Winning Strategies- a Winner
I wish I had purchased this book instead of some others on mushing I already had. If you are a beginning musher, you will still probably need something like Miki and Julie Collins "Dog Driver", but if you are at all interested in distance mushing (for racing, work, or pleasure), this is a must read. There are some glaring typos and grammatical errors through the text, but I forgive these in favor of the superior content. Also, be prepared for some hyper-competitive threads. Joe didn't get to the top of the sport by waiting for the right opportunity to come by, but rather made his own opportunities and suggests the reader do also. Interspersed with the practical considerations of distance mushing are some anecdotes that Joe uses well to illustrate his points. These are not only entertaining, but enlightening. As far as practical training, feeding, and management advice for distance mushing, this one is hard to beat.

full of dog care facts with humor and common scence , great
THIS WINNING IDITAROD CHAMPION has wriiten an excellent overall care book for the working dog. The title does not clue the reader into the entertaining stories that are contained between the cover. I was particularly impressed with the author's great sense of humor and his story-building abilities. Even more impressive is the fact that Runyan's book is Joe's creation and no professional co-authors who might have diluted the real character of the author. It's rather amazing to find a real Will Roger's amoung the ranks of writting mushers. His honest assessment of the sled dog racing scene--how it was and how it has developed into what it is today, can be appreciated by anyone. The "politically correct bug" never bit Joe and for that this reader is grateful. Joe's willingness to call a spade a spade is evident throughout the book. The book is largely on the authors experiences as a dog breeder, trainer, and racer, but a good portion is devoted to his observations as a commentator on the iditarod trail and can be used for any working dogs life. It makes for easy reading as Joe provides valuable information in a very entertaining form.

Fantastic details on Provincial Sports Lottery betting!
The Winning Strategy is a book that is long over due! I love to play the Provincial Sports Lottery, but it is hard to win without inside knowledge. Al J's Sports REALLY tells you everything that you need to know about PSL betting in this book. By far, it is the best $20 that I ever spent! The only thing is, it is so detailed that you really need to read it twice. It's worth your effort!

Great book
I don't have much to add to the other review. I will say that I occasionally stop playing 1. e4 all together, because I don't want to face the Sicilian. But this is silly. Why play chess at all if I am scared of certain lines? After all, it's only a game. My point is that when I come back to 1. e4 and try to decide what to play against the Sicilian, I always end up turning to this book by Lane (that is, after I try and drop the Smith-Morra [too gimmicky], the Alapin [too passive], the Grand Prix [too aggressive], and the Closed [too Closed!]. The Bc4 scheme makes a lot of sense, and is consonant with chess principles and chess history (Fischer used it, and he is the closest thing to what Morphy may have been like in the modern era). Excellent book with a good index in the back and nicely produced by Batsford.

One of the most aggressive lines against the sicilian
I think that this book is highly reccomended to all players who don't like to simply win a chess game! The lines are analized with clearness taking advantage of what grandmaster practice has done with them. Lane chooses beautiful and instructive games for each line and he gives the strategic plans that are behind any possible continuations (all the notes are strictly connected to this feature). This is very important because this variation doesn't admit any misjudgments and so the moves must be carefully calculated, this is why it's most wiseable to me that you can understand the way you make that move instead of learning the move from a book. This book allows you to enter the secrets of the Fischer-Sozin without putting in your memory a lot of move orders without explanation. The only reason I didn't give 10 rating is that I wanted to see much more games than the 48 analized inside... But I can assure you this number is anyway worth of it!

At Last!
I first saw a collection of these justifiably famous plates - alas, only in black and white - over 30 years ago and was at once struck by the great dramatic style, artistry and accuracy of the subjects portrayed. Anyone who has travelled in Russia will at once recognize the style of the wooden houses which can still be found there today. The author has captured the scale, drama and pathos of this historic campaign in a singularly effective and immediate manner, almost with the character of a modern war correspondent`s camera. The text sets the locations for all the pictures and is an invaluable adjunct to them. This book is a show-stopper. Greenhill are to be congratulated for publishing this work and making such rare witnesses to history available to a wide public. Jonathan North is also to be congratulated for his efforts in his handling of the translation of the text. It was worth waiting all this time to have the chance to acquire such an important historical document. Well done again! Digby Smith.

'Never Despair While Brave Men Remain With the Colors'
This book has only one word fit to describe it: Magnificent!
It is the best book on the Napoleonic period to come out since Napoleonic Uniforms, Volumes III and IV, by Col John Elting was published in May of 2000, and it clearly defines Greenhill as the premier publisher of Napoleonic literature today.

