The Parlour and the Streets: Elite and Popular Culture in Nineteenth Century Calcutta
Published in Hardcover by South Asia Books (July, 1990)
Author: Sumanta Banerjee
Amazon base price: $26.50
Average review score:

An interpretation of aesthetic culture of subaltern groups
Few works have attempted to intrepret and explain aesthetic and artistic movements among poor and subaltern groups. By focusing on the development of rivalry of popular and elite culture in Calcultta, Banerjee's The Parlour and the Streets, was a groundbreaking work which posits how lower classes or castes mock the elite culture, and in turn create their own meaning. His interpretation of how elite culture responded to subaltern culture, by reinforcing its dinstiveness as in the choice of new bhadralok toward Western education. The originality of Banerjee's work is his explanation of how the elite in Calcutta managed to turn from an initial disdain and outright struggle with lower social groups into a hegemonic position in which the elite learned to expropriate, promote and expand folk culture as an apartheid system of cultural division. It is equally an antedote to Eurocentric theories of history and aesthetics as it is testament of the ability of subaltern groups to make their own history through resilience.

Excellent account related honsestly and candidly
I enjoyed reading Mrs. Kidd's book. I am currently a returning student at Florida State University and read this account for a class I'm taking regarding Mental Health for Women and Minorities. Mrs. Kidd's account was so very well written that I can imagine her sweet and genteel voice. I can also envision her standing up for her constituional rights at moments in her life that challenged her values and belief systems. I reccommend all people read this moving account in order to reach a higher level of cultural sensitivity and understanding for another race (I am white), as well as a viewpoint from an elder citizen, and memories as well as experiences and achievements for a woman living in a world of male domination. Mrs. Street Kidd's recollections are moving and very enlightening.

The book on trolleys in Colorado Springs
Written by Morris Cafky and John Haney, this is THE book on the history of the trolley systems that ran in Colorado Springs until 1932. Very well illustrated with contemporary photographs of the street cars in Colorado Springs and backed up by informative, well written text it shows the years of newspaper writing experience of Morris Cafky. According to the Pikes Peak Historical Street Railway Foundation, the book may soon be updated and back in print again.

Sesame Street Songs is a must for young Elmo fans
My 18 month old daughter has enjoyed this book since we first received it. It is one of her favorite "Elmo" books. It provides a fun way to spend quality time with our daughter. The only problem is if you don't know the songs, then it can be hard to figure out how to match the words to the tunes.

The Poet of Wall Street

A must buy for stock market enthusiasts!
These poems illustrate Nelson's expertise as a money manager, as well as his philosophy about various principles in this world. Anyone who is passionate about the stock market will love learning Nelson's insight into the world of Wall Street. Avoid the temptation to read the book quickly, however. Spend time pondering each poem. There is a lot of wisdom condensed into very few words. In my opinion, this book should be listed with Stock Market books as well as poetry books...a unique combination. A true gem!

A cynical view of the world of modern journalism
Although littered with 80's references which may trip up the reader at first, Pravda is the tale of an honest journalist who see's his profession debased through the growth of tabloids, the sensational shocking headlines and the British public's lust for sex, royalty and nationalism. Into this arena walks La Roux, cunning, devious and calculating, a very thinly veiled Murdoch his personality turns everyone towards him, controlling the worlds of royalty, sports, politics and at the end the world of journalism, forcing even the "hero" of the book to give up his honest journalistic instincts and start calling for smut.

An Unknown Gem
Well, it's a short book, so this is a short review. And judging by its Amazon ranking, I doubt anyone is reading this... But if you are, then hey, listen: "Princess" is a wonderful story. Wonderful in this case being "charmingly demented yet deeply moving." First half is told while she, our Princess, is manic, second half while she, our Princess, is depressive. But there's nothing depressing about the novel, in fact it is laughoutloud funny. So all in all an easy read, a rewarding read, and a superb, subtle ending. Quite... wonderful. Yeah.
