A malarious way to bring your interest to a fever pitch
Once again, Kinky Friedman gives us a much needed respite from the tedious news we could do without. This time he does it in a unique and entertaining manner that has Kinky flat on his back, more delirious than usual, and dependent upon that wonderful group of unconventional wanna be sleuths that we have come to know and love.

I love Kinky's work so much, and his terrific, if unconventional slant on life, that I could find a cook book by him entertaining and completely enchanting. I am well aware that behind that Texas wardrobe beats the heart of a poet, and the soul of a lovable and caring mystic. Genius is an overused word, but I don't think in Kinky's case you can avoid it. His interests are eclectic, and his knowledge varied. Don't let his demeanor fool you; this guy can do just about any damn thing he puts his mind to....and do it damn well

If you enjoy Kinky's work, please don't let the "intelectual elite" label you as a member of some mindless cult who follows some lemming-like troop over the cliff of mediocrity. He is so much more substantial, and it is a terrible shame that the boneheaded literati prefer the boring conventional over bright, inventive, and thought provoking.

Keep it up, Kinky, you are appreciated enormously by those of us who can tell the difference between assembly line drivel and the thought provoking gems you provide us. You make the mundane tolerable, and we love you for it.

Hilarious-Typical Kinky
While drinking at the Corner Bistro with his friend McGovern, Kinky Friedman starts shaking, mumbling and goes from hot to cold in an instant. He blacks out and comes to in a hospital. At first Kinky thinks McGovern slipped him a Mickey, but the symptoms continue. The Kinkster knows he is sick but it takes the doctor a while to figure out what is wrong with him. He suffers from a virulent form of malaria picked up when Kinky worked for the Peace Corps in Borneo.

His friends, the Village Irregulars offer to nursemaid him so the doctor discharges him with the provision that he stays in his apartment for six weeks. During one of his moments of lucidity, Kinky looks out the window and sees a man beating a woman until she starts bleeding. When he calls 911and the police go over to investigate they find an empty and unused warehouse and nobody on the second and fourth floor heard anything. Kinky is determined to prove that he is right and he uses the Village Irregulars as his eyes and ears with some very hilarious results.

Kinky Friedman is irreverent and witty as usual, insulting everyone and everything using blue humor so he doesn't sound like a racist (which he isn't). It's touching to see Kinky's misfits and society's rejects gather round in his hour of need and no one can doubt them for not believing Kinky since half the time he is hallucinating. The real star of THE PRISONER OF VANDAM STREET is the cat whose displeasure at the invasion of his territory by an occupying force is shown in a very definite way.

A great childrens book
I like this book because it involves dogs. They have to learn how to own a pet.I thought this was a good book because it teaches children what they have to do if they got a pet.

Fun way how to take care of a dog
This book is great, a dog teaches two guys how to take care of a puppy. For little kids it could be helpfull, with colorfull pictures kids could learn basics of taking care of a dog. The funniest part is that the dog teaches the guys, he makes different face and shows them what to do which makes the book very interesting.

Rising up: Class warfare from the streets to the airwaves
This book Is one of the best books I have ever read. Richard Edmonson has a very eloquent way of writing and gives you a vivid description of how the station got started, the causes and tells you about the problem food not bombs had with police athorities and government officials. He talks about how obscure and twisted the government is and their reasons for smashing citizen autonomy and smashing moral to control peoples lives. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the struggle for the airwaves and struggle for citizen control. Another main issue is the struggle to help the homeless an to stop the police from killing off other human beings. I once again praise the writer for wonderful writing and extremely useful information about several issues that that the corporate media does not mention.

Rising Up
"I would contend that, upon walking out of your house and finding human feces on your doorstep, the first three people who should pop immediately to mind are the president of the United States, the governor of your state, and the mayor of your city, in that order. Because they are the ones most directly responsible for putting it there. The next rung down on the ladder of blame should be occupied by the corporations who put these people into their positions of power, and whose will they do. Or maybe they should all be up on the same rung together. The point is, we on the ground must find a way to pull that ladder out from under the people on top. Microradio affords us an opprotunity to at least begin to talk about doing just that." -- Page 29

"Rising Up: Class Warefare in America from the Streets to the Airwaves," by Richard Edmondson is a timeslice of activism in the San Francisco bay area and beyond in the final decade of our last century. It is a cogent view of the political climate of our times, a lucid account of socioeconomic hegemony, and an astute analysis of the rights and wrongs, horrors and joys of our society. Moreover, it is the Siren song to all of us who have been waiting on the sidelines, wringing our hands, wondering, "Can I really make a difference?"

