Terriffic first novel
I found "The House on Benefit Street" at the 2d annual New England Crime Bake, where author Donna Montalbano was on a panel. My interest piqued, I bought a copy and thoroughly enjoyed it. The main character is the house itself, and I want it myself. The protagonist is newly widowed and making major, unexpected, changes in her life. Against all odds and advice, she buys an old house in Providence. Only after she moves in does she discover that an unsolved crime was committed there. Page-turning writing, great sense of place, people I'd like to have lunch with. The occasional chuckle doesn't hurt. Recommended for mystery fans who can do without the blood-and-guts.

Will keep your attention as you feel like you are there!
This was an easy book to read, associate with each of the characters and relate to the changing scenes - almost to the point where you begin to feel a part of the story yourself. This may be the case as I was born and continue to live in RI and can relate to all of the places mentioned.
The story was detailed to the point that it drew me in and held my attention - making me read more and more.
Even now that I have completed the book, its enthralling my mind causing me to have flash thoughts of events that occurred in the book and feeling like the story is continuing to unfold, like the characters are people I know.
I hope to see MORE from this author - she has my attention!

a great read
The House on Benefit Street is my favorite book this year. I loved the characters and the setting. As someone who does not live in Providence, this book has made me want to visit. The author definitely captured my imagination.

A charming children's classic
I first read Bernard Waber's The House on East 88th Street as a child and was capitivated by Lyle the Crocodile. How I loved this story about a bright green crocodile living in a bathtub in a New York City brownstone.Though frightened at first, the Primm family is won over by their housemate. Lyle is amazing, he takes out the trash, brings in the milk, (this book was first published in 1962!)helps around the house, and loves a nice, hot bath complete with Turkish caviar! (We could all use a Lyle) The story of Lyle does not end here; Waber went on to write seven more titles about this lovable creature. Out of all the Lyle books, this is his best-known. This charming children's classic is suitable for small children between the ages of four and eight.

A great series
When I got pregnant with my son, my mother sent a box of old books she had saved from my childhood. The House in East 88th Street and Lyle and the Birthday Party were in the box. These two books have become favorites of my son as well as my husband and I. I'm glad to see that they are still in print, as I plan to purchase a few more from the series.

The magical world of Lyle
The story of Lyle the crocodile who is discovered in the bathtub when Joshua and his family move into their new home. My mother first read this book to me when I was four years old. I am now 35! It is a truly wonderful childrens book. One of those that lingers in your memory as a world you inhabited as a child. Myself and my sisters adored the Lyle books and we are now buying them for our families. Endearing, amusing, full of the joys and sadnesses of life. Lyle is a childs world through a crocodiles eyes. Try them all. You and your children (of all ages) will love them!.

Easy to read, cheap and interesting
Why five stars: cause it's a nice book for those that know wall street without really understanding how it works (so great title). Still it is soft but the content is rather strong, not too boring, short and the p[resentation is very good. Built aroud lots of questions-answers, that might interest a very large public.
Advice: Buy it cause it is very cheap for the information it provides compared to other books
Note: That is a great introductory book

Investment information I could understand
I found this book to be an excellent source of investment information for a novice investor such as myself. Written in common English, the author doesn't try to impress the reader with big words and far out theory. I recommend this to any person who wants to learn the basics of investing.

A very good introduction to investing
This is one of the best books I have found for expaining investing to a novice like myself. The author has done a good job of discussing difficult topics in an easily understandable manner. I highly recommend this book.

Great Little Book
This is great for little hands and short attention spans. I drop this book in the diaper bag and take it to restaurants for a quick distraction.

My daughter also loves to "read" it to her little brother. It's also a great little book of simple opposites.

Good things come in small packages!!
Note to parents - the physical size of this book is actually quite small, smaller than the routine "Spot" board books for example. It's fine for small hands, but in it's "new" condition, the pages need to be "broken in" to make reading easier. BUT don't let the small size of the book scare you off - small does not mean short. It's a good length with excellent pictures.

Aside from it's size, this book is a sure fire hit!! It features everyday situations on each page, with one picture being the opposite of the other e.g. Ernie is at the front of the line, Bert is at the back of the line.

Very cute and accesible review of opposites starring Ernie
If your toddler loves Sesame Street, they will love this little book. It is perfectly sized to slip into the Diaper bag. It features everyday situations in the bath, at the playground, or at home, so my 16 mo old son could follow along from the first read. Be aware there is not a single picture of Elmo. Its fine by us since my son is indifferent to Elmo but is a huge fan of Ernie who is featured on many pages with Bert, and Cookie shows up on several pages too.

thomas, guide me to your leader
i heard the hype about how popular this book was, who was i to stand in the way of this books progress. progress u ask? why of course, this book is probably the one most riviting influencial piece of american literature to date. it provides a compass, a compass to the soul and to our hearts. and itll give u direction in life... page 345-C4 put chills down my spine because it hit home.

Full of wonder and excitement!
Suprisingly, Thomas Bros. has again, given us a book to put on our list of "Top Books ever Written." Its beguilingly sexy appeal to life will keep you on your seats as you finally come to the realization that yes, even YOU will one day seek the help of...THE GUIDE! But don't take my word for it, read page 4697 and you too will become believer.

Surprise twist!
I have to agree with the other reader-- that surprise twist at the end of 110 (the freeway, not the page) was so unexpected! It's true, every page tells a story, and you absolutely won't believe 767 E5.

