This is is your best place to start PERIOD!
I started riding streetluge after seeing this exciting sport on T.V. and I figured I could just build a 'luge and go. I went that route and I was wrong, I had a dangerous machine and no idea of the safety issues involved and was injured. After one of the top pro's told me about this book I went out and bought it and have never looked back. This book has all the information about the sport of streetluging that you will need to get started the right way. And it covers all aspects of the sport from building your 'luge to riding technique and picking roads & safety equipment. If you have any questions this book will answer them. Consider this as THE BEST resource a beginner can have (And even some of the experianced riders I know could benefit from going back and re-reading this book) So if you are getting started or just thinking about it, get this book and you wont be sorry. It set me on the road to riding in national level events and competing with the same guys I had only seen on T.V. before.

If your thinking about trying Streetluge...get this book.
I am new to the sport, racing now only a little over one year. I have, however, been in the X-games in San Francisco, and will be again in this years 2000' event. I'm coming off a second place position in the Red Bull DHX in South Africa and am looking forward to a great season racing streetluge. I have read this book cover to cover more than once. It has helped me ride safely and faster and answered questions that, lets face it, most people don't know the answers to. Whether or not you want to ride in competitions, or just want to have a ton of fun on the street, this book will help you learn about set-up, safe riding, road selection, buying a luge, wheels, trucks, competitions etc... Most importantly.... the book may well save some skin on needless mistakes you might make. Have Fun!

Essential for anyone who wants to Luge
Simply a "must read" for anyone who wants to luge, wants to learn about luge or is curious about this extreme sport. Well written by someone not only knowledgable about the sport, but able to teach it from the basics to the expert level.

With Walk the Dark Streets, author Edith Baer continues the story of the Bentheim family she began in A Frost in the Night. In this sequel, Baer, herself a survivor of the Holocaust, chronicles the life of Eva, a child of bourgeois Jewish parents in the fictional German town of Thalstadt during the early years of World War II. Eva slowly becomes aware of the Nazi threat as her family's rights and privileges are methodically and relentlessly taken away. Her father's bookstore is closed because he will not agree to carry Nazi propaganda, and her grandfather is no longer welcome in the neighborhood tavern where he only recently had been surrounded by friends. At school, Eva is banished to the back of the class and excused from "Aryan Folk and Race Science" lessons. Even as a romance begins to blossom between Eva and Arno, a talented young violin player, she is constantly reminded of Hitler's presence as her friends and extended family members desperately try to flee Germany. "Now it seemed hardly more than a dream that they had ever walked these streets with their arms around each other and with their ... childish hopes, the sun on their faces and death a stranger no one knew." Because of her father's lingering illness, Eva's parents wait until the last possible moment before sending their daughter out of the country alone with the hope that she will survive. Told as only a survivor could, Walk the Dark Streets is a compelling and valuable addition to Holocaust literature. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

Okay for some kids!
I read this book when I was 13. I am now 14. I understood this book and its message, and did not find it unsettling. However, people older than me can appreciate it as well. It is a beautifully written book that does not hide the pain and hardship of this time in history.

Recommended For Jews and non-Jews alike!
Two thumbs up! This book was a positive influence on me, being Orhtodox Jewish. It was also a positive influence on my best friend who is Christian. The story is perfectly set following one girl through her troubles of WWII.

A gentle,haunting story about a violent time
The reader is brought back to the terror filled days and months that engulfed the Jewish community as the full impact of Nazi power became apparent - a gradual, relentless process that escalates suddenly with Kristallnacht. As the day to day events unfold, the reader is swept up in the personal terror and loss that each of the characters feel. It is a wrenching, beautifully written story. Older teens and adult readers alike will be captured by this book.

It takes awhile to get going but then it is very good!
Henni and her neighborhood friends, Zev, Danielle, Frank, andBriquette, are very sad when their neighbor Old Auntie Lilliedies. Old Auntie Lillie's apartment gets "the treatment" and is completely transformed, making Henni and her friends wonder who is moving there anyway. The new neighbors arrive and immediately they decide to call them the Phonies because they aren't who they seem to be. The Phonies complain about EVERY LITTLE THING and it is driving everyone crazy. This is a very funny and interesting book and there is no way you can stop in the middle and forget about it. Everyone should read it.

