Another Liffey Winner
John Shannon has done it again--kept me up till the wee hours, then had me dead on my feet at work the next day. But I just couldn't put Streets of Fire down, and it wasn't simply because the book is an edge-of-the-chair-page-turner--which it is. But beyond that I became intensely concerned about what would happen to Maeve and Ornetta--and to Jack Liffey, of course, but that was secondary. I always count on Liffey mysteries for substance as well as plot, and here I was not disappointed. No writer does a more skilled job of depicting the way L. A. class and cultural complexities work themselves into any given situation. I loved this book and hope for another Liffey mystery soon--despite what it will do to my workday.

Once again, brilliant!
I have to shake my head in bemusement at the pure venom of the Publishers Weekly review. Clearly, the reviewer had an agenda, and he vented at John Shannon's expense in what is not any sort of recognizable review but a misinformed tirade. Having been subjected myself to similar tirades (and having shaken my head in bemusement over those, too) I cannot say I'm surprised, just merely dismayed.

John Shannon has written yet another exceptional entry in the Jack Liffey series--which is not so much a traditional mystery as it is an extension of a formidable array of character studies. The author has an extraordinary feel for the inner lives of young people and he writes about them with insight and never-faltering respect.

Jack looks for missing children. And along the way, with dark humor, a certain touching fatalism, and an eye for the endless apocalyptic glimpses of life in Los Angeles (a man juggling sundry power tools, all of them turned on; two boys tap-dancing in the midst of a riot), he introduces us to an ever-fascinating view of well-drawn, heartfelt characters. In Streets on Fire, there are so many splendidly real characters--even the villains are well above stereotype--that it's difficult to single any one of them out for acknowledgment. But my personal favorite in this cast is the eleven-year-old Ornetta, a born story-teller who believes in the magic of her talisman (which, incredibly, is a crack vial that belonged to her mother). Liffey's daughter Maeve, who comes into her own in this book, teams with Ornetta in a climactic scene that is wrenching and powerful, as the two girls struggle with a wheelbarrow bearing Maeve's injured father, making their way through the riot-riven streets of the city, trying to get Liffey to a hospital. Ultimately, a potent couple comes to the aid of the two girls, only to find themselves pursued by a massive pack of dogs. This pack is the metaphor within the metaphor that illustrates what can happen when the tamed are suddenly set free to do what they will. And what they will do, too often, is madly, randomly violent.

I loved this book. It speaks volumes about the inherent goodness and evil that reside in the hearts of the people all around us, and makes clear the simple truth that, "Doing the right thing is never a mystery."

Streets on Fire has my highest recommendation.

Jack Liffey is hot!
Once again we are treated to tales of urban L.A. with all its warts & diamonds, through the eyes of the intriguing Jack Liffey.
This book has a backdrop of the real stuff, including racial unrest & folks who rise above it, which only adds to the engaging plot. Daughter Maeve & her new friend young Ornetta play important roles, & Shannon's ability to portray kids makes it even more special to read. This is my hometown & I love the way Shannon writes about it! I learn new things about L.A. with each Jack Liffey adventure.

Ive read better Honda books than this one
I ordered this book and the High Performance Honda Builders Handbook Volume 1 and I highly recommend that book rather than this. Poorly written book but it does have the basics in it. And yes I returned this book back for a refund.

Great for beginners
As a beginning tuner, I have found this book to be very helpful. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in modifying their Civic, Prelude, Accord, or Integra. The information is presented in a fairly organized fashion, so it is easy to follow. Most of the parts and processes are described accurately in their cost and difficulty to install/perform. There are a few brand-name plugs, but most of the names mentioned are truly high quality parts (and not just paying sponsors).

The author seems very knowledgable about the topic, though there are some disheartening typos... Like VTEC being spelled VTECH... not usually the sign of a Honda expert!

A beginning tuner will enjoy learning the basics of engine design. Kojima wisely describes an engine as a giant air pump, and explains the importance of air flow very well. Thanks to this book, I knew exactly what size intake and exhaust to buy when I swapped an H22 engine into my 92 Accord (unfortunately, the info given on swaps is limited). There is also a good deal of detail when it comes to cam design and timing, head modifications, bottom end modifications, piston design, etc.

