Informative
This book should be passed out in proactive schools across the country; it reveals techniques bad guys (and gals) use to take advantage of female victims. It also provides insight on what the monsters out there are thinking as they size a female victim up. One of the best self-help books on crime I've ever read. Everyone's daughter should read this!

Prevention is what it is about
This is an excellent book very well written focusing on the techniques to prevent you from becoming the victim. I have been involved in Martial Arts for over 25 years and have been heavily involved in teaching this subject as well as Child Abduction Prevention and this is one of the best books I have read. It is worth taking your time to read it and for the price you couldn't ask for anything better.

An introduction to the world of slang etc.
If you are hoping to get clarification of the meaning of slang, vulgar and obscene terms in Spanish this dictionary & thesaurus is a great intro to this vocabulary in Spanish. As in any language this is usually hard to learn and understand without exposure and because Spanish is so broad whether you are a native speaker or not it is sometimes necessary to consult a reference to clarify the meaning of a word or expression. An everyday word in one country can be considered vulgar and totally unacceptable in another.

This book contains data from Street Spanish 1,2,3 and a thesaurus of terms thematically categorized. If you wish to understand these terms as they are used and terms more specific to a particular Latin country or region, this thesaurus will prove beneficial. I also recommend the Mcgraw-Hill Diccionario del Argot: El Sohez. It is very advanced but is thorough and helpful if you wish to explore the world of idioms and slang in Spanish.

Ay, que padre!
I think this dictionary/thesaurus is deifinitely worth purchasing for those who like to expand on their knowledge of Spanish. I like how David Burke gives explanations on how certain idioms and words came about. I also liked the fact that at the end of the book, he put in some of the "Naughty Spanish" from his other book, Street Spanish 3: The Best of Naughty Spanish. I musn't forget, either, about the illustrations because they are so hilarious. So anyway, you guys, compren el libro. Uds. pueden darme gracias mas tarde!!

Superb Format
I teach English to Chinese professionals and have found Mr. Burkes book to be invaluable. Each chapter has an opening dialog using idioms. The author then proceeds to present the information in traditional English, he then offers and explanation of the same material, and finally he translates the correct English into everyday spoken English. The balance of each chapter is devoted to giving additional explanation for each idiom. Additional idioms that have a similar meaning are listed as well as idioms that have the opposite meaning. Crossword puzzles and word games round out a great book for teaching idioms to people from other countries.

For fans of complex relationship dramas
In the Amazon, globetrotting photojournalist Ben Asher helps bring down murdering con artist Asada although the prisoner vows vengeance. However, he returns to reality when his twelve years old daughter Emmie calls pleading with him to come to South Village, California as her mother Rachel Wallers was severely injured in a car accident. He would have said no, but he learns that Asada escaped. He flies to California to keep the two females he loves safe.

Rachel wants out of the hospital after a month there because she needs the security that her first real home provides her. As a child she wandered the country as her father saved corporations from certain death. When Ben enters her hospital room, Rachel asks him to leave, but he refuses. This is the first time they have seen each other in thirteen years since she threw him out of her life. Ben takes Rachel home. As Asada's thugs close in on the trio, Ben and Rachel know they love one another and Emmie, but she needs roots and he needs the world.

Fans of complex relationship dramas with some minor related action will enjoy the return to South Village. The story line is at its most interesting when the lead protagonists skirmish over the safety of shelter that supports Dr. Maslow's hierarchy of needs as Rachel needs permanent shelter among her most significant first level requirements while self-actualization with minor shelter pulls Ben. Though the Asada subplot is more of a device to get the prime pair together, fans will of deep character studies will appreciate this tale.

Great Book!
Streets of gold was a great book of a young girl's story of how her and her family came to America and of their hardships. If you are interested in ellis island and stories of immagrants coming to America this book is for you!

Touching story!
I visited Ellis Island, which is where I picked up this treasure. As you read, you feel a part of this young girl's life, including the struggles while immigrating and the joys in creating a new life in America. My grandparents immigrated to the US and are now unable to tell me about their experience. I was touched by this book because I could imagine what my grandparents' experience was like via the story of Marisia. The author used sources from Ellis Island and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, so the images are accurate and detailed. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would recommend it for anyone who enjoys learning about the past and understanding the plights of other cultures and people in the world. A real treasure!

