Wonderfully speculative!
I first read Baring-Gould's biography back in 1975, and it was my first REAL exposure to The Game -- the treatment of Sherlock Holmes as a living person and the art of speculating about The Master's life from the clues dropped by Watson in the original stories. I'm delighted that this book is still available.

Baring-Gould presents as good a chronology of the Doyle tales as anyone, and he "fills in the blanks" delightfully. (Imagine Holmes fighting a prehistoric bird in hand-to-talon combat on the deck of a freighter! It's true!!)

Baring-Gould obviously had a damn good time writing this extraordinary, and definitive, biography of Sherlock. And if you've already devoured the original 60 stories, dive into this book. Then set it alongside your copies of the Doyle books. It deserves a place there.

The real biography of the world greatest detective
Baring-Gould is the greatest chronicler of the Holmesian canon. His annotated version is a must for every enthusiast. Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street is the biography of the man, put together from the many stories. "It was the year in which Henry David Thoreau wrote Walden...."."Unaccountably, the Almanac fails to list perhaps the most memorable event of that same memorable year. It was the birth, in the early hours of the morning of Friday, January 6, of a third and last son to Siger and Violet Holmes, at the farmstead of Mycroft in the North Riding of Yorkshire, England, a district famous for its horse-breeding stables and its wind-swept--"wuthering" - heights." You will read about the birth of the man, his family, his brother, etc. You will enter with him into his friendship with Watson (also Watson's youth) and their adventures. Please bring this book back in print. It is a must.

A brilliant bit of Sherlockiana.
W.S. Baring-Gould's classic biography of Holmes is brilliant from start to finish. Arguably the greatest Sherlockian scholar ever, Baring-Gould assembles the details of Holmes's life from isolated references in the canonical stories and indulges himself in some inferential reasoning as to some of the missing information: he contends, for example, that a certain well-known U.S. consulting detective is actually the child of Holmes and Irene Adler. (Some of his speculations on other matters have been borne out by the discovery of a lost manuscript published by Nicholas Meyer under the title _The Seven Per Cent Solution_.)

Readers of this work will also want to find a copy of Baring-Gould's masterly _The Annotated Sherlock Holmes_ if possible. These kids writing Holmes pastiches today just don't know what the hell they're doing :-).

Loving Horses
I am 8 years old and I love Snow Baby because I love horses. I was disappointed that she was sold and that Blazing Star won all the time. But then I became happy when the little girl learned English and returned to Snow Baby with her daughter. I didn't understand a few of the words but I used my dictionary and figured out the meaning. I liked best the part where Snow Baby came back to the house with sleighbells around her neck. The illustrations were especially beautiful. Mrs. Street has written a wonderful book.

"Snow Baby" is a Keeper!
Absolutely loved the book and illustrations! Both of my children adored it and we are all looking forward to the next adventure and lesson with Snow Baby. This is a book parents and children can read over and over again without getting bored - We find something new in the writing or the paintings every time we read it! Looking forward to more great things from both Jane Street and Charlene Yandell.

Great Story with Lovely Pictures
What a wonderful story and the pictures are fabulous! My grandchildren just loved the book! Real talent here and we are eager for the next one from these two ladies. Keep up the good work.

My heart ached
I loved reading this book. It was difficult to lay it down. My heart aches for the mentally ill. I am a psych nurse--and I know the issues--court problems and goverment problems that each person with a mental illness faces--and this book brings it out prefectly. I would recommend anyone interested in mental health issues to read this book.

Excellent! A must read!
I just recently read this book and in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. It definitely gives you a different out look on our mental health care today and makes you think. I believe that our country has gone backwards in its care for the mentally ill. If your interested in mental health, mental illness, this is the book to read.

I am an old patient of Dr Seager
He is great...I was his patient for anxiety and panic attacks in Kaiser hospital a couple years back. He then moved back to LA...so I had to get another doctor. I wish he was around for more advice. He made things easy for me.

THE TABLES HAVE TURNED
This book can not just be read. It has to really be STUDIED!!! I will NEVER let my copy out of my sight!

THE TABLES HAVE TURNED
You know all these years I have fought against the death penalty, for political prisoners, learned the law in terms of habeas, wrtis, etc for those on appeal. I never sat down and took the time to learn nor fight this little money making ... scheme (traffic court/tickets) they have going on. Basically what I'm conveying is the first testimonial in reference to THE TABLES HAVE TURNED. Socrates said a man who thinks he know everything is the biggest fool (that was a paraphrase) and as much as I have independently studied law I always studied how if affect others or more to the point how and why it doesn't work. I never took the time to "turn the tables" myself for my own benefit.

I would like to reiterate that I think this book is very important and I sincerely hope that heads pick-up it up and the message grows like wild fire.

ONA MOVE! Keep giving this system hell!!!

