An exhaustive reference work.

Such is the degree of detail contained within the pages of this single tome that, it could be said, the author tried to achieve far too much by including additional peripheral detail which added comparatively little more for the amount of extra effort required. Truth is, whatever the intentions and expectations when this book was being planned they can only have been surpassed.

Australia is one of those countries where much of her history (and many other things as well) tend to remain in Australia. Were it not for the internet, few items relating purely to Australia would ever reach Europe. Even when I finally discovered the existence of this splendid work, I could only obtain a copy direct from "down under." I am glad I did.

For some years now, in between other works, I have been studying the diving - especially the shipwrecks, to be found off the coast of Queensland and might easily have reached the conclusion that only one wreck (the Yongala) was ever lost there. This book explodes that myth and give the reader a complete appraisal of all ships lost, stranded and wrecked off that vast coastline that is Australia.

Commencing with an excellent explanation of the author's approach, abbreviations and even how to use the book, we soon come to an alphabetical listing of all those vessels which are included. I don't know how many ships are included altogether but there are exactly 1,000 pages of entries with anything between 15 and 20 entries per page. These are followed by another, similar, 15 pages of unidentified wrecks, Glossary, Gazetteer and Maps, Chronology, Statistics and full disclosure of all reference material.

No, this is not a book that anyone will sit down and read, it is an encyclopedia and, therefore, a vital tool for those engaged in serious reference. Yes, there are errors but only minor errors. As the book explains, there are many reasons for such anomalies - including errors on the original research material.

Altogether, this is a serious addition to the published works on Australia's maritime history and I congratulate the author on a doing a great job.

These pioneers in the Interventional Radiology have a great deal of experinces on the road then certainly it worths your money and investment.

The brutal truth that will inspire humility.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-02
This book should be listed as required reading for all. The fact that it was written by a witness to the brutal, inhumane ambitions of mankind, is testimony with which we might more acurately explain some of our social dilemas. The author wrote, without an agenda, what the conditions were on board a slave vessel. Apalling, dehumanizing, brutal. The history depicted is a necessary lesson if we ever hope not to repeat the devestation. Spend 50 day on board a slave vessel and you will carry the experience with you forever.

This is yet another fantastic piece of journalism from Ace Reporter Adam Stapleton. The description in this literary mini-masterpiece truly fills my nostrils with the thrill of life not only aboard a Navy vessel but in the galley as well. The sound bites are thrilling and unique, and the attention to detail concerning the cooking and aroma of a galley are top-notch. Anybody interested in cooking should most definitely give this article the long, pleasant sniff it deserves.
