Many levels of fun and learning
My son loves this book. There is a matchbox model of a streetsweeper that accompanies the book. He holds the sweeper while we read the book. There is a simple rhyming repetition on each page which is fun to read. The story tells how the sweeper cleans up after a street fair. It also shows the different parts of the sweeper and the child can find them on the sweeper model. The back page is for parents, and offers suggestions of how to look for different shapes as you go through the book, as well as around your home surroundings. I highly recommend this book, but you must be very observant of your children if they are under 3, because of the small parts on the sweeper.

Must Read
I've been reading a lot of books about personal finance and the markets, and Levitt's is my favorite. He explains technical concepts in simple terms that are understandable to the average person. His stories about his years as SEC chairman wonderfully illustrate his points. If you insist on believing that basic intergrity prevails on Wall Street and in corporate America, don't read his book. As Levitt so ably demonstrates, it's like believing in the Easter bunny.

This book gives powerful examples on how prayer transforms lives and communities. Somtimes Christians tend to underestimate the power of prayer can have on the world. This book gives you some practical ideas on how to get started with your prayerwalking adventures.

An important contribution
For anyone who is seriously interested in all aspects of the Graffiti Culture, Joe Austin pulls it all together in this scholarly, but easily readable, excellently researched new book.
The author has spent the necessary time to know many of the important writers, to review the major material written in the last thirty years and to organize it in a way that helps the reader develop a more comprehensive understanding of this unique art form. "Taking the Train" joins a very select list of books that make up the "Graffiti Book Hall of Fame"

The lyrical novel still lives!!!
Wow! When I sat down to read "Talbott Street" I was more than a bit concerned that the novel would be too dark for my typical summer reading. After all, it is a story told at the bedside of a banker-turned-poet dying of AIDS. And yet, it captured me, and my wife, immediately. The novel unfolds through a series of flashbacks alternating with chapters at the dying man's bedside. As he sleeps, his longtime friends tells us how they both came to this point. By using the dying man's journal entries, ditties and poems, and with some astounding dialogue, we slowly come to understand the twenty-year friendship. But it's a friendship with a twist since the narrator telling the story is straight and the dying man is gay - or bisexual. They meet in college, separate, are reunited five years later, remain together for a year in Indianapolis and then part under brutally difficult circumstances for eight years until the dying man asks his friend to return to help him die. I can't say too much more without giving the surprise away, but there is a love triangle (straight), a murder, and in the end, hope for redemption. But it's the language that makes the novel. Hayes has a knack for the poetical rendering and phrase, and in fact an appendix to the novel contains poems (I'm assuming written by Hayes himself)which are attributed to the dying man. Talbott Street is a bar, the place of a murder, a painting, a London address - and well, a symbol for change. A must read. A lyrical tour de force!!!

The Original Mean Streets
"Down these mean streets a man must go," wrote Raymond Chandler on the subject of the detective novel. Few knew he was paying tribute to another writer, now almost forgotten, who wrote about the mean streets of London's Docks around 1900. In TALES OF MEAN STREETS, CHILD OF THE JAGO, and THE HOLE IN THE WALL, Arthur Morrison wrote about the world into which he was born. (Interestingly, he also wrote some great detective novels at the same time that Doyle was writing his Sherlock Holmes stories.)

Some of the stories in TALES OF MEAN STREETS seem sentimental today: There is no lurid sex, the cursing is subject to the "code" of Queen Victoria's day, and much of the violence takes place off stage. If you accept the givens of that day, you will enjoy Morrison; and you will see how the American detective novel and the film noir owe far more to Morrison than to Conan Doyle or anyone else. Morrison deserved to be remembered and honored.

Amazing First Hand Experience of Wall St. in the 1860s
I rated this book 5 stars because it is 'right up my alley', as someone who has an interest in US History and especially the stock market.

If you aren't knowledgable about the stock market, you probably wouldn't understand a lot of it.

But if you are interested in the History of the Stock market, 5 stars isn't enough for this historical gem.
