A++
Beverley Naidoo is an award winning author. Her book No Turning Back is exceptional. The story takes place in South Africa in the early 1990s, where a young black African boy of twelve years named Sipho makes a decision to leave home to avoid further abuse from his violent stepfather. Sipho makes his way to the streets of Johannesburg. Survival on the streets is sometimes just as hard and cruel as life with his stepfather. Learning who you can trust, hunger and cold nights are a few of the problems Sipho faces.
The author in my opinion touches base on many issues including homeless street children, drugs, racism and a country on the verge of change. The book shows many examples on how the South African's rose to support Nelson Mandela and his views of restructuring a troubled nation. The books realism gives readers a chance to become familiar with life in South Africa. Sipho struggles are those of everyday people in this region of the world. I would recommend this book as one not to pass over. You can follow Sipho from being alone, threw new friendships and his hopes for a better tomorrow.

Out standing
The book No Turning Back is a great shortlist book. This book is a great book to read on the fly. The book leaves you wanting more. The easy reading leave of this book lets you cruise through the pages very easily. The book keeps you guessing till the last minute.
The book is a boy named Sipho. Sipho is a young boy who runs away from his abusive stepfather to the life of the malunde (the street children of South Africa). The story takes place in apartheid S. Africa, right before the election of Nelson Mandela to Office. Sipho has to learn how to survive on the streets of Johannesburg, in a little outskirt called Hillsborough. Sipho gets lucky to make friends early on and find a clan to be able to help him in the way of the streets. Along the way Sipho meets a local shop owner in Hillsborough that gives him a job and a place to stay for a while. Sipho after commotion in the shop owner's house, Sipho runs away to a boy's shelter. The book has a cliffhanger ending that unless you read you will never find out what it is.

Fascinating
Simon Price has a great advantage when writing the MSP biography. He is both an MSP Fan, and a member of the music press, thus he has both an objective and personal perspective on the Manics to offer. His essays and opinions are fascinating, whilst the history he writes is immensely knowledgeable. At least 50 reviewers have said this before, but every MSP fan should own it. Heck, every MUSIC fan should own it, it's a brilliant piece of rock journalism.

My truth
I don't think I can add very much to what the previous reviewers have written regarding the book. However, contrary to what others have said I disagree that Price being so close to the band and having witnesssed many of the events is a bad thing. Golly that's why it's so great. Price has achieved a level of understanding on the manics through his "being there" few will ever surpass. He is a true fan. Regarding the reviewers bias charge I find the author not guilty. He lends equal weight to both positive and negative attributes of individual band members. The last thirty pages he rightfully laments the manics easy transformation in to a rather impersonal stadium rock act. Overall a well written and objective account of this once important band's history.

Their truth...
My dear friend Fiona from Newcastle turned me on to the Manics in 1991 and their first San Francisco show the following year (in the wake of the L.A. riots) remains one of the most powerful I've seen. How fitting, then, that Fiona should send me this book in my Christmas package. Simon Price makes a compelling story even more so with his riveting writing style, lust for detail, insightful analyses, and insider's view. He whisks the reader from Blackwood bedrooms to the world stage and misses nothing along the way, thank God. Who better to even attempt to take on such a task than Price, a gifted writer whose love for the band imbues the story but who can also provide objectivity and constructive criticism?
Buy this book if you're mad on the Manics and just try to put it down. Buy this book if you're a casual fan or have never heard of them and see what you've been missing.

Read it over a weekend...
This book was REALLY suspenseful. I especially liked when they were trying to escape, and it was scary when they saw the guy staring at them from outside

The ending was a bit confusiing though [i still don't really get it]

*sparkle*

Ski Weekend
This story is about kids that were playing in the snow. The main characters' names are: Ariel Munroe, Doug Mahr, and Shannon Harper, Doug's girlfriend.

Ski Weekend is very scary, because the kids that were there were playing and suddenly a blizzard came. Some people even died.

This is a very good book to read alone or in a group in the dark. It would be appropiate in the winter in front of the fireplace.

Very good!!!
I really liked this book, I guessed who it was but that might be cause ive read a few rl stine books like this one. I read most of this in one day, but i kept leaving the book for hours at a time and i still read from chapter 4 to chapter 18, in that amount of little time. So i highly recommend this fear street to any of you readers.

