A brilliant read for users and non-users alike
This book takes no moral stand on the issue of legal and illegal drug use. It rather lays out the facts and dispells myths. Of all the literature I have read, this comes closest to describing the drug experience. Parents, if you are worried that your children are using, throw out D.A.R.E.'s ill-intentioned propaganda and pick up Tyler's well-researched work. Users - before you try the next thing, read the chapter in this book, and your experience promises to be that much safer and more fulfilling. This is a _great_ work, worthy of more praise than I can heap upon it.

A must buy if you have the game
This book is amazing in how it helped me play the game. When I first played the game, I thought "What is this? Why is it so slow?" After achieving all the secret characters, I decided to see if I missed anything by looking at this book at my local book store. I first turned the page to my favorite character, Kairi, and found tons of stuff I didn't even know he could do. The book has colored pictures which adds a nice touch. It tells you each character's momentary combos which is very helpful. It tells you all of the meteor tag team moves which is a good thing so you don't have to go through a guess and check method of finding tag partners. The book also shows you several tag combos (not meteor tag team moves) that looks cool while doing major damage. It gives you all the secrets. Finally, the most helpful thing I found in this book was how it gives excellent strategies on how to use every character and the amazing, super cool combos that you would think never could've happen judging by the speed of the game.

Once again, this book is a must buy if you have the game. Without this book, the game is just a slow lifeless game that seems as if it were rushed through just to meet the launch of the PS2.

Street Foods: Urban Food and Employment in Developing Countries
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr on Demand (February, 1997)
Author: Irene Tinker
Amazon base price: $50.00
Used price: $28.50
Average review score:

Essential reading re food practices in developing countries
Irene Tinker is a feminist pioneer in the field of international development: the research policy center she founded in Washington, D.C., the Equity Policy Center (EPOC), was one of the first to attend to the different needs and concerns of women in international development circles. Her orientation towards improving the lives of women in developing countries is clear in her recent book, Street Foods: Urban Food and Employment in Developing Countries. Street Foods describes a series of studies, sponsored by EPOC, of vendors selling street foods in seven towns and cities in Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Bangladesh, Egypt, Senegal, and Nigeria. Tinker starts with a number of questions:

Looking at this entrepreneurial activity through a development lens, I wondered: Do the women and men selling the foods make a good living? Why do women dominate the trade in Nigeria or Thailand, but hardly a woman can be seen selling food in Bangladesh? Why, if street food is so popular, do many governments embark on street cleaning exercises, destroying stalls and confiscating supplies? (p. 3).

Some of her answers are surprising. For example, in some cities, vendors made more money than "middle class" job holders, such as civil servants or teachers. Street foods make a significant contribution to the diets of people in the study countries, particularly to the diets of schoolchildren. In Ziguinchor, Senegal, the average amount of peanuts purchased by children provided nearly two-thirds of their protein requirement. In many countries, it is cheaper to buy street foods than to cook at home, because of the high cost of fuel and the efficiencies associated with cooking in large batches.

In meticulous detail, Tinker describes each of the seven studies in Part I of the book, including a brief economic and political outline of each country, an overview of each city (including maps), and a description of the vendors and the foods they sell. Mouth-watering recipes for two typical foods per country are also included. For each country, Tinker shows how cultural attitudes affect what foods are sold and eaten, by whom, and when. Part II, she turns to development theory and practice, particularly the economics of street foods, nutritional and safety aspects of the food, and implications for research, planning and policy. The robustness of the data allow comparisons across countries of the similarities and differences among street vendors, including demographic and gender variations.

Like other feminist research, the seven studies were not just descriptive, but included an action component as well. The results of the studies showed the significant economic, cultural and nutritional benefits of street foods and have helped to change the policies and practices of muncipal and national governments, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). In many of the study cities, city officials no longer harass or fine the street vendors but provide training instead, modelled on EPOC training programs that provided education about food safety and vendor health.

This book is essential reading for anyone planning research or intervention programs involving urban food practices in developing countries. More generally, it is an exemplar of how research that starts from the realities of people's lives can inform policy and practice to make a difference in those lives.

Practical, entertaining, and generally cool
If you are looking for a book that will unravel the mysteries of the everyday French language, look no further. Street French 2 goes far beyond the standard idiomatic translations, even including practice puzzles and exercises. I would recommend it to those who are already very familiar with the language but would like to improve their overall knowledge of conversational French. It is not a book for beginners.

The reality of living a life of service
Street Journal is written from the personal diary Father Smith kept while the Director of Nativity House, a daytime drop-in centre for the street people of Tacoma, Washington's skid row. In this inspiring book, he shares personal stories of the people who frequented the centre as well as the day-to-day experiences of staff at Nativity House. For some, like me, who may harbour romanticized notions of working with the poorest of the poor, this book is a real eye-opener. The centre is often frequented by those who are dirty, have lice, are junkies, alcoholics, prostitutes, pimps and ex-convicts or fugitives, some of whom can be mean and/or violent. The depth of love, compassion and empathy that Father Smith and his staff have for these people is felt throughout the book. This is also the story of Father Smith's spiritual growth during this time. He is remarkably candid in describing how his interaction with these people changed not only many of their lives but his as well. Read this book and discover what it means to have a true heart of charity.

A simple, yet pleasurable memoir that tells the truth
These days, its hard to find a good, clear representation of the Italian-American situation of the past century. We are bombarded today by the typical "mafia/gangster" stereotype of Italian men and, thus, making it seem like all Italian men of the 20th century were like this, exhibiting this ultimate lack of respect for human life and integrity. However, in Cianci's simple and genuine autobiography, which tells the story of his early days on the street and his gradual emergence from destitution, we get a different look at this minority group and the men that define its existence. We are presented with a man, the author, that, through his experiences and his interactions with others, brings back the long-lost dignity and integrity of the represented Italian-American persona and its way of life.
Throughout the text, the "street" evolves to ultimately stand as a metaphor for this journey we willingly take with the author through his life. Cianci points out that the "street" - or the group of ideals that allowed one to survive the "street" environment - always remains with you - it essentially becomes a part of you. And though the street has its dark sides - its crudeness, its pervading racism, its reliance on degradation in the face of attempted survival - we are also presented with its light sides, its values: the love of family, the joy of community, and the exaltation of freedom. Cianci's book is not only a wonderful achievement in its truthful representation of early 20th century Philadelphian streetlife, but an even grander achievement for present-day Italian-American writing. An essential read for the Italian-American culturist.
