To the publisher: please reprint this book.
In total agreement with other readers, I admire this book very much. I wanted recently to buy two copies, one for each granddaughter and lo, it is out of print. Furthermore, I have listed it in the books for children section of the yet-to-be published 7th edition of -Science Experiences for the Early Childhood Year. And I read it to my classes. I hope it comes out in paperback!

Great, and looks like little kids being active!
A wonderful, seasonable drama that involves all the colorful activities that small children are fascinated by, i.e. dogs, wind and leaves, outdoor messes, etc...

Excellent read-aloud book
Shirley Hughes wrote this with a musical ear for language. It is presently my hands-down favorite for reading to my two-year old. It is writing that adults can appreciate for almost haiku-like grace, and that appreciation can be passed on to the youngest readers. The illustrations match the poems superbly, and there are four mural-like double-page spreads, one for each season, that are each pictures the child can wander about visually, and I have had long talks with my son about what he sees in these pictures. An almost ideal children's book in my opinion.

A realistic yet hopeful look at gang life.
Peace in the Streets is a realistic yet hopeful look at gang life. Hernandez uses vivid imagery and poignant stories to weave a picture of children immersed in gang life. The book recreates the lives of the students that participated in his small alternative school in East L.A. Peace in the Streets portrays the children not as violent monsters but as adolescents lost in an imperfect system and society. Hernandez possesses the unique ability to understand and eloquently portray the path most children followed before entering gang life. He writes with an empathy and sensitivity rarely seen in books of this nature. As an educator working in at-risk schools I found this book to be very enlightening. Peace in the Streets is one of the few books in this genre that offers incredible insight into the lives of gang members while providing a step by step plan for communities to help their youths. This book is a pleasurable and necessary read for educators, parents, and communities struggling with issues related to gangs.

This book can give you hope if you work with gang members
As someone who has worked with gang members for a number of years, this book really resonated with me. It is so hard to communicate to people who gang members are behind the facades they wear. Arturo Hernandez's real life experiences speak powerfully to both the hopelessness and the hope to be found in America's inner-city areas. He also provides insights as to the underlying problems which have created our gang problems today, and hypothesizes about possible solutions, many of which seem viable based on my personal experiences. This book is a must-read, particularly for those in education-related fields dealing with gangs.

This is a very enlightening book on gang violence
I read this book for my political science class and I loved it. It gave me my first look at gang violence. The author gives you a stunning first hand account on not the gangs as a whole, but the kids as indviduals. He helps you to see that these kids are all different. Some are good in school, others can't read... he helps us, who do not have to deal with these problems, see that there is no "typical kid or family". Every student who is thinking about going into social work, Psychology, policics, teaching, etc... should read this book. It will open your eyes.

The Story of an Anti-Hero
This is an excellent book and very well written. It is the story of an anti-heroine who is easy to admire, but very difficult to like. My children disliked Street's arrogance, her disdain for training and the negative attitude that robbed her of the complete success that could have followed her natural courage and abilities. It is nevertheless a great example to show young women how to believe in themselves, to persevere in the face of setbacks, and the importance of courage. The author did an excellent job of portraying how very far Street could have gone if she had accompanied her courage with judgement, and her confidence with kindness. It was particularly inspiring to my daughters.

We now ski, for the first time!
After reading this inspiring book, we have found courage to shred the slopes ourselves. The author obviously has a true love of skiing himself, and we think he is way overdue to write a companion piece on Hillary Lind, and to check out the wild slopes of Alaska. We look forward to reading future books from this outstanding children's author! Kudos from Juneau!

Interesting, inspiring children's book.
Picabo Street is a very easy and entertaining book to read even for adults. Any child should find it interesting and inspiring. It challenges chidren to have a dream and work hard to achieve it. Rhoda Carlstedt

Rose Street Revisited
In a time in our society when the meaning and importance of family is becoming lost, it is powerfully heartwarming to enter into the Leone family through the author's words. It is a close family who makes family a priority. Mr. Leone writes easily and with such a loving and amused perspective. He brings readers into the world of his family where they can picture the events, the people and the surroundings. The poems are poignant, the stories are warm and humorous, and the recipes and photographs remind readers that these are real people.

The joys of life celebrated by a funny and thoughtful author
I just adored this volume. Small in size. Hefty in soul. Like "Rose Street" this follow-up reveals many things: A man's love and admiration for his children through sweet, whimsical verse. Essays that revere the past without disengaging it from the present. While "Rose Street" is an historic novel of sorts, "Rose Street Revisited" is like a chest of memorabilia, newly discovered from its hidden nook in the corner of the attic. Open it and out comes, gloriously in no particular order, butterflies that have been patiently waiting forever to fly. Poems. Essays. Photographs. All that celebrate Leone's Italian-American culture. All that celebrate the joyful mysteries of family life. All that extend a torch for all of us to accept as we celebrate life today and remember today's blessings tomorrow.

Rose Street Revisted
Having read both Rose Street and Rose Street Revisted, I can say that both books are a great tribute to the generations that have left us, and on a more personal note, a beautiful way to pass down to the new generation a family's rich past. Great reading! Very heartwarming! I loved them both! -Traci O.

