A++
A+The author in my opinion touches base on many issues including homeless street children, drugs, racism and a country on the verge of change. The book shows many examples on how the South African's rose to support Nelson Mandela and his views of restructuring a troubled nation. The books realism gives readers a chance to become familiar with life in South Africa. Sipho struggles are those of everyday people in this region of the world. I would recommend this book as one not to pass over. You can follow Sipho from being alone, threw new friendships and his hopes for a better tomorrow.
Out standingThe book is a boy named Sipho. Sipho is a young boy who runs away from his abusive stepfather to the life of the malunde (the street children of South Africa). The story takes place in apartheid S. Africa, right before the election of Nelson Mandela to Office. Sipho has to learn how to survive on the streets of Johannesburg, in a little outskirt called Hillsborough. Sipho gets lucky to make friends early on and find a clan to be able to help him in the way of the streets. Along the way Sipho meets a local shop owner in Hillsborough that gives him a job and a place to stay for a while. Sipho after commotion in the shop owner's house, Sipho runs away to a boy's shelter. The book has a cliffhanger ending that unless you read you will never find out what it is.

Ski WeekendSki Weekend is very scary, because the kids that were there were playing and suddenly a blizzard came. Some people even died.
This is a very good book to read alone or in a group in the dark. It would be appropiate in the winter in front of the fireplace.
Very good!!!

Myers frankly discusses the consequences of violence, drive-bys and gang war through his articulate characters, but tempers these episodes with such a love of his fictional community that every character shines through with the hope and strength of a survivor. Changing his point of view from teen to adult and back again through each vignette, Myers successfully builds a bridge of understanding between adolescents and adults that will help each group better understand the problems of the other. A worthy and recommended read that beautifully illustrates the good that can come out of a community that stands together. Newbery Honor-winning Myers has written more than 50 books, including Monster and Fallen Angels. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

The world on 145th street
Ten amazing stories. One book
The spirit of "the street" is alive in these talesMyers doesn't hold back in the presentation of some of the more horrific elements of life in the city. Though the book is not particularly graphic, the book mentions drug abuse, the sadness and pressures of poverty, and the inhumanity of a "drive-by".
But, the book is still uplifting in its portrayal of the familial bonds that dwell on the street as residents come together to assist each other with surviving the trials and tribulations of day to day life.
All of the selections are well-written and engrossing, with special note given to the humorous "Big Joe's Funeral", "The Streak", the touching "The Fighter", the tender "Kitty and Mack: A Love Story", the inspirational "The Christmas Story", and the poignant "Angela's Eyes".

Heart felt story of family, love, and the Christmas spirit
A lovely story, beautifully told, about family relationshipsIt's a beautifully written tale about how the people of New York City befriend, and in turn are befriended by, a family from rural Vermont. The father in the family comes to believe that his daughter has turned to 'city' values, and feels that she is no longer his best friend. In the end, the meaning of family and the holiday spirit is poignantly brought to light.
This book is very relevant to today's families because it talks to the misunderstandings, conflicts, and - ultimately - love, bonding parents and their children. (And it's so well written that I read it completely in one sitting.)
Christmas on Jane Street would be a great gift from a parent to a teen or adult child, or to anyone who believes in the holiday spirit of love and forgiveness...
i have met this family and visited them in greenwich village

HOW TO SUCKERPUNCHTo be fair, I must state for the record that I do not care for Sammy Franco or his enormous ego. I feel that he is arrogant, and not an effective instructor. His books reflect this. For an example of Sammy's arrogance, one need only refer to his "recommended reading" list at the end of this book -- every single book and article listed was written by Sammy Franco! Apparently, he feels that no-one else has ever written anything of significant value pertaining to this subject.
Sammy is big on "pseudospeciation." This is a fine multisyllabic word which he apparently heard a professor use while he was studying Criminal Justice at his local community college. Since big words make one appear to be intelligent, Sammy is sure to include this word at least several times in each of his books.
The illustrations are a joke. They consist of poor resolution computer images which appear to have been constructed on an Atari 400, as well as photographs of Sammy acting out his fantasy he-man scenarios versus compliant mannequin-like opponents unable to resist the power of machismo. He seems to be fond of prancing about in spandex bike shorts. In the final photo, Sammy uncomfortably poses with his German Shephard (at arm's length) while puffing on a stogie -- tobacco smoke irritates K9s and interferes with training as well as bonding.
If you happen to be a fan of Sammy's work, "First Strike" is more of the same. If you are a serious martial artist who is unfamiliar with his work, I'd advise you to pass it by -- there are other authors out there who do a much better job of presenting the same sort of material.

"'Tis the season . . . to die."While the previous two Silent Night books switched point of views between Reva and other characters, "Silent Night 3" zeroes in on Reva a little more, of her acting like her usual snobby self--stealing boyfriends and stabbing people in the back, so to speak. Out of the three books, this is my least favorite. It's not as suspenseful as the others until around the end; and even then, there are too many unbelievable plot twists to make "Silent Night 3" very enjoyable. You can probably skip this one and not feel guilty about it.
Tense thriller that builds its characters well.
Well . . .
