Winning Quickly
The first time I saw this book was when my coach used it to show me some exciting games. I borrowed it and enjoyed playing through the games so much that I tried to avoid returning it. The solution was to buy my own copy. Mr Lane gives comments to lots of interesting games all of which finish within 25 moves. I have learned new attacking ideas while having the pleasure of slowly going over the master games. A fun book.

Play to Win
I have a limited time to study chess but with the help of this book I have recently won several games against higher rated players. The secret is that Gary Lane manages to give opening tips on positions that are likely to be met by the average player. If you are looking for an improvement in the main line Sicilian on move 22 then this is not for you. The vast majority will like the suggestions in openings such as the Nimzo-Indian, Dutch Defence and even the Elephant Gambit! There are plenty of tricks and traps to catch out lots of opponents.

Vocabulary Strategies Every Teacher Needs to Know

Authors: Danny Brassell and James Flood
Amazon base price: $23.00

One of the more useful teacher guides
I was assigned to read this book for an elementary reading course, and I was impressed by how reader-friendly this guide was. Every strategy includes a step-by-step procedure, along with lists of print and e-resources. One of my first graders' favorite methods that is discussed in this book are the word plays and word riddles, as these strategies feel more like games. I heard Dr. Brassell speak at the California Reading Association convention in San Diego, and he is right: for every task there is to be done, there is a game. He called this the "Mary Poppins approach" to teaching, and this book serves as a reflection of that philosophy. I would encourage any K-6 teacher to use this book with their students.

Valuable Asset for Beginning Teachers
Not that I enjoy textbooks, but I cannot help but compliment the authors on this practical guide to vocabulary instruction. It is very teacher-friendly (thank you, Dr. Brassel and Flood, for making the book spiral-bound) and includes an array of strategies that I have managed to use with quite a bit of success with my 4th graders. My only criticism is that I wish there were more strategies included, as I have seen more mentioned in other texts I have read for my credentialing courses.

Must Read , This fate of wardogs should never happen again.
The above review is only wrong in the war mentioned. It was the Vietnam War that the War Dogs were so terribly misshandled by the USA. and so few returned. The WWII War Dogs were mostly retiurned to their owners as they were owned and donated for service by civilians. . The Vietnam Dogs were owned by the U.S. Govn't .and treated as surplus commodities . Lemish has written a fine historic book and the American people ought read it. The war dog handling after the Vietnam War by our military/govern't is a disgrace to our so called civililized society The men of wars haven't faired much better which says much about the decisions of Senate, Congress and Supreme Court on the issues of value of life. Life gets a very low rating I pray this country will some day elect representatives of the people who respect and uphold the ideals on which this country was founded. The porspects for the future of dog and man as it is now, is not good. Just read this book. .

a must read: great treatment of a much overlooked subject
An excellant treatment of a much overlooked topic.

The role that war dogs played in WWII for example was huge. Yet, only 200 dogs were returned after the war. They were killed rather than quarantined for a short while and monitered for disease and then returned.

This mistreatment constitutes yet another way in which dog and man suffered similar hardhips in the war. Just as the sacrifice of the soldiers of WWII have been often overlooked, so too has the role of man's best friend.

The injustice (of the k9 murders) breaks my heart. However, it is important to honor and remember the role that these glorious dogs played.

This book does exactly that, excellant work Mr. Lemmish.

War in the Shadows : The Guerrilla in History

War In The Shadows: Fascinating!
A must for any Military and History buff. This book has bought me endless hours of reading enjoyment. As a Latino, of most interest to me were the chapters on the Mexican revolution, Spanish-American war and Che Guevara. Asprey writes in great detail and in chronological order, he also provides the reader with the political and social climate of the time and events that lead to any engagements against opposing forces. Keeping any opinions to himself, he just gives the fact as if we all are spectators viewing a movie. Asprey describes the guerrilla units, their political indoctrination, strength and weakness and field attire and equipment. The maps help illustrated the subject area and regions, any troop movements and battles fought that help paint the complete picture. He presents any leading figure with importance and when able too delves into their personal histories and background. I'd fancied myself a authority on History and warfare till I read Asprey "War In The Shadows" and found out just how much I wasn't aware of. So put this on your list of reading materials and tell your friends.

The Shadows Wars: Why Americans Can't Learn from the Past
When War in the Shadows (WITS) was first published in 1975, it infuriated members of the US military. Asprey's denunciation of high-ranking officers' conduct of the war in Vietnam came under intense criticism. Asprey claimed the US military lost that war due to its total ignorance of unconventional guerrilla warfare. Though blackballed by military scholars for almost a decade, he refused to retract his accusations. Instead, he continued to cite 2000 years of guerrilla/terrorist warfare tactics, operations, and strategy as proof the US military violated most, if not all, principles of unconventional warfare. Nineteen years later, he revised WITS, and along with that revision came a newfound respect for his insights. WITS is still the most definitive study of guerrilla/terrorist warfare available and it continues to remind the military of the requirement to fully understand this type of warfare's capabilities and limitations.
Overall, Asprey's work is very edifying. His 30 year research effort brillantly imparts lessons needed today. His reminders to the military about going off to an unconventional theater of war "half-cocked" contain some of the most valuable military thinking of our time. WITS is more than a historical appraisal. It is a usable text of events that, while historically embedded, continue to speak to the contemporary experience of unconventional warfare.