An inside look at community development
I witnessed much of the transformation described in this book and it is remarkably accurate. This should serve as a guide for community organizers seeking to work in neglected neighborhoods. Too bad Peter Medoff is no longer with us.

Success story in community development, w/difficult odds
A little too much detail. However, this is an inspiring success story about a community in very bad shape, that turned itself around totally, working "from the inside out". Well known in the field of community development, in my area.

A wonderful source for learning about Chicago's earlier days
I loved reading this book. It is an enjoyable, clearly-written introduction to a neighborhood that was "home" to thousands of Chicago's immigrants, including many of my ancestors. "Streets of the Near West Side" goes beyond those facts provided by such genealogical sources as Censuses. It can help family researchers develop a better understanding of their ancestor's "new neighborhood" in America. So, open the book, along with a map of Chicago, and learn how this neighborhood's history intertwines with the names of its streets.

Quirky, odd, and fun: "Streets of the Near West Side"
Streets of the Near West Side is supposed to be a Chicago history book about one small neighborhood, but it's much more. It's about who the area's streets are named after, so it tells the stories of Presidents, Indians, Civil and Revolutionary War battles, and a lot of other quirky, odd, and fun information that you didn't learn about in high school history. At 117 pages, it can be read in one sitting. You can't put it down! You don't have to be a Chicagoan--just a lover of biography and history

Streets, Railroads, and the Great Strike of 1877 (Historical Studies of Urban America)

Average review score:

A great read!
This is a wonderful book for the lay person and professional historian alike. It puts a new spin on understanding the Great Strike and brings the streets of 1877 back to life. I have given this book as a gift to friends as well as enjoyed it in college classes. I am already looking forward to the author's next book.

a Five Star Book--Outstanding
Dr. David Stowell has written a page-turner while also managing to break fresh, new ground in the field of labor history. This exciting and insightful monograph should serve as an example to historians of all stripes on just how history should be written. Stowell's narrative and analysis mesh seamlessly as he masterfully recreates the tensions, forces, and personalities that ultimately clashed in the Great Strike of 1877. This is a must for any one interested in the late-19th century and labor. A wonderful display for labor history at its finest.

Superb Baltimore Street History Reference Book!
This book contains the finest collection of the history of Baltimore streets I have ever seen. The book describes the general history of many major streets and numerous minor streets throughout Baltimore. The streets are listed in alphabetical order. Many photos of historical landmarks accompany the book. Mention of numerous notable persons is made in regards to the history of many streets.
Although this reference work is not comprehensively exhaustive ( it doesn't mention every Baltimore street ) it is very worth your while to peruse. For instance, this book doesn't list Fear Avenue which is located two blocks from the Pimlico Racetrack. Fear Avenue was named in honor of my great-grandfather Boston Fear and his two sons: George Fear and Frederick Fear. They were major contributors to the Pimlico Racetrack during the early part of the twentieth century. My great-grandfather Boston Fear was a German immigrant who created the suburb of Walbook: Baltimore's very first suburb. Walbrook was originally named Fearville in honor of Boston Fear. Boston Fear gave Francis X. Bushman ( Hollywood's very first film superstar) his very first job in life.
I would highly recommend that all libraries in the state of Maryland possess a copy of this book for their Baltimore history section.

Foliage for Your Family Tree
This book is excellent for anyone who has family they are working on from Baltimore. It goes alphabetically street by street and lists many interesting facts about the history of the street. Often in our research we find that a relative lived for instance on Charles Street. But we have NO idea what it was like 100 years ago. Streetwise Baltimore provides just that. Additionally at the back of the book they go through a similiar process with some Baltimore neighborhoods. When I bought the book I had NO idea I would find a picture of my great grandfathers store front on page 145.... This brought tears to my eyes and made my Mother a very happy lady. This is a quality book... well worth the dollars spent.
