Broad Street
You're right on the streets and in the hearts of the characters in this book. You'll be hooked from the beginning. Take a peak into the world of Philadelphia that many of us are not familiar with.

DWYER WRITES FIRE
Whenever I thought of Philadelphia I thought of Brotherly Love and Quakers but the aching characters in Tom Dwyer's haunting first novel Broad Street spend their lives quaking in their shoes and pursuing loves that are decidely not brotherly. Nobody wears a white hat in this novel, but the question for the guys sporting smudged greys are these: How does one preserve the tradional values worth preserving: love of family, the purity of music, and, of course, honor among thieves, when there are so many truly viscious scumbags out there trying to hurt you and your loved ones. With wistful imagery his characters "race the river" of life in, through, and around Phillie's heart of darkness, to the rhythms of the Jazz Masters, as with powerful analogies "a mean purple was already circling her eye like a storm" his prose carries you to the story's searingly sad denoument and to the bittersweet understanding all grownups, (to be grownups) reluctantly must reach: You do the best you can. And by any means necessary. Warning to Timid Readers: Though Tom Dwyer generously offers us music throughout his novel as a lifeline to holiness and a balm again the meaness all around us, make no mistake about it: Dwyer's fire is meant to burn into your soul, not warm your heart. Proceed to read. WITH CAUTION.

Philly Great
As a Philly native I found Broad Street by Tom Dwyer an interesting story of crime, love, jazz and forbidden desire . It has a great story line with lot's of twist and turns. It takes you from the glaring lights of Atlantic City to the back street clubs of South Philly to the Main line Estates and Country Clubs. It is a story of the everyday lives of a Uncle and his nephew bound together by thier love of music and secrets of the past.

horseracing, thoroughbreds, and dreams..............
Fill the yearning you have for a new horse story. We've all worn our Margaret Henry's and Walter Farley's to a dog-eared, well loved, memorized place in our hearts and minds. DOLLARS IN THE STREETS adds new ideas, and fondly recounted hours of horsey dreams, and realities in a novel based on the life of an amazing young girl who came to a new country, alone, and with little to go on but her dreams, who made those dreams come true.

Beginning fifty something years ago, the author leads us through a straight from the horse eye view of the horse industry. From arriving at the stable at four AM, to the dark nights walking out a racehorse, long after the fans, and fanfare have died down, this is a great inside look at the care and love of horses from someone who experienced it daily for many decades.

A book filled with tears, laughter, miracles and satisfaction, this book, shows a young woman who gathers her dreams, stamina and like the horses we have loved "Phar lap, and Black Beauty" continues on through a life filled with ups and downs, wins and losses to fulfill her life.

Dollars from your dreams
A beautiful book for the race horse lover, and for young girls who need inspiration to make their dreams come true. After September 11, when so many woman are having to rebuild shattered lives, and so many young girls will be growing up with the terrible loss of parents to a horrifying situation, this book is a thoughtful way to show young girls you can make it. A girl who not only made it through a terrible war, but came to America alone, and not only made her own dreams come true, eventually made it possible for her whole family to come here and escape the poverty of a war torn country trying to recover from the ravages of that war. Laughs, and dreams, and miracles, and a toughness that gives us a clue that God, and our own endurability will get us through anything.

A WOMAN'S JOURNEY TO FULLFILL HER DREAMS-
This is a story of a truly incredible woman, who never gave up her dreams. It was very inspiring. A long journey encompassing many aspects of a multi-faceted life, and centered around the backside of the racetrack, where a woman is STILL not greeted with much more than distain from "the good old boys". This lady tells a story of being a pioneer in that field. It was truly inspirational. This book showed both the hardships and joys of living one's dreams to the fullest. I feel that there a lot more stories than the one in this book. I hope that the author will be enouraged to elaborate and write another more detailed book in the future. A very good first effort!

Simply Beautiful
Both Shange and Nelson are at their best in this beautifully illustrated walk through African American history. The illustrations are wonderful and the poetry is, in fact, poetry. Lovely.