Edited and translated by the stalwart Jonathan North, who gave us In the Legions of Napoleon (translator) and The Napoleon Options (editor and contributing author), it is one of the best memoirs of the Napoleonic period. Jonathan North's discerning eye has once again enabled all of us to see inside the Napoloenic period in general, and the Grande Armee in particular, through the eyes of those who marched, sweated and fought in its ranks. The combination of a reliable, detailed memoir and the author's eyewitness sketches and paintings is vivid, compelling, and, at times, incredible.

With Napoleon in Russia is the memoir, both in writing and sketches and color plates, of a Wurttemberg artillery officer, Major Christian Wilhelm von Faber du Faur, who was assigned to and fought with Marshal Michel Ney's III Corps in Russia. Serving from the crossing of the Nieman in June 1812 with the invasion, through the grueling march to and retreat from Moscow, seeing combat at Smolensk, Borodino (the Moskva), and the epic crossing of the Berezina in November, Faber du Faur endured the entire gamut of this most cruel of campaigns.

The narrative is crisp, informative, blunt and to the point, describing the Russian countryside, its people, and the army with which he served gallantly, the Wurttemberg horse artillery being given the singular compliment by Ney that it was as good as or better than its French counterpart, long acknowledged as Europe's best.

The narrative neatly compliments the 93 full color paintings by Faber du Faur, most of them cleverly accompanied by the eyewitness sketches from which the paintings were developed. From the crossing of the Nieman, to the dreary, horrifying march in the cold, snow, and frozen hell of the retreat, Faber du Faur describes all that was the Russian campaign. The Grande Armee of 1812 was the largest European force ever assembled up to that time and included Germans from the states of the Confederation of the Rhine, Poles, Spanish, Portuguese, Austrians, Prussians and Italians, by 'fear or favor' all allied with the French under the 'Emperor of Battles' to fight the eastern nemisis in the 'Second Polish War.' Faber du Faur chronicles the achievements and endurance of all of these troops and their commanders, the paintings making the Grande Armee come alive as no other graphic memoir has before or since.

Marches, bivouacs, battles, more marches, the burning of both Smolensk and Moscow (the last deliberately set by its half-mad Russian mayor), frozen retreats, running fights, and more battles to the climactic fight at the river Berezina are brought to life, along with an interesting picture of Russian cities and villages, as well as both Russian peasants and nobles. There are also snapshots of troops in action, on the march, as well as three interesting portraits from life of the Emperor himself.

Some of the interesting points brought out in the paintings and narrative are that the French infantry were still wearing the pre-1812 infantry uniform in Russia, a Wurttemberg gun crew is shown in action, the accompanying text describing the terror of ricochet fire by the Russian artillery, Faber du Faur's own artillery unit in march column, a Wurttemberg burial detail, interesting interaction between the troops and the Russian peasants, troops in bivouac and on the march, with incredible uniform details, as well as how their horses were cared for during halts, how close artillery was actually used in action by the Grande Armee, and use of light infantry both in open order and in line of battle.

A detailed, interesting overview of the campaign is given by Jonathan North which sets the tone for the book, and the 1831 Preface by Faber du Faur is also included. Additionally, the order of battle of Ney's III Corps for 25 June 1812 is given as well as a detailed bibliography of eyewitness accounst of the campaign, both from the viewpoint of the Grande Armee and the Russians. All of these elements combine into a work of scholarship, realism, and what it was to soldier in the ranks of the Grande Armee.

Taken altogether, this book is an immense achievement and a welcome, reliable addition to Napoleonic literature. This book belongs on the bookshelf of every historian, wargamer, military modeller, or anyone interested in the period. The sketches and paintings are done with artistic talent, as well as being a memoir on their own, and contain a wealth of detail, information, sweep, and color. If you don't add this book to your collection, you are missing out on both a verbal and visual treat, as well as one of the most reliable memoirs of the period. It is a bargain at twice the price. This volume is enthusiastically recommended.

