Easing the "Pain of Learning"

"...the pain of learning this vast...behemoth is its own reward" to quote Deke. I found that following along while Deke explains both basic and complex tasks did indeed "ease the pain of learning" as he promised. Over the years I have purchased numerous books on Photoshop. Although I agree with some critics who say that all of the experts tend to repeat themselves, I feel that this repetition is absolutely essential to learning and retaining what it takes to master Photoshop. Both novice and expert will find tips and tricks in this book that will enhance their images and their enjoyment of using this complex program. Thank you Deke!

Excellent Course Book for People at All Skill Levels

I have used this book as a Photoshop text book for two years in a 3 month Multimedia Specialist Vocational Course I teach. Students come into my course at many skill levels, ranging from new with no experience to graphic professionals with over 25 years experience.

I have often heard from students "If I had only known that before!" and then an explanation of how much time one of Deke's tips would have saved them on some past project.

The introductory videos to each lesson are packed with useful information. The practical exercises are fun and inspiring as well as aimed at users from all skill levels. The explanations are clear, concise and well thought-out. Deke's humor helps to keep things from being overwhelming.

I strongly recommend this book from an author who knows Photoshop inside out for anyone who wants to learn Photoshop. Introducing my students to this book is one of the best things I do for them.

I have had college classes in photoshop. I could say that I have forgotten more about photoshop than most people know. Unfortunatly this means I have forgotten almost all that I knew. I found myself a beginning student at a new version of photoshop. This is a good book to sit down and go through the exercises. Good combination of video lectures and workbook exercises. I have just finished chapter six out of twelve this morning. You can not work your way through this book without coming away with a solid base in photoshop. After making it half way through this book, I am able to do things that I had no clue were even possible.

I am a newby here. I ordered different books to learn CS2, and this book is amazing. I don't have anything original to add to all the excellent comments people already wrote, I just felt compelled to give it its five starts. The book is clear, well organized, easy to follow, and gives you a pretty good understanding of every single topic. It's not just do this and this, like a recipe. This was the book I was looking for!

I have sophisticated stereo equipment from Denon, JBL, B&W and Bose, as well as a nice computer. I'm certainly not bragging so why would I mention all of that? Because none of them can even play this thing. This is an MP3 CD. That's all fine; I have burned my own MP3 CDs and made DVDs on my computer. So then, why wouldn't this one play? I don't know, but I can't recommend this to anyone else in good conscience. And really, I on;y gave it one star because Amazon required me to select at least one. I haven't even been able to listen to this thing.

This book was very disappointing for me.

After reading some Amazon's reviews about Internet Riches, I decided to purchase it. I don't know why, but most of them say great things about this book.

To sum up the "secret" content...

1. You don't need a lot of money to start your internet business.

2. There are 3 types of e-businesses: service, product and niche ones.

3. Some very basic content about finding a domain, a web host, and a designer.

4. And finally the book says you should use e-mail marketing and AdWords pay-per-click.

That's it. Those are the "money-making secrets of online millionares". Wow, huh.

If you've read anything about making money online you should already know those things. There's much better material online on blogs and on free pdf reports. Save your money for something else.

I know people will say "oh, but that's a book for beginners". Alright, but even if you haven't read anything about online businesses before, there are definitely LOTS of better products for beginners out there.

Must read if you want to be in this business

I bought the book based on other good reviews. I will be honest and say that I thought the title and the cover reflected some kind of gimmick, get rich quick scheme. Overall I felt I got value out of the book, which is important. It is not a book for who is already in business, but it outlines principles and starter ideas. My expectations were low for this book, but I took more than a few pointers and will consult it in the future again.

Nothing new here

I was hoping this book would provide some insight on the business side of how to start an Internet based business. It didn't take long to realize this is not the case. More then half the book seems to cover setting up a web site, and a very basic site at that. Maybe some value to someone with ZERO experience with the web but for anyone who hasn't been living under a rock for the last ten years, probably not worth getting.

After graduation a friend recommended 'Stylin' with CSS' that not only added to my understanding of CSS, but also became a GREAT resource guide for me. While the book is geared toward the novice, the appendices provide a clear, concise, and organized breakdown of CSS properties along with their descriptions, values, and version compatibility, which I find very useful.