The majority of this book is focused on forced induction, such as nitrous oxide, supercharging, and turbocharging. The author clearly favors turbocharging, and goes fairly deep into some math and theory. There is definitely a wealth of information on turbocharging for anyone who is interested.

The book also seems geared toward the B series engines, with the H series being a bit of an afterthought. Still, I was able to learn very much useful information. I still learn a bit every time I pick it up! Definitely worth the money for a beginner. Experts may not find much new information here.

excellent book
Being a ameteur tuner, I bought this book and learned so much. Every question I had was answered regarding B series and even more! It doesnt go insanely into depth about some things mentioned in the book, but it goes into depth where its needed. It even gives you suggestions for OEM part swaps to gain hp for less money. excellent buy... a must have for any honda enthusiast!

Great Sequel!
Well, it is hard to write a review on a book like this, without giving away the ending! So, I will just say that the threatening calls start again, and this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. I enjoyed it and hope you do too!

The Wrong Number
R.L. Stine's book The Wrong Number is a suspenseful, action-packed murder story. Deena and Jade make some harmless prank calls to kids at school. It all falls apart when Deena's brother Chuck catches them and wants in on the action. Only his calls are not so harmless. He makes a call to a Fear Street resident who is about to be murdered. Now the murderer knows who they are and where they live. Something that started as a prank ends in a murder.
I love mystery books. This book kept me in suspense until the last chapter. I recommend The Wrong Number to anyone who likes to read suspenseful stories, likes mysteries, and who has spare time because once you pick it up you will not want to stop reading.

Mr. Farberson is Back . . . For Revenge!
It's been a year since Deena, Jade, and Chuck almost got murdered by Mr. Farberson. Now they're safe because Farberson is in jail. Or are they? Deena is sitting on the couch watching the news on T.V. when she hears that Farberson was just released from jail. Now she's desperated and doesn't know what to do. Then she discovers that someone wants them dead. Is it really Farberson? You'll have to read this book to find out.

Not what I expected
This book is not exactly what I expected, and the title is a little misleading. This book is not exactly a historical account of the the happenings of Azusa Street. Rather, it is more like the "The Memoirs of Frank Bartleman" or maybe better, "I was at the Azusa Street Revival." This book is an eyewitness account of Azusa Street, and the events leading up to the outpouring of the Spirit in Los Angelas.

At times, Bartleman seems to have an axe to grind, as he obviously did not agree with all that transpired at Azusa Street, and all the sects that spung forth from that movement. This book is more of a sermon or testimony than an attempt to be a history book.

While I believe this book to probably be an essential to any library for Pentecostal research, but is probably a poor place to start if you are not already familiar with what occured at Azusa Street.

Really good
im 17 and had to write a paper on the lines of revival and this book is awesome. You can hardly put it down once u start reading it. I encourage ppl to get this.

The Adventures, Trials, and Opinions of Frank Bartleman
When I sat down to read "Azusa Street" I expected extensive accounts of the Azusa Street revival meetings of 1906-1909. To my surprise, information about Azusa was not the focus of the book. It could have better been titled "The Adventures, Trials, and Opinions of Frank Bartleman." The book is essentially a journal of Bartleman's experiences in the early Pentecostal movement from 1904 to 1910, inclusive of his involvement in the Azusa Street Mission. Vinson Synan's introduction is informative and helpful in setting a framework for the rest of the book.

The book is an opportunity to view the life and mindset of this early 20th Century Pentecostal preacher. His life was not easy but it was greatly dependent upon God. Bartleman is a fascinating character. He is extremely opinionated, often critical and fanatical in his stands. At the same time his passion for the ministry, his simple yet unwavering faith, and his deep hunger for God are inspiring. I was moved by the sacrifice paid by this forerunner and challenged by his teaching on "death to the self-life." I recommend "Azusa Street" to those desiring a look inside early Pentecostalism.

Good book about a great subject
Schwab has redefined Wall Street. He and Bogle have been two lone voices calling for ethical treatment of the customer, and they actually have tried to practice what their preached. The is the first book about Schwab instead of by him, and it is worth reading.

