Few moral judgements
It was helpful to read a non-Christian study on street children. It was definitely more sociological and anthropological than most books I've read concerning children at risk, but I appreciated the objectivity. Hecht makes few moral judgments, but paints a picture of a daily reality for street children of northeast Brazil.

An Excellent, Intriguing Book
I bought this book to use for research for my term paper on Brazilian Street Children. Although I was already interested in this subject, I didn't really get into it until I started reading this book. It is very intriguing because it isn't just an outsider's point of view- Tobias Hecht includes numerous interviews with street children he knew well, and stories about the time he spent with these children getting to know them. He also looks at the issues concerning street children from many angles, not from a biased point-of-view, so as to make it more interesting. It's a fascinating topic and I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about this subject, even if it isn't for a term paper.

A harrowing look at street children in Brazil
It has been said that there are two Brazils--the"firstworld" modern archipelago where the rich lived behindwalled compounds, own several houses and apartments, and buy consumer items without regard for price. The rest of the country lives in the Third World--in poverty. Anthropologist Tobias Hecht applies careful, compassionate research and study to the urban dimension of lower class life. On par with Nancy Scheper-Hughes, the book brilliantly brings the tribulations and small triumphs of homeless children to life.

good for PhD quant positions
This book is a good source of sample job interview questions for PhD quant positions. Other good and recommended resources for finance careers are the Vault Guide to the Top Finance Firms, the Vault Career Guide to Investment Banking, and the Vault Guide to Finance Interviews. Also try the harvard guide to finance careers.

very good
This book is good for PhD level candidates, but in my opinion there is more and better objective information for MBA and associate level candidates on Finance and investment banking careers in the Vault Career Guide to Investment Banking and in the Vault Guide to Finance Interviews, which have the added benefit of being able to be purchased on vault.com and downloaded immediately. Good luck.

Do NOT interview for any analytic job before reading this!
This book is specifically targeted at those applying for highly-quantitative jobs on Wall Street, and any job seeker in that area would be nuts not to take advantage of the inside information Professor Crack reveals.

The reason I am writing this review, though, is that I believe the sample interview questions and advice are invaluable to anyone interviewing for any job that involves a lot of analysis.

I am not in the finance field, but rather in technology consulting. Having practiced with Heard on the Street, I found the "tough" interview questions I encountered to be downright easy, and I breezed through several rounds of interviews, landing the job I wanted at a major computer company best known by its three-letter acronym.

If you're headed to Wall Street, reading this book is a no-brainer. If you're headed anywhere else that involves numbers, logic or analysis of a non-financial nature, you'll still be glad you read it.

Great book indeed
Cliff Robertson once told me: "Dennis Foley is a lying sack of crud. I've never met him, never even heard of him; what a pathetic loser."

Good Coverage of Major Scandal!
This book gives details of David Begelman the head man at
Columbia Pictures getting caught forging Cliff Robertson's name
on a check. Robertson had won an Oscar for his role in Charly.
As a result of Begelman getting caught Roberetson would suffer
mightily at the hands of the powerful in Hollywood.Cliff Robertson wound up being blacklisted as a result of this scandal. This scandal would send shockwaves from Hollywood to
Wall Street. You are given a complete coverage of this event in
this excellent book. You are given good coverage of some of the
individuals who were involved in this scandal.David Begelman's demise is also given coverage in this book. This is an excellent book on this event. Read it. You will not be dissapointed.

Cliff Robertson is the true star of this story.
David Begelman would never have been exposed as the crook he was without the dogged, principled determination of Cliff Robertson to get to the bottom of corruption at the top levels of Hollywood. This excellent book documents Robertson's heroic efforts to get at the truth -- for which he was blackballed by the Hollywood establishment for years. Cliff once said to me: "Of all the things in my life I'm proud of -- if I'm proud at all -- is not winning the best actor Oscar or Emmy; it's my part in bringing down that crook Begelman." But perhaps the book is most valuable for its exposure of the top echelon of Hollywood -- controlled by people with lots of money and no taste; people who know nothing whatever about movies. And could care less. I hope this book is reprinted soon. It is timeless.