THE TABLES HAVE TURNED
Characterized as a "self-help law education manual" to aid young people in preventing or surviving police encounters, kwami k. kwami's (a.k.a. The Chameleon) "THE TABLES HAVE TURNED: A Street Guide to Guerrilla Lawfare" takes the offensive against powerlessness resulting from individual ignorance of the law. kwami writes in the tradition of citizens like Huey P. Newton, convinced that "guerrilla" knowledge of legal codes, and using the law against itself, can prevent injustices against disenfranchised people. This manual is as much a polemic against the "public fool system" and the revenue-generating "fear of crime" industry as it is against police brutality. Avoiding convenient anti-brutality rhetoric, "THE TABLES HAVE TURNED" combines irreverence and humor with passionate arguments, practical information, and meticulous research. While occasionally dense or unwieldy, this book is still a walk in the park next to some of the law books through which kwami has sifted. He concludes that the best way to eradicate police brutality is to eliminate the need for cops and to begin policing ourselves and our own communities. Knowing the information in this manual is a first step toward this goal. A percentage of the profits from the book will be donated to the anti-police brutality National October 22nd Coalition.

Super
This is great book for exposing children to idioms. I first present some of the espressions to my students and have them try to explain them. Afterward, they have fun going back and finding the actual meaning. We usually do this around the time that we read Amelia Bedelia. The children illustrate an expression of their own choosing and the rest of us try to guess what the expression is. There are many extension activities to do along with this fun book. It is a great way to immerse chioldren inour language and get them excited about it. Lots of fun!

Wonderful reference book
This is a wonderful book for researching what idioms mean. It has delightful pictures and very clear explanations.
It would be very useful for children in third and fourth grade or for use with people learning English. Even though I have a master's degree and I am an avid reader, I found some idioms that I have never heard before. I am planning to give some copies to some third grade teachers that I know. Also, I bought a copy for my granddaughter.

One of the most engaging picture books received this season
There's A Frog In My Throat! is one of the most engaging picture books received this season: an illustrated survey of zany animal sayings, from lucky and odd ducks to one-liners about birds, bears, and more. Expressions are explained and the artwork is simply gorgeous in this visually packed picturebook.

Janet Maslin writes in the New York Times
This is a holiday gift to open more than once. Beautiful! Useful! Fuses text and illustrations in a way that enriches both!

Visually Stunning!
This book is an absolutely wonderful guide to lower Manhattan. It takes the reader into the exclusive, upper-echelons of Wall Street that few rarely glimpse. Giving a concise, yet very well written history of the architecture as well as the firms of Wall Street, this book is really a treat for everyone. I highly recommend it.

Great Combination Of Pictures And Insight!
This book is a pleasure to read and to keep around for others to enjoy. I keep it on my desk at work so that my visitors can enjoy the incredible photography. The book also gives a unique insight in to the history of the many firms on Wall Street and how consolidation has led to our current list of players. Many find it interesting to see how certain firms came to be what they are today.

One example of an interesting foreshadow is that the author has included a picture of the Banker's Trust building reflecting off of a Deutsche Bank conference room table. The two frims merged several years after the photo was taken.

Since buying this book I now enjoy walking around lower Manhattan. While before I was caught up in the rat race, I know see the beauty of the arcitecture and can better appreciate the history of Wall Street. This book is full of insightful anecdotes which lead to interesting stories for me to share.

This book is a must for anyone who works in the finacial world for its insight and to keep around for others to enjoy.

I was happily surprised when I saw one of the authors books on Nantucket while on vacation there. I bought the book and was again happily surprised at its combination of photography and narration. I would rate Nantucket Island five stars as well.

Street Conscious Rap
Published in Paperback by Black History Museum (28 September, 1999)

Street Conscious Rap documents hip hop history
Poet Ezra Pound once told literary critic Hugh Kenner that Kenner had an obligation to visit the great people of his time. In "Street Conscious Rap", H. Samy Alim takes this counsel to heart and hand, as he, with James G. Spady, records the words and ideas of hip-hop's innovators and creators. The resulting rarity--the makers of hip-hop speaking, without interpretation, of what they, themselves, think and do--is a resource for study and insight; a document with archival muscle; a testimony for all time.

Off tha hook book!
The interviews in this book are so detailed and in-depth that it made me think differently about some hip hop artists and hip hop as a whole. For instance, Method Man, Common, and Xzibit provide some real insight into the creative processes and abilities involved in hip hop. And Grandmaster Flash provides a first-hand historical account that makes you feel like you were there when hip hop was just getting started. All of the artists tell such amazing stories about their lives and experiences that we don't really read about anywhere else. The book also shows how important hip hop is culturally, historically, and socially -- and the impact it's had on the world. If you're serious about hip hop, this is the book you need to get. It's off tha hook, y'all!