Author's notes
It's the author speaking (I only put the 5 stars because you had to put something!) and really I'd just like to thank the readers who posted such glowing reviews for their kind words. Salem Street was my first book published as Anna Jacobs, back in 1994 and it's still in print. I've just had my 21st novel published (12 as Anna Jacobs). ....

You'll rush to get the sequel...
This is a wonderfully well-developed work of historical fiction. The characters are interesting, and the storylines are engrossing. When I finished it, I was thrilled to know she had already completed other novels in the series.

Could not put it down!!!
Just finished reading it, and now am looking for the rest in the series. Really great book. Kept you interested the whole way through. Shows you that no matter where you start in life, YOU have the capability to overcome anything! A must read!!

A must-read for Flyers fans!
Having grown up a Flyers fan and hearing Gene Hart for many years, I loved this book. It's a great combination of how Gene became associated with the Flyers, as well as a timeline of the Flyers' history from the beginning up to the early 90's.

An Excellent Book by the Greatest Announcer
I first started listening to Gene Hart calling Flyers games in 1968. He was a wonderful announcer when the Flyers were mediocre and was absolutely superb when they were on top. I've heard a lot of sports broadcasting in a lot of cities around the country in the last 35 years and no one else in any sport approaches Gene's work. I was disappointed when he stopped announcing and deeply saddened with his passing last year. His book is every bit as fine as his radio and television work. Of the several Flyers books in print, his supasses the others in intimacy, first hand recollections and general nostalgic value. I sure miss Gene Hart, but this book and some tapes of television broadcasts he did are my most treasured sports memorabilia. He is a Hall of Famer and his writing belongs there too.

The best Flyers book, by the best ever play-by-play legend!
This book is probably the best history of the Flyers that you could find out there. Full Spectrum ranks right up there, but it doesn't have Mr. Heart's personality like SCORE! does. I'm gonna miss Gene.......

Excellent!
I am an Educational Sign Language Interpreter.... I purchased this book to use with my children. The signs are clear and accurate, and the illustrations are colorful and fun to look at. This was a nice addition to our home library.

Sign Language with Preschoolers
I taught preschool last year to a group of 3 to 5 year old children. In 9 short weeks, they learned the alphabet and 3 to 5 words for each letter of the alphabet. For preschool graduation they performed Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in sign; what a spectactular sight it was. The kids were in awe watching their teacher, and learning, not once did I find a child bored. Most of these kids are still learning at home with their moms or dads, and can still do "their" song. This is a wonderful book and learning tool for these kids. As an adult, I found it very un-intimidating, and was able to learn with my "kids."

Oldie, but goodie!
This is the first sign language book I bought for my hearing children. It still is one I take to the schools when I talk to hearing children about what it is like to be Deaf. This book is simple and basic, and years ago tied in with what was taught on Sesame Street. Since I haven't watch the show in years, I don't know if they teach ASL actively on it anymore. But I highly recommend this book as a beginning source for children, and for libraries to have on hand as an introduction to ASL. With the increasing need for ASL interpreters for the Deaf in court, in medical situations, and in schools...it is absolutely a priority that children and teenagers be encouraged to learn ASL as a foreign language. My terps make 25 -30 dollars an hour, and I've heard it is much more than that in some states such as California and Texas. Besides, the Deaf always appreciate it when someone bothers to learn their language for a change. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh, klsst23@pitt.edu

EXCELLENT
My 2.5 years old son falls in love with this book. He reads it every night. Every night, he will take out this book from the shelf and asks me to tell what the sesame street muppet did in the pages. Once I stop, he will say : "Turn the page, Mum, No stop. Please read me this book!" If you don't ask him to stop reading, he will continue to read this book till late night. This book is really a unusal dictionary that the family with little child should have one.

Sorry it's out of print!
This book is not just for toddlers. It is the only dictionary I have seen that puts standard sight words into meaning. Particulary children with learning disabilities have a very difficult time understand the concept of sight words. With a very playful, visual and active descriptive of the sight words, it brings life to the meaning of the words, and it eases in the retention of these words when reading. This book is excellent for children with reading disabilities - up until the 3rd or 4th grade.

An excellent book to grow up with
This book is wonderful for children from ages 2 and up. My 2 year old is not yet ready to learn definitions, but the book is filled with colorful, easy to see pictures, in which he can identify his beloved Sesame Street characters, as well as the activities that they portray. This is one of the few books that he doesn't want to put down. So many pages makes it something new each and every time we pick it up. I cannot tell you the extent of the knowledge he has gained from this book. Several of his daycare teachers have told me how amazing he is in what he knows and comprehends for a child his age. His knowledge and perception of things took off immediately following our Sesame Street Dictionary reading sessions. This is a book that will continue to give as he grows older and begins learning the concepts and definitions of these words, not to mention when he begins reading and writing!

