This 1992 Edgar Award winner for best fact crime is nothing short of a classic. David Simon, a police reporter for the Baltimore Sun, spent the year 1988 with three homicide squads, accompanying them through all the grim and grisly moments of their work--from first telephone call to final piece of paperwork. The picture that emerges through a masterful accumulation of details is that homicide detectives are a rare breed who seem to thrive on coffee, cigarettes, and persistence, through an endlessly exhausting parade of murder scenes. As the Washington Post writes, "We seem to have an insatiable appetite for police stories.... David Simon's entry is far and away the best, the most readable, the most reliable and relentless of them all.... An eye for the scenes of slaughter and pursuit and an ear for the cadences of cop talk, both business and banter, lend Simon's account the fascination that truth often has."

A year in the life of Baltimore's Homicide Squad
Reads like a novel! The basis for the television show "Homicide: Life on the Street", an excellent non-fiction book that reads like a novel. BALTIMORE SUN reporter David Simon rode with the Homicide cops for a year and profiled the gritty reality of solving murders in a major urban center. One of the best true crime books I've ever read!

A harrowing look at police life in the big city
This is an amazing book. Two people picked this out of my "To Read" list as their suggestion for what I should tackle next. Interestingly enough, I had already started it. I had heard about this book originally on a private list that I'm on, but never saw a copy at any bookstore that I went to. Then I heard that there was a TV show based on it, but I still couldn't find a copy anywhere. Just as I was about to give up, I passed through Powell's Books in Portland, and found a first edition hardcover for cheap--and it was worth three times that amount.

Simon spent an entire year observing a squad of Baltimore homicide detectives. The result is an incredible page-turner, filled with humor, pathos, stupidity, politics, brutality, and, through it all, death. This is not Hill Street Blues, and especially not Barney Miller. As realistic as Hill Street Blues tried to be, it really can't touch the mundane uniqueness--the singular exciting boredom--that is the job of homicide investigation.

To parody Dr. Seuss, "Ah, the things you'll see!" This is a travel book as much as any trip to a foreign land--an exploration into the world of police procedures and life. It's not a place many of us would choose to live in, much less visit. I much prefer to read about it.

Brilliant and readable
Here's a book that gets into the minds of homicide detectives like no other. The author is insightful and thorough, but his writing style is a celebration of brevity. Working within the law and sometimes around it or even in spite of it, the detectives are revealed as all-too-human but praiseworthy individuals. Read this with Randy Sutton's "True Blue : Police Stories by Those Who Have Lived Them" and you'll have the best writing on cops and crime available today.

The 30th anniversary edition of this classic memoir about growing up in Spanish Harlem includes an afterword reminding us that its streets are even meaner now, thanks to crack cocaine and the dismantling of government poverty programs. As a dark-skinned Puerto Rican, born in 1928, Piri Thomas faced with painful immediacy the absurd contradictions of America's racial attitudes (among people of all colors) in a time of wrenching social change. Three decades have not dimmed the luster of his jazzy prose, rich in Hispanic rhythms and beat-generation slang.

DOWN THESE MEAN STREETS
Me being a proud PuertoRican living in New York City, it's difficult living in the city with the everyday problems in the streets. This book relates to every Latino or African American growing up in the streets. The protagonist Piri is growing up in Spanish Harlem with his family. growing up in the His brother goes through everything with him. If you are ghetto streets of New York you know what is going on and what you've got to live with every day of your life. Piri Thomas lives his young life going through the mean streets of Spanish Harlem. He is a very creative character with knowledge about his streets and he makes positive decisions about the situations he runs into in his life.
This book is very good for anyone to read and realize their life is not to be taken granted, especially if you're growing up in the ghetto of America. I recommend this book for everyone who hasn't read it yet to experience life in the ghetto and walk through Piri's shoes. This book is good. It is one of the best I have ever read and I was hooked on it once I realized that I could relate to it. I was in the mind zone of Piri and it was like I was feeling the streets at the moment and Piri's pain and his way of living and surviving because I know it's not easy growing up in the ghetto. .

