A Great Book To Read Anywhere, Anytime!!!
Coahoma Street is a wonderful book that captures the mind from the first page to the last. I can only hope on another novel by this author as his style is unique and very descriptive. It feels as if the story is going on around you. Please read this book if you haven't, you wont be sorry! I already know what my entire family is getting for Christmas this year.... their own copies of Coahoma Street!!

Easy to pick up, Hard to put down.
A very interesting reality-based, fictional account of life, love, and hate in a Mississippi river delta town through the eyes and heart of a young man who was there. I read it during lunch on three consecutive days, and the last lunch was quite extended as I could not put the book down. The dialog and the images that Jerry draws with his words, take you there and let you see/feel how it really was then.

I have never been in Mississippi, but I have "lived, fallen in love, and fought" there in the 60s a few weeks ago, and since I started to read "Coahoma Street" again, I'll "go do it again" one more time. I almost never read a book twice, but this one is special. It is cheaper, more real, and far better, than a movie.

Curl up with this good book this winter.

The oldest profession - order or chaos?
It is hard to believe this is the writer's first attempt. It has all the action and character development of someone with the experience of James Patterson or Scott Turow. This book falls in the category of 'can't put it down'! Hope to see more.

Fun Book!!!
I'm posting this as many places I can because I enjoyed the (heck) out of this book! I spend most of the day on the road and don't have much time for something that doesn't grab me. This was non-stop action; a REAL story-not contrived in any way-and a nice big surprise at the end...what more could I ask for. If this is the guy's first novel I hope he writes more.

DIVISION STREET
Published in Paperback by Pantheon Books (12 March, 1982)

Carl Sandburg's Chicago
Chicago is the city of big shoulders. Carl Sandburg said that. Studs Terkel, in "Division Street: America," gives us the names of those people on whom those big shoulders rest. Like Edgar Lee Masters' collection of poetic epitaphs, "Spoon River Anthology," Terkel titles each chapter with the name of those whose lives are being described.

Division Street runs East-West through Chicago, ending at Lake Shore Drive. It is a major road, and Terkel could've chosen any avenue to name his book. What is important is that it cuts through the center of the city, and, symbolically, into and through the heart of it all.

Each story is a page or two. Some are five or six pages. None are too long. Terkel knows when to finish the story. However, to call the short chapters 'stories' isn't really accurate. They are edited conversations with people you might have known if you lived in Chicago in 1967 when this was first published. Some of the people are cops. Others are teachers, cabbies and nuns. There is even a couple CEOs and advertising guys. Terkel manages to connect with each interviewee, and allow them to do the talking.

Everything you've heard about Studs Terkel or this book is true. It is fantastically voyeuristic, and terrifically revealing without ever being cheap or exploitive. These people are so familiar, as if you overheard Terkel chatting with them at a diner or coffeehouse.

I wholeheartedly recommend "Division Street: America" by Studs Terkel.

Anthony Trendl

A Tremendous Accomplishment
Words can't even begin to describe what a powerful and moving book this is. Studs Turkel shows that he is an American treasure with each book he writes.

this collection of cartoons is amazingly funny. i have read it over and over and am still amused. it offers a hilarious view of childhood from four main characters. buy two- one for yourself, and one for a friend

Wonderful! Funny, sad, evocative.
Lynda Barry's messy, amateurish drawings evoke childhood better than just about anything else I've read. She risks overparticularity in describing the specific time and place when she grew up, but evades it consistently because she has such a great eye and ear for the things that make childhood experience universal. Anyone will find things to recognize and identify with (and laugh at, of course) in this and her other books.

Even her flaws -- the crude drawing style, her lapses of grammar and spelling -- help to get her point across. You couldn't call her stuff childlike -- it's too sophisticated for that -- but it is reminiscent of childhood, without ever being condescending or imitative.

While most of her work is clearly intended as humor (and much of it is indeed howlingly funny), there is a haunting, sweet sadness of tone about a great deal of it too. Barry's not afraid to tackle serious incidents of loss, parental indifference, failure in school, and getting in trouble, but the kids in her stories seem always to take the bad things that happen to them in stride, with aplomb -- as children so often really do.

Fantastic Profile Of One Of America's Finest Designers.
The collaborators on this comprehensive tribute to Edward Wormley have obviously put their heart and soul into this literary work. Edward Wormley was one of the special few. Without the research behind this book.. many future furniture designers and mid-century furniture fans would have been unable to hear the story of Edward and his find work at Dunbar.

Buy this book... it will be something to cherish.

Great Book On A True Modern Thought Leader
Extremely thoughtful and comprehensive presentation on the life and times of a noted Modern Design Icon, Edward Wormley.

His fresh unpretentious approach to style and furniture desgin is refreshing and much needed in an often complex world. This book is often out-of-print.

Like his classic designs for Dunbar furniture - this book will probably fall into the category of an American Modern design collectible...