Creative and Artistic Insight on America's Only True Culture
I have always believed that hip hop, is America's only TRUE culture. Originated in the U.S., and flourishing all over the globe, hip-hop has become a subject of great interest over the last decade. This book gives much insight as to the origins of hip-hop with interviews and ideas from legends like Grandmaster Flash, Doug E. Fresh and LL Cool J. At the other end of the spectrum, some of hip-hops newer and most intriguing artists are covered from Method Man to Busta Rhymes and even including some of the hottest local and underground rap groups to show the evolution of hip-hop in America. You will see that this virtual encyclopedia of hip-hop facts and philosophy doesn't miss a beat, as you find yourself continuosly nodding your head in awe of the detailed content as you turn each page. Anyone who has a thirst to learn more about the thoughts of their favorite rap artist, or to better understand the culture, philosophy and art of hip-hop, should purchase this book.

this is my favorite book. if anyone has similar taste to me then i highly recommend them to read it. i was getting so into reading it that i never wanted it to end. to last forever. so i tried to do so by reading a limit of pages each day. i live in NYC and by reading the book i had grown a stronger love for the city and thats another reason i loved the book. the down fall of the book? well, it was and made me sad. it was kinda a depressing book. you now. like a heart-acher.

it was indeed a pleasure to read and in the future, if you do read it, i hope you injoy.

thats my review! i hope i helped!

Recommended to students of Jewish history & women's studies.
Streets: Memoir Of The Lower East Side was written in 1922 and published for the first time in 1955. This remarkable memoir of a young Jewish girl's coming of age in the tenement slums of New York's Lower East Side is gritty, candid, vivid, engaging, sensitive, and streetsmart. Bella Spewack overcame obstacles of gender, background, and religious discriminations to succeed as a celebrated journalist, playwright, and screenwriter. Streets is highly recommended, articulate reading and will prove of special interest to students of American Jewish history, Women's Studies, and biographies reflecting the triumph of the human spirit over social and cultural barriers.

The early life of an unusual woman, with comedy and sadness
This is a coming of age story depicting the harrowing early life of an extraordinary talent. Told with an amazing eye for detail and a highly developed sense of humor, this is one of the most moving autobiographies I have read. Bella Spewack writes of her thirst for knowledge and determination. In later life Bella invented the Girl Scout cookie, became a noted journalist and wrote successful plays and movies. Streets tells of the difficult circumstances of her childhood.

The Superstock Investor: Profiting from Wall Street's Best Undervalued Companies

Highly Recommended!
At first glance, this book may look like just another tediously detailed behind-the-scenes guide to picking stocks. But the delightful surprise concocted by authors Charles M. LaLoggia and Cherrie Mahon is the book's page-turner narrative and laugh-out-loud wit, which they often use effectively to nail critical points. The authors focus on how to spot and invest in undervalued companies. We from getAbstract recommend this book to investment professionals (hey, the way things are going, a few fresh insights can't hurt) as well as to anyone, including Sunday speculators in need of a good laugh.

A Humorous Look at Spotting Takeovers and Special Situations
The Superstock Investor is the best resource I have seen for legal and ethical instruction on how to spot companies that will be taken over or whose stocks will soon soar due to temporary, special circumstances. These methods can help you make money in up and down markets, but they require a lot of learning and focus. Even if you don't plan to use these investment methods, you will learn a lot of how Wall Street works from this fine book.

A Superstock is a "stock that has the potential to rise significantly in price regardless of what the general stock market is doing." This will be due to a "specific potential event, or 'catalyst,' usually a takeover bid . . . ." These stocks are selling well below their on-going value as a business but no one cares because they are small and either cyclical or slow-growing.

The book is filled with actual stocks that the authors have picked and followed in their newsletter. The case histories go back over 25 years of special situations, including cumulative preferred stocks suddenly making their payments after having been in arears.

The basic method involves watching factors like takeover activity in an industry, the ownership of 5+ percent institutions through 13D filings with the SEC, insider buying and selling, company share repurchases, and technical trading patterns discerned from charts.

The opening section points out the weaknesses of how most people try to pick stocks. The examples are quite humorous, and will provide entertainment value even to people who do not buy and sell stocks.

The authors are also cautious about making claims. They are trying to give you an additional set of tools, rather than replacing whatever tools you use now. The examples of how to pay attention differently to financial news are very well done.

On the other hand, do be aware that few people are going to have the interest and discipline to learn to use this investing method.

After you finish profiting from this book, I suggest that you think about where else the consensus is usually wrong. What about forecasts of what will happen next politically? . . . with fashion? . . . with the economy? . . . with entertainment celebrities?

Learn to take the conventional wisdom as wishful thinking or the latest, best guess . . . rather than as fact!

The Superstock Investor
This book provides a unique insight into investing in the stock market. For most "get rich quick" investment books, only the author gets rich. This is not that kind of book. Mr. LaLoggia provides a wry and witty review of what's wrong with most investment "news" and "research" available to the public today. The book sets forth a proven system to search out and identify undervalued stocks that have been overlooked by Wall Street and the main-stream press. To Mr. LaLoggia's credit, he acknowledges that his approach is not easy and requires research and analysis by the investor. The fact that it is not easy and requires work may be the book's main virtue to the intelligent investor who realizes that there is no "get rich quick" formula.