Puerto Rican experience life in the New York City
I think that this book should be required for all Puerto Rican people who live in New York. This book talks about what it was like to grow up in New York in the 1940s and 1950s. I think that this book does a good job explaining the experiences of a family. Also it talks about what Piri Thomas does and what kind of problems he is involved with, like drugs, in gangs, and that's very similar of what is going on now. I think people who don't want to be in a real trouble should read this book. I enjoyed the when Piri Thomas was sleeping out of his house because I imaging what can happen to me if I do the same things. This is the best book for anyone who is interested in learning about what is like for a Puerto Rican family to live in New York City.

THIS NEEDS TO ME MADE INTO A MOVIE - THE TIME IS NOW...
I first heard this man, Mr. Piri Thomas, speak in the spring of 1993 at Cal State University at Hayward. I was so moved (as a high school student) that I had our school (California High School) invite him to speak at our "Free Your Mind" day on June 4th, 1993. I loved his poetic 'realness' - and it was the first time I felt really empowered as a person of color living in a largely suburban environment.

His experience and insight was so raw and so 'real'. In this autobiography, Mr. Thomas addresses issues of racial identity (he was dark skinned, but his brother was lighter skinned/more white looking) and how racism affected him as a Puerto Recan. It describes him growing up in Spanish Harlem, NY, moving down the coast, meeting friends and some crazy situations. I remember him really hitting rock bottom, and then coming out in the end. I always looked forward to reading on.

I read somewhere that R&B singer Brian McKnight considers this his favorite book. That's when I knew I just wasn't being easily impressed. This is an excellent life story, well written, and a must read for anyone interested in the topic of racial identity. Yes, we are all individuals, but we should never deny our heritage...thank you Mr. Piri Thomas. I feel nothing but the deepest respect for you...thanks for your vision, insight and generosity.

P.S. If I could give more than five stars...I would

Telesales Tips From The Trenches: Secrets of a Street-Smart Salesman
Published in Paperback by Business by Phone (07 January, 2002)
Author: Joe Catal

Average review score:

Great for the one call close
The author makes no bones about it, this book is for people who can close over the phone on the initial call, or with a callback. This book isn't for someone setting appointments or going on outside appointments. The reviews are dead on. The book has hundreds of tips and strategies for cold calling businesses.
There's no stone left unturned. The authors goal is to get you a deal today! He has several voice mail messages to choose from. I've been using his "curious" voice mail with very good results.
Most books on phone sales is hype and theory, this books has techniques you can apply today. I think it's the best ever written on the 1-3 call short sales cycle. I agree with the rest of the readers, an excellent book.
I hope he does a seminar in my area, I'd like to attend.

Excellent Book, Excellent Seminar
Since the book came out, the author has updated his prospecting method. He now uses a 6 step process to prospect for maximum results. I was lucky too attend one of Catal's seminars in South Florida. I can honestly say, if you sell a product by phone business to business you can close in 1-3 calls, the seminar's a must. The book was great, but the seminar ties it all together. I literally consider the author to be the Guru of the 1-3 call close. No one even comes close. His system is light years above the rest. It's really a system by the people for the people. The author simpy uses the best techiques he's developed, or other peoples ideas. I suggest you hire this guy for your next company spokes person. When you're finished with his seminar, you'll have your own personal training manual. This guy's for real. A bit brutal, but honest and funny. If you're a franchise, I'd pay him 200K a year to go from office to office to train your people. Someone needs to get this guy off the street and working for their organization. A forutne 500 co. would make a killing off him. The author's a little secret gem that hasn't been discovered yet. Buy the book, it will be well worth it.

All gems... really great. Worth every penny
I've been doing a bunch of jobs, CSR, Techie,
Help Desk, LAN ADMIN, telcom sales, upselling for
existing customers, etc. And, as such, the more
I learn from books, the more I know how valuable
my own personal career experience is, and the more
I guess that there's a lot more to learn and master
in this craft than anyone can imagine.

Think about moving from a bicycle speed, to tractor
speed, to car speed, to high performance roadster,
to airplane, to rocket ... this is how a sales

star evolves ...all the while, staying within the
bounds of acceptable phone behavior in terms of
honesty, truthfulness, not deceiving, not lying
obviously, and generally, being nice on the phone.
The big difference, is SPH, and getting a lot more
done, in a small period of time.

In this regard, Joe Catal's book, SALES FROM THE
TRENCHES is really great.

I take it with me all the time to work. In the beginning,
I figured my collegues might take me as an amateur
for needing a book on my desk, while I work...after a while,
and meeting and exceeding all targets imposed on me, as a sales
rep, and mainly because I often have 2 jobs and work 13 hours
a day sometimes, and boredom, I take Joe's book with me to
work ...it really keeps me awake, amused, and I keep trying
out the rebutals, techniques that are new all the time.