The Math Behind Wall Street: How the Market Works and How to Make It Work for You

By outlining and explaining the enigmatic terms and concepts used to track and ultimately determine stock movements, The Math Behind Wall Street: How the Market Works and How to Make it Work for You, by Bentley College mathematics professor Nicholas Teebagy, is designed to provide average investors with financial tools that usually are the province of professionals. Intimidated by the likes of ARCH/GARCH models and neural networks? Don't be. Teebagy begins by describing the basics of probability and risk in order to clarify the way that uncertain future events are taken into account to form a well-reasoned investment analysis. In clear language, and with the welcome assistance of numerous charts and graphs, he then goes on to specify how all this can be used to calculate the potential performance of an entire portfolio. Lastly, he offers an introduction to advanced topics such as the aforementioned ARCH/GARCH models (for tracking periods of continued volatility) and neural networks (which attempt to imitate the way human brains process information). While not for the fiscally faint of heart, this short but information-packed volume will assist serious investors as they try to keep ahead of evolving market trends. --Howard Rothman
Average review score:

Excellent for technical oriented investors
This book places heavy emphasis on the technical and mathematical aspect of investing. It is quite excellent but I found the math to be very advanced and therefore it is probably not suitable to most individual investors. Like the previous reviewer, I also found the book to be too brief.

This book definitely has merit, but it isn't right for beginners or the mainstream investment community. The best audience would be investors with highly specialized investing methods.

The Best Introduction
I am currently on a Financial Markets course that is at Masters Level. I bought this book because of its small size and the basic details it covers. I have many other bigger books that go into more detail about stock pricing. However, this book really does explain the basics better than any other I have read. It explains in very simple and statistical terms areas such as the Simple Index Model (SIM), CAPM , Measuring performance of a portfolio, and Modern Portfolio theory. It also touches the surface of advanced moddelling in ARCH/GARCH.

But what really sets it apart is that it explains terms not from a purely academic point of view but a much more informative way by looking at how investors should and would approach a problem. If you have some understanding of statistics such as mean and variance (although both are explained in the book) then I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about embarking on an investment course of some kind. It is a definite read for any beginner and will make the course easier becasue it explains the fundamentals very well.

Savvy, informative, invaluable reading.
Savvy investors in the stock market need knowledge of the math behind the market, and The Math Behind Wall Street provides it: a slim book masks a wealth of information covering statistics, probability, and other practical applications of business math concepts. From risk factors to annual rates of return, The Math Behind Wall Street will prove invaluable.

I love transportation and Maybelle is a favorite. Great art!
I am five and I can read. I love transportation books. I have books by Virginia Lee Burton- Katy, Mike Mulligan and The Little House. I got Maybelle for Xmas. I like the cable car and the Golden Gate Bridge. I like the artwork. I looked up San Francisco on my map and on the internet. If you like transportation, this is a great story!

Maybelle
I just bought this book for my 4-year-old son (and myself!). He loves it. The book is about cable cars in San Francisco and is practically a history lesson. It's also fun!

Cable Car nostalgia for Kids!
One of my favorite books one I was a kid, and enjoyable for grown-ups, as well. Some wonderful art illustrating the workings of a cable car, San Francisco scenery, hilly hills with loads of cable car track, and a sweet story giving a simplified history of the train with a cable, and some contemporary settings(contemporary for when this book was originally released)chronicling the rise and popularity of the bus. But not to worry, Maybelle and her sisters win an election to stay in the city by the bay. Extremely enjoyable and under-rated.

fun, beautiful work
Since I got in the habit of looking at manhole cover designs in San Diego, where I grew up, I was tickled to come across this title while looking for another book (Omeyagi). I loved it, very interesting and beautiful to look at. Almost inspired me to actually sew something, but I managed to overcome the feeling. I'm not a quilter, but I like to read about quilts and buy them. I recommend this book highly.

Imagination at your feet
Quilting with Manhole Covers was a gift that I have thoroughly enjoyed. It takes your imagination beyond the traditional approach and shows quilting ideas in everything around you, even underfoot. I especially like the line-drawing for each design. The color illustrations get my creative juices flowing.

A wonderous view of the world through a quilter's eyes
MacGregor's book contains a beautiful display of manhole cover quilting. Artfully arranged, pleasing to the eye and other senses, this quilting is truly an artform unlike any other! Inspiring and yet undaunting, the author leads you to believe there is beauty in everything-- you, too, can see it and capture it; or, in the least, enjoy such art through her book.