One of Schwab's greatest strengths is adaptation, but that means that any book written about him and his company will quickly be out of date. In this case, it was written before the US Trust acquisition and before he gave up the co-CEO role. It was also written at the beginning of the long, painful downturn following the crash of the NASDAQ that has hurt Schwab as much as anyone.

I can't wait to read the sequel.

Ex-Schwab employee enjoyed reading it!
As an ex-Schwab employee (1988 - 1996) I really enjoyed reading this book. I worked for or with several of the folks interviewed and was at HQ in San Fran. the day after the earthquake--pretty incredible day! I have recommended it to all of my ex-Schwab buddies.

Insightful!
Business writer John Kador describes the evolution of Charles Schwab & Company, a former discount brokerage blessed with the ability to transform itself through four different incarnations. Kador emphasizes Schwab's commitment to integrity and customer service, a code that enabled it to prevail despite upheavals and threats. While the book focuses on the company, the running portrait of Chuck Schwab gives it a personal core. Kador highlights Schwab's concern with exercising his values and leading a highly principled business amid an often shady industry he saw as corrupted by greed. Kador's engaging narrative style is designed to inform and entertain general investors, executives and managers. At times, the discussion of Chuck Schwab and his company sounds almost too laudatory, as if the book is an in-house publicity piece. We from getAbstract recommend that readers should take all that sugar with a grain of salt, given this otherwise compelling dish.

Of Legends and Myths
Perhaps I missed the point. As anyone who reads a book about Ansel Adams, I am also a great fan of his work, and like many others too, a photographer with no claim to fame.

The amount of interesting information in this book regarding the life of Ansel Adams is wonderful. The people he knew, the places he's been, and the struggles he's undertaken are all part of a dazzling portrait of the man we do not know simply from looking at his work. It is a book which provides historicaly interesting snapshots from his life (literally, and figuratively), and lets us see glimpses of the lives of other great artists too.

What I found unpleasant was getting to know someone I may not have liked as a colleague or friend. The opinions or thoughts which flow from the pages of this this autobiographical are not always as polished as the photos we have come to know and love. In fairness, the man is not his work, and the work, likewise, is not who he is as a person. I have seen them both now, and prefer the work over the man (at least as he presented himself to me). I also thought that many of the events or persons which Adams spoke of where ALMOST done so by way of 'name dropping' in order to gain attention for himself (i.e. 'see who I know'). This was unnecasary I thought, and only made me wonder why he felt a need to do it that way, if indeed it was intentional.

I was particularly troubled by one of his closing observations on the value of photography as a fine art form, and how a photograph is, beyond all others, the most difficult form of art there is to create. I should think Michael Angelo, Monet, Picaso, or hundreds of other amazing artists through the ages may be inclined to a different viewpoint, even if they wouldn't admit to it.

Matt Lang

Brilliant photos, sanitized text?
First of all, the reproductions of Adams' photographs in the hardcover edition are excellent. The text is designed to relate to the photos, directly or indirectly, without distracting too much from the photos. Adams does tend to lean towards the philosophical towards the end of some chapters, perhaps with a well-founded basis.

However, I think it is fair to say that Adams has "visualized" himself in a stylized and abstract manner, not unlike his photographs of the wilderness, cropping any rough edges of his life and ultimately contributing to (even propagating?) the myth surrounding his life.

After reading his autobiography, I am now looking forward to reading his biography, written by Mary Street Alinder, his editor in the present effort. I hope that she reveals some of the driving tensions and flaws in his life, much in the same way James Gleick filled in the more sombre details of Richard Feynman's life that he glossed over in his autobiographies.

Great Ansel Adams Book!
If you're looking for a great bio on Ansel Adams, this is the book for you. It is a great, fact-filled book.

The Three Horrors in one
A familly moves into a house on fear st. they were expecting much more than what they received.Cally and Cody(the twins) met a boy named anthony who tells them the story of the house that they in and thats when the horror starts.

Holy...these books were scary!
If you want a good scare, do yourself a favor and buy this trilogy of 99 Fear Street. These books scared me out of my wits! It's about a family of 2 girls, 1 boy, and a mother and a father. They move into 99 Fear Street--the house that even the residents on Fear Street are afraid to enter.(And I don't blame them!) These books are the most entertaining ever, and R.L. Stine is an absolute genius!