Every recipe I've tried has been delicious
I work in Dearborn, Michigan, home to 30,000 people of Arab origin. I therefore often eat authentic cuisine from that part of the Mediterranean and all the recipes I've tried from this book stand up to what I find on the streets (OK, in the restaurants) here. I'm also lucky that I can go to a local Arab grocery and easily find some of the specialty items she uses, like preserved lemons. You don't need that, though, to succeed with her recipes. You can even buy your spices at the grocery, but, really, wouldn't you rather get the quality stuff from Penzey's?

The Turkish seasoned kabobs (p. 158) are now one of my sumer grilling specialties. I pair them with the feta cheese salad (p. 33) and a crisp rose or sauvignon blanc. Try the garlic sauce ("Thum") on p. 72, but understand that she's right when she says "...it will make you a social leper for a day or two afterward." The garlic exudes from your pores, but oh, it was delicious going in!

A culinary adventure
I love that for a novice cook there are enough simple recipes that I am not completely intimadated. The author takes us on an adventure that you can taste and smell through the pages of this book. I only wish that the pictures were in color. They would be as rich in texture and feeling as the writing. The authors love of her subject comes through and I am definitely going to prepare a few of the dishes. It's given me a reason to create my own culinary adventure.

Absolutely First Rate
This book is a gem. The idea behind it is so smart -- to focus on all those great snacks and street foods they sell in Italy, France, Spain, Turkey and elsewhere on the Mediterranean.

The author really brings both the region and the cuisine to life. The recipes sound great and I look forward to using the book as a reference. But, as important to me, the book captures all the excitement, the flavors and rhythms of life in the Mediterranean.

I couldn't recommend this book more highly.

Wonderful Read
This is an excellent book. Very good story, written in a gripping style, and hard to put down. The action builds and builds, but what I really like about Neon Streets is it is about something. Strong themes, and it made me think.

A VIBRANT AND VIVID VISIONARY
comparatively as innovative as the "Grapes of Wrath" of J. Steinbeck fame. an adventure that grabs you from the first crisp page till the last. a true book that is hard to put down without finishing. the characters truely come to life with a flare in this real world senerio dealing with topic's of homlessness in our own country. first you will laugh, then you'll cry, and after pacing the room for a while you will come to the conclusion that you must read it again.

Totally Excellent
What an incredible book! Where has this guy been all these years? He certainly didn't come out of nowhere, and be able to write such lucid, even lyrical prose. A wonderful exposition on greed versus homelessness, and all of the misery that a very bad system for housing and dealing with the poor seems to produce. I loved the character of Patrice Orosco, and "Red Dog," but Teddy O'Reilly and Oscar No Name really stole my heart! This is a great, great book! It needs to be discovered.

Nowt New but a Good One to Have Around
Your standard compilation of quotes from the boys. Especially apt for the Manics considering Nicky's big mouth, wee Sean's bitter take on everything and James' frankness. Very few bands merit a collection of "dumb-things-we-said-to-the-press" book, but MSP do.

The musings of Richey, Nicky, Sean and James
If you've read all their interviews you probably have read the book in its entirety. Still, I think it's worth a read--it arranges the quotes in sections which keep the quotes related. And it contains the sentences that you may have missed buried in a hefty paragraph, but which spring out on you when they are isolated on the page. A great book.

Nicky, James, Richey & Sean at their very best
This book is simply a collection of quotes from the Manics. If you`re a fan you will love reading the toughts and theories of Nicky, James, Richey & Sean at their very best.If you`re not a fan, why not?

Excellent!!!!
I highly recommend this book for all women interested in creating success in all aspects of their lives.

The Millionairess Across the Street
You've got to read this book if you are a woman! Jennifer and Bettina teach women that we should start looking at our earnings like a man does his. How come we give our money away? Don't negotiate the deal for bigger bucks? After this book, I took their advice to heart and managed to secure $4,000 more dollars in a work deal. I've made more in a few months than I made last year because the book taught me how to look at success and work and money. I've also learned to ask for what I want! This book changed my life. It's also a quick, easy and inspirational read. Keep your copy in your briefcase. That's where I keep mine.

Not Just For Women
I found this book to be very real. Nitty -Gritty advice and common sense approach. Though I've read enough books and didn't expect much new, i found this to be one of the best books I've found and have recommended it to many friends - both men and women. For anyone of either gender who is 'coming from behind', who hasn't been graced with the unquestioned belief in their rightful place among the population of the successful, this book is an eyeopener.

A Psychiatrist Comments
The author tells a modern allegory about the sacredness of the human soul, its needs, longings and hidden potentials for healing. It poses that Mental Health Services fail in the long run by offering people medication rather than a movement toward wholeness. He demonstrates a path with heart where all roads--both for therapist and client--lead inward to creative and mystical elements.

This is a must read for therapists, patients, clients or anyone on a voyage of personal discovery.

Don't miss it!
Wish there were more novels with such touching subject matter. Exceptional!

A refreshing humanistic view of life and psychotherapy.
Mystics in the street is a refreshing humanistic view of the essential aspects of psychotherapy: spirituality, mythology, ritual, love, grace.

The author's grasp of the vital creative, imaginative and mystical elements of life relieves us of our sense of personal inadequacy by confirming it then transcending it. He affirms our intrinsic wisdom enabling us to embrace our own process of being and becoming. This book renews my sense of enthusiasm in my practice of treating people vs. disorders.