Most of them work marvelleously...for example, "are you
prepared to DENY your family so-and-so priviledge ?" or
"I've been in the business for a while. When I'm told me
a customer like yourself, that you need to think about, it's
often because of the price. The price is too high, right ? How
much too high ? " etc. etc. etc.

All gems...

The other comments, about super-stars being a different breed
from other people punching in the clock and behaving like the
GRIM REAPER and often getting rewarded for being among the worst
possible employees in the company, bringing everyone down, even
the top performers, also rings true. I've been in the business,
sales, for under 3 years, and Joe Catal is on the money.

I think the GOOD MONEY is not in sales or telemarketing, but
higher in account management and project management, by the way.

Thanks Joe! Worth every penny !

dont forget how to swim, never know whats lurking behind you
I enjoyed reading the dead lifeguard. This is a very captivating book. It's alot like the normal horrors that you would see on television but it has a twist to it. I would recommed this book to people who like a good story of suspense and horror.
The Dead Lifeguard is about a group of strangers who spend the summer together lifeguarding at shady acres country club. One by one lifeguards disappear and no one can explain what's going on; but someone who knows is out to get revenge on the lifeguards... read the the book and find out what happens.

lifegaurds
this is one of the most suspenceful books I have ever read. I read the book all at once! this book is about lifegaurds who do work at a so called "haunted resort". one by one the lifgaurds start to die horrible deaths. one of the lifgaurs wants revenge on all the rest.the main character in this book is probably lindsay everthimg happens to her. there is also mouse he is the killer. mouse is the nickname of the killer lifgaurd.

Greatest R.L. Stine book ever.
The lifeguards at North Beach Country Club know they're lucky. While other kids are flipping burgers, they're sunning themselves by day and partying by night. So what if some people say the place is cursed, haunted. This is the life! And then, one by one, the lifeguards start to die horrible deaths. Someone-or something-evil is stalking them. They all know how to save other people's lives...but who will save theirs? Original

Good story, could have been a great book with better writing
I found this to be an interesting story and a pretty good book. I thought the descriptions of the coaches' recruiting antics were very enlightening and well written. Being able to use some of the real names, particularly very well known ones such as Stephon Marbury and Jim Boeheim, added a lot to the credibility of the book.

Where I found this work to be lacking was in the descriptive writing. Really good writers construct word pictures that are vivid and allow the reader to better experience the story being told. I didn't find the writing quality in this book that would have made me rate it a 5 star effort. This author's style seemed to me to be more like a newspaper reporter's - limited to a fixed amount of space and more focused on the basics than the aesthetics. Outstanding books also need to deliver the aesthetics in the form of well painted word pictures. I wish this book had been stronger in that area.

Great Book, very interesting read!
This book, depicting the lives of four aspiring young basketball players, is both intersting and educational. If you are an all star, or don't play basketball at all, you'll really like this book. This book is so incredible because, although it describes basketball playing thoroughly, it also describes a city life few people know of. Darcey pulls you into an interesting ride as Tchaka goes through the college recruiting process, Russell struggles with his SATS and jump shot (off the dribble), Corey aimlessly wastes his obvious intelligence, natural basketball skill and talent in rapping, and as Stephon wows everyone with his superiour skill in basketball. Where Tchaka is serious about basketball, Russell is serious about college and education, Corey is hardly serious about anything and Stephon is still finding out what he's serious about. Tchaka has charm, he's tall, thin, plays power forward, and does well enough on his SATS to get into college. Russell is dedicated, he studies nightly, practices daily, and even shoots from a lawn chair in the local park. Corey is without purpose, he's an awesome basketball player, he could easily get good grades, should he apply himself, and he rights poetry fantasticly. Stephon has an attitude, he's seen his talented brothers not go to college, and waste their talent, so he practices and studies, but he knows he's great. This is a fantastic book, and an educational read on many levels.