IT'S HARD TO GET BETTER THAN THIS
What a beautiful book, both the very simple text (a poem that had
been previously published in an adult book) and the illustrations
which are quite possibly the best Nelson has done - which is saying
something because his work is always excellent.

Shange's world is not my world, but that little girl in the book
is right around the age of my granddaughter and the body language,
the look, the smile, the inquisitiveness, the daddy-love could be
my sweetie, and that is probably the most important reason why
I love this book.

Caldecott material--if not, Nelson will be robbed
This is one of the most beautifully illustrated picturebooks I've ever seen. Kadir Nelson is brilliant and supremely talented. It takes us into the narrator's home (the little girl on the cover) and gives us an intimate view of some of the most celebrated African-Americans in history. The text is scarce in a good way, and set off beautifully in boxes within the illustrations. Elegant and edifying.

A walk down memory lane!
What a thrill. Although Mel graduated from Lane ten yearsbefore me, I enjoyed his book immensely. Some of that thrill wasbecause I grew up six blocks west of where Mel did. He mentions manyfamiliar landmarks: Hamlin Park, swimming at the Belmont Rocks, local movie theaters, the Lindberg Beacon atop the Palmolive Building, Lincoln Park Zoo, the Lincoln-Belmont YMCA, and of course, Riverview Park and the roller rink. I, as he, used to listen to Randy Blake on WJJD, and rode the Green Hornet streetcars. Much of the book is dedicated to Lane Tech. I thought I was reading about myself, as Mel took me to Riesz's and McGovern's stores. As a "freshie" he learns as all of us did, about the sacred campus lawn, being subjected to a penny attack, how the room numbering can get you lost, and a trip to the discipline office. He uses terminology which was part of our experience at Lane such as: socials, course book, rovers, division rooms, and of course, the Myrtle and the Gold! Thanks, Mel! I recommend his book for all alumni who would like to take a walk down memory Lane (Tech).

"George Street, Our Street", A time machine!
"George Street, Our Street" is not a book, it's a time machine. It took me back through the 30's, 40's, and 50's. By page 39, along with sneaking peeks further on, I was traumatized. I couldn't talk around the lump in my throat ... I walked through old neighborhoods, I walked the halls of Lane, I went to the "Fog Bowl" football game at Soldier Field with Mt. Carmel. I froze, once again, watching Lane's football team beat Fenwick. I was back at the corner of Damen and Diversey selling newspapers again. What a trip! Quite a trip. I would urge all Laneites from all classes, past, present, and future to read this book. Those from the 40's and 50's will be instantly trans- ported back to those times. The alumni from the 30's and before will very much identify with it. All others who came after will have purchased a window to the past and will more fully understand: "Wherever you go, what ever you do, remember the honor of Lane". David V. Radcliffe, Lane Tech Class of January,1950

Warm, wonderful novel about a family's love and struggles.
Set in Chicago from the Depression-era to the early 50s, this emotion-laden book chronicles the maturing of a young boy and his brothers, all born in Texas and whisked to Chicago by their courageous mother to escape an abusive father. With remarkable attention to detail, it captures the intense, profound love this family shared, as well as the pain they endured living "on the wrong side of the tracks". It sends a strong reminder that the most important things in life do not have a price tag.

EMMERS' Review for THE HAUNTING
I first read this book when I was in the third grade and the way the authors described in detail the adventures of Jason (the main character in the book) in the creepy house that he had just moved into with his family nearly made me throw the book in the freezer out of fear. This is definitly a book that will keep the reader on the edge of their seat and their eyes on the page.

JOSHUA'S REWIEW
I think this book was one of the most mysterious books that I have ever read. It was about a boy who moved to a grand old house on cherry street. It was a great place to raise children. Even ones from the dead!

ONE OF THE BEST YOUNG ADULT THRILLERS OUT THERE!!!!
If your a teen who is sick of those stupid childish "scary" books, then this is the book for you!!! Nonstop horror from begining to end leaves you with a non stop thriller from begining to end!!! STRAIGHT FROM THE 14 YEAR OLDS POINT 'O' VIEW!!

