How the big guys do it
If you want to learn how the major players on Wall Street choose their investments, you'll really enjoy this book. Kazanjian is a wonderful writer. He makes these investment concepts very easy to understand. I have been a stock broker for over 25 years, yet I learned a great deal from this book. It's interesting how you read about a lot of the investment pros Kazanjian profiles in the media all the time. But it wasn't until I read this book that I got to know them and felt like I truly understood their investment philosophies.

Great investment primer
This was an excellent book. Gives specific stock and fund picks and shows how the pros select their investments. I highly recommend it.

Blues hits Gold
Despite a slow beginning, this chilling tale of courage and loyalty grasps the reader and urges them to read further into the complex plot. Though the gangsters were slightly stereotypical, they still were believable and convincing, therefore not altering the book much. The characters were all well portrayed and the protagonist is brimming with courage and determination, much admired the readers. Historically, it was fairly accurate, what with the immigration from Ireland to Ellis Island and Prohibition. But, there was more slightly Irish History than American History. With Wash-Basin Street Blues: Nora in New York, Mark O'Sullivan took a complicated story and weaved it into a marvelous novel that any book-lover should add to their collection.

A Dream Realized
Miguel Melendez has given us a thoughtful, inspirational, and sensitive account of the Young Lords Party and also of the many pivotal events of his own life. I loved reading this book full of cultural tidbits and an insider's history of a group of dedicated individuals. This book offers important lessons for today's youth, many of whom feel no connection to the larger society. It serves as a tremendous contribution to young people by sharing positive ways to channel rage and frustration with one's social and emotional condition. The writer brilliantly shows what it is to search for meaning and purpose in one's life as he questions events occurring around him.

Quiero agradecerle a Mickey para haber escrito un libro tan bello que demuestra que todos tenemos el derecho a la humanidad y dignidad.

Excellent Boricua History- Palante!!!
Micky Melendez has written an excellent easy to read history of Puerto Rican efforts for social, political and economic empowerment from the Young Lords Party in the 1960's to today's struggle for a Latino mayor of Nueva York. This monograph by Micky Melendez is a powerful weapon in Boricua's long walk to freedom. palante

Haunting, delicate, moving
What I love about the book is the lyrical, romantic use of language- at times her precise descriptions turn into poetry. Actually I have always been in love with the lingo of the period, encapsulating as it does that change from the old to the new, the shift from the past world to that modern age in which we now live. I also love the halting narration, echoing the frsustrating nature of Olivia's experience of life and love. She is entrapped in a clandestine relationship which alienates her from the outside world, from her friends, from reality.

I love the way this isolation is mirrored in the narration's seemingly erratic shifts in person and tense. It is, over all, a melancholy book, and yet it is not exactly depressing. At times the details comfort me in an Enid Blyton kind of way! The abortion sequence is not harrowing but this in itself adds to a gentle, but sharp, sense of sadness. I do wish there was a sequel so we could know whatever happened to Rollo and Olivia!

I recommend this book mostly to women, romantics, and esp. those of us in love w. the period....

Lyrical review
I have just written an essay on this book for Birkbeck College. I think it is a truly wonderful book. Lyrical, sad, moving. It is written and set in 1930's London and I can imagine so much of the scenery. Not (underlined) that I can remember 1930's London, just my imigination and looking at old photos. I have tried to find out more about RL, but I have not been able to discover very much. Just tantalising bits. Is is a lovely book and I reccommend it. Avis Judd

All you need to know about West Philly
Forensic architect Bob Skaler really did his homework putting together a pictorial history of West Philadelphia. Though none of my family ever settled in the area, I was fascinated to read about the ethnic makeup of the different neighborhoods in addition to being treated to very rare photos from Skaler's postcard collection (which he has been assembling for the better part of 50 years).

He treats the reader to a thorough history of each neighborhood (or village, as it was formerly known) and goes into detailed explanation of the architecture of the houses that once stood in those areas (he rips architect H.E. Flower a new one for his design of rowhomes in the Parkside section of West Philly - homes that had their walls knocked down because the original homeowners weren't crazy about having to share a common stairwell).

A University of Pennsylvania graduate, Skaler did an excellent job in handling West Philly's history - from University City to 52nd Street.

West Philadelphia University City to 52nd Street
West Philadelphia is a well written history with 200 wondeful and rare vintage photographs of West Philadelphia as it looked 100 years ago. The author explains how West Philadelphia developed and documents many of the architects and owners of the buildings shown. We were thrilled to see a picture in the book of our old family home and local church as they looked in 1905.Those who lived in West Philadelphia at one time or are living in the area now will greatly enjoy the book.It documents an area of Philadelphia that may soon be lost . We gave it 5 stars!