"Rising Up" is the story of the birth of San Francisco Liberation Radio, a microradio station committed to providing a venue for the "progressive" issues not given attention in main stream corporate media. It introduces us to the progressive social movements in this country, in the last decade, weaving documented fact and personal impression in a clear and compelling fashion. "Rising Up" shows us how a group of people in San Francisco, not finding news of relevance reported in the newspaper, found no alternative other than to make their own news.

"Rising Up" gives the reader patient insight into the oddities of our society. From sci-fi based police tactics to the absurdity of arresting hundreds of non-violent volunteers distributing food to the homeless, readers will shake their fists in anger. Woven throughout all of this is the thread of the media, and its impact on our knowledge, views, and sense of reality and context.

Most powerful, however, is that "Rising Up" is not just a history of activism conducted by someone else, nor is it a "how-to" roadmap for readers wishing to get involved. "Rising Up" shows us the diversity of ways for individuals to take action, and the incredible urgency for each of us to do so, and yet it dows not point us down a particular path.

Enjoy!

Best coffee table book ever!
This book never gets old and all your guests will love it! The illustrations are quite entertaining and detailed. All pictures have that anime look with tweeked facial features to resemble some of the world's most flamboyant trendsetters such as Adam Ant, Damon Albarn and Marlon Brando. The translations are quite silly and even point out that marijuana is a pound a week accessory for the fashionable Rasta man. If only the author would do a follow up book to chart recent trends. Book also includes "family trees" of fashion trends and corresponding music trends.

Western Fashion Reviewed for Easterners
This is an excellent book, chaulked full of wonderfully detailed colour plates. Surrounding the plates are many tid-bits and factoids concerning the period and dress. Periods covered extend from the 1700's Baroque period to the Grunge period of the mid 1990's. Between these examples you will find European peasant-wear [ooh so chic!], Traditional Skinhead duds [non-racist, working class brits], Mods [traditional and neo alike], Flygirls [just like those chicks from 'In Living Color'], and EVERYTHING in between. Many many styles here! If anything ill could be said about this book, it would be that it doesn't have a second edition. Zeshu Takamura did a splendid job here, although some translations come up a tad bit off-kilter. All-in-all, this book is wonderful just for the history that accompanies every tiny fad. A must for all of you punk/ska/thrash types that seem to think that you invented a way of dressing on your own.

Great Books
I read ALL of the series about 15 years ago and they all were, by far, my favorite books. I would read them over and over again. I no longer have the books, but plan to buy them for my kids one day! Brings back a lot of good memories!

The chicken kid
This story is abaout a class picture that is taken in the park. A girl named Emily Arrow gets lost in a forest close to the park. Her class is having a picnic without her. She is scared that they might take the class picture without her, but her friends tell the teacher that she is missing and the teacher says go find her. After a while, they see her toy that she calls Uni. The piture was taken and Emily Arrow got A new Best Friend. They wen't back to class and shared what they did. They all lived happily ever after.
I think this is a good book. If you like to read books about getting new friends, then you'll like this book.

A Hong Kong Mardi Gras
This is another superlative police procedural mystery, set in the fictional Hong Bay section of Hong Kong, starring those inimitable Hong Kong police officers, Harry Fieffer (the boss), Christoper O'Yee (Amerasian), and Detectives Auden and Spencer, playing once again their combination of Marx Brothers and NYC's finest. Anyway, in this outing, the boys are challenged by the arrival of a science-fiction convention, with the usual fans dressed up as their favorite aliens, parades, and general mayhem. O'Yee is hunting for...well, we won't spoil it...something REALLY hard to find, while Audena and Spencer are looking for a mugger in a multi-story parking garage. Feiffer is looking for the fiend who is incinerating citizens for no apparent reason.
Marshall once again combines the zany with the suspenseful, and once again my eyebrows are sore from raising them at all the hair-raising (pun intended) hold-your-breath scenes. If you're looking for a great police procedural series, and one that doesn't take itself too seriously, you are in the right place in Hong Bay with Marhall's band of loonies. Long may they reign!