A really great book!
I am 12 years old and when I first read this excellent book I was 10. I have been re-reading it on and off for two years! Elizabeth Honey's brilliant detective/comedy novel is a wonderful recipe of humour, adventure, neighbourhood struggles and wild airport chases. The book had me laughing from the first page and I couldn't put it down down. The book is chock-full of likeable/evil/funny characters and Henni's narrative style is chatty and easy. The sequel, 'Fiddleback', is also wonderful, and at times it touches your heart.A must for any reader!

The Greatest Book Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Elizabeth Honey is a fantastic writer. I love all of her books but this 45 & 47 Stella Sreet and everything that happened is the best. I just bought the sequel Fiddle-Back and I can't wait to read it. Anyway, 45 & 47 Stella Street is about a girl named Henni. Along with her sister, Danielle, friends Zev and Frank they set out to stop the Phonie's, the new posh and evil people in the street. This book will make you wet your pants with laughter. I think that this book is the best and I say you should read it.

Very entertaining
The novel is an interesting story about a man's experiences in the financial industry and his struggles with himself given the ethics of that industry. The author does an excellent job of explaining basic financial concepts so that the reader gets an education in that world, and this makes the book more interesting.

What an incredible read!
This book has it all--terrific locations, love, sex, and greed, with a main character--Nick Larson--that you just have to root for as he struggles with right and wrong. The author hits the nail on the head with the backroom shenanigans of the financial market. He clearly knows the ins and outs of the financial world. The story portrayed could easily be tomorrow's headline.

An outstanding debut by Keith Merritt!
Blue Street is a new kind of poetry, sure to please most any reader! Keith has a style all his own. Poem after poem, you'll be
pleased. Love and emotion are perfectly "bottled up" into book form and masterfully written along each page.
I recommend this wonderful book of poetry!

New Poetry for a new Millennium!
Keith Merritt has taken a vanguard step by drawing on the full spectrum of emotions in his book "Blue Street". In it, the poetry will astound even the most emotionally hardened reader, and prove that his is the standard by which all others must be measured up to in the 21st century!

Blue Street is definitely different!!
Blue Street is not your average book of poetry. I read the entire book in one sitting. The more I read, the better it got. The poems in Blue Street portray the progression from youth to maturity with feelings you can relate to. I especially liked the poems on pages 109, 123, 125, 135, 137 and 145 on through to the end!

You will read all night
"Cheerleaders: The First Evil" is the book that got me hooked on Mr. Stine. I remember reading this book as a 7th grader. The imagery and vivid descriptions kept me hooked all through the series. These are my favorite Fear Street books by far. I don't know how many times I have read this series since 7th grade and I am 17 now. I highly recomend this series. I don;t really know how to describe it other then to say this series is completely different from his other novels. Read the first couple chapters of "The First Evil" and you will be hooked. These are my favorite from when I used to collect R.L.Stine novels. The stories stay with you.

READ THIS BOOK!!
One day, my friend came up to me and said, "Read this book." and she let me borrow her copy of Cheerleaders: The First Evil. I didn't think I'd like it. Then I read it and it led me to read The Second Evil and The Third Evil. I liked it so much! You really need to read this book! They say cheers that I've never heard before. I think boys and girls alike will like this book!

Best Ever!
All these books are wonderful! Corky is a very beliveable character. I coudn't put them down.

Manhattan Images Must Have
This is my latest favorite photography book. I have a large collection that includes many with Manhattan as subject. The images captured by Levitt are stunning and the binding of the book itself is wonderful.

Taking Time To Look Around
Helen Levitt is not one of those New Yorkers who look neither to the left or right as they travel the streets of the city. This is a book about life. The neighborhoods she shoots are generally poor ones, yet we see people that are involved; people who are actively engaged in life even when they seem to be doing nothing. Her subjects -often children- play, they love, they communicate, they are lost in thought, and occasionally are sleeping.