Wouldn't Be Able To Do It W/Out It
Wario World is a great new platform game from GameCube, I have played the game throughly, and without this colorful strategy guide, I don't think there would be a chance in the world that I wouldn't be able to get through this game. Though, it's fairly simply this guide gives you helpful tips that you may not even now about. This is a must for all GameCube fans if you are having trouble finding those hard to find treasures and or just having no luck whatsoever trying to get past through the trapdoor stages to get to the crystals an order to defeat the bosses at the end of the stages. Don't bother looking up the internet for codes, cheats or whatnot, look no further: Wario World: Prima's Official Strategy Guide is here to save the day! It also gives you an outline of Wario's Worlds that you must have to go through. Getting toward the end of the game, you are beat. And thanks, Wario World: Prima's Official Strategy Guide, I made it through. And beat that Evil Black Jewel, which was fairly easy if you knew the strategy to beat 'em. It also includes the trial version of the Game Boy Advance game: Wario Ware, Inc.: Mega Microgames. It gives you tips on how to defeat the mini games from the GBA game. Wario World is a fun game, and can't wait for the sequal.

What Would You Do If-- : A Simple Strategy for Preparing Kids to Think and Act Responsibly

AuthorZone.Com Book Review
The Review
Section one The Early Years presents five chapters Out of Sight But Not Out of Mind, School Daze, Emergency Exits, Let's Go Fly a Kite, Out and About, and Final Thoughts. Section two The Later Years is eight chapters Friendly Reminders, Study Strategies, The 9 1 1 , Let's Party!, The Dating Game, Getting Connected?, Working Hard or Hardly Working?, Baby Baby! And in the end.

The writers present an eye opening statement in their introduction: 'As parents we make assumptions as to what we have taught our children and what we think they know.' What Would We Do If is a direct by product of the writers' learning the truth of that statement.

Each chapter is presented as a help for parents to use when talking with their own children about what to do in specific situations. What to do when situations are encountered at a friend's house, at school, or emergency setting are all geared on what to say to the small child who may not yet understand what to do. Emergency situation especially need to be well thought out by parents prior to their trying to teach children what to do when the smoke alarm goes off, or a tornado is nearly upon you.

As kids mature talking time between parent and child needs to continue, however the specifics may change. The writers stress that Parents must have well developed understandings for how they themselves will face situations prior to trying to talk to their pre teen or teens.

Writers Bunker and Osborne are parents who have put into practice the methods they advocate in What Would We Do If. I especially enjoyed the little tidbits added as the writers told how specific situations played out for them regarding the suggestions offered.

What Would We Do If is a short little book filled to the brim with useful, helpful hints developed by two women who have an easy writing, easy reading style.

The book should prove helpful to parents of newborns and older kids alike. The book is easily read, filled with good useful suggestions and will enhance the home library of those who endeavor to broaden their understanding of kids and how to guide them to successful adulthood.

Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.

Great, practical way to talk to kids!
This book is so easy to use and it works! I thought that I had prepared my kids but I found out that I was wrong. This is such a simple way to have a conversation WITH my kids. We have been able to talk about things I had never thought of before. I highly recommend it!

What's the Best Move? Chess Quiz.

THE classic openings work
No, it is not an opening treatise; but What's the Best Move just might teach you more about openings than any other general openings work in the whole literature of chess. I found this book in my favorite used/overstock store, misplaced in the sports section instead of in the chess section. Several times I looked through it, and foolishly put it aside because it only dealt with 1. e4 openings, and most of these were things like the Ponziani, the Kings's Gambit, the Two Knights, etc. I figured that if I wasn't playing these openings, I wouldn't get anything out of this book. Finally, however, upon seeing the good review here and seeing favorable mentions elsewhere, I took a chance on this book, and going through it has been an eye-popping experience. Evans brings you through several moves of an opening, giving you choices of three moves to pick at various spots. In the back are detailed explanations of why certain moves were wrong, and of which one was right. The explanations are incredible. They are lucid, poingnant, and highly instructive. The next diagram will show the same opening a little further on, and ask you to pick a move. White or black may not have played the right continuation up to that point, and you know this from reading the answers to the previous quiz. Thus, you start to recognize the appropriate setup in these various openings. What is even better is that the answers ulitmately have little do with the opening in question; that is, the thinking process you go through is applicable to any opening at all, and this book changes the way you look at openings. Plus, the positions selected will inevitably occur frequently in your games. It is ultimately the unique and effective instruction technique that Evans uses here that makes the book so wonderful. I thought I was reasonably proficient at openings until I went through this book. I since have realized that I frequently chose the second or third best move. Evans has opened my eyes and re-dedicated me to the opening. I consider this book absolutely essential to the intermediate player who really wishes to improve not only his openings, but his analytical abilities. Finally, the book is incredibly enjoyable to go through. Working through it I got the same feeling I had going through The Amateur's Mind by Silman; that is, that the instructor was right there with me giving me personal lessons. You will be very grateful that you bought this book.