'Stylin' with CSS' gives the reader a solid understanding of many of the CSS rules that, in the beginning, baffle a designer. IDs and classes are thoroughly reviewed in a fresh style. Collapsing margins are addressed to help designers create sturdy fixed or liquid designs (both types of layouts are discussed in detail). Column length and positioning are given attention as well.

Thanks to this book, I am confident that the added insight will improve my future designs and allow me to deliver CSS-generated sites more effectively. To all the novice designers who are reading this review, go on and buy the book...you'll really be glad you did!

Stylin' with CSS: A Designer's Guide (2nd Edition) (Voices That Matter)

Last year, I led the charge of moving our software away from desktop applications towards .NET/ASP/SQL. I rented and configured virtual server space, put in a basic security and a login scheme, configured both IIS and SQL Server. Yes, it was difficult.

But not as difficult as putting together web pages that looked good and behaved well. I come from the "table" school of web design. That way, things behaved like MS Word. The trouble with that approach is that I would end up fighting with the layouts and look and feel would become somewhat industrial.

"Stylin" helped me enough last year to maintain consistency across pages by creating ASP control style sheets and ASP Master pages.

So, this year I decided to have another go at "taming the page". I also wanted to understand the relationship between CSS and AJAX.

I learned that maintainable AJAX sites absolutely require the kind of CSS design and management approaches presented by Charles. The only tables I use now are client side formatted XML/XSLT and the CSS classes do the rest. The reader must do the exercises to gain the most from this book - the knowledge gained is well worth it.

I have looked at a number of books to help me get started again in web page design. Stylin' with CSS is by far the best book Ive found. It is very readable, well-organized, and proceeds in a logical manner from some XHTML through the important aspects of CSS. The book covers, layouts, positioning, styles and a host of other topics. Many examples are presented in a clear manner. You can download examples from the author's website for even more information. Stylin' with CSS is a real winner! Highly recommended.

This is an excellent book on css. It is the best book on css that I own, and I own a several. It is well written, and does a great job of explaining nuances.

The book is also physically appealing. The pages lay flat, unlike some books that you have to hold in place, and there is room on the page to take a few notes and underscore important concepts.

CSS is deceptively difficult. It starts out easy enough, but it is full of quirks and browser incompatibilities. And small quirks can turn into big pains. This author does a great job of addressing those quirks, and he offers suggestions on avoiding the css pitfalls.

I run an online Sports Business [...]and I have used Adwords - was bad at managing it. I hired someone to run my campaigns and I didnt get any better results. Once I read this book (which I hope my competitors never read) it instantly (your saying c-mon "instantly"?) improved my results.
My Keyword Score went from on average "Good" to "Great" in minutes.

After a few weeks my CTR went up 257% my Conv Rate went up 45% my cost per converstion went down 32% and my number of versions went up 50%.

Thats in matter of two weeks from when I bought the book!!!!

Thanks Perry!!! Oh and once you buy the book and sign up on his newsletter he will send you regular check ups and little memory joggers to keep you on track.

Its not a book, Its a system.

If you want to learn Adwords and how to properly implement a sound Adwords campaign, then this is the book to start with. Then, you will not resist the temptation to buy Perry's other programs as well. In the last month I have spent about $250 on his books, clubs, etc. and have significantly saved this many times over in my ad campaigns just by learning how to do things properly.

Simply put, if you're running a business and looking to market it online, just buy this book. You'll be glad you did.

David Siegel's Secrets... is probably the only book you'll need for creating effective web projects. Good for beginners and pros! The best place I've seen for working with the entire project, small or large, not just the web site! The format of the book is exciting and sensible. The pages of the book are colorful and enticing! The language is fun and professional! I especially appreciate that there is a web site to accompany the book. The Sidebars are helpful hints and summaries, reinforcing the text and bulleting quick info.
I have highlighted, earmarked, bookmarked, circled and scribbled in this book. It's a book lover's dream and a web designer's partner! Great price here, too! Thanks for the fun learning experience in a ponderous realm, David!

This book along with "Creating Killer Websites" should be a must have for any web designer. Yes, the books are getting a little old now and date them selves in regards to discussions about technology. But the books hold up over time with their common sense approach to project managment and design theory. These books are well worth the read.