Woodcock-Johnson 3: Reports Recommendations and Strategies
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (April, 2004)
Author: Nancy Mather
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations, & Strategies
Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations, and Strategies (Nancy Mather & Lynne Jaffe, New York: Wiley, 2002) is an essential resource, not only for evaluators who use the Woodcock-Johnson III and teachers who use the results of Woodcock-Johnson III (WJ III) assessments, but also for anyone involved in educational evaluation or planning individual educational programs.
The first section of the book begins with a collection of extremely well-designed forms, worksheets, and tables that make it much easier to organize and report WJ III evaluation findings so the findings will be understandable and helpful to teachers and parents. It continues with the clearest explanations I have seen of scores and levels of interpretation, including "sample statements for reports scores and score discrepancies." The section ends with valuable information on interpretation of comparisons between tests and patterns of errors, including a tremendously helpful, three-page table of "task analysis and comparison of selected tests."
The 31 sample reports (27 for children of ages 4 through 17 and 4 for adults) in the second section provide a variety of instructive models, including the use of 41 other tests to supplement the WJ III. Many different report formats are offered with a mixture of disabilities (including none).
The 158 pages of specific, practical, clearly explained recommendations, organized by categories, are a treasure chest for any evaluator or teacher. They include suggestions for further evaluation, accommodations and modifications, and teaching methods. This section could stand alone as a special education textbook. Including appropriate recommendations from this section will tremendously enhance the value of an evaluation report.
Finally, there are 85 pages of specific instructional strategies, some self-contained with needed materials printed in the book and others clear summaries with references to published materials. This clear, detailed presentation will provide even the most experienced evaluator or teacher with valuable, new information and will allow the evaluator to show teachers precisely how to carry out recommended instructional strategies with which the teachers may not be familiar.
The myriad resources in Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations, and Strategies achieve the seemingly contradictory goals of making it easier to write evaluation reports and making the reports much more useful to parents, teachers, and administrators.
The breadth, depth, clarity, and overwhelming utility of Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations, and Strategies make it an essential resource for even the most experienced evaluator or special education teacher as well as an ideal textbook for assessment courses. I enthusiastically recommend it.

Amazing book
Run to buy this book if you do psychoeducational testing. Not only does it explain the Woodcock-Johsnon III in detail, it also gives a plethora of wonderful recommendations that you can use in your reports. In addition, it actually contains about 20 or more actual reports. You can't lose!

Great ideas for real parents with real kids.
As a freelance web designer and the single mother of five I have my office in my home so I can be there for the kids but instead found a greater distance.

Working Parents, Happy Kids was full of great ideas on keeping connected with the kids; helping them understand why I was working and helping me see what I was working for.

This book has more than theory... it has practical tips and easy to implement ideas.

from angst to bonding with this book
I love my kids so much...but i had spent so much time building my naturopathic medical practice that i nearly lost touch with them. Fortunately i slowed down enough to spot Working Parents at an airport bookstore as I was rushing through on the way to another seminar. It's a book i've alreadly actually prescribed several times. a comfort to other busy parents who are crazy about their kids and don't want to lose them. solutions just pop out of this thing. Funny thing is these ladies are local! Travel the world and the answers are in your own backyard.

Great book for K-12 Writing strategies across disciplines
I used this book to develop writing assignments for students in Math, English, and Social Studies. Students seem to learn content better when they write about a topic instead of just taking scantron tests.

A great handbook for high school teachers.
Teachers will find many aspects of this book useful in the classroom, especially teachers of Native Americans, students from depressed areas and low-income. The book delivers varied classroom activities and chronicals methods and strategies that are effective in the classroom in one of the most critical areas of all teaching--writing.

Writing Strategies by Laurel Richardson is Must Reading
For students struggling to understand what it means to do qualitative research, Laurel Richardson's book on Writing Strategies is an excellent resource. The book is very helpful in differentiating conventional forms of scientific writing from the more interpretive forms of writing that are typical of qualitative research. The book is very readable. Richardson makes complex ideas accessible.

Excellent, reflective, engaging, transformative.
Richardson's book initiated deep and reflective dialogue on the nature of qualitative writing, particularly from the voices of scientist, researcher, feminist, and representative of the academic world to the general public.

Her work is strongly recommended as required reading for every graduate student engaged in qualitative work, as well as experienced researchers and those entrenched within quantitative methodology.

Your College Experience: Strategies for Success 4th ed
Your College Experience: Strategies for Success 4th ed by John N. Gardner and A. Jerome Jewler.
This book is excellent for a first semester college introduction to academic life. It deals with the issues students need to address for academic success such as critical thinking, time management, active learning, learning styles, reading, writing, listening and speaking, test taking, library use, computer use, academic resources, advisors, relationships, diversity, stress management, finances, alcohol, drugs, and sex. The book has six parts: 1. Strategies for success, 2. Plan ahead, 3. Take charge of learning, 4. Hone your skills, 5. Get connected, and 6. Know yourself. There are one to four chapters in each part totaling fourteen chapters, about one per week for a semester. There are exercises and guiding questions for a personal journal at the end of each chapter. A highlight is the interactivity provided by the CD-ROM packaged with each textbook. Each chapter has a self-assessment, has exercises from the book formatted to use on the computer and refers to textbook pages, has additional exercises not in the textbook, quizzes, crossword puzzles, and journal assignments that can be done on the computer. The CD-ROM links to many Internet sites for additional information and self-assessments. The book comes with a free four month subscription to InfoTrac, an online library. This book is good for the visual learner, the CD-ROM is particularly good for the kinesthetic learner, and the discussion exercises are good for the auditory learner. There are also supportive materials for faculty who adopt the book, and the CD-ROM is available on Blackboard and WebCT as online course management tools.

A Great Book