A classic
This book is a wonderful collection of problems taken from early stages of chess games (they are grouped by the openings in which they arise). You try to pick which of three options is the best move under the circumstances. Unlike most problem books, this one tests and teaches not just tactics but strategic/positional considerations. Evans's explanations and analyses of the right and wrong moves are superb. It's ridiculous that the book is out of print, but at this writing Chess Digest apparently still has a few copies in stock.

The Perils and Opportunities of Post-Entrepreneurialism
Rosabeth Moss Kanter is among the most thoughtful and articulate of commentators on contemporary business. Having recently re-read this book, I was not surprised that it remains at least as relevant as it was when first published in 1990. Her fondness for metaphors is evident in this brief excerpt in which she suggests correlations between Lewis Carroll's Wonderland and the global marketplace which Kanter surveyed more than a decade ago. "The mallet Alice uses is a flamingo, which tends to lift its head and face another direction just as Alice tries to hit the ball. The ball, in turn, is a hedgehog, another creature with a mind of its own. The wickets are card soldiers, ordered around by the Queen of Hearts, who changes the structure of the game seemingly at whim by barking out an order to the wickets to reposition themselves around the court.... Substitute technology for the flamingo, employees or customers for the hedgehog and everyone from the government regulators to corporate raiders for the Queen of Hearts and the analogy fits the experience of a growing number of companies."

The "giants" which Kanter examines in this book include Kodak, IBM, AT&T and CBS. I find it interesting that Louis Gerstner chose for the title of his recently published memoirs Who Says That Elephants Can't Dance? As he explains, IBM's culture rather than its strategy proved to be his greatest challenge when struggling to save that once great company. This is precisely what Kanter has in mind when suggesting that "Whereas bureaucratic management is inherently preservation-seeking, entrepreneurial management is inherently opportunity-seeking." She goes on to explain that "The major concern of bureaucracy is to administer a known routine uniformly, guided by past experiences, whereas the major concern of an entrepreneurial organization is to exploit opportunity wherever it occurs and however it can be done, regardless of what the organization has done in the past. The post-entrepreneurial organization brings entrepreneurial principles to the established corporation."

Kanter explains how even the largest of corporate "giants" can use the "The 4 Fs" (i.e. being focused, fast, friendly, and flexible) to "dance": replacing their bureaucratic culture with a post-entrepreneurial organization. As is also true of every book she wrote before and has written since this one, this volume offers that rare combination of eloquence, practicality, passion, and most important of all, compelling and enduring relevance. Obviously it will be of great value to decision makers throughout larger organizations but I also highly recommend it to owners/CEOs of smaller companies as well as to those who have recently embarked on a business career and are in need of guidance as they develop their leadership and management skills.

Those organizations (regardless of size or nature) which reject or ignore "The 4 Fs" seem certain to encounter a fifth: Failure.

Great Business Ideas
Even thought this book was originally written in 1989, it has great ideas that can be utilitized today.

Here is an excerpt from the book:

Today's corporate balancing act requires a different style from, a style better suited to playing in the corporate Olympics. Our new heroic model should be the athlete who can manage the amazing feat of doing more with less, who can juggle the need to both conserve resources and pursue growth opportunities. They need to be Focused, Fast, Friendly and Flexible.

A lot of great ideas that can be utilitized today.

Very highly recommended reading for beginning teachers
In Winning Strategies For Classroom Management, Carol Cummings offers thoughtful, practical advice on physically arranging the classroom, diagnosing student behavior, and responding to students' emotional needs. Her practical examples show how effective classroom management results in motivated students exhibiting self-discipline, perseverance, and who take responsibility for their learning. Cummings' approach to classroom management proactively addresses discipline and behavior problems. Winning Strategies For Classroom Management is very highly recommended reading for beginning teachers and has much of value to offer even the seasoned classroom instructor addressing the needs of a diverse school population.

The most practical book for teaching classroom management
I used this as a text for my "Managing Classroom Behavior" course which I taught at the University of St. Thomas and the students were thrilled when they picked up the assigned texts and came back and said, "After four years of theory, I finally have a practical book that I can use in the classroom." This book is based on theory and applied practical and real ways to manage children and instruction on how to teach to be a proactive manager. As a teacher, it was great to have a tool that I could use for instruction and direction in the classroom. The students were also impressed that it was the lowest priced book they have purchased throughout their four years at the University. One student took her books to Kinkos to have it spiral bound because she said she knows she will use it throughout her teaching career. It's a winner!
