new twist on old favorites
This book is great! The stories are similar to the "classic" fairytales I grew up with, but each has its own fun and unique "sesame street twist". The pictures are funny and colorful. I'm not sure who enjoys it more...my 14 month old or me!

Just what I was looking for!
We're planning a special New Year's Eve celebration at our house and I was looking for a book to read at bedtime with my three-year-old to prepare her for the festivities. She and I enjoyed sharing this book. It's not too long for bedtime and it highlights celebrations around the world, which is nice. With the millenium craze, I would recommend this book to parents of preschoolers looking to explain what the fuss is all about.

My son loves this book!
My son, at 15 months, doesn't say much yet, but Elmo is one of his first words. He loves this book. He loves most flap books, but combine it with Elmo and it's a dream come true. There are lots of flaps to open and lots of learning is available if you read it/look at it with your child. There are shapes, opposites and letters. It really is a cute book!

Sharks (Little Guides)

I LOVE THESE GUIDES!...
I am completely delighted with "The Little Guides" series. The format is extremely user friendly, and each guide is packed with useful and interesting information. I enjoy reading them, but my 6 year old daughter gives them the most use. While the guides are written at an adult level, there is plenty that she can read and understand. I currently own "Sharks," "Birds," "Mammals," and "Space," and have ordered "Reptiles," "Whales," and "Flowers."

"Sharks" is divided into three parts; the first includes topics on the world of sharks, shark behavior, and shark anatomy. Shark anatomy is very informative, covering such topics as the shark's skeletal system, gills, teeth, etc. Part two covers a wide variety of sharks (about 100 different species), and part three covers shark and human interaction, including shark attacks, the human threat to sharks, and where to observe sharks. The guide is extremely well done, with over 500 colorful illustrations.

This is a great resource of adults as well as children!

A rollicking good time!
My 4 year old son and 1 year old daughter absolutely adore this book. The baby hands it to me and starts dancing before I even get the first page turned. It's lots of fun to sing and has become a family staple.

Shenandoah in Flames

Phil Sheridan makes his reputation in the Shenandoah Valley
"The Shenandoah in Flames," which looks at Phil Sheridan's Valley Campaign of 1864 makes a nice counterpart to "Decoying the Yanks," the earlier volume in the Time-Life Civil War series covering Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign. Jackson pops up in the opening pictorial essay that talks about the Virginia Military Institute, where Jackson was an instructor. "The Valley Imperiled" tells how General Grant decided to move Union forces into the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 to force the Confederates to defend the state's richest farmland. Unfortunately, the commander of the Union forces, Major General Franz Sigel, who had risen to his rank because of politics rather than ability, and who was beaten by Gen. John C. Breckenridge's forces at the Battle of New Market. "'Black Dave's' Orgy of Fire" details the efforts of Sigel's replacement, Major General David Hunter, who had to abandon his attack on Lynchburg and almost lost the Union's hold the Valley. "To the Gates of Washington" finds Confederate commander Jubal Early try to put pressure on the Union capital after forcing Lew Wallace's outnumbered troops to retreat from their defensive position behind the Monocacy River. "I Want Sheridan" obviously tells how Grant finally found the right man for the job, placing the commander of the Army of the Potomac's Cavalry Corps, Major General Philip Sheridan, in command of the four departments in the area. Sheridan proved his worth at the battle of Winchester. "Showdown at Cedar Creek" provides the historical context for the cover picture of Sheridan on his great horse Renzi rallying his troops after a surprise Confederate counterattack, which ended up being the last gasp of the Rebels in the Valley Campaign. When I was young I read a book called "Blow, Bugle, Blow," which told the story of a young Union shoulder who took part in Sheridan's Valley Campaign, so I especially enjoyed reading the "true story" of that event. The back of this volume has a fascinating set of contemporary artwork by James E. Taylor, a artist-correspondent for "Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper." These are reproduced with the original blue tinting, accompanied by Taylor's narrative of the Cedar Creek battle. Like all of the Time-Life Civil War volumes this won is illustrated from start to finish with historic paintings, etchings, and drawings as well as maps of the pivotal battles. I have had this series for years and I still enjoying looking through these volumes from time to time. The episodic approach, where a volume can focus on a particular campaign or battle like this, can be quite effective.

Changed My Life!!
I originally bought this book back in '94 after reading a review in Smart Money Magazine. It literally took me out of investing in mutual funds and working a dead in job into a six figure yearly income within a few months of practice. Some of his methods are a little outdated because it was written in '94. With the advances that have taken place with the internet it is so much easier to implement his strategy. It is also much cheaper since back then I used to pay through the nose for news feeds and comissions. The book is very easy to read and understand and is very motivational. I still read it every now and then just as to get a little "pump me up" before I start a trading week. I'm surprised that it is no longer available or there hasn't been an updated edition. I read quite a few books on trading and still have yet to read one that has such a simple strategy that actually works better than anything else I have seen. If you can find a copy of this book get it! It will definitely change the way you think about the stock market. Wherever you are Gerald I owe you one.

a colorful glimpse
i don't really know much about photography. it has been an art i have always found interesting, but not something i have felt passionate about. when i saw this book in the gift shop of a museum i was instently captivated. each picture shows a compelling and colerful glimps into the personality of these people. i have never felt the nead for owning a book of photography before, but something about the way these pictures are taken struck my very profoundly.

The Very Best In VISUAL SOUP FOR THE SOUL!
I bought this book for a CHICANO/A studies course that I had and it really sank inside of me. It shows pictures of the beautiful murals that can be found in CALIFORNIA by some well known chicano/a muralists and others by popularly known organizations such as SPARC. Coincidentally SPARC which stands for SOCIAL PUBLIC ART RESOURCE CENTER are also the community artists that pained a 2, 435 foot long "GREAT WALL OF LOS ANGELES" which can be viewed at Coldwater Cyn and Oxnard St near Los Angeles Valley College. Very inspirational as well. These murals are also depicted in the book, but I recommend breathing in the life of the murals on your very own. It creates a sort of "ZEN" between you and history. Very powerful images!

It includes inspirational and pride-filling pictures from "CHICANO PARK" in San Diego, East Los Angeles Ramona Gardens MURALS, murals from BERKELEY, murals from freeway underpasses, and San Francisco. These of course are only a couple of localities, there are more. It is an empowering book that really lets you see what struggles the Latino people have had to overcome. It depicts scenes from earlier pre-colonial struggles to recent political views. It is a book that you will pick up and want to add to your collection. This is a 2nd copy that I own and thought that I would share the knowledge with others. It really makes you want to go out and see for yourself what beautiful pieces of art lay within the urban chaos that we live in.