A fine sense of humor permeates many of the scenes. Some subjects are caught in contorted, puzzling positions. We see the incongruous position of objects: an old 33rpm record in the street; a pair of shoes sitting by themselves on a sidewalk; three chickens wandering around a decrepit room -where did they come from? A mother's head is buried in the bottom of a baby buggy while the tyke yelps with joy. A dog is caught in the act of mistaking his owner's leg for a fire hydrant while she talks to a friend.

In general HL catches the warm side of humanity. Only a couple of pictures look like they were taken from a file of Jacob Riis (a 19th century photographer of New York tenement life). There was one particularly sad shot of a woman and her three children sitting on their front steps. They are obviously impoverished. The two youngest children seem quite content, but the mother seems weighed down with her life, and in the teen-age daughter we see the beginning of lost hopes.

This book is a must for anyone interested in street photography. It will take you a long time to get through this book as each photograph will hold your attention for some time.

A classic book of street photography
Helen Levitt's name is less well known than some of her images of New York street life. Perhaps that is the way she would wish it since she seems to have never sought fame. The book is as reticient as she and there is little commentary, but in truth little is necessary though I would love to know more about her and her work. This is a beautifully printed, organized and designed book and it was a pleasure to spend hours looking at the photographs. Often it was difficult to turn the page because each image is so compelling and resonates on many different levels. In a way, they are the perfect street images; they have the look of a snapshot but are so much more than that. Though they are all of New York they have a universal quality and speak about the truth of people's lives in a profound way. I admired the formal qualities of the photographs but what resonates most is the deep humanity of what she does, what she sees and records. It sometimes seems to me that photographers, in their quest for a good images, treats subjects with a level of distain and distance that is uncomfortable and ultimately manipulative. Crosstown is nothing like that and even when the photos are funny, and several are, they are funny in a very human way. There is nothing saccharine or trite in her work either and she has a great gift of photographing children without slipping into cuteness. I am a photographer and I treasure this book. I would certainly recommend it to others interested in photography, but I thinks its' appeal extends to anyone interested in the human condition and how we relate to one another.

A special piece of history
Dream Street will not win you over with its elegant aesthetics or even with "decisive moments," as might the work of other famous photographers. This is more like the kind of photography that Robert Penn Warren or Edgar Lee Masters might have created if they took pictures. Smith is a humanist whose pictures reveal the fabric of the lives of everyday people. My favorite pictures include the grimacing zoning commissioners and the hopeful faces of young veterans. Smith complements his photographs of people with compelling landscapes that show how people and machines interacted in this unique industrial ecosystem.
The pictures come with a text that explains the unusual story behind the creation of this essay. Like a few other geniuses, Smith was not adept at meeting the demands of his mortal peers. The original impetus for this work came from Life Magazine, who asked for a short term assignment about the region. Smith missed his deadline and ended up staying on to make pictures for several years! A set of galley layouts reveal the way that Smith conceptualized the important parts of his work, from sections such as "money and commerce" to "alone in the city." The text explains how his vision was compromised by the format of magazines. Even when more than 80 images were finally published with Smith's edit in Popular Photography, the photographer still viewed the result as a failure. The reader of this book will see that Smith was wrong about his efforts. Instead, this pictures make a great historical document about the life of a city.

Astounding
Simply astounding. As a former Pittsburgher I was familiar with the locations of Smith's photos and with much of the genre of Pittsburgh related documentary photography. (Smith was doing this work in PGH when my father was an undergrad at Pitt, so it is also nice to get another look at that era).

But, you should not own this book for sentimental reasons. You should own it because it is simply some astonishingly vivid B&W photography. (See also Robert Frank's The Americans. These folks were utterly in charge of their craft and working all on their own.) An amazing rush to look at, Smith's photos make you to get out your camera bag and get to work. It totally reenergized my own B&W work.

