I first read it 6 years ago.

Excellent
My math teacher was on the bus when it crashed and allowed me to read one of his two copies of this book, 3 of his friends were killed and if it was n't for his other friend he would have died too for he was sitting 3 rows from the front and saw the youth director get blown up when the explosion occured.
