LifesaverWhen I moved to DE, relying on directions from natives was usually a bad idea--they'd lived here so long they all used landmarks (some of which no longer existed) to give directions. This map has yet to get me lost in 4 years of use. It lists both route names (which the natives use) and numbers (which the rest of us use.) Invaluable!

Tne new crowdThis is the best book about bankers I have ever read. It is not boring (as "Warburgs" by Chernov ) and it gives you the picture about almost all major financial companies created by Jews. Great book.

Visions of a vanishing time and placeThis wonderful book is the second in the now-classic survey of historic New Orleans architecture. Distinguished by the same painstaking attention to detail as the other volumes, this book concentrates on the sections of the city now known as the Central Busisness District (or CBD) and the Warehouse/Arts District. Given the dramatic changes this section has undergone since the 19th century, this volume is both more valuable historically and perhaps a bit less interesting to the casual reader.
One section of the book is fortunately out of date. A special section highlights the row houses on Julia Street in the Warehouse District, then in sad disrepair, but now gems in that area's redevelopment.
Despite the towering skyscrapers lining Poydras Street and the gleaming hotel towers down by the river, this book calls our attention to what remains: the exuberant architectural display of a Victorian bank building or the shockingly vibrant facade of a Canal Street storefront. Through its thoughtful scholarship and careful display of maps, historic images and contemporary photograph, this book (likes its sisters in the series) is an inviting glimpse into the past for the careful reader.

The Truth About Poverty and RacismJohn Cooper's Noble Street taught me more about America's race and poverty problems than any history book would ever dare try to. Noble Street is hysterically funny and frighteningly sad. Having read this book I am painfully aware of three things: American racism is uglier than our imaginations will allow us to believe, nobody can destroy a child like a parent, and no one can save a child like a parent. Mabel Scriven is a true American hero who proves that love and faith may not conquer racism and injustice, but they are definitely our best weapons against it. After reading Noble Street you will never again believe that poverty and familial disintegration solely result from the choices of their victims. John Cooper makes it clear that if people had this kind of choice, poverty would not exist in America.

What Conan Doyle failed to tellWhen a Stradivarius that was a gift from Peter the Second disapears, Shelock Holmes and Dr. Watson decide to travel to Brazil in order to unravel the mystery. The detective is not as sucessful in this story as he was in the tales of Conan Doyle, and the funny situations keep showing up in this delightful story by Jo Soares. You cannot miss this!

meticulously researched pre-revolution historical fictionJames Street writes meticulously researched historical fiction that introduces us to the daily lives of men and women who settled the United States, moving westward from the coastal areas. He includes encounters with Native Americans including historical characters who aided or impeded the settlers. The plot develops around a brother and sister orphaned by an Indian raid on their homestead and follows them through several generations with succeeding books including Tap Roots which was made into a movie in the forties or fifties. Street writes compasionately about the custom of indenture, relations between Native Americans and Africans, the struggles of ordinary people to establish a life on the frontier.
