an excellent resource for kids to learn how to be safe.
As a child and youth worker counsellor I am always looking for great resources to use when working with children/teens. "Be Street Smart - Be Safe" is one of those great resources! It is written to be very appealing and interesting to children. Children will have fun doing the exercises while learning some very valuable lessons on personal safety in and outside the home.

The True Birth Of The Blues
No matter if you thought the wonderful artists of the 1920s like Bessie Smith and Robert Johnson exemplified early blues; they actually refined it into a passionate form of musical art. The Blues in this collection constitute the earliest published blues songs and instrumentals, and will offer many clues into the difficulties both writers and publishers had of settling into the common 12 bar form. Plenty of W.C. Handy as well, who while he did not exactly write the melodies in most of his pieces, he certainly knew how to assemble and promote them. One notable omission is Baby Seal's Blues, which for many years was considered the first publication of blues with 'Blues' in the title, or the mention of Oh You Beautiful Doll, in which the verse is also an early blues. Aside from that, just playing through this collection is an instant education that will leave you well versed in the form - and many of the pieces are available for a listen on my web site (better enhanced with book in hand).

I liked this book because it gives off a lot of self feelings. The problem is faciniting. I could hardly beleave that no of the informaition was true! Emily Arnold McCully expresses her beautiful artwork in this book. I definitly would recomend it to all of my friends no matter how old or young they are. I am sure, thanks to all of the work put into this book, that my friends will like it. I know I did and I know they will too.

The Best New Animation Design 2
Published in Paperback by Rockport Publishers (April, 2000)
Author: Rita Street
Amazon base price: $19.99
Used price: $4.90
Buy one from zShops for: $3.40
The second edition in Rita Street's popular series that highlights the best of commercial, student, and industrial animation is an inspiring collection of contemporary computer animation. Although the vast majority of content in The Best New Animation Design 2 is computer-generated 3-D animation, there is also a sprinkling of traditional cartoon-looking work, and even some motion graphics pieces.

Divided into various sections covering commercials, films, television, games, and student work, this glossy, lavishly illustrated book features work of all kinds and styles. Especially handy is a directory listing of studios, complete with street addresses (but not e-mail addresses or URLs).

Most of the people involved in any one production are acknowledged, with the names of the producing studio, the client or agency, the main directors and producers, and the software that was used listed individually. The majority of spots feature a paragraph or two that outline the process that was involved or the new technique that was developed for the spot.

The only problem is that there is no actual way to see the animation. An accompanying CD-ROM containing QuickTime versions of the clips--or, better yet, a DVD--would have made this magnificent gallery book educational, too. --Mike Caputo

Exceptional CG Animation Sampler
An exceptional tabletop book highlighting some of the most exciting and up-and-coming CG companies and schools in the industry. The wide variety of content illustrated is methodically broken up in well designed chapters covering commercials, films, television, games, and student work. Descriptions of how images are created demonstrates matter of factly that its not the meat of the machinery or the software tool but the artist in motion that makes an exceptional animation.

Between Donuts: Twenty-Years of the Humorous, Sobering, and Heart Wrenching Reality of a Street Cop

Life Sandwiched "Between Donuts"
If the cover attracted you to this book, you are not alone.

Pictured are a chocolate donut with a bite from it, a jelly filled donut awaiting its fate and a deputy sheriff badge #507 with the name Paul St. John Fleming inscribed at the bottom of the shield.

"Ahh, copper stories," we might think. We all know the symbols, the jokes. Trouble is, we still wouldn't have a clear idea of what the book contains. These "copper stories" are unexpected. They have heart. They might cause a reader to laugh and cry. They will certainly cause a reader to reassess his view of what a cop does-besides eat donuts.

There is a heart warming story about an English constable who influenced the author to become a cop. One, called "A Cold Day in Hell, " is about the day author Paul St. John Fleming's duty it was to guard a plane that had crashed in a city street; the corpses of two children were in it. Another is a humorous piece about a pie-eyed Santa who Fleming encountered one Christmas eve when he was given a choice to "work Christmas night or work Christmas night." These are mostly vignettes, mostly reprints from columns Fleming wrote for the Salt Lake Tribune, and many are set in Salt Lake City. There are 50 in all.

A little like donuts, these tiny tales are addictive. You probably won't be able to read just one.

I LOVE THESE GUIDES!!!
I am completely delighted with "The Little Guides" series. The format is extremely user friendly, and each guide is packed with useful and interesting information. I enjoy reading them, but my 6 year old daughter gives them the most use. While the guides are written at an adult level, there is plenty that she can read and understand. I currently own "Sharks," "Birds," "Mammals," "Space," "Whales," and "Flowers."

"Birds" contains two parts, the first covering the basics of birds, bird behavior, and bird and human interaction. Part two then gives information on about 250 different species of birds. The guide is richly illustrated and each entry contains information on the bird characteristics, feeding, reproduction, and habitat. This is a great book for car rides, having the children spot a bird and look it up in this guide.

This guide is packed with useful information, and is a great resource of adults as well as children!
