A beautiful story of friendship
I was doing an exhibit for the library where I work to celebrate diversity in children's books and came across this one. What a great (true) story of two friends and their days on hanging out on the streets of New York. The photos are excellent! They portray a wide range of emotions and responses the two boys share in their adventures. The way Vincent and Danny work through their disagreements with compassion and kindness is a lession we could all learn from. The fact that the boys are of different races matters little to these two. I can't say enough about this wonderful book.

Fantastic fiction.
I have just recovered from reading this novel of Sebastian Faulks. The tension that is created with the love affair in this book holds true right to the very last.

Set in America against the backgroud of the Cold war and the election of President Kennedy this story unfolds in a way that encompasses the mood of the era while allowing the characters room to breath.
The main character Mary begins the novel woth the "perfect" life. She has a loving husband with a top job in the embassy and two adoring children. As the pages fly by we learn that not all is well in Mary's life, her husband Charlie starts to lose his grip in a battle with the bottle. Her children are sent off to boarding school in England.

Mary becomes involved with a journalist called Frank and thus ensues a series of adulterous visits to New York where instead of "writing a book", Mary becomes smitten by her new lover.

The reader is left breathless as the plot comes to an end.. will Mary go for the greener grass or will she face up to her duties to her poor husband and her ever changing children ?

Neighborhood Social Breakdown
Mr. Williams examined Blane Street in Pittsburgh's Homewood area during the 1970s. He broke the Belmar section of Homewood into three distinct categories: Mainstream, Genuine and Spurreous. During the era of social unrest, Mr. Williams cited the stigmata of inferiority associated with black behavior that exists at any level of integration. Mr. Williams poignantly described the reality of neighborhood breakdown and how to rebuild that fabric. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in anthropology, neighborhoods, and the heritage of African Americans within the Pittsburgh area.

"The Politics of Printing Poetry"
If you ever wanted to enter the treasure troves of a rare manuscript collection, you can now become an arm chair traveller with James Sullivan's book that explores the "ephemera" of poetry broadsides. He analyzes the role of single-sheet poems, once passed out at rallies, peace marches, and other community events (and now carefully archived as historical documents) as a form of counter culture communication. Studying poems rising from the civil rights movement and war protests, Sullivan examines the social and economic context of these poetry "fliers" by famous and unknown poets, as well as their aesthetic design. He also provides background stories on the production process and collaborations between writers, artists, designers, and printers. Critiquing as well as celebrating this "grass roots" alternative press movement of poetry for the people and by the people, freed from the system of major commercial publishing houses, he authenticates a literary tradition that has otherwise disappeared into wastebaskets and library vaults. Started as a dissertation, this book is both scrupulously researched and highly readable, with excellent illustrations of this genre -- including works by Merwin and Ginsberg. The only book in the field that I've been able to find, it is a must for poets, poetry teachers, lovers of small press, aging hippies, and believers in art's humanitarian role in bringing change.

Great map of Queens
Not many good maps of Queens available. This one is as good as anything you'll find out there -- laminated, pocket-sized and set for tourist-type use. Only complaint: no subways on it. Also see LICNYC.com

Excellent color photography, comprehensive overview
As one of the muralists shown in this book, I feel very honored to have been included. The content of this book and intent of the author Robin Dunitz ranks up with any textbook of art history. California has always been home to artists who dare to dream and a public who appreciates those artists. The book is full of color reproductions on every page, includes the history of murals, and has interviews and observations by some very incredible artists who paint large, colorful, and thought provoking images. I highly recommend this book to all who are interested in art outdoors.

A Great Guide to Paris
After having enjoyed Michelin guides for years, I believe that this is a better buy. It contains much (if not all) of the same information in a layout that is easier to use and in a typeface that is easier to read. It takes you through sights, attractions, restaurants, and bars in a logical street by street manner. Saves lots of time in planning. I recommend it highly.

A Godsend for people with no sense of direction
I purchased this book prior to my trip to Paris. It contains detailed maps for most of popular areas of Paris, and also includes a little bit of information about the famous landmarks. I carried this book with me everywhere and it helped tremendously in finding every address I was looking for. Another nice thing about it is that it is small and easy to tote around. A must for anyone who gets lost easily!