Great trilogy! It reminded me of the movie "Poltergeist"!
This was a great set of books. As I said above, this trilogy was very similar to the movie "Poltergeist" with the whole haunted house elements. These three books had very scary elements, such as when the little boy disappeared and they could hear him yelling, "Come help me mommy (and/or) Daddy, it's dark here and I'm scared." and, "I found Cubby, daddy (and/or) Mommy!" R.L Stine really knows how to bring out the fear in us!

What a Joke!
What do you know? Another Robbins wanna-be. How original!

Great Concept, Only Little Bit is Missing...
The reason why I became interested in this book, in the first place, is the fact that it is a personal success story by a man who has seen the worst and the best. He knows how it feels to be in the lowest place, but he also knows how grand it feels to be the winner, a millionaire, a father and successful business man.

This alone convinced me that his book is something extraordinary, and I should listen to what he has got to say. After all, he is not theorizing, but speaking based on his own experiences.

This book, unlike so many other "self-help" books, is much fun to read. It does feel like you are in one-to-one discussion with the author himself. After all, I couldn't lay down the book once I started reading it.

The author also provides several wonderful workbook exercises that are designed to guide you on the right path. Doing these exercises will ensure the maximum benefit.

The only factor that was left out from this book is the importance of feelings in creating success. That is the reason why I only give it 4 starts instead of full 5 stars.

However, if you were to combine what this book teaches in what Darel Rutherford's "Being the Solution" teaches... I could promise that you will be successful. The success principle works with mathematical exactitude. There is no reason to sit back. Invest your money in these two books.

I shall meet you on the top! Good Luck!

This book is really MOTIVATING!
"I couldn't put this book down! Reading John's remarkable story of how he overcame such huge obstacles to achieve tremendous success is really: MOTIVATING!"

Durango Street by Andrew
Durango Street is a teen novel that a lot of kids should read because it teaches you what not to do during your teen years. Frank Bonham wrote a novel about Rufus Hennry. Rufus was a teen that was brought to a work camp for grand theft auto and when he gets out, his parole officer tells him that he can't join any gangs or else he will have to go back to work camp, but he does.
Rufus attitude changed based on who he is with; this sometimes causes him to make unwise and thoughtless choices, such as rejoining a gang. There are many examples of unwise decisions Rufus makes, such as joining gangs and hurting people. Both of those decisions affect his parole officer and his family. He also steals from stores and lies too much. These actions affect his parole officer and his family.
I liked Durango Street because there was a lot of fighting and adventure. It also left you thinking about what was going to happen in the next chapter. I think most teens would like this book because of all the adventure that happens. I recommend this book to most teens. It's a great book and I really liked it.

GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Durango Street is a story about about a boy named Rufus facing gang and life struggles. Rufus Henry is a boy with a lot of potential, but he has gotten himself into the wrong place with the wrong people. The book starts out with Rufus in work camp after being charged with grand theft auto. But when he is released from camp, there is only one place for him to go, back to Durango Street. Immediately after Rufus arrives at his home he runs into trouble with the gang called the Gassers. Before long the Gassers are after him and Rufus finds he has no chioce but to join the gang the Moors. With the Moors behind him, Rufus is staying alive and safe for a while. But when the Gassers catch up with the Moors, trouble and "war" breaks out. Rufus learns that this lifestyle is not the way to live his life, and does his best to end the "war". He faces many life and death situations, but he always seems to come out clean. Rufus learned a lot from this experience and eventually understands that his life is not a dead end, but a life with a great future. THIS BOOK is AWESOME!

come on rl stine-you can do better
this book was okay. it wasn't gory at all and there wasn't much of a mystery to solve. the end is quite predictable. as i love the fear street books, i know how good the books can be, and this one isn't near the top of the list. RL Stine CAN do better. but, give this book a go, check this book out 4 yourself.

Wasn't all that great.
This is a basic love story. It's not really that good. It's kind of confusing at times. But if you're a devout Stine fan, then I suggest reading it. Then again, usually Stine fans such as myself are hardly ever surprised when the ending rolls around.

it was o.k