Street Food (Ryland, Peters and Small International Cookbooks , Vol 1, No 4)
Published in Hardcover by Time Life (March, 1999)

The basic premise of Street Food is just brilliant. A survey of food cooked and/or eaten on the streets of cities around the world promises some of the most excitingly vivid eating imaginable, and, continent by continent, Clare Ferguson delivers.
  • From the Americas: Hush Puppies, Corn Dogs, and Cheeseburgers from the North; Chicken in Banana Leaves, Tortilla Wraps, and Jerk Pork from the Latin South and the Caribbean
  • Europe: Italian Pizzas and Ice Cream, Scottish Fish and Chips, Greek Tiropitakia (fried cheese pastries)
  • Africa and the Middle East: Turkish Lamb Pies, Iranian Roasted Beetroot, Nigerian Caraway Pastries
  • India: Samosas, Tandoori Chicken (a particularly good version of this favorite), and Mango Kulfi
  • Southeast Asia: Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup, Philippines Pork Spring Rolls, Burmese Coconut Ice Cream
  • China, Japan, and Korea: Fried Wonton Dumplings, Tempura, Korean Barbecued Beef
When the book reaches Australia and New Zealand, the sheer variety goes into overdrive, with cuisines from all over the world contributing to these young nations: Vietnamese Pork Satays, Lebanese Souvlaki, and Hokey Pokey (Scottish-Italian honeycomb toffee ice-cream).

Many readers will regret the omission of that one item that, for them, epitomized the experience of eating in the street. Mine would be the spicy, charred bratwurst grilled over fruit wood at a stall in one of Berlin's Christmas markets, smeared with mustard and eaten in a roll, washed down with hot mulled wine. I'm sure Clare Ferguson meant to include it, had her publishers allowed her more space.

Street food at its best is pure pleasure--it has to be. Why else pay for it and eat it? Pure pleasure is what Street Food offers in abundance. This is a fabulous collection, evocatively written, beautifully designed, and ravishingly illustrated. --Robin Davidson, Amazon.co.uk

Good but incomplete
The book includes some hard to think of items but excludes more obvious ones. Where, for example, is the pizza slices you can get only in upper west NYC, or the rye bread slice and pickled cucumbers to go with the sausages of Vien, the squashed grape juice decorated with kivi slices you can get in Beirut, the mashed liver wrapped in pastry leaves and deep fried as done in Moscow, fresh skinned walnut pieces kept in icy cold water as sold in Taheran streets or the fried pineapple slieces of Bangkok served on palm leaves, etc. However, it manages to water ones mouth enough to get up and try some that are described.

Better than a Coney Island Hot Dog...
If you're a big fan of munching on pizza by the slice, soft pretzels and hot dogs smothered in sauerkraut bought from corner
vending stands, then you're in for a treat with the cookbook Street Food. This cookbook takes you all over the world to show
you what people are eating on the run. From hush puppies, corn dogs and cheeseburgers in the States to Chicken in Banana
Leaves, Tortilla Wraps and Jerk Pork from the Latin South and the Caribbean. There are too many tasty recipes to list here,
but some highlights include: Scottish Fish and Chips, Greek Tiropitakia (fried cheese pastries), Turkish Lamb Pies, Iranian
Roasted Beetroot, Tandoori Chicken, Philippines Pork Spring Rolls, Burmese Coconut Ice Cream, Hokey Pokey
(Scottish-Italian honeycomb toffee ice-cream) and Lebanese Souvlaki. The book not only has stomach-growling recipes from
across the globe, but also features beautiful photographs of the countries and its people eating as they walk through busy city
streets.

"Takin' It to the Streets": A Sixties Reader

Used price: $28.00

Primary Sources for the 1960's
This book is an anthology of numerous primary source statements, manifestos, and letters concerning events in America during the 1960's. "Takin it to the Streets" turned out to be very helpful for a class I took on this time period. There is so much here and that it boggles the mind. Almost all viewpoints are represented in some respect or another, although some might be missing or not as well represented, as one of the other reviewers of this book pointed out.

What you will find in this book are excerpts from the Port Huron Statement, conservative viewpoints on the anti-war movement, the platform for the Black Panther party, accounts of sit-ins during the civil rights struggle in the South, feminist statements and a million other things. It must have been difficult at times to put this book together, as deciding what to include (and what not to include) would be extremely difficult. Chances are whatever you're looking for is probably here in some form or another. Very helpful as a guide through this tumultuous time and essential for a student trying to get the feel for the times.

Very good, extensive collection of primary documents
This over 600 page book consists of primary documents from numerous sources, as well as succinct and helpful introductions by the editors that help to identify the selections and put them in context. It should be a valuable resource for scholars and non-scholars alike, though an index would have made it somewhat more user-friendly.

The book mostly consists of selections from the leftist and counter-culture movements of the 60s, though there is a token pro-Establishment section with items from the likes of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

Due to my own personal interests, I would have appreciated seeing more selections from the nonviolent elements of the 60s movements-the pacifists, nonviolent anarchists, Gandhians, conscientious objectors, etc. Certainly the book does not neglect these elements entirely, but they are not as well represented as I might have liked.