145th Street : Short Stories

"That's what 145th Street is like. Something funny happens... and then something bad happens. It's almost as if the block is reminding itself that life is hard, and you have to take it seriously." Walter Dean Myers's book of interconnected short stories is a sweet and sour mix of the comedy and tragedy of the human condition, played out against the backdrop of the Harlem neighborhood that is centered around 145th Street. In this 'hood, teens will become acquainted with the mysterious 12-year-old Angela, whose sad dreams seem to predict the future for an unlucky few, and the fast-talking Jamie Farrell, a smooth basketball player who's praying that his streak of good luck doesn't end before he can ask out Celia Evora, "the finest chick in the school." They will chuckle at the affable Big Joe, who wants to enjoy his funeral party while he's still alive, yet feel their hearts tighten when Big Time Henson senses his drug addiction drawing him closer and closer to an early grave.

Myers frankly discusses the consequences of violence, drive-bys and gang war through his articulate characters, but tempers these episodes with such a love of his fictional community that every character shines through with the hope and strength of a survivor. Changing his point of view from teen to adult and back again through each vignette, Myers successfully builds a bridge of understanding between adolescents and adults that will help each group better understand the problems of the other. A worthy and recommended read that beautifully illustrates the good that can come out of a community that stands together. Newbery Honor-winning Myers has written more than 50 books, including Monster and Fallen Angels. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

The world on 145th street
On a 145th street anything can happen. A grow man can have a funeral when he is still alive because he wanted to be at his own, or the cops can come racing down the street chasing someone and nobody would notice. This was just normal activity on 145th street. This book shares many short stories that keep you on your seat wanting to know what happens next. Many of the people in the stories tie into other poeple in the book. I enjoyed this book because it was writen very well and was easy to understand.

Ten amazing stories. One book
This novel is very interesting there is always new events happening, the book never gets boring. The characters are destined to do anything to get there point across. This Harlem setting novel is unpredictable and its jaw dropping. All ten stories in the novel are amusing. In one of the stories it shows how an urban community goes through rough times, but gets through it by sticking together and trusting one another. Walter Dean Myers is an amazing writer, he knows what the readers like. The author takes his readers through 145th street and allows them to exprience events that doesn't happen anywhere else in the world.

The spirit of "the street" is alive in these tales
Award-winning author Myers takes the young reader on a fascinating journey through a brimming-with-life street in New York's Harlem. Each story, while separate, interlocks with the humor, the pathos, the tragedy, and the warmth of the people that inhabit 145th.

Myers doesn't hold back in the presentation of some of the more horrific elements of life in the city. Though the book is not particularly graphic, the book mentions drug abuse, the sadness and pressures of poverty, and the inhumanity of a "drive-by".

But, the book is still uplifting in its portrayal of the familial bonds that dwell on the street as residents come together to assist each other with surviving the trials and tribulations of day to day life.

All of the selections are well-written and engrossing, with special note given to the humorous "Big Joe's Funeral", "The Streak", the touching "The Fighter", the tender "Kitty and Mack: A Love Story", the inspirational "The Christmas Story", and the poignant "Angela's Eyes".

Heart felt story of family, love, and the Christmas spirit
My husband and I personally know the Romp's and just want to give them the highest of accolades for this excellent book Billy has written. It really makes you smile and get warm and fuzzy inside reading about this Vermont family that moves to the city each year to sell Christmas trees and the friendships and bonds that have developed over the years. Christmas on Jane Street is the story about the love between a father and his daughter, family and friends, and the unconditional generosity and true caring people can give to one another. I would highly recommend this book for anyone and everyone.

A lovely story, beautifully told, about family relationships
Christmas on Jane Street first intrigued me since my name is Jane, and I've spent time in New York City and also rural New England, both settings in this book.

It's a beautifully written tale about how the people of New York City befriend, and in turn are befriended by, a family from rural Vermont. The father in the family comes to believe that his daughter has turned to 'city' values, and feels that she is no longer his best friend. In the end, the meaning of family and the holiday spirit is poignantly brought to light.

This book is very relevant to today's families because it talks to the misunderstandings, conflicts, and - ultimately - love, bonding parents and their children. (And it's so well written that I read it completely in one sitting.)

