Great Book!
I am thinking of building a glass 32 Ford and wanted to see if I had the knowledge, tools, and money to do it. After reading Caldwell's book I am convinced I can do it. It gives all the basic information on building your own rod in your garage. I read the book in just two nights and could not put it down.

A "must have" book on historic commercial architecture
Longstreth develops a usable classification system for 19th and 20th century commercial architecture, that works in real-world situations. Examples shown are ones that we've all seen on our own "Main Streets". This provides a useful basis for survey, evaluation, historic designation, rehabilitation, and other preservation decisions about historic commerical architecture.

Burke Street (Library of Conservative Thought)

Every House a History
One of the more alarming aspects of contemporary American life is the habit of tearing up roots. A home is considered merely a piece of real estate to be bought and sold to the highest bidder. One's history can be had for a price. Many Americans consider a house merely an investment to which they have a mechanical, impersonal attachment which can be severed easily for the sake of social climbing or monetary gain. The notion of upward mobility is foul enough without tossing an old, well-built home into the bulldozer.

But then I suspect that the American fallacy that cheapness is better has overtaken the craftsmanship of the well-built home. Edmund Burke warned that time means little to those who run up a building in haste. Lacking some sense of past and future, there is the danger of remaining infantile, having absorbed little experience and none of its lessons as well as the danger of being bored, for a world without associations, Moncrieff wrote, would be flat and meaningless.

Burke is never mentioned in this book by George Scott-Moncrieff, man of letters, except as the name of a street in Edinburgh, Scotland. These were 18th-century homes which had resisted briefly the forces of development and progress. The Burke Street of Moncrieff's youth was a street of associations, every house a history, with its own character and cast of characters, such as Peggy Neale-Swinton, devotee of the ulterior motive (psychology) and Reverend Bruce, who confessed he was not much of a preacher.

Moncrieff wrote that we possess the world "only because our predecessors appreciated it and cherished it." So I would call this book not simply a praise of fine old houses but of the sentiments and enduring values that made them possible. It is also a reminder of the choices we all make about our heritage.

Russell Kirk included this slim volume in the Library of Conservative Thought as a tribute to his friend "who deserves to be remembered," but also in hope that a reader might be inspired "to resist a bulldozer or comfort a next-door neighbor." I have seen no similar desires in the dusty tomes of libertarian economists.

Great for 2-year olds and their parents
Both my daughter and I adored this from the start. The book is a lot of fun to read because there are lots of sounds to make and interesting situations to discuss, and the rhythm of the text is excellent as well. The illustrations are lively and fun yet sophisticated, with a lot of black and bright colors and jagged lines. Maybe I like this a lot because I live in Brooklyn, New York and it shows a lot of the sorts of scenes we see every day (with a twist), but I think even the more suburban/rural kids would be fascinated by it. And for those kids fixated on vehicles, there are all kinds of them to see here. I'm buying several to use for birthday gifts, so I can avoid getting the standby favorites that people sometimes get duplicates of.

The best book about cable cars.
George Hilton's book is the most thorough study of the technology and the history of cable cars ever written. I am happy that it is available again; this book taught me that cable cars existed in many places besides San Francisco.

Spoof of favorite detectives is Great Fun Mystery!
* * * * *
~ ~ This book is not at all your average Who- Dun-it! It is a neat little mystery but so much more. The cast of the "Baker Street Irregulars" includes amateur detectives with some strikingly similar styles to some of the top detectives in Mystery fiction at the time (set in the 1940's).

~ ~ After the obligatory obnoxious and odious character is murdered, there is naturally a nice damsel in distress whose name needs to be cleared. Each of the amateur detectives (all members of the Sherlock Holmsian exclusive club), seizes upon a slightly different bit of evidence and goes off on their own private investigative track, each coming up with wildly different results.
Each of these sections in narrated in a style closer to the different authors that created each detective. The result is just wonderful for anyone who's read enough mysteries to recognize at least 3 or 4 detectives. Any that you don't recognize specifically will be recognizable by type.

~ ~ I lost my copy of this book a long time ago, probably lending it out to other mystery lovers. I was so thrilled to see this listing at Amazon[.com], that I not only had to write a review, I'm putting it in my shopping cart immediately for my next purchase. I can't wait to reread it.

~ ~ Maybe the best thing about the book is that while Boucher, a talented critic himself, is mocking other detectives, it is very clear that he himself has enjoyed reading tales of these beloved detectives himself. He could never write such an accurate spoof, without being an addict himself.
This is one of those rare books you want to share with everyone! Definitely 5 ***** stars!

Giving back
_Realising I was underpaid gave me the gumption to move on_. wrote Ms Muriel Seibert describing some of the frustrations she faced as a gender-pioneer on Wall Street in this fascinating first-person account, CHANGING THE RULES.

Ms Siebert begins her journey, _When I left Cleveland with five hundred dollars and a used Studebaker just before Thanksgiving 1954, I had been away from home and family only once...But that one trip the previous summer was a vacation in New York City with two girl friends_. Nearly fifty years later, she is presenting her views on how to improve 401(k) retirement plans and individual retirement accounts (IRAs) directly to top goverment leaders in Washington D.C. and on 13 August 2002 at President Bush's Economic Forum in Waco, Texas, USA.

In between, Ms Siebert had an awe-inspiring career. Briefly, the highlights include first woman to purchase a seat on the NYSE (#2646, 28 Dec 1967) and first female Superintendent of Banking for the State of New York. as well as running her own brokerage firm to become the first self-made woman Billionaire for a day in February 1999.

Even with these lofty accomplishments, Ms Siebert presents a down-to-earth and pragmatic review of her career. Her dogged determination and unrelenting persistence is highlighted as she recounts the obsticles she overcame. Being first is not without its share of problems. As history has shown on innumerable occasions, an established majority is resistant to accept the usurping minority culture. Ms Siebert's challenges were primarily experienced through prejudices involving gender and religion (anti-semitism).

It is inspiring for me to read about her coping methods. Whether it is a humourous Hallmark Card or storming a table at a posh restaurant, Ms Seibert is standing up for what she believes. Yes, she does learn to choose her battles and to have another job before she threatens to quit, however, she makes modifications without jeoparding her integrity or her spiritual commitment.

I have learned that the one spiritual value that cannot be imitated is the act of giving. Ms Siebert writes that _Giving is more than an obligation, it's a privilege_. She backs up these words with a lifetime of giving: volunteer time at the Henry Street Settlement on Manhattan's Lower East Side early in her career, and a continuous record of providing financial opportunities throughout her business life. For example, she has established the Siebert Entrepreneurial Philanthropic Plan (SEPP) which contributes to charities 50 percent of the selling concession after clearing costs that she earns on new securites. In many cases, Ms Seibert explains, _the client choses the charity. It's a chance to share profits from this business with organizations serving the communities from which we receive new opportunities_.

In a time when the Attorney General of her own state is now revealing an unprecedented level of corruption and bankruptcy of ethics in the Mutual Fund Business, it is refreshing to read of a person on Wall Street who, after 50 years in the Business of Financial Services can write, _I sleep well at night, knowing that I've been competitive but honest, tenacious but scrupulous, tough, but fair_.

essential for navigating So. Maryland, espec. if you're new
We wore out the first copy within 3 months, bought a second for the car. Comprehensive -- every road, trace, damp ravine (well, maybe that's going a bit too far) -- and accurate. Printed at a very readable scale. For someone used to NSEW-oriented streets in the SW US, a little time curled up with this map provided an absolutely essential re-orientation to the delightful aimlessness of southern MD roads.