I had high hopes for this book when I started reading it. After all, David Seigel is highly regarded around Internet circles as a web design guru. Unfortunately, Siegel's graphic design background permeates his company's project management philosophy for building web sites. Basically, he advocates managing the process of building web sites like you would manage a graphic design project. Whether you agree with this or not (personally I don't), this book only contains about one-tenth of the project management depth of Steve McConnell's 'Software Project Survival Guide'.

Pretentious waste of time
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-14
... This book is aimed at graphic designers, marketing agencies and the like who put together nice marketing oriented sites, whose sole job is marketing the company. For people such as myself who implement lage scale ebusiness websites, intranets, corporate portals etc there is nothing. The concept of dynakic database driven sites isn't even mentioned.

These projects are a cross between an IT project (with all the traditional skills and techniques that implies) and a maketing project (such as a TV campaign). There are multiple wildly different and largely incompatibel skillsets at work and these have to be welded together to promoite efficiency, while not destroying the motivation and qualities of the diverse people involved.

Traditional IT managemnt skills have to blend with the world of the graphic designer and the business analyst. This book doesn't even start to cover that. An utter waste of time.

Added to this I personally find david siegel's designs immensely overrated.

None of the Photoshop Elements programs come with instructions. Good luck figuring them out. Even the company's manual (which you have to buy separately) is poorly written. This manual is pretty comprehensive, and a must-have if you ever want to master the software. However, it is not as easy to use as the "The Photoshop Elements Book for Digital Photographers" by Kelby/Kloskski (which I highly recomend). Also, be aware that these "Missing Manuals" are all basically the same, whether you buy the version 5, 6 or 7 manual. If you have one, don't waste your money buying the next one. They are all almost identicle in content. So, for example, if you own Photoshop version 6, software, you may as well buy the version 7 Missing Manual. It completely explains the software, and simply adds some stuff on the version 7 program.

This book was ok in the fact that it spent the entire book building on one real project. However, I thought the book was a tougher read than the Teach yourself Flash 5 in 24 hrs book. I guess it's really a matter of preference. I found this book to be adaquate, but not anything close to the other book. Teach yourself had a unique way of teaching you that really hammered the techniques home. I guess I didn't feel this one accomplished that.

Excellent book for all levels

First of all the authors of this book and the series of books they have written are brilliant, they have a great way of making even the most complex subjects very simplistic.

This book starts off slow and in the very basics of flash and gets quite extensive towards the end, I believe they stop right at actionscripting for which there is a whole other book (quite needed!)

I am (was) actually a Flash instructor at a college here in OC, the college provided or recommended their own book but I never used it and I told my students that purchasing that book was not necessary. I actually tought out of this book! And on the first day I told everyone they didn't have to buy it but if they did they would find it very helpful throughout the couse and later on, it's also definately a good reference book to go back to if you don't use Flash all the time and happen to forget.

Anyway needless to say every class I tought loved this book and loved learning flash. I even took some example/exercises out of the book. Everyone learned the full contents of the class and found it very fun. The illustrations and sample projects help a lot, if you are learning on your own I recommend you do them. Anyway I've had this book for years now and as a user and instructor I would say there's no other book I would turn to.

Good starting point.

This book is not a reference to flash 5.

This book goes through step by step how to make flash movies from the ground up. It assumes nothing; which is great for most beginners.

I was definitly not a beginner when i bought the book. (i got it at the time of release because it was hyped up quite a bit).

At the time i understood, and fast tracked through it to get at the good stuff to find out that it never really got any "great" stuff. Some of the examples are done very well, and are great in the tutorial sense, but i was disapointed that i didn't learn anything new. (or little).

This is flash 5. You could learn flash just as well with tutorials online at any of the bigger flash websites. If you're new to flash: this is a great start. But if you have the least bit of flash knowledge then i can see someone getting bored with this qucikly.

Bottom line:
Great place to start. Not a reference by any means. Remember its flash 5. Flash MX is out, and much more fun than flash 5.

An excellent intro to Flash!

I've been working through this book for almost a week and I love it! The writing is clear and the concepts are explained very well. The authors include hands-on tutorials for each concept, and their step-by-step instructions walk you through your first try at each new skill.

