This book is still widely read in England. I was introduced to it while a student at Oxford University, and found it stunning. I now live in my native U.S.A., and have reread it to great effect. Compton-MacKenzie's great talent is creating the moods of life: the scenes of Oxford are the definitive in a long line of genre attempts at the same. The book was widely read for nearly half a century, and was in print for that long, with reissues happening periodically therafter. The life of Michael Fane is the life of a kind of sensitive, English upper-class Everyman. The dialogue is wonderful, all the inner life narrated is accessible and sympathetic. It remains a favorite among most who have read it.

I purchased this book so that I could help one of my high-intermediate students understand American slang. I have been nothing but pleased with this book and have used it with several of my students. THE GOOD: Each chapter has about 10 new slang words (or phrases) to really concentrate on. The pictures are hilarious and help the students to relax and have fun as they get started on each chapter. After introducing the words, the book then incorporates them into a delightful dialogue. Each chapter also has a section entitled "A closer look at 'real speak'." This is my favorite feature and helps students to understand how American slang is really produced. For example, it explains when a "T" is really pronounced like a "D" (or flapped). The rest of the chapter then has TONS of practice for the students in all four skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking. THE BAD: There really isn't too much to say here. If anything I would say that the book doesn't cover a lot of slang words. There are only 10 chapters, so students really only learn somewhere around 100 new words and phrases, but they really learn those 100! The only other bad thing that I have noticed is that my more advanced students seem to pick up the slang more quickly and then find the remaining practice to be redundant. But hey, it could be worse! OVERALL: A wonderful book of current and useful American slang that I would recommend to anyone - teacher, tutor or student! I would suggest that you buy the cassette tapes if you are going to use this book as a self-study guide.

David Kent was an amateur actor and as a child actor took part in Orson Wells radio show War of the Worlds that scared listeners of a Martian invasion. He was a consumate Borden Scholar and insisted in writing only true facts. His book "40 Whacks" is a classic. David died before publication of his book and play. The book is a hardcover limited edition.

The Sleuth of St. James Street is a great mystery Thriller by Clarksburg West Virginia native and author Melville Davisson Post.It's highly recommended!!

Anna lives in Rome with her father and she notices that she doesn't have a mother. She tries to ask her father, but no answer. Her father Stephan is poor and lives out in the streets with Anna. She has a friend, which she tells secrets to. Until the end of the book, she knows what happened to her mom, and they live happily ever after! It is a COOL BOOK!

I loved this book. Goodwin's profound, genuine prose spoke to my soul.

With today's new developements there might be more (new) interurbans in America, but up to now the South Bend is the last Interurban. This book tells us all we need to know: the (sometimes reallly entangled) history of the CSS&SB, how she was renewed by Mr. Insull; how she survived until today. The book desribes the South Bend's history in depth - and very readably, it includes a wealth of photos. One of the pix I enjoyed most is one of a 1980's Interurban riding thru an Indiana town - beautiful.

This is such a interesting guide book!! I got this book from my christmas gift about nearly 2 months ago. Then I started to like it!! This book has everything about space, including the solar system, stars and galaxies, the space history, star charts and lots more!! It sure tests your knowledge!! It's even easy read and it includes lots of color pictures and photos!! This book is 318 pages long. So if you're interesed in space, get it!

Barry Spacks' poetry is stridently open to the great adventuresome problem of life.

If you enjoy writing that's accessible but also challenging, poetry that's funny without being cute, poetry that's emotive without being maudlin, then Spacks' poetry is for you. His voice is one of our wisest and most humane.

Robert R. Owens gives a wonderful overview of the Pentecostal movement. He traces the events that led to or helped produce the 1906 Azusa outpouring and then presents a detailed history of the 1906-1909 Azusa Street Revival.
