Tales of Trotter Street

Trotter Street is alive with activity! Mae prepares to be an angel in her school play, but will the arrival of her new baby sister spoil everything? The Pattersons have a load of wet cement unexpectedly delivered to their front doorstep. Carlos is itching for a new big bike, but Mom can't afford it. Still, his birthday is coming up... Samantha thinks Mrs. Dean next door is mean. But when Sam risks hurting her feelings, she feels miserable. These four stories--Angel Mae, The Big Concrete Lorry, Wheels, and The Snow Lady--are full of the everyday adversity and diversions familiar to anyone who has grown up in a closely knit neighborhood. Dozens of children from a bouquet of ethnic and cultural backgrounds tumble through the pages, weaving in and out of one another's lives in a friendly tangle of humanity. Well-loved British author and illustrator Shirley Hughes has a knack for treating ordinary lives and small moments as the important, fascinating times they really are. Her warm, affectionate tone and matching illustrations touch on real issues with a respectful light-handedness. Each simple tale captures the personalities and current drama of the characters, giving us a gentle glimpse of the tribulations that face all of us. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Hughes is a gem - loving, gentle, richly depicted scenesWe discovered Hughes while living "down under" where she is better known thanks to Australia's strong ties to Britain. Also highly recommend her poems such as found in _The Nursery Collection_. Wonderful, rich illustrations; warm, loving families.
Terrific stories and detail for age 3 and upShirley Hughes's books are generally terrific. This is a great way to buy, since a collection is cheaper than the individual books, though the price is quite high in US $, being a British edition.

Small Town HerosI found Tatoo's & Motorcycles to be very imaginative, darkly humorous and satisfying. The characters are types that you find in real life and their secrets that they hide under the veneer of happiness in suburbia. A very origional work!
'Road novel meets small town tale -- original, warm.'The cover review states that this novel is 'A sort of one-woman Thelma and Louise'. It is and it isn't. Yes, the novel is very visual, indeed filmic, and it does feature LUCY, a woman on the road and on the run with her two children. But the real hero of 'Tattoos and Motorcycles' is neither a man nor a woman, but a small town in America called Tinicum. In a jigsaw, chapter-by-chapter fashion, we are introduced to the inner fears, secrets, and dreams of various characters who people Tinicum's history as the town evolves from immigrant's paradise to forlorn suburbia. While these characters include oddball types such as a suicidal nurse, topless waitress, romantic tattoo artist, southern-belle assassin, unlucky gambler, and car-crazy wanna-be gangster, their lives come across as empathetic and endearing. The peculiar vision of David Lynch springs to mind, but the worlds of Raymond Carver or Thorton Wilder are probably closer. Highly recommended.

A Joy For Mystery FansThe late Cay van Ash was head of the Department of Literature at Tokyo's prestigious Waseda University. He was also the author of an authorized biography of Sax Rohmer, MASTER OF VILLAINY. This is the second of van Ash's three novels (the first was published under a pseudonym in the 1940's) and it is a delightful recreation of the worlds of Sherlock Holmes and Fu Manchu. The book fits seamlessly into the continuity of both HIS FINAL BOW and THE HAND OF FU MANCHU. Long-time readers of Conan Doyle and Rohmer will thrill to read how effortlessly van Ash revives these beloved characters. For anyone who has been disappointed with the portrayal of Holmes in countless pastiches, you can rest assured that van Ash recaptures the spirt and character of the original. Best of all, for Fu Manchu fans, van Ash leaves the door open for future authors to mine ideas from the opening of this wonderful literary re-creation.

The Thomas Guide Revolutionized The World Of Cartography! It is true that the Thomas Guide is the most conclusive map book around! I recently purchased the 2001 LA/Orange Thomas Guide, as well as many others, at the Thomas Brothers store in San Francisco on Jackson and Columbus. They had every Thomas Guide known to man, and wall maps to accompany them!
Best MapsThe Thomas Guide is the definitive map for anyone who needs to find addresses quickly and easily in the Los Angeles area. It lists every street imaginible, even tiny ones like the one near where I live that doesn't even have a street sign, yet Thomas Guide knows its name.
Streets are indexed by street name, making them easy to find in the grid-like maps on each page. There is even a handy zip code listing. Great for sales people and the like who need to find their way through unfamiliar territory quickly and easily. I'd be lost without my Thomas Guide.