This book should NOT be out of print
Oh man, this is the funniest book in the whole series. Yes, it's part of a series, and the whole series is funny. It takes place in "Hong Bay" precinct in Hong Kong, pre-Chinese-takeover. (The introduction to each book in the series points out that the Chinese could have taken over Hong Kong years ago just by turning off the water tap.) Let's mention here, in case it is not obvious, that nothing in this book actually IS science fiction; it's murder mystery/police procedural.

The characters in the Hong Bay precinct station are a mixed lot of mostly Europeans and Asian-Europeans, or European-Asians, the inhabitants of the precinct are a complete cross section of would-be capitalist Chinese. There is a little bit of stereotyping, with the wily Chinese frequently outwitting the Europeans. Everyone, cop and civilian alike, is just a tad greedy and eager to get ahead or to get something someone else has.

In this particular book, an all-Asia science fiction convention is taking place. Like any science fiction convention, there are people who insist on attending in costume, and there are people who indulge a bit too much in recreational substances. In the opening chapters, we have a wonderful scene where the police station is trying to figure out where to put yet another costumed arrestee; various cells are already holding The Swarm - all of it - and other familiar sci-fi characters. As the new one is a midget, our lieutenant suggests stuffing him in the fire extinguisher closet, since that's the only space left.

I won't give away too much of the plot; let me just say that in addition to the murders, the side plot involving the little old lady piano player in the hotel is definitely worth following.

For fans of police procedurals, and of any murder mysteries, who have also ever been to any convention in a big hotel with a costume party, this is MUST reading- definitely worth doing an out-of-print search on. We have two copies, ha ha, so I can loan one out to friends without the risk of losing our only copy, because there are scenes I like to re-read when I need a good chuckle. The offbeat world of Hong Bay is reliably funny.

Some of the Best Fear Street
I've recently re-read this collection almost 3 years after the first time. Let me tell you, it only took 3 days (probably because it was after exams)! They're easy reading but shouldn't be read by young kids, because they gave me the chills. If you've grown up with Goosebumps but they're starting to bore you, this series is the next step up.

The best is probably The Face. It's twists and turns will leave you not wanting to put it down! Next comes The Confession and not far behind lies What Holly Heard. I'd say TC and WHH are just about equal, but TC has more twists.

If you're bored and would like an interesting night, pick these up. They're not as scary as a Stephen King novel, of course, but for teens they'll definately do!

This is the best book I have ever read by R.L. Stine! A must reader

An unforgettable collection of anecdotes from eyewitnesses
Compiled and edited by Thomas T. Noland, September 11, 2001: Stories From 55 Broad Street is an unforgettable collection of anecdotes from eyewitnesses to the horror and aftermath of the September 11th attacks. Profound, meaningful, raw, and real, September 11, 2001: Stories From 55 Broad Street is an utterly unforgettable collection and a highly recommended addition to school and community library systems.

A book to keep to remember.
I read this book as slowly as I could. This is an amazing account of 20 some odd people living a 48 hour period of stillness and reflection. I could not put this book down. Each story is the same, yet amazingly different in such a moving way. The reflections keep your heart remembering patriotism and freedom in our great country. It is so wonderful to see how New Yorkers were so helpful on such an earth moving - physically and emotionally - day. The authors are good normal people with many insights to share with those of us who watched that day unfold.

Marvelous Bedtime Storybook
This is a marvelous bedtime storybook. It contains twelve stories. The excellent is ¡§Good night, Rubber Duckie¡¨. All we know that Ernie can¡¦t sleep without his rubber duckie. Bert gave a helping hand. However, they cannot find it everywhere in the house, including refrigerator, closet, toy box ¡K. Then they give up. Suddenly, Ernie found it under its pillow. Such story makes my three-year-old son laugh. Apart form this story, there are other good stories, like ¡§ Betty LOU lends a hand¡¨. This story teaches children that sometimes the strongest, the tallest, the cleverest and the loudest ones cannot help. But the smallest one, like Betty LOU can lend a hand. In a word, it's a marvelous storybook for toddler.

A fantastic compilation of bedtime stories.
I loved this book as a child and want to share it with my child. Sesame Street's best loved characters are included in each story. I remember reading them when I was young and laughing out loud. This book is a great investment for children.
