In her research, Miller has called upon diaries, contemporaneous journalistic accounts and public records, seeming to have left no scrap of historical cloth on the floor. Her careful attention to detail is as remarkable as it is welcome. For all this, the narrative is paced quickly and efficiently, and the result might have been fashioned--miraculously--from a single piece of cloth. Miller's vivid prose brings to life us an important and much-overlooked chapter in American history.

First of all, I didn't want to pay a lot of money for a used book. I was pleasantly relieved to learn that the price of the book was fair and when it arrived at my home and I examined it there were no markings on the pages and I found the book to be in excellent condition. In the future, I would purchase other text books from Amazon.

Great for anyone starting to think "clinically" or in a PBL (problem based learning) program

I obtained my first copy of this book from Dr. Beck in 1987. It helped me learn neuro-ophthalmology as a resident and remains an excellent reference today. A few years ago I searched for a 2nd copy for my satellite office, but discovered it was no longer in print. I was very pleased to find a used copy at amazon.com recently. I reach for it often as I see patients in my general ophthalmology practice. It is the best (neuro-oph.) book I have found for directing my differential diagnosis and work-up. If you can get a copy, I encourage you to.

This wonderful book is an autobiography of Canadian entrepreneur Peter Thomas. He was essentially a Canadian version of Donald Trump. He has a very entertaining writing style and describes his personal and professional escapades throughout his life from early childhood to his retirement at age 50 in the late 1980s. The underlying theme throughout the book is Peter Thomas revealing the aspects of his character (Attitude, Motivation, Commitment) which contributed to his natural success as an entrepreneur.

Even if you the reader are not an entrepreneur, this book will surely provide an entertaining read if nothing else. However for those readers who feel the entrepreneurial spirit within them, this book provides a great candid look into how a single individual can grow up in a relatively poor childhood, yet finish their life as a millionaire. A well written rags to riches story.

"Never Have Red Wine Under the Chupah" is a no-nonsense, absolutely essential guide to everything a Jewish bride (or groom) needs to know and do before the wedding ceremony. From the selection of the caterer to the placement of the tables to the size of the dance floor, Gail Mendeles Hay uses both horror stories and successes to illustrate her many points. At the same time, the book is an enjoyable read, even for those of us who have already made our own mistakes on the way to the wedding canopy.

As Ms. Hay points out throughout the book, while the primary focus is on weddings, many of the points are equally valid for other types of catered affairs such as a bar mitzvah. If you are planning an affair, or know someone who is, buy this book!...

A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO THINKS AMERICA IS GONE TO HELL IN A HANDBASKET AND WOULD LIKE TO RUN AWAY TO AN IDYLLIC SOUTH PACIFIC ISLAND LIKE THE AUTHOR. BASSO PAINTS INCREDIBLY FUNNY WORD PICTURES OF HYSTERICAL ENCOUNTERS WITH THE COLORFUL INHABITANTS OF BEAUTIFUL MOLOKAI, EACH ONE OF WHOM AFFIRMS THHE KIND OF HOPE WE ALL NEED IN THIS NEW UPSIDE DOWN WORLD. EACH CHAPTER IS A GEM, SOMETIMES PROFOUND, SOMETIMES JUST PLAIN FUNNY BUT ALWAYS INSTRUCTIVE NEVER PREACHY. BASSO HAS CAPTURED THE SPIRIT OF ALL OF US OVERSTRESSED, "WHATDAHELL IS GOING ON " OVER FIFTY CROWD LOOKING TO REGAIN THAT ELUSIVE BALANCE IN OUR LIVES. I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN, VERY INSPIRATIONAL. WOULD MAKE A GREAT MOVIE WITH STEVE MARTIN IN THE LEAD.

If you are a Porter Fan...read this book. The story is good, the writing is good. Sometimes the older books, even "popular fiction" are the best. Would recommend this addition to anyones library.

In the book The new accountability: High schools and high-stakes testing, editors Martin Carnoy, Richard Elmore, and Leslie Santee Siskin present a series of essays that describe the impact of contemporary education reform efforts on high school operations and outcomes. Chapter authors describe qualitative and quantitative data drawn from fifteen high schools in four states that explore how schools' internal accountability operations meet the demands of externally imposed accountability requirements.