Enjoy!

Very Cute!
I read this when the series first came out. I think it's for younger kids than the original Polk St. series was intended for, and the author is wonderful (I have written to her when I was little and have several hand-written letters from her!) she's a sweet, talented and creative "lady next door"!
I think I like the original Polk St. books better, perhaps because I was always a little older than the intended age group (I was 9 and 1/2 when I first started reading the original books; I read them even if they were for younger kids beacuse they were interesting, enjoyable, and I wanted to become a teacher/author too.)
These books about Stacie made me giggle, they were so cute. I couldn't stand her classmate Twana; she was obnoxious. I felt like slapping that big mouthed brat silly for being mean to Stacie! Shame on you, Twana!

fancy feet review
I thought this book was pretty good. I liked how Stacey's kindergarten class was having a store. I thought that it was a good idea. It was cute when Stacey snooped in Mrs. Zachary's desk and found the fake money to spend at the store. Mrs. Zachary is Stacey's teacher. I liked when kids brought in stuff for the store such as teddy bears, banks, books, and other things. I reccomend this book.

A "warm fuzzy feeling" book. You don't want it to end.
This is a very sweet book. The author writes so you truly "feel" her words. The author's grandmother, Ociee, is a delight. I hope Milam Propst writes a sequel as I would enjoy reading more about Ociee in her later years. I have bought at least 6 copies for gifts for my friends.

Makes you feel good all over!
If you want to read a nice book that gives you a warm, cozy feeling, this is for you..no violence, no bad words. The author's charachters come alive and by the end you feel you know the protagonist, Ociee, personally.

I am ordering additional copies for several friends and family members.

I hope Milam will come out with a sequel. I want to know more about Ociee.

Indispensable, funny, and fascinating history
Although I am a New Orleans native, I had no idea there was so much fascinating history behind the names of the streets. Chase is legendary, and his stories have the same amusing light bite of his political cartoons. Great reading, and you don't have to be familiar with the city to enjoy it.

Must reading for those who love New Orleans!
There's no place like New Orleans! John Churchill Chase eloquently chronicles the origins and development of this most fascinating of American cities in his humorous masterpiece "Frenchmen, Desire, Good Children." Learn why the "French Quarter" isn't French (p. 58). Learn why "Craps Street" was renamed "Burgundy Street" to save the reputation of three New Orleans churches (p. 85). Learn why "Bourbon Street" wasn't named after "bourbon" whiskey (p. 19). Learn why New Orleans was the scene of the first "American Revolution" (p. 55). Learn the origins of the word "Creole" (p. 73), and why the Creoles considered the first American settlers in Louisiana "barbarians." (chapter 6). "Frenchmen, Desire, Good Children" is fun, fascinating, and illustrated. It's must reading for those who love New Orleans! Read it before your next New Orleans visit. It will greatly enhance your enjoyment and understanding of the "Big Easy." David (the Nac) Naccari, New Orleans Historian and Professional Speaker

Comprehensive and Concise
as an entrepreneur and VC investor tfor more than 20 years, i higly recoomend the book. extremely useful insights for both roles, which indicate how experienced these authors and their advisors are. the book covers all important aspects of the business, along with useful tips and watch outs known only the most experienced people in this business. By far the best book in its category.

Excellent Overview
by far the most comprehensive and concise book on entrepreneurship and venture capital investment. The book takes a rather unique approach of introducing fairly complicated issues in a straighforward fashion. The authors are looking at all aspects of VC investments and businedd development with a 'value investing" approach, something I liked a lot. warning of fads and bubbles and legal pitfalls, they provide excellent insights that only experienced investros and entrepreneurs know
how important they are. As an entrepreneur and VC investor for more than 20 years,I highly recommend the book.

Why "The Street" Succeeds
Sesame Street, one of television's most significant shows, continues to educate children after 30-plus years on air. The success of the program is due, in large part, to a focus on research and curriculum development. The curriculum has evolved over the history of the show from being primarily cognitive to including many affective elements. This book shows the development of Sesame Street's curriculum and the development of other media. It is a must read book for those interested in childhood development, children's television, and fans of the show. After reading this book, one appreciates the fact that the success of the show is no accident.

An impressive synthesis of key research studies
"G" Is For Growing: Thirty Years Of Research On Children And Sesame Street is an impressive synthesis of key research studies done on one of the most influential, pervasive, and enduring children's televisions programs since its inception in 1969. The contributors examine, analyses and comment upon the processes by which educational content and research are integrated into production for a show which began for the purpose of preparing preschool children for school and went on to become a world-wide cultural icon. Very highly recommended reading for students of the television and its cultural influences, "G" Is For Growing also explores methodological issues in conducting media-based research with young children; the longitudinal impact of preschooler viewing of educational versus non-educational television; and cross-cultural differences in the treatment of educational content.