Wall Street brokerages are working hard these days to attract women investors. Publishers are, too. One of many recent titles on money management for women, Savvy Investing for Women is more informative than most. Marlene Jupiter, a former Wall Street derivatives trader, takes her subject and her readers seriously. The book provides a short course on economics, on portfolio diversification (jargon for "Don't put all your eggs in one basket"), and on the basics of buying stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. There's even a chapter on technical analysis, an abstruse topic neglected by most popular books but described by Jupiter with admirable clarity.
Average review score:

The title is misleading.
The title is misleading; this book is NOT only for women. This book contains solid investment advice from someone who's "been there and done it", who has worked her way up from being a secretary to being a vice president and became a millionaire along the way. A lot of men can learn from her.

Savvy Investments for Women by Jupiter
This is an excellent investment guide for beginning investors.
It teaches how to develop investment intuition and savvy.
There is a practical component in the advice which tells
the buyer/investor to beware (Caveat Emptor). The author cites
important investment vehicles; such as, the "Investor's Business
Daily" which points toward important trends in the market.
The book stresses the need to look at multiple criteria for
investing to include:
o growth stocks and industries
o capitalization
o revenue growth rates
o price/earnings ratios
o the management team
o treatment of employees
o underwriter representation
o financial analyst track records

The work discusses all-important mutual fund fee structures,
the benefits and pitfalls of derivatives and a whole host of
investments too numerous to list here.

Numerous risks are cited including systematic market risk,
inflation, interest rate fluctuations and consumer credit.
The book is well worth the price for a beginning investor.

A bright light for novice investors
Thankyou Marlene! This book was JUST what I needed.. I am not a complete dummy to the world of finance, but really needed a good landscape lesson on financial investing. This book was EXCELLENT for the quasi-novice. Provided a great baseline and advice for next step learning. The tone of the book was easy reading & enjoyable.. not too financially intimidating at all. The book covered every inch of investing. Including investing in horses! Not something I would do, but great cocktail conversation. I agree with an earlier reviewer- this book is NOT just for women.

Searching for Mercy Street: My Journey Back to My Mother, Anne Sexton

An unsparing account of the anguish and fierce love between Linda Gray Sexton and her brilliant, unstable and ultimately self-destructive mother, Anne Sexton. Anne taught Linda how to write, how to see, how to imagine; and only Linda could have written a book that captures so vividly the intimate details and lingering emotions of their lives together. Searching for Mercy Street speaks to everyone who admires Anne Sexton and to every daughter or son who knows the pain of an imperfect childhood.
Average review score:

"Mommie Dearest", deja vu
I have never been a great fan of Anne Sexton, the poet. But after reading the memoir written by her daughter, I doubt that I would cherish the words the poet wrung from the souls of her young.

To grow up in a household where genius resides is a terrible burden. I find it amazing that Sexton's daughters, especially Linda, survived at all. It is a book painted with a palette of despair, but never mean-spirited. It was, after all, a story begging to be told:"...I would bring her back to life, but to do so would require that I give up my life to her; to do so would require an act of cannibalism on her part, to reverse this process that every other mother and daughter engage in- the mother-daughter dance, birth and death..."

Linda Gray Sexton saves the most painful revelation until last, and it becomes the defining action I will most associate with Anne Sexton. This poet, this mother, unable to attain her own epiphany, extends the cycle of emotional violence into another generation, and the betrayed becomes the betrayer. Linda Gray Sexton did what she could, finally said "no more". This is by no means an indictment of the daughter. Rather, I applaud her choice for life and freedom, for her own future, for her own children.

Linda Sexton Earns Honorary Name "Gray"
As the reader learns, the name "Gray" was given to family members who would attain the writer's gift. Respecting this honorary heirloom, Linda's words flow beautifully as she recalls her life with impressive detail. Linda expresses discomfort in revisiting the haunting moments of her life, but she doesn't stop reaching for information. Instead, she keeps pinching her insides until she's squeezed out each emotion, sharing her life and Anne's impact on it with the most lucid honesty. What courage to be able to look at oneself as closely as Linda does!

While enjoying the detailed account of humanity, I also learned the story of Anne Sexton, a brilliant artist and complex person who suffered a lot, and caused much suffering-- as well as joy.

This book also demonstrates how writing poetry or even non-fiction as therapy can truly become art if the writer is real, fearless and generous with detail. I appreciated the educational value of the information about the emotional impact of mental illness on an individual and a family.

Anyone who writes, ever feels blue, or appreciates learning about the mind of the artist should read this book. I also recommend reading "Touched with Fire", Kay Redfield Jamison's study of Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament, as well as "An "Unquiet Mind", her autobiography. Also, reading more of Sexton's poetry (many poems are excerpted in Linda Gray Sexton's book) completes the picture.

[Linda, Anne would be pleased to know how well you have learned to see.~JAD]

Opened My Eyes
I worked with Linda closely for a year when she had small children in the Mid-1980's. I was very touched and disturbed by this book. I found it to the point, but forgiving. I commend Linda for her resiliency and candor. I know that to write this book she had to rediscover many guarded memories. I encourage all to read it. Anne Sexton was a complicated, brilliant artist. Her life was fascinating to read about, especially from her daughter's intimate perpective. The poems that were included helped me to more fully understand the artist and woman through the different stages of her life. I hope Linda writes again.