Many things struck me in reading this book. I found the idealism--and what some would dismiss as naivete--of some of the early civil rights activists and of the Free Speech Movement leaders among others to be quite appealing. On the other hand, many of the selections serve as useful reminders that the factionalism, the bitter strident rhetoric, the simplistic ideologies, the in-fighting, the condemnation of anyone not accepted as a co-victim, etc. that I tend to think of as mostly insignificant excesses that arose late in the game after years of defeat and frustration were actually present all along.

What you won't find much of is the cynicism, apathy, smugness, defeatism, etc. of more recent times. Whatever is objectionable about some of the people you'll encounter in these selections, at least they had a sincerity about them, a desire to make their society and their world a better place, and a willingness to take action in accordance with their ideals. A few of them and their ideological descendants in the politically correct crowd have surely done more harm than good, but on the whole, they were on the right side of the vast majority of the issues they fought on, and even their quite limited successes have left us with slightly more freedom and justice, and slightly less war-tolerance than before they came along.

The 60s - In a Delicious Nutshell
A pleasurable educational experience. I was introduced to the book in college but sold it back after the course ended, out of shear stupidity. Apparently, the book has not gone down in price since then, nor can I find a used copy anywhere. I'll have to buy another one, as it is essential. No other book out there is like Takin' It to the Streets, in that it represents all the varied power movements, and is filled to the brim with primary sources that will move you and in some cases even shock you. Read this book and you feel like you lived through 60s - and, if you are like me, you might even want to go back! Amazing.

45 Years in Wall Street

Worth buying even if just for the 24 never failing rules
Most famous for his 24 never-failing rules - basically follow the trend, use stop losses, and never average down. Also includes lots of useful Dow data back to 1912 - with swing charts, etc.

Excellent! The predecessor of all trading books
This book was written in 1949. By all means what put forth by Gann as the 12 and the 24 rules are still valid today. In fact, his ideas are still being copied in simply all other trading books. Even the diary like section in Soros' Alchemy of Fianance did resembled the style of a majority part of this book. In short, a must read for any trader!

Remark: One might think that I am a crazy Gann friend. To justifiy the title I put for this review, I would like to summarize Gann's 12 and 24 rules for one's reference:-

The 12 rules:-
1. Determine the trend
2. Buy at single, double and triple bottoms
3. Buy and sell on percentages
4. Buy and sell on 3 weeks' advance or decline
5. Market moves in sections/waves
6. Buy or sell on 5 to 7 point moves
7. Study volume to determine change in trend
8. Study time factor and time periods to determine change in trend. (p.s. when a time period on a decline exceeds that of a previous decline, it indicates a change in trend)
9. Buy on higher tops and bottoms
10. A change in trend often occurs just before or after holidays. (p.s. when prices are at high levels there are usually several swings up and down, then when the market breaks the low of the last swing it indicates a reversal and change in trend)
11. Buy on a second reaction at a higher bottom. When it reacts only 2 days, it is in a very strong position.
12. Price gains in fast moves does not last very long.

The 24 rules:-
1. Never risk one tenth of capital in one trade.
2. Always use stop loss orders.
3. Never overtrade.
4. Never let a profit run into a loss.
5. Do not buck the trend.
6. When in doubt, get our or dont get in.
7. Trade only active stocks.
8. Equal distribution of risk in 4 or 5 stocks.
9. Trade market order.
10. Dont clsoe your trades without a good reason.
11. Accumulate a surplus
12. Never buy just to get a dividend.
13. Never average a loss.
14. Never get out/in of the market because of impatience or anxiety.
15. Avoid taking small profits and big losses.
16. Never cancel a stop loss order after you placed it.
17. Avoid getting in and out of the market too often.
18. Be just as willing to seel short as you are to buy. Let your object be to keep with the trend and make money.
19. Never buy/sell just because the price is low/high.
20. Wait till the stock is very active and has crossed resistance levels before pyramiding.
21. Select stocks with small volume of shares outstanding to pyramid on the buying side.
22. Never hedge one stock by another.
23. Trade with a plan and do not get out without a definite indication of a change in trend.
24. Avoid increasing trading size after a long period of success.

THE STOCK MARKET BOOK THAT NEVER GETS OUTDATED
I am a trader in U.S. Treasury instruments and therefore keep a close watch on the stock market as this has an important bearing on Treasuries. This book helps me to understand the stock market better than any other book.

Whilst many books deal with the fundamental aspects of employment, marketing, sales, import/ export, trade problems, taxes, industrial disputes etc. Mr. Gann does his analysis by means of mathematical calculations which are based on natural law and therefore cannot get outdated!

I currently own all of Mr. Gann's books and would like to state that this is truly his most updated and best book for stock traders giving over 50 years of his experience in the markets. The valuable information contained here will repay itself many times over.