Wonderful, especially if you can't see the gallery
The Pittsburgh project gallery (shown in Pgh and other cities this year) is a fantastic display of nearly 200 prints that comprise one of the most important works of a great photographer. While reproductions hardly do justice to most fine prints, I recommend this book as a companion to the show, as well as a way to view the work if you are not able to see the gallery at one of the few cities in which it appears. I grew up in Pittsburgh, though long after these shots were taken. It is a spectacular look at mid-century Pittsburgh, and mid-century America.

Great intro to Wall Street for the college grad.
As a recent graduate, I lacked the historical knowledge needed to excel when dealing with people who have worked in finance since the turn of the twentieth century. If I had not read this book it would have taken me a long time to grasp how our economy evolved through hostile takeovers, the savings & loans scandal, insider trading, and the dot-com boom and bust. Never before had I heard the names Michael Milken and F. Ross Johnson; nor had I understood the power of J.P. Morgan and the influence he and The Street had on the growth of the United States. This is a must read for anyone getting into finance.

Excellent! A must read for any investor
I completed this 369 page "story book" in two days. It had been so interesting that I just could not put it down.

It's no exaggeration to regard it as a story book. Somehow the reality is more harsh and crueler than fictitious TV drama and movies, and the history of the investment world is surely no exception.

Back to the book. This is in fact an excellent collection of writings from books, journals amd newspapers of different witnesses to the author's selection of major debacles of the past four centuries. There are twelve parts of unequal period, with a timeline of critical incidents in the beginning of each part, followed by selected witness reports as mentioned above. Certainly, not everything could be accounted detailedly (so I would like to recommend "Devil Take the Hindmost: A History of Financial Speculation by Edward Chancellor", a book that dug deeper but not as wide) but readers certainly would have a very correct idea of what went wrong.

As a CFA charterholder (not yet, passed all three levels of exam but not paid the fees), I strongly recommend AIMR to put this book into the required list of reading to warn its members of the limitation of the financial techniques or theories or calculations or integrity stuff we try to preach. Anyway, a must read for anyone, especially serious players!

p.s. One minor drawback: Soros was not there. He should have been.

see the brilliance of wall street's greats
this book gives you a window look into the brilliance of wall streets finest players , as well as the big scammers. this book gave me a better knowledge of how the market works and how the economic cycle is always repeating itself. it gave you a nice history into how wall street was established and how it evolved into the market it is today.

A Dance in the Street
Charles Shea LeMone's novel has everything a good detective story needs: an original plot with clues given along the way; an intelligent protagonist that we grow to care about; quirky and not-to-be-trusted suspects; and a love interest. His unique way of unifying the events, places, and people of his story create a seamless pattern that cannot be simply summed up.

Another thing that I like about this author is how he describes his characters. He gives insight into them without being tedious. LeMone seems to relish the agony and the ecstasy that he puts his main character through. At once brooding and yet sensual, Solomon Priester is an articulate and cynical young man. He is searching for answers ~ in his life as well as in this strange case that he feels compelled to involve himself. A poetry-spouting young woman, one more fare in the middle of the night in the middle of the city places our main character in a dangerous mix of cops, illicit sex, and money.

The result is a fun and speculative read!

A Dance You Won't Forget
I read this book a couple of years ago and was totally swept into the character Solomon Priester's life. He cruises the streets of LA while moonlighting as a cabbie. When he's questioned by the police about the murder of his last fare- a young woman & phone-sex operator- he's intrigued and takes the case on himself. Despite being harassed, threatened, discredited, roughed up, vandalized, shot at, etc. he ultimately unravels the case. What puts this story a cut above others is the author's vivid imagery, articulate sensitivity, and humorous style.

A really fun read!
I totally enjoyed this surprise-filled mystery that took me right out of my 9-5 life and deep into the sinister underworlds of L.A. The writing is vivid, the characters are originals, the dialogue and situations crackle with intensity... The main character, Priester, is an engaging and fascinating private detective wanna-be with a poetic nature whom you will love to go along on the ride with... I highly recommend this book!
