Excellent book to clarify fundamental financial conceptsAs a former student of Dr. Parks, I say this book has demystified more basic financial and economic theories than anything I've read before. Master this book and you'll never be intimidated by Wall Street Journal's C section ever again.
Excellent book. Some economics may help the reader. This is a very informative book on the workings of the U.S. economy. The first time I read it, there were some topics that were difficult to grasp. After taking some Jr. college-level economics and finance classes, the book made much more sense. Also, I found it helped me better understand today's economic news. For example, are deficits always inflationary? In addition, Dr. Parks exposes the all-to-prevalent lack of economic theory displayed by our politicians and economic advisors.

Hetty is the woman historians have missed!Hetty Howland Robinson Green is so much more than the myth, " The Witch of Wall Street." This account of her Quaker life proves how the only child to inherit four whaling fortunes was destined to make a great deal of money. No other female has accomplished what Hetty did- amassing $100,000,000 by her demise in 1916. The facts are better than the fiction. She opened doors for women on Wall Street when women couldn't control their own money, own land or railroads, or speak in public! A female, financial genius ahead of her time, Hetty got bad reviews from male newspaper reporters. This book reveals the truth about her life being shaped by money, how promises of Howland wills changed her upon every death. She lived life to the fullest, to have amassed the money caused great comfort, to have spent it would have caused great pain! she was the Queen of finance, the human cash register, and the princess of whales! Men and women will find this account amazing and spellbinding.
Great book; valuable, entertaining history.Vermonter Hetty Green was a peer and rival of the great tycoons of the 19th century. Competing shoulder to shoulder with Morgan, Rockefeller, Carnegie, Vanderbilt, Gould, and Livermore, Hetty Green amassed a fortune which made her the richest woman in the world. Along the way she also earned a reputation for eccentricity (cheapness) about money which became the stuff of legend, a la Scrooge and Leona Helsmley. ...fascinating story

The Words that Changed the World: Azusa Street Sermons

Great Sermons of Azusa StreetThis book which contains sermons preached by the late Bishop William J. Seymour should be read by every Christian, Saved, Sanctified and/or religious person. Bishop Seymour takes us back to the old time way, that the bible speaks about, " Ask for the old path ". What Bishop Seymour is preaching about is not just a beleif, but it is a way of Life according to the bible. He speaks of The Baptism of the Holy Ghost and how to recieve it, first getting rid of sin, then by tarring on the altar, seeking to be filled, not someone teaching you how to speak in tongues. I even appreciate that fact that he expounds on the fact that not everyone speaks in tongues, that it is a gift to some not all. The Bishop also preaches about being the husband of one wife and the wife having one husband. Many find this controversial in this day, but it is written in the bible, and Bishop Seymour breaks it down scripture by scripture so, that there would be no mistake about what God has ordained.
This book is a must for those who want the true word of God, not false doctrines. If you want to know Christ and his ways of righteousness, I highly recommend this book.
Simple Truths / Amazing ImpactHere are some of the actual sermons preached by Bishop William Seymour at the Azusa Street Revival in 1906. This revival introduced pentecostalism to the world and changed the religious landscape forever. Read for yourself the simple truths that changed the world.

Realistic Look at ProstitutionI was drawn into the story of abuse and couldn't put it down until I had finished 12Th Street Rita. It's a true story of how one girl becomes a prostitute and how she gets out of the life. It's very graphic in the details and I felt I was there with her on the streets. I cried with her and I laughed with her. It's a page turner with lots of adventure.

13 French Street and the Red Scarf

greatest 50's movie never madeJust to clarify--I have not read 13 French Street-- yet. Red Scarf is, however, perhaps my favorite roman noir. It would have made, I believe, a wonderful Technicolor noir with maybe Bob Mitchum and Lizabeth Scott. Maybe let Phil Karlson direct from an adaptation by A. I. Bezzerides. Too damn cool.
The book itself is dark and pungent. Swift and cinematic in the manner of a contemporary thriller. It's absolutely unforgettable. The best book by a fantastic forgotten crime writer. And if you like this kind of thing read also They Don't Dance Much by James Ross, Shake Him Till He Rattles by Malcolm Braly and Name of the Game Is Death by Dan Marlowe. Small slices of noir heaven all.

You gotta read this book. This book really should be made into a movie. It's got all the elements for a good thriller flick. Glamour, suspense, intrique. I loved it. The death by bread in the shower scene alone is worth the read. Find this book and read it! It's been years since I've read it, but I have never given up looking for that house full of money on "19 Purchase Street." Kevin Spacey was born to play the lead in this story.

1968 Marching In the Streets
Published in Hardcover by Trafalgar Square ()
Amazon base price: $
1968: Marching in the Streets is a dynamic time line of the year that revolution swept the planet. With present tense prose, cartoons, and photographs, Tariq Ali (who was one of the founding editors of Black Dwarf, a London-based journal that pops up frequently in 1968) and Susan Watkins chronicle a year that saw everything from the assassinations of Che Guevara, Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. to KKK death threats against 70-year-old philosopher Herbert Marcuse. The Black Panthers, the street riots in Paris, the revolutionary spirit in Czechoslovakia ... all this and more is vividly recreated with a nonjudgmental voice that allows events to speak for themselves.
Average review score:

A refreshing look at an amazing yearThe authors say their book is simply a chronicle of 1968. But chronicles are rarely written with such deft dramatic irony, nor are they usually so ebullient or scattered with jokes. Tariq Ali and Susan Watkins have done something which is a challenge to any historian: they have made utopian rebellion intelligible. The international span makes this book a unique record: Mexico, Brazil, Pakistan, Palestine, Poland as well as women's liberation and Paris, Prague and Vietnam. The utopian ideas of 1968---that knowledge should be accessible, work democratised and time claimed for living and loving, not just for making money--are even more relevant 30 years on.