A sobering and maddening look at college sports
This book made me mad! Not at Darcy Frey, who writes a great book, but at the combined effects of wretched public schools, which pass along students able neither to read, write nor do sums; and at the NCAA's patronizing and exploitative treatment of "student" atheletes. "Last Shot" tells of four star black basketball players on the Lincoln High School (Coney Island) team. Despite horrible poverty, housing projects overrun by drugs and violence, ans a school system which cannot keep them safe (let alone educate), these young men are good kids. They are kept alive, and their hopes fed, by a combination of (1) amazing basketball skills; (2) a coach and mentors who believe in them; and (3) the dream of a NCAA Division I scholarship leading into the big time. Unfortunately, only one makes it, and he just barely. The other three cannot meet the Proposition 48 requirement of 700 SAT scores (even though their high school grades are good), and lose their shot at a Division I scholarship.

Juxtaposed against these hopeful young men, who do everything that is asked of them but are finally betrayed by abysmal schooling, are the Division I recruiters, many of them well-known coaches. They give new meaning to the word "smarmy." They are corrupted by the system. Darcy's title "Last Shot" has a (quite intentional) double meaning. He refers first to the excitement of a well-played game, when victor and vanquished hang in the balance. More troubling, he acknowledges that, for each of these boys, the chance to escape the ghetto through a basketball scholarship has become his "last shot" at a successful (or safe) life. To mix metaphors, what angers me about the situation Frey describes -- in fact makes me so mad I will have trouble watching the NCAA Tournament this year -- is that these young men have received a raw deal. It's not right!

This book flamed my interest and kept it till the last page!
I read this book ages ago and since then have read a thousand more but this book sticks out in my memory. The Fear Street Saga is imo the best of R.L. Stine. There's constant action and terrifying dark magic and a killer curse to keep one glued to the pages. I also highly suggest Christopher Pike as well, like R.L. Stine he does not talk to the reader like a person talks to a two year old but as intelligent readers of whatever age (myself being 20).

HORRIFYING AND DISTURBING...AND THIS IS JUST THE BIGINNING
This is the book where R.L. Stine finally reveals why Fear Street is so haunting and terrifying. THE BETRAYAL starts out in the 1900s in Shadyside, Massachusetts. Nora Goode is a young girl who just lost her lover, Daniel Fear, in a terrible house fire that fire fighters couldn't even put out. Nora knows the terrible secrets of Fear Street and must let everybody know before it's too late.

She's the narrator, and she starts writing a book about the street. Her story starts out during the 1600s in Wickham, Massachusetts - a time when witchcraft is a very dangerous gift to posess. Anyways, a young pretty girl named Susannah Goode lives with her family in the village and soon becomes attracted to Edward Fier the son of Wickham's "governer", Benjamin Fier. When Benjamin learns that Edward wants to marry Susannah because they are in love, Benjamin falsely accuses Susannah and her mother of practicing witchcraft because he believes Susannah is "not a perfect match" for Edward. So he ends up burning Susannah and her mother at stake. Furious, Susannah's father - who really does practice witchcraft - puts an evil spell on the Fier family that they will all die and pay for stealing his innocent family away from him.

The first part in this saga ends when Edward finds out the truth about Susannah - it's several years later and Edward has been married to another woman - and her mother.

THE BETRAYAL is a really great book and a must read for all FEAR STREET fans. It's so good you can't put it down 'til you've finished. I really recommend it, and I also recommend the other two parts in this saga: THE SECRET and THE BURNING. Awesome, fun books to read for a relaxing evening!

its like real life
to tell the truth at times i didn't like those happy endings stories because the way my life was going this year. And when one of my online friends reccomend that I try reading the Fear street books , i checked out two and read them. (they aren't Fear street sagas) before I knew it, later in the year i checked out the story and read it in one day! I guess its because like real life is the reason i like it. Not everything has a happy ending. I reccomend this book to anyone who likes Fear street and to anyone that doesn't have a happy life. This book starts in WIckham Massachusetts, where Susannah and Edward are in love. When Benjamin, Edward's father learns that Edward wants to marry a poor girl, he falsely accuses Susannah and her mother and burns them at the stake. Then Nora Goode picks up the story later in 18 years later where WIlliam found the Fier family. I don't I'll reveal anymore secrets

MY review of The New Years Party
I thought that this book was very suspenceful. The characters were very easy to relate to, however the plot wasn't. I have never been in a situation near death so it was very shocking to see everything that was happening. This story was fun to read because it had parallel plotting. There were two different stories that led up to one suprising conclusion! The book is scary, but kind of like a mystery because you have to recognize who the characters are and what they play in the murders that occured. Overall, I think it was a very good book and I enjoyed reading it.