Christmas on Jane Street would be a great gift from a parent to a teen or adult child, or to anyone who believes in the holiday spirit of love and forgiveness...

i have met this family and visited them in greenwich village
i received this book a couple of years ago and was enchanted by it. i live in NJ so for the last 3 years have gone to "jane street" to see this wonderful family. the first year i brought my book with me and the entire family signed it and were absolutely lovely. the next two years i have welcomed them to nyc and brought them cookies, popcorn, etc. they are a joy to manhattan and all mankind. a marvelous family who arrive in their trailer on jane street the day after thanksgiving ever year since 1988 or 1989 (forgot which!)---if you are in new york during this period in time - go pay them a visit; fanatastic family!!!!!!

HOW TO SUCKERPUNCH
Basically, the gist of this book is that it is always best to hit your opponent when he isn't expecting it -- and preferably from the blindside! Reprehensible, but effective nonetheless.

To be fair, I must state for the record that I do not care for Sammy Franco or his enormous ego. I feel that he is arrogant, and not an effective instructor. His books reflect this. For an example of Sammy's arrogance, one need only refer to his "recommended reading" list at the end of this book -- every single book and article listed was written by Sammy Franco! Apparently, he feels that no-one else has ever written anything of significant value pertaining to this subject.

Sammy is big on "pseudospeciation." This is a fine multisyllabic word which he apparently heard a professor use while he was studying Criminal Justice at his local community college. Since big words make one appear to be intelligent, Sammy is sure to include this word at least several times in each of his books.

The illustrations are a joke. They consist of poor resolution computer images which appear to have been constructed on an Atari 400, as well as photographs of Sammy acting out his fantasy he-man scenarios versus compliant mannequin-like opponents unable to resist the power of machismo. He seems to be fond of prancing about in spandex bike shorts. In the final photo, Sammy uncomfortably poses with his German Shephard (at arm's length) while puffing on a stogie -- tobacco smoke irritates K9s and interferes with training as well as bonding.

If you happen to be a fan of Sammy's work, "First Strike" is more of the same. If you are a serious martial artist who is unfamiliar with his work, I'd advise you to pass it by -- there are other authors out there who do a much better job of presenting the same sort of material.

Excellent book!!!
Strike first, strike fast, strike hard! Good advice for almost any situation. This book has an incredable amount of information on pre-fight posturing. His "de-escalation/first strike stance" is something that should be incorperated into every practical personal defense program, from police/security to the average Joe. The drills in this are golden. Much of the training involves proper mental attitude, which is essential when in a high-stress situation. My only real complaints are that there are too many techniques (doesn't look like he follows the KISS principle) and that Mr. Franco's "reference material" is pretty much just his other books. Also, I think some of his principals are better suited for advanced students, even though the book is supposed to be for begginers. Those who are familiar with JKD may find a lot of similarities in this book. Overall, a great book, especially for self-defense instructors, but sometimes just has too much information.

A whole different concept in fighting
First Strike is a great book. The concepts outlined in this book by Sammy Franco are logical and very effective. The concept of striking first in a fight is vital. Franco teaches step by step the best way to perform your preemptive strike and gives various techniques and scenarios to undestand the principles better. Just like any self-defense book, this book is useless without continuous practice of the techniques outlined. Franco also outlines psychological aspects of the fight. The only bad thing, i could point out in this book, altough minimal, is the use too many terms that seem irrelevant in some of the beginning chapters. Overall though the book is pretty straightforward and the techniques are easy to put into use in practice right away.

IN THE RED LEAVES YOU WITH A SMOKEY TASTE IN YOUR MOUTH
Victims inhabiting this tale aren't just killed, they are literally burned to a crisp. Taking the serial killer to new heights, Ashbaugh has written an absorbing book about an investment firm going up in flames as a fire bug targets the wives of top execs. Chief Fire Marshal Jake Ferguson, who carries his own pack of matches from his past, has the detail of tracking the bitter barbeque-r across the state of NY in an effort to stop the cooking. In order to understand his prey (and the readers to understand the story), Ferguson learns the ins and outs of the stock market as he teaches us why and how a fire can burn out of control. After the middle of the book, the suspect is no longer a secret and even his reasoning is divulged before the traditional climax and exposure, but the book still held my interest due to the fact the author has made the characters appealing and interesting. The book ends abruptly, however, even with all situations resolved and left me with a rather empty feeling. I will never read about a fire again, I must say, without thinking of facts I did learn from reading this interesting but overly long mystery.