You need to get this reference book.If you're at all like me and are just prone to get lost easily or just need to be sure. You need to buy this book. I gave it 5 stars because to the people that know how to read maps well will have no problem getting there way around the book. I think it should have been made just a tad bit easier. For example, connect all the cities page to page, not some cities here, and the connecting ones way on another page. Although it tells you how to read it, and says it was made to be easier to read that way, I haven't tooken the time to learn it. Zipcode finder is another great tool added to this book. It comes with a cd-rom to help find the page you are looking for. Just give it a try. They're known for great maps. Take care.
I couldn't put this down....I couldn't put this book down...especially when I was lost in Downey.
An alltime classic.

Watch out for the road signs - they won't steer you wrongCNBC anchor Ron Insana's "Trendwatching," his third examination of the stock market after "The Message of the Markets" in 2001 and "Traders' Tales" in 1996, should have been entitled "How not to lose your bundle the next time around." His stated purpose is to save the individual investor from him/her self during the next investment bubble that's sure to come. And he delivers his message loud and clear, whether it will be heeded or not. Throughout this work, Insana strains to point out that although bubbles occur, you do not have to be a victim; that with the historical knowledge he presents, you can arm yourself to go forth and do battle with market forces to survive and prosper through the bubbles' wild rides. This book is a revealing trip down investment-history lane and should be placed beside every investor's phone or electronic communications device as a reminder not to get caught up in the emotional mania that might be brewing right around the corner. He begins by defining what a bubble is, and borrowing strongly from Charles Kindleberger's (who died recently) "Manias, Panics, and Crashes," Insana traces bubbles starting from our most recent stock market debacle all the way back to Holland's Tulip Craze in the early 1600s. He finds that they all follow the Kindleberger (and Hyman Minsky) script: an invention or discovery sets off "a new era," then easy profits (speculation) fueled by easy credit or monetary conditions lead to the eventual parabolic blow off. Revulsion and recrimination set in as prices plunge back to earth. The insiders will have made out like bandits but the little guys get left holding a worthless bag of stocks. Reforms are instituted to correct the excesses. Then the stage gets set for the next bubble which will be of a different variety but of the same nature as the one before. The writing is crisp and the language is lucid. It's as interesting as it is educational. Where I would have wanted more insight concerns Insana's statement, "Bubbles, while useful in the building of transformational industries, are destructive when it comes to the financial well-being of the individual investor." That sounds like he's a bubble buster. Yet, he frequently references high-tech venture capitalist Robert McNamee who contends that without bubbles nothing is ever accomplished. So which is it? Can progress really happen without these manias in which we literally throw money at the "new, new thing" of Michael Lewis fame? Thinking along the lines much like the ongoing debate about what part adversity plays in human accomplishment, Insana raises the question of whether we can build new infrastructure without hurting the losers who invariably get in too late and stay in too long? The question remains to be answered.Another inquiry comes to mind while rummaging through the canal building, railroad building, automobile making, radio broadcasting...and Internet bubbles of the past couple hundred years: What part does politics play in the care and feeding of the "good times" so necessary for bubbles to form and spread. Did political elites of yesteryear encourage earlier bubbles? Although LBJ's Fed chairman, William McCesney Martin, said that the Fed's job was to "take away the punch bowl" just as the party gets started, would politicians sit idly by and watch the Fed (or some other monetary authority) squash a bubble, and with it the jobs and business conditions necessary for their (re)election? Well, we know George Bush did in the early 90s. But more recently, would Clinton have paid no mind to the Fed if it had begun raising stock margin requirements after Greenspan's famous December 1996 "Irrational Exuberance" speech? Did Clinton not learn something from the Republican sweep of Congress in 1994 