Spine Tingling
The New Year's Party was a five-star,two thumbs up, all around awesome book. This book was really good and it had a shocker ending. I was horrified. The New Year's party is definitly for anyone who likes to be held in suspence. No one can ever guess the ending. I couldn't put the book down. It was a real pageturner. It is one of R.L. Stine's best Super Chiller books. It was great when,in 1965,two teenagers die,but they don't know it, and when they come back for revenge it leads to murder. You have to read the beginning thoroughly because when you reach the end of the book, the conclusion will make no sense at all, unless you understand the beginning. The New Year's Party was so scary, yet so fun to read. It was spine tingling. I recommend that you go out and buy the New Year's Party by:R.L. Stine.

The New Fear's Party...
One thing you should do before reading The New Year's Party: buy it. I highly recommend everyone buy this book before casting your eyes on the first page because as soon as you've finished reading it for the first time you'll want to read it again and again to go over the story once more and to just pick up on those things you sorta missed the first time. Okay, enough buying recommendations, what about the book? Well, I loved it. I thought it was extremely clever and really entertaining to read, and it stands as one of R.L. Stine's finest achievements to date. That man writes much better when he knows he's writing for teens and not children. At the start I didn't really care about the characters in The New Year's Party, but when the horror really starts to roll around, you start to wonder if this mysterious killer is going to get Reenie and her friends or not and you really start to care about them. The mystery is really, well, mysterious. I kind of guessed the plot twist before the end came but that wasn't a problem because I still enjoyed reading the final few chapters. The book really builds on its suspense and is a total page-turner. I read this book in two days. Maybe that's a record for me and how fast I read chapter books. This fabulous mystery will probably be the most enjoyed by young adults and teenagers, but I recommend everyone have a good, scary time reading it!

She was drop-dead beautiful...
There are five prom queen candidates for the Shadyside High senior prom. One of them gets kidnapped and then another one gets murdered. Lizzy McVay, one of the prom queen candidates, realizes someone wants all the prom queens dead. Now she must find the murderer before she's next to die.

All I can say is "wow." What a great book! There are so many suspects in this book that it's almost impossible to guess who it is. I could've sworn it was that guy but it was actually someone else. Trust me, you'll never be able to guess the murderer.

If you read this book, expect the murderer to be who you least suspect.

This was my first, and favorite Fear Street Book!!
The Prom Queen really scared me. For a while I was afraid to walk into a room that the light was not already on in, at night. Since then I have read many more and me and all of my friends still agree that The Prom Queen is the BEST! One clue if you're a beginner with Fear Street, (in your mind) never trust anyone, even the main character. This book is R.L. Stine's best yet! It has many twists and turns to throw you off the trail of the true killer. You'll never guess who it is. Another clue (no one is dead until the end). Well I've filled up the page with stuff about my favorite book!

Really good
I know i always put 5 stars on every fear street but thats because all these books are 5 star good. Im not afraid of the supernatural, but i am afraid of real human killers, i stayed up for 45 minutes after i got in bed afraid someone was gonna stab me to death, and i had only read 2 chapters. BUY IT! you will love it!

One Evil Summer Review By Soccerchick101
In the book one evil summer Amanda Conklin's mom is looking for a mother's helper. She sends out an ad in the Seahaven Daily. Amanda can't help her mom because she is failing algebra and has to go to summer school. A girl named Chrissy answers the ad. As soon as she walks through the door, Amanda's cat, Mr. Jinx, starts to hiss at Chrissy. Also Salt and Pepper, her birds, stop singing and they usually sing. Little do the Conklins know that Chrissy is perfect, perfectly evil!! This book is perfect reading for anyone 10 and older. R.L. Stine has many climaxes and rising actions throughout the story. I highly recommend this book.

I LOVED this book and you will too!!!
One Evil Summer is one of my favorite Fear Street book series let me tell you a little bit about it

Summer at the beach and Amanda Conklin's stuck in summer school. Well, at least she doesent have to take care of her little brother and sister. Thats Chrissy's job.

Chrissy seems like the perfect babysitter- so kind and trushworthy. But Amanda soon discovers Chrissy's terrible secret. Babysitting is Chrissy's job but killing is what she does best!

I gave this book 5 stars and i hope u will too!!