Homicide Special : On the streets with the LAPD's Elite Detective Unit

The hard-boiled, tough-talking homicide detective is one of the classic archetypes in contemporary American entertainment. TV and movies have always been loaded with trench coat wearing cops drilling suspects and catching elusive clues that crack the case. And while there is no historical shortage of fictional gumshoes, writer Miles Corwin shows us that the lives of real detectives, while perhaps not as glamorous, are infinitely more interesting. Corwin was given extensive access to one of Los Angeles' top units and provides fascinating insight into methods of evidence gathering, interrogation, and other facets of detective work. Homicide Special pushes past the headlines to retrieve a depth of insight that reveals the complex nature of the crimes and the efforts to solve them. Real investigations aren't quite as easily solved as those on, say, CSI, and Corwin's analysis of various cases illuminates the fragility of good police work. At the same time, the actual details of a homicide case are considerably more grisly than anything on television and readers should be prepared for rather unpleasant imagery. Among the many cases spotlighted are the murders of the daughter of a Las Vegas mobster, a prostitute with ties to the Russian mafia, and Bonny Lee Bakley, allegedly killed by her husband, actor Robert Blake. Corwin makes good use of the access he was granted, fleshing out minute details that provide an intimate feeling to the locales, suspects, and witnesses visited by the detectives. The celebrity culture of the detectives' beat and the unique universe that is contemporary Southern California living provide an unusually eclectic perspective to the true crime genre, throwing the stories captivatingly off kilter. Meanwhile, Corwin's narrative toes the tough-guy crime writer line, calling to mind a contemporary version of Dragnet. But such trappings are mere accents to the ultimate success of Corwin's book: the ability to realistically demonstrate the challenges and triumphs of top detectives seeking both answers and justice. --John Moe

Read this book and you'll be inside the LAPD!!
Would you like to be a "fly on the wall" inside a homicide investigation?

This is an incredibly intriguing book that allows the reader to become familiar with all aspects of the LAPD Homicide Special division and the "ins and outs" of homicide investigation. It chronicles several real homicide investigations from start to finish, allowing the reader to identify with the investigators and the victims. (Some are even famous) The history of the LAPD, occasionally shady but never boring, is also narrated. Throughout the book the reader learns about everything from crime scene investigations to interrogation methods. This book is excellent. If you have even the slightest interest in police work, you really should read this book. It reads like fiction- detectives you root for, victims your heart bleeds for, and bad guys that get busted.

A real police procedural
Even if you aren't a fan of the police procedural novel, in which every detail of police work is explained, this true-life piece of reporting may prove engrossing because it reveals what really goes on in murder investigations. The author gets into what makes good detectives good and also what makes them different from one another. Although the members of the special homicide unit may dress pretty much alike on the job, they are widely divergent in their personal tastes and backgrounds. It's easy to consider the LA police force as an homogeneous group, but this book reminds us that no two people are alike. And it gives a good picture of the elements that make up a successful investigation.

exemplary journalism
Those interested in crime and punishment often have to settle for second-rate true crime books pasted together from newspaper articles. This book, by contrast, is a model of expert journalism and compelling writing. Mr. Corwin is an observer of great sensitivity and transports the reader to crime scenes, interview rooms and crime labs. Tough, authentic, absorbing.

Be a Street Magician!

Great reference for Wanna-be Street performers
This is a very informative book on the art of Street Magic, but I couldn't give it five stars. First of all the book was very redundant, alot of name-dropping, over and over again. Same facts on these performers told and retold. Also for you guys/gals out there looking for tricks to do. Don't bother there are no tricks in the book. This is more for the business side of things. And in that aspect it is a great book.

Finally, a magic book for professionals
Magic books are usually written by geniuses who can't put a good sentence together. They can deal a second with consummate ease, but don't take pity on their poor readers, who must slog through and read their words over and over again, trying to make sense of it all.