They are also very good about teaching you the keyboard shortcuts for common actions as you go along (and reminding you to use them!) Knowing the shortcuts for adding a keyframe, breaking apart a graphic, converting a graphic to a symbol etc. makes your project work go quickly and really builds your sense of competence.

At the end of each chapter you practice what you learned in that chapter by using the new skills to add on to your ongoing "case study" website.

This is one of the best tutorials on a program that I have come across and one of the few technical books I have ever read cover to cover. I have many technical books and usually end up using them for reference instead of actually working through them. If you want to gain competence in Flash in a week or two, get "Foundation Flash 5" and work your way through it. It's easy!

I wish more Programming books were as good and easy to understand. This is a must read book if you are new to ASP, both beginner and Programmer-new to ASP.

If you have problem understanding the first few chapters, go pick up Sams teach yourself ASP in 24 hours and then come back to this book.

A great learning tool for ASP beginners...

...and a great reference for the advanced programmers.

This was the first ASP book I bought when I began to learn the language two years ago. It has an excellent tutorial methodology to it which is very easy to comprehend. It is also well written by two guys that know what they're talking about! (You can visit their web site at 4guysfromrolla.com)

Even though I have since purchased several other books on the subject (hoping to expand my knowledge base), I continue to find myself referring back to this one. Granted, this book is certainly not the be-all for Active Server Pages, and I have not found one that is, however, it is by far the one to begin with and hang on to.

FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY! I definitely recommend this book!

Good for beginners; Slow and repetative for advanced

If you don't have any Visual Basic experience and/or much web development experience and you're looking for a book to get you in the door to ASP 3.0, this is the book for you. However, if you have a fuller programming background, you may find it tediously repetative and lacking in full scope coverage. For instance, there is no space given to handling XML.

On the bright side, I found it pretty easy to breeze through sections where I had familiarity.

Excellent stuff if you are a beginner.
For advanced junta, there are other hard-core books on ASP, forget this one.

Actually this book is only for beginners. If you know nothing about ASP then this one is for you. I am not sure that you will be able to do any advanced scripting with this one, but if you are a newcomer to scripting world or ASP then this is the ultimate choice.

Everything is explained in a simple manner. Starting from the basics of ASP to VBScript, Objects - Session, Server etc, File System Object and to Databases, everything is explained keeping "beginners woes" in mind.
There are lots of examples that help you to grasp the VBScript and ASP.

Must buy for a beginner.

If you want to enter ASP, then this is the first step. GO GET IT !!!.

this book is the sum of all knowlage about Web Publishing and site management. this book delves into mysteries from how to use HTML to how to get those pages to load faster and easier... and more. I use this book as a self-study reference and I have learned more than I would have had I taken a formal course on web publishing.

If you've got plenty of both to waste then buy this book. But I strongly suggest you check this title out at your local bookstore or library before spending your hard earned money. This book was outdated long ago and contains many errors. This author writes terribly. This publisher needs to employ a good editor. I suspect the raves are fallacious and a ruse. Amazon should investigate why a title that has not been on their computer best seller list for ages has so many more reviews than other more well proven titles, as allowing this nonsense to continue impeaches their credibility considerably.

Overpriced and lacking in content

This book tries to cover everything and in doing so, severely limits the amount of information that the reader needs for comprehensive coverage. The book is vastly overpriced and much more detailed information can be found in numerous less pricy books that are out on the market today. I would not recommend this book - it is a waste of money.

I wish I never bought this book!

If I could give this book a lower rating than one star, I would. I made the mistake of following the reviews on this page, so I'd like to set the record straight. To call this book a professional reference is a joke, it is padded out with chapters on using such 'professional' software as Netscape Navigator Gold and Microsoft Internet Assistants. The first and last time I opened this book was on the day it arrived 6mths ago. Any worthwhile content is surrounded by junk and makes the book completely unwieldy. If you know nothing about web publishing, you may gain an education from this book but before you finish it you too will be looking for something lighter to lift but heavier on serious content! I can't get rid of this book soon enough. Buy the HTML Sourcebook (Graham) instead - but you serious developers already know to do that anyway....