after Greenspan goosed short term interest rates 100% earlier that year, and long term rates followed by rising 25%? Toward the end of the book, Insana ventures into the future by taking the precepts he has established for the creation of a bubble and plugs them into today's market. It isn't very difficult for him to make the case for hard assets being the next mania. Referring back to Kindleberger, he finds that just about all the ingredients necessary for a hard-asset bubble are in place: easy monetary policy, a weakening dollar, war, high oil prices, strong real estate demand, and an escalating gold price. The only thing missing to set off this bubble is the recognition of the presence of "inflation." When that gains currency in the media, then it's "everybody into the pool" and off we go again. Perhaps the true worth of this book is the graph on the last page - a picture of what Insana has been defining, chronicling, and warning against. Taken from The Bank Credit Analyst newsletter, it is a composite chart of the path all bubbles take. Just fit in whatever current mania is climbing skyward, and if it resembles this pattern...GET OUT! For Insana, that's the real payoff for keeping an eye on the trend.
If You Own Stock, Read This BookWhile millions of Americans might feelbewildered by the confusion aroundthe market and turned off by muchof the media hype surrounding themarket, this book and its author arethe antitode.Ron Insana comes from the first tierof financial journalists who taketheir work seriously and provideperspective and insight that areuseful to anyone navigating reallife investments with real lifeconsquences for their financialsecurity. Lou Dobbs of CNN, NeilCavuto of Fox and Lou Rukeyser ofCNBC join Insana in this smallhigh quality circle of first ratemarket commentators and thinkers. This is a book about perspective andhistory. It is the history of megatrend market forces such as theTulip Mania from centuries ago andthe Japanese crisis that continuestoday, that Insana discusses andexplains. And its this historythat Insana reminds us offers theperspective so often missing today,a world of market bubbles andcrashes and scandals and confusion.Yes, they went crazy buying andselling Tulips and real estate atdifferent times in disparate partsof the world, just as they (we)went crazy buying and selling techstocks during the Nasdaq craze. As Insana reminds us, the marketevents we go through in our lifetimes, the good and the bad and theemotional frenzies up and down, are not unique to us. These kindsof megafrenzies have happened beforeand there is much we can learn fromhistory, to avoid mistakes thatseem to be repeatedly made, and tounderstand opportunities that maynot seem apparent in the heat ofthe moment and the emotionalism ofthe crisis. If you're disgusted with the marketand vow never to invest again, readthis book. And if you get thatcrazy feeling that you just haveto buy some stock today, thisminute, right now, you should alsoread this book. Because in the end,as is often said and as Insanareminds us well, those who learnfrom history are less likely torepeat its mistakes, and morelikely to prosper. In the meantimeread these true tales of marketmanias, remember that anything toogood to be true usually isn't,remember that fear and panic arenot the best ways to build financialsecurity. As you plan your financialfutures this book is invaluable byentertaining us, and reminding usof the obvious, which we so oftenforget.

A real nice book on NYC historyI bought this book for my son to use in his history studies in school and was so pleasently surprised with the great map reproductions that I kept it myself. The quality of the maps are fantastic and so interesting. I strongly recommend this book for the NYC history buff.
A gem of a map book !What a find !!! For anyone interested in N.Y.C., subways, history or anything about New York, this book is filled with beautifully pressented maps covering nearly 100 years. It is perfect as an accompaniment to the first volume. Bravo to John Landers for work well-done.

Goes to great lengths to make the metric system excitingI can only second--nay--third, dbsf's take on The Metric System. The passion! The fury! The measurements! Chapter 9, "Intercranial Volumetrics: The Dizzy Years" is worth the price of admission alone, although the included inflatable metre stick makes this an incredibly useful book. Don't miss it, unless you're hooked on Avoir du Pois.
An excellent index of Metric to Standard measuresThis is a witty and sensitive discourse of the metric system of measurements, it's impact on non-metric societies and the conversion tables used to translate one to the other.