Groves is a former professional journalist and it shows. Also, he's a guy who's put in the work on the street, and that shows, too. Even the great Cellini didn't write a book like this, with chapters on how to attract a crowd, how to pitch for money, best venues around the world, and all the stuff that beginners and intermediates want to know.

I breezed through this book in three evenings, staying up later than I intended every night. He also mixes in anecdotes that enliven the how-to, talking about real street performers in real-life situations (using pseudonyms, unfortunately).

Oh, that Jamy Ian Swiss read as well as this, or any of the writers for Genii. Alas, they can't touch the hem of this guy's sought-after robe. Pity.

Stay off the Street? Not with this book...
I just finished reading David Groves tome on Street Magic. Not only is this a great book for anyone with a hankering to share their magical skills on the street; there is plenty of information for any street performer. Mr. Groves authored a quick read, but evidently well researched, and loaded with solid for a would-be street magician.

I've got quite a large library of magic books. I can say without a doubt this is the best written of the lot. You'll enjoy Mr. Grove's prose, wit, and wisdom, and learn about this topic -- inside and out! Magically, gpa

This was a great book.
I think that this book was a good introduction to children starting to read the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. It showed how he thought, and was a good children's book.

I love good books
I really love good books, especially mysteries. My favorite male characters are Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poiroit, Brother Cadfael, and, of course, Andrew Craigie/Tillet. Even an adult can read this book and enjoy it. I'd recommend it to anyone, since it's clean, well-written and interesting. Use the little gray-cells, read this book.

The Perfect Mystery!!!
I love this book! It's perfect for smart 10-11 yearolds-that's when I read it. It's a good beginner Sherlock Holmes, but not like a "My First Sherlock Holmes" book. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK! Andrew Craigie thinks somthing's up when he discovers that his gaurdian is kidnapped. Then someone attempts to kidnapp him! THe case then goes to the great Sherlock Holmes! Take my word for it, this is a great book.

Another Rumer Godden book worth tracking down
This book, along with The Greengage Summer, The River, and the Battle of the Villa Fiorita are four of her books that are the sort of book you will want to read over and over. Godden has a way of making children's voices be heard quite clearly, loudly, and a way of having their words resonate in your mind for a long long time. And they are honest words, from the heart. She is a British treasure that most Americans do not know about. i can't say enough about her books. for children age nine or ten and older and adults.

A mexican reads An Episode of Sparrows
I must confess that I have not read this novel. But as a librarian I just received a donation of books and among them I found the spanish translation of "An episode of sparrows". As I was cataloguing it I noticed at the last pages, with a clear handwriting the notes that I'll try to translate for you:

"I really enjoy this novel.
Unless I missed some details I think I could ubicate the plot of the novel in a humble neighborhood of England after Second World War.
The way the author shows all what a child can feel and think about adults is something I have to take in consideration on my work as a teacher and in my relationship with the kids around me.

Good feelings, being noble, honest and simple, and to show concern about the others, are in contrast with petulance, pride and not worryng for one's fellow man.
In the story there are some aspects that took my attention:

Sometimes those who offer help to people in disgrace dont do it because they are charitable, but as a way to be recognized at their own social and economic status. On the other side, those who leave their children on the hands of strangers dont have the right to do it, and I dont see them as humans.Even animals take care of their own cubs.

The novel left a deep mark in me."

This notes are dated September 2 1987. and signed "Prof. Luis Rogelio Gutierrez.

I will include An episode of sparrows in my next readings.

a work of art
"An Episode of Sparrows" captures, with the consummate artistry of Rumer Godden, a little sparrow-girl who nearly falls to the ground. Lovejoy's garden, in the shadow of a ruined church in postwar London, blossoms with such awful frailty that one holds one's breath with suspense. Vincent's West End-style restaurant, trapped in Catford Street, blossoms as well. thanks to Miss Olivia's at last fulfilled desire for "an ordinary little bit of life." Lyrical use of language, touches the heart, lifts the mind. A marvel of restraint and poetry.