Red Hot
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Suspense...Action...Adventure...Arson...Murder... Ashbaugh fully develops his characters in an extremely riveting piece of fiction. The author captures the reader from start to finish with intelligent observations and exciting action. This is a great summer read--very hard to put down. I'll never look a fire fighter the same again! I could not reccommend this book more highly. I anxiously await Ashbaugh's next novel.

In The Red
Excellent, excellent, excellent. This book and story line was a page turner from the third chapter on. This novel would make an excellent movie. I highly recommend this book.

THIS WAS A GOOD BOOK!! READ IT!!
I think this book was great! It was very suspenceful and you'll never guess who was the killer (well it was a LITLE Obvious!) it kept me reading it all day!!

not scary but a good suspense
i have always love books by R. L. Stine and really enjoyed this one. One of the reason that i liked it so much is because i could picture myself as the main character as i love to act and am known for my acting skills at school. i prefer the more scary books but again, this was a good book. i'm usually really good at guessing the endings but didn't guess this one. Go Fig?

even though i guess i am considered too old to be reading his books i can't help myself. they are good to read right before i go to bed. i recommend all of R. L. Stine's books for young adults and the younger at heart such as myself.

Pretty awesome
Very good book!! Not very scary like some of R.L. Stine's books, but a really great plot!! ANd i was extremely surprised about who the killer was. Like all of his books, the killer is always the person you least suspect. I alwyas guess who it is, and think very carefully about my guess, but i'm ALWAYS wrong. And also, like all of his other books, something freaky happens at the end at every chapter. But this really was a great book!! I definitely recomend this to anyone who likes scary books that are very suspenseful and spooky, but not very gory.

"'Tis the season . . . to die."
Coming home from college for the holidays with her roommate (Grace Morton), Reva Dalby is unaware of the danger that lays ahead for her yet again in this third and final book in the Silent Night trilogy. In this book, she heads a fashion show at her family's department store, after taking credit for designing some scarves her cousin Pam and Pam's friend (Willow) did themselves. But before the show can get under way, one of the models is murdered, followed by yet another (it just sucks being a model in this book), making a murderous trail straight for Reva.

While the previous two Silent Night books switched point of views between Reva and other characters, "Silent Night 3" zeroes in on Reva a little more, of her acting like her usual snobby self--stealing boyfriends and stabbing people in the back, so to speak. Out of the three books, this is my least favorite. It's not as suspenseful as the others until around the end; and even then, there are too many unbelievable plot twists to make "Silent Night 3" very enjoyable. You can probably skip this one and not feel guilty about it.

Tense thriller that builds its characters well.
These Fear Street Super Chillers just keep getting better and better. I love all these books but I will warn readers that the series of R.L. Stine's Super Chillers contains extreme gore and violence but they are also very intelligent and well thought-up. If you don't mind a bit of ketchup on your bangers, then this will be a great read. Now, on with the review! Silent Night 3, the third book in the Silent Night series, is quite frankly a wonderful achievement. It is a book that has atmosphere and even though those are just words on the page, they seem to have an eeriness about them. In the action parts of the book especially, the words seem to explode out of the book. Reva is a brilliant character. She is so horrible and doesn't consider others which makes her unashamedly interesting to read. She is an evil character but somehow we still want her to survive - you'll understand when you read it. Reva is in pretty much every single paragraph and you can see her speaking through the book. This is due to the great descriptive language and character build-up in this horrifying super chiller. The finale to this book was suspenseful and kept you thinking afterwards. The characters each in themselves provide shocking parts for the reader and all the chapters have some new piece of information to solve the puzzle of Silent Night 3. I highly recommend this to readers who like R.L. Stine Super Chillers, especially The New Year's Party, Silent Night and Silent Night 2.

Well . . .
Im going to make a short statement. Well first of all, I was full of excitement when the Silent Night books came out. . . but mainly for the covers, a crazed santa, a mob of evil model things. But was oh so dissappointed to find that this--like many of Stine's books--had no scary fictional beasts, merely a stupid kid. Although, I did enjoy the book, and suggest it to everyone. DO NOT BUY IT FOR THE COVER(S)! None of the juicy things the cover shows happends :(