Absolutely outstanding
This would be a fine book even if it were only a well-executed example of those "learn about a culture" books. But it is much more. The book teaches -- without the heavy-handed EXPLANATIONS that so often destroy the flow and writing and make the whole thing seem so artificial -- about Jewish values and the complexities of social responsibility, justice and dignity, without ever TELLING them to the reader. The author lets the story speak for itself, and the message comes through all the more clearly, not less, for her forbearance. Just terrific. Worth the price for the kids on your list (and I don't think it's only appropriate for under-eights).

Excellent!
This is an oustanding book for children. My daughter received it as a gift, and it is one of those rare books that adults feel delivers a powerful message, but children love anyway! The book gives an interesting look at an immigrant Jewish community without ever being pedagogical, and, even better, teaches a wonderful philosophy of social justice and "charity" without being in the least preachy and (even rarer) without stating in words the point the story has just made. You will love this one

AN INFORMATIVE AND THRILLING READ
"When Giants Ruled" quickly involves the reader in the drama of print journalism's most robust era of cutthroat competition. Hy Turner demonstrates a strong talent for condensing the story of newspapers to its essence. He never overburdens you with details, though occasionally I found myself wishing for more. Meanwhile, the reader is often rewarded with new and colorful anecdotes to familiar events in our nation's history. Turner's superb writing skills keep the reader delightfully moving from one page to the next, while sometimes pausing to more fully enjoy the unfolding drama. It is a book that could only have been written by someone to whom journalism was obviously a first love.

The definitive book about the men who invented journalism.
HyTurner has given us an amazingly exciting history of the rough and tumble world of New York City newspapers, how they got started and who started them. He recounts scoops, scandals, dirty tricks, sensational reporting of sensational stories, and the lives and careers of colorful men and women who invented all of the techniques for digging up the who, what, where, when, why and how of events from murders to wars. What might have been dry and dreary reading that only a journalism pofessor could care about has been presented as a compelling saga that reads like a novel. If you enjoyed the Orson Welles classic film "Citizen Kane" and W.A.Swanberg's "Citizen Hearst" you will love Hy Turner's beautifully written and scrupulously researched story of the titans of print who once rubbed elbows, and often jammed them in the ribs of their competitors in a short block of downtown-New York's newspaper row.And if you wonder how the Sunday comic strips got their start, Hy Turner has the answer. This book also relates how a shrewd newspaper mogul collected pennies to build the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty, and sold a lot of newspapers. Everyone who reads a newspaper is in debt to the giants of Park Row, and anyone who cares about journalism should read this terrific book.

FANTASTIC! One of the few mysteries I read over and over
I'm a huge fan of Emma Lathen, and this is probably my favorite book of all. Like all of her books, it is very witty (in some places, downright hilarious), and thoroughly enjoyable. The series features Wall Street bank executive John Putnam Thatcher and his colleagues -- and Wall Street banking was never that interesting when I worked there. Although I usually give away mysteries after reading them, this is one of only two series I keep and reread. I never tire of them.

John Putnam Thatcher is a winner
Emma Lathen has produced a wonderful lead character in John Putnam Thatcher. Although often swept into areas far outside his field of expertise, he brings his incisive mind to problems of all types. Mr. Thatcher, along with his many friends and associates, always follow the money - and the killer. Highly recommended if you enjoy a tightly crafted mystery.

I Thought It Was Wicked Cool
I Read this book in three hours and I thought it was one of the best books I have ever read! The book was scary and very vivid things were described to make it sound even more scary, thrilling, and grotesque! Great R.L. Stine book.

It's a really great book!
When my teacher reads, he stops after a certain amount of time which keeps my class & I in suspense! We don't like when he does that so he reads some more.To me it's kinda like a mystery to solve.

It's Refreshing to Hear the Truth-- Thank You!
I was blown away by our young people's ability to express themselves in such a creative manner! Why keep Tryin'? has all kinds of artwork, incredible pieces, and the youth's stories are so naked and honest!

These contributors hide nothing, sugar-coat nothing, only share their most intimate experiences with the reader. As an adult, myself, in the business world, it was difficult to read about some of the horrible things our kids are going through like domestic violence & homelessness yet it was refreshing to hear about the truth. The truth about the real issues our teens face. I can remeber feeling some of the desperate things these young contributors talk about but times have changed too-- this book will wake you up!

It was a wonderful read for me to get back intouch with myself and my younger generation. I only wish there had been a book like this when I was a teenager. This is a very valuable resource for any age but please pass this along to a teenager!

There ARE reasons to keep tryin'!
As a 31 year white female there is now way to truly understand how different life is for teenagers today, but "Why Keep Tryin'" has brought me as close as I could possibly come to true understanding of today's youth. The poetry and the artwork in the book is amazing. It's hard to believe that people that young are already so talented. What is even more difficult to believe is how much these young people have been through in such a short time. Most of the poems appear by their maturity and content to be written by people at least twice the age of the poets.

I commend these young people for sharing their inner most thoughts, hopes, dreams with me and hopefully many more people!

If you have a teenager or know a teenager--get this book for them AND yourself.